- My mom and I dayhiked McKittrick Canyon trail from the contact station to the Grotto area. It was a 7 mile round trip over mostly level terrain. We did get to see some late season fall colors. It was past peak fall foliage change as the colors started changing early this year. We did this hike in early November 2020.
In this video we check out the trail, the trees, Pratt Cabin and surrounding area, the Grotto, and the Hunter Line Shack.
Pretty awesome your mom doing this hike and the Peak hike.
Yeah, we were fortunate to get to do this trip together.
Great colors. Have done the Peak hike (Top of Texas!) but haven't done the canyon. May have to some day; those colors are stunning. I know how fresh the air is there too, so I imagine the smells were good too.
Yep. Pratt had an awesome homestead. Great way to spend the day.
Definitely beautiful! Definitely Texas! 👍
that stone house sure is neat and great leaf colors all around it too. that cave/ grotto is fantastic, nice it has a picnic area. Always good to hike with mom, glad you could do that, and without too much corwds/ great video thanks for taking us along.
Thanks for watching. That whole Canyon is amazing. Love how it changes as you hike in.
It's awesome that you got to hike with your mom and having what looks like perfect weather. You're making good memories.
Yeah we had a good time out there. It was a little too windy most of the time we were there but thats just the way it goes out in those mountains.
Great video, Thanks for making this.
Magnificent. This is not just the most beautiful place in Texas; it may be one of the most beautiful places anywhere.
Thats true. Especially the view into South Mckittrick.the fall colors were really cool. Wish we had been able to be there 1 week prior.
Great Name. Gotta Love it !!!
I love watching videos made by traveling folk to my stomping grounds on this planet.
I hope you were able to experience the full range of colors the canyon produces. Mckitrick and Sitting Bull Falls are my favorite hiking trail, and wilderness experiences in the whole South East Corner. I would say The Carlsbad Caverns, but being a Carlsbad NM lifelong resident and the caverns are played out. But for any one else I need to express the overwhelming visual satisfying sites within The Carlsbad Caverns, truly one of North America's greatest places to experience.
I love it up there. Can't wait to go again. Beautiful fall colors.
The fall colors were great. Even if they did say its a slightly down year.
Fall time backpacking might be my favorite season. Those colors were really popping!!
Thanks for watching Jason. Colors would have been better the week prior. But thats about as good as it gets here in Texas.
Really enjoy your videos and I'm glad that you and your mom enjoyed the day hike and fall colors that are still showing. Thanks again and stay safe ... 👍😉
I'm glad we made it out there before the wind blew off all the leaves. Thanks for watching.
Haha nice! Good seeing you too Cameron.
Great video - really nice colours 🙂
Colors would have been better the week prior but we still got to see some pretty awesome fall foliage. Thanks a lot for watching.
Hello Cameron. Thank you for the great video. I have been watching your videos for a few months now. We do love to hike and your videos give us great places to add to the list. In a previous video I thought you mentioned you live near Granbury. We might be neighbors. We live between Whiskey Flats and Cresson. Good luck and please keep sharing you great videos.
Hey John, I actually live in Cleburne. But still pretty close. I appreciate you watching. I'll have a few more Guadalupe Mountains videos coming out over the next couple weeks.
Still some gorgeous colors
Yeah for sure. We were a little past peak but there was still plenty good to see.
From what i understand that these mountains have mountain lion!
Yeah there are definitely Mountain lions. Though, I've never seen any at the park.
Good memories being made in the most beautiful spot in Texas. The colors last fall were incredible and didn't look to shabby this year. Wish I could send you some pics. I'm glad Mckittrick Canyon trail is accessible to almost everyone to enjoy. Have you ever noticed the Rainbow Trout in Mckittrick creek?
I havent personally seen the fish. I knew they were there but I'm not sure exactly which part of the creek. I thought the colors were still pretty good on this trip but I would have loved to been there a week earlier. I would have especially loved to have been there last year. The pictures I saw online were almost unbelievable.
Thanks for sharing! By chance do you remember how early the fall foliage changed during that year? I'm hoping for even a tease of fall colors when I visit mid October.
I've been in October several times. There will usually be some color change in the higher elevations or maybe Dog Canyon. Early November is probably best. I can't remember exactly when this was but we were later in November.
I was surprised to see water in that creek...do you ever carry a filter out here?
Very cool hiking w your mom and stunning colors. I'm headed back out there in a few days. I really hope to see some fall colors!
There is always water in parts of the creek. I dont carry a filter in the national park just because some rangers say you can't use the water. While I think officially the park just discourages it. But the only water sources are within a mile or two of the trailheads. So I'm fine carrying water an extra couple miles.
Hope there is still some good leaf color out there when you get there. Hopefully the winds don't blow them all away before then.
Is this the shortest hike you've done on your channel? Lol. Nice fall colors.
Just wait until one of my next videos ... 3/4 of a mile long!
When our the fall colors usually at their peak? I know Lost Maples State Natural Area is usually at its peak the second week of November.
It definitely varies. But I'd say right around the first of November. I have been in late September before and saw the first of color change. And I have been in mid October and saw no color change. First week or two of November, generally should be Peak. But you might also get good color change toward the end of October. Different areas of the park are at different elevations and leaves tend to change at slightly different times.
@@CameronHall88 thank you
So where did you set a base camp for all these day hikes? I have a friend that wants to go but he doesn’t wanna backpack and camp so if I could set up a base camp somewhere he’s in!
We just stayed at Pine Springs. While its convenient for access to dayhikes, I much prefer to stay at Dog Canyon.
