Luton 1 QPR 2 reaction: Do Luton have a punch-drunk problem?

  • What a disappointing evening that turned into!
A night which offered so much turned into huge downer for Luton Town on Friday as they were the victims of a smash-and-grab by QPR in a 2-1 defeat.
Kev is joined by The Lutonian journalist James Cunliffe to reflect on a match which saw the Town do so many good things but come undone due to two horrendous mistakes at the wrong time.
The boys pick out the real positives of the first hour of the match before touching on the moments which transformed victory into defeat and then offer their takes on the various post-match reactions.
The best bits of the Rob Edwards post-match press conference is also included in the podcast which finished with a shortened deep dive rather than a full one which is usually the case in an international break.
All this and a whole lot more on the longest running Luton Town podcast!

The Luton Town Supporters' Trust was created, and initially named Trust in Luton, in 2003 to help force out unpopular former owner John Gurney.
Current club chief executive Gary Sweet was part of the group that effectively forced the club into administration and out of Mr Gurney's control, for a new consortium to take over, headed up by Bill Tomlins.
Another change of ownership again brought problems and administration followed again in 2007, until the club was eventually bought out by the fan-led 2020 consortium, headed up by Sweet, which has now helped steer the history-making Hatters from the non-league to the Premier League.
The Supporters' Trust is a democratic, non-profit organisation run by fans for fans. The purpose of a Trust is to help fans to join together and strengthen their influence over the way Luton Town Football Club is run, and to improve the links between their club and the community it serves.
In a way, we’re like a union, believing that many voices are stronger than one and that the best way to influence the club is to represent many fans, not just ourselves.

I agree. I'm not all doom and gloom about it. But I just sense something is not quite right. I hope two weeks off and a bit of soul searching will get things moving. I agree entirely with James that if we allow the bond between players and fans to unravel then it's a long road to get that back.

Thank you for such a refreshing video. I have been accused for being a happy clapper I tell you now I am a happy clapper. I come from a rugby background and clapping your team off after a match no matter the score was normal and proper. The team are desperate to win and I think this team will do well but to assert that Rob should go is delusional. 3 seasons ago we were struggling to stay in the Champ. People have such short memories. So many go on about 1 win in 24. They forget the losses were mostly by one goal in the prem. We were so close but some fans forget what happened in Feb. This is the first window that Rob can address the squad 5 games is nothing in the champ. look where 2 wins take you now.
We are playing well just not clicking with the strikers which happens with every team. has to be 4 at the back. we got promoted to the prem with 4 at the back. It works . I really think we need a left sided player to challenge Doughty as he has no one trying for his position. Taylor is no replacement for Chong. Should of kept Chong on for 90 mins some said he was blowing I did not see that.
Taylor is not a good at the press. for the 15 mins he was on he should of bust a gut on the press even Eli was pressing better than him and he already played 75 mins. Like Woodrow and Brown for their work effort

Speaking of Bournemouth, remember last season when Iraola first took over and was trying to change their system? First 10 games they were pants, looked like they would be in the relegation fight, but then they suddenly clicked and went on that crazy run of form. Rob deliberately delayed changing things up too much last season due to being in the prem, now this season we're going through that transition. Hopefully it'll take less than 10 games for it to click with our players!

This conversation offers such a refreshing viewpoint in comparison to others i have listened to, thank you. 4 games isn’t enough for anyone to judge yet. We’re playing good football, creating chances - we’re in a transition from a long ball team to a possession based team, it’s going to take time. If things haven’t improved after 10 games or so there’s a problem, but right now try and see the positives Luton fans, it’s a long season.

So, are you also saying he didn't do a job but more because he didn't have many minutes? I think that would've been a valid discussion for us to have had, if he didn't have that one big chance. But, his job is to score, primarily, and he missed a golden chance, hence on this occasion he didn't do the job he was sent on to do.

but was he better than Chong? No he offers nothing that side. Its not his fault, he should be in the middle up top. He needs to press better too in my opinion. @@lutontownsupporterstrust Then all the strikers didnt do a job, especially those on for 90mins. Taylor isnt a saviour but judging him like this is not consistent with how others are being judged. You must be seething about the 'golden' chances Carlton and Eiljah are missing each match? I'd get off the lads back, hes young, been left in limbo knowing Rob wanted him out and is put on too late to really get going.

I'm so pleased that the transfer window has closed. Clearly those parasite agents sniffing around has had an impact on the team spirit. However, we didn't create an actual shot on goal until the 16th minute. Yes, we might have the ball but we do nothing with it. Our final third is shocking and has been shocking for a very long time but for some bizarre reason, Edwards continues to do the same thing over and over - some 23 games later without a win.
However, shellshocked as Edwards may have been, making no changes for 13 minutes is laughable, then giving Taylor - who needs game time, around 15 minutes to work some magic but oddly, Edwards puts Eli out wide and the town huffed and puffed to another defeat. Our tactics are wrong, other teams know how to unpick us and that needs to change.
The middle of the park goes AWOL, which brings our opponents straight onto our back line. We miss the holding midfielder like Sambi who cleared up behind Barkley who went forward. We aren't doing that.
McGuiness made a mistake for the first goal - it happens but their second goal we had too many ball watchers. But how you judge a performance depends on your metric. If you are happy with possession football that leads to nothing - fine, and that's where we are at. The frustration from Luton fans is that after 23 games without a win, Rob continues to play the same way and he needs to change things up, especially in our final third.
I am happy with the 3 new signings and even though he made a mistake, I actually love McGuiness - a proper strong defender, being a real threat at corners and set pieces, both Walsh and Baptise have the ability to make those killer passes, but between Chong, Eli and Morris, their footballing brain are 3 steps behind.
As for the snake returning - if he slithered back, I would have to avoid listening to pre/post match interviews again as I personally can't stand him. He is not the answer and may I point fans to the fact when Snake slithered off for the first time how big Mick saw Luton promoted because the coaching staff were the ones actually running the show - not NJ. His name should even be on the lips of fans.
Either way, Rob needs to come back from the international break with something new to offer in attack. A new shape, or tactics but I do worry that he will just stick to the status quo that hasn't worked for 23 games now, which is probably why fans are so annoyed right now. COYH!!!

@welcome2mytruth well put, doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different outcome is madness. He needs to be more ruthless and drop favourites and make tough decisions. Far too sentimental for my liking. I'm probably one of the few fans that thinks Kaminski is partially the reason we dropped so many points. His contributions were blown out of proportion by the fans and manager because we were in the PL he's doing the same in the Championship and will be exposed come end of season. Too late for some of us fans that can see he is a huge problem for us. No brain when it comes to possession based football. The amount of times we just turn over possession is crazy. How he's managed to walk straight back into the team is just as crazy. Shea has done nothing wrong whereas Kaminski makes a vital mistake every game. As a GK myself I'm fed up of travelling 200 miles to watch someone who is so average. Great GK oh please, he was the worst in the PL behind Fodderingham who was just as bad. Please for the love of the Club can someone recommend the recruitment team a GK by the name of Stefan Tarnavanu. Up and coming Romanian star, he's a 6ft 6 unit that's a commanding GK. Until we don't get a great GK we'll continue to struggle. If u want to be a regular fixture in the PL then get the GK we deserve.

Bang on guys. It seems a lot of those with strong opinions have an amazing lack of logical thought. It's lazy thinking to assume that a player not playing like Joe is better than someone on the pitch. Same with NJ being better. Short memories too!
I've been banging on about a back 4 since last November. Mainly because we need 3 in the middle both in and out of possession. I only mention it because on twitter, so many of those with other podcasts or who write regularly on Luton and have disagreed with me from last year up to the last couple of weeks re a back 4, are now banging that drum. I'm not saying it's definitely the answer but those jumping on the bandwagon late, are again showing they assume the grass is always greener.
Keep up the good work. You're the best Luton pod by a mile.

  • @pashico7082

Tactically, I'm fine with a back three as long as it's out of possession. In possession, I expect two of the three to stay back and one to push up and support the attack, so it resembles the central defense of a back 4 in possession. I feel like Rob made that tactical change to a certain degree compared to the back three against Burnley when we kept getting shredded in transition. Unfortunately, not tactical, but personal mistakes cost us dearly this time. In the second goal, the left defender should've stayed on the left side. A "back four" doesn't change anything if the defender(s) on the left don't stay in position, so I have to somewhat disagree there.
The midfield looks good. Overall, we control the ball well. The central or defensive midfielders look good, the wingbacks carry and cross the ball well, the attacking midfielders also generally do well in buildup although Morris's first touch looks bad at the moment. Hopefully they can carry on performing well until our finishing finally works out.
As for why we lost in an attacking sense, or keep losing, I think it's mostly down to morale. Losing is a habit, and it has negatively affected our players. Carlton, the poor skipper, cannot only focus on his own performances because he has team responsibilities, with a team that is struggling. The new signings aren't so mentally affected by our form from the Prem through relegation. But players like Elijah seemed really down, with little enthusiasm and self-esteem. He should've scored an easy goal, but he just looked really unsure of himself and was indecisive. I think we should try to re-instill a sense of "I have to prove myself". Carlton last season was on the bench for a while before he became a first team regular again with great performances. Maybe do the same with Elijah, and others who might seem too down? I dunno, but I hope we can somehow encourage our players. And on the booing point, it's also counterproductive.
COYH, let's show Millwall our strengths!

Every club goes on the occasional run of bad form, this is ours. Rob, the players, the fans have all tasted the Prem and got drunk on it. Hangovers take a while to get over and for Luton, who haven’t got drunk since the 80’s are going to suffer more. Won’t be long and we will be back on form and scoring freely.

No, we're comparing some people's clamour to see him as some sort of saviour that will come in a cure our goalscoring problems only to miss a golden chance from a few yards out. But we have also discussed extensively in previous podcasts Taylor's talents and how that may or may not fit into Town's team.

  • @SoulfulHatter
    @SoulfulHatter 13 дней назад

Unfortunately, Clark’s ‘good work’ was made irrelevant because of his final ball. As they ‘were reeling for ages’ after those two early second half goals, the Plan B at a minimum is to bring on substitutes soon and change the narrative…not persevere with a format that clearly wasn’t working. Who knows what may have been achieved if Taylor had 30 not 15 minutes. Mebbe nowt but give him a reasonable chance; nothing to lose at that point. In reality QPR were worth a third goal; they were comfortable on the ball for the remainder of the match. When players make mistakes…that’s exactly when you do need a decent coach to sort it. And there’s lots for Edwards to work on - hopefully this two weeks will act as a mini-preseason. Agree 100% about booing. Talking about expectations, Edwards raised them with his early comments.

I agree entirely we have a technically better squad to the team that won promotion 2 years ago. But....Over the past ten years we have often not been the best squad of players, but we had better team spirit, a never say die attitude, fantastic workrate, game management and aggression. What remains to be seen is if this group have seen some of these qualities eroded or worse still disappear.
Could be a premier league hangover, players having their heads turned by possible moves, taking time for a new methodology to be adapted to. But either way right now I'd take the squad and mentality of two years ago over this one. But I appreciate it's four games in and if we can marry everything up we should be a top six challenger.
I still maintain our biggest lost since Jan is Tom Lockyer missing from the pitch. We simply haven't replaced his leadership, organisation, sheer will to win, and game management. We lack leadership on the pitch. I hope McGuinness turns out to fill that void. I remain to be convinced as to our credentials this season. Plus there is the inevitable pressure from the stands, which will become completely toxic if we lose the next couple of games.

I haven't seen anyone trying to defend Friday's performance. We all know it was poor defending that let us down. Yes, our form has been terrible for months, but many of those games were against stronger competition in the Premier League. We need a reset now that we are back in the Championship. I still have faith that we will turn this around. I've been watching this club for over 50 years. A club of our size with limited resources are having the best years of our lives. We don't panic just because a few results go against us. I wager that by the end of October we will be in the top six.

QPR are one of the poorer teams in this league, Middlesbrough, Leeds and Sunderland will do a Burnley on us. Not getting the basics right, look at the space QPR had on the left hand side; Madsen had acres of room to run and be in position for the 1-1.
Stats don't lie, 20+ games with only 2 wins. Hashioka, Krauß and Brown are our only real injury concerns, an ex-premier squad with new signings at Edward's disposal & we still look lost. I hope after the International break, we can find our form for Edward's sake.
