Luton v Derby preview: This year, to SAVE US from TEARS, just give us a FESTIVE FORTRESS
The Town play their final match before Christmas when they play host to Derby County in a massive game for the Hatters on Friday night.
Kev is joined by The Lutonian journalist James Cunliffe to look ahead to a game where three points are badly needed for the Town.
The chaps begin by reflecting on two men who will be returning with the two visitors who have played a huge part in the recent history of the club before the attention turns to the current players on show for the Town.
The lads point out their fantasy Luton XI for the game and discuss the sort of areas which could enhance the chance of a Town win. The podcast ends as ever with the score predictions.

I think the players just saved Robs job! Same formation, not working. Credit to the players for finding a way in the end. Papers over the cracks for a while longer. Hows the Garry Sweet stadium coming slong? At least I predicted 2-1!!
Luton 2 Derby 1
The pressure on a home win is mounting with each poor away result… backing the boys to get this over the time. Just. 2-1 to the Town. I’ll admit that I’m concerned that the stubbornness and defensive vulnerability away from home may creep into the home form if there’s not a rethink in Jan.
Luton 3 Derby 1
Please stop rewriting history - Clark was shit for the first 14-16 games and cost us loads of goals (And games) because he cant defend but yet got to play every game irrespective of how many mistakes he made. His last few games have been significantly better from an attacking viewpoint but his defensive output has still been relatively poor. He wasn't a scapegoat, well only for his manager - who thinks hes good enough to control the midfield in a 2 man setup - hes not, never has been and never will be.He fits on the wing of a 4 or as the playmaker in a 3
Luton town 2 derby county 0
Luton 2 Derby 1
Score prediction I'm sure we'll gift them a goal at some point so I'm going 1-1 again
Hashi is now injured so I guess a back 4 is well and truly off the table, as who do we have available for a RB? Trying to predict who gets picked in a 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 is making me depressed so I'm not gonna do it 😜
2 - 0 is my usual BUT I'm actually opting for for a 3 - 1 tomorrow. I'll be there to witness it too. 🥃⚽🥃
Kev i would go full strength on this one and make sure of the win and three points so i would play Krouse and Addy and get two up then bring them off,This one ends 2-0 Luton COYH ⚽️
2-0 win 🧡
2-0 Luton
3-2 for Luton. We need Marv back in the starting line up. We are missing Amari, not been the same since injury. We are missing Burke and we are missing Alfie…all key players. Play people in their right positions. Less negativity needed all round. We outperformed to get to the Prem, we outperformed in the Prem. The Championship is tough, always has been. All I want for Xmas is 3 points, not manager change chaos. Is Fanne the new messiah…or Christ or have they all been very naughty boys?
3-2 to us - a right old ding-dong of a match too ! COYH's
Hashi out so getting peiters in must mean he is sticking with back 3 ooor he could surprise us get a under 21 play rb peiters play left back ( not sure why he don't use jj) 6 defenders out AGAIN like last Feb. I think we need a total reset at the back. But having wingback does make it tough on those players. Lots of heavy running and sharp turning. Makes fatigue injuries more often. God, this could be it for Rob....very weak side defensively. We must really go for it. Or we get turned over and Rob gets sacked Sad
I wouldn't be so sure. Big Mick was just interviewed for BBC sport about player recruitment and said that the board and club are fully behind him - direct quote - "There are a lot of reasons for our disappointing away form, the mentality going away from home but Rob Edwards has his finger on it," Harford added. "He's done a tremendous job at the club, along with his coaching staff. I can't see why he won't be here for a long time." I was furious when snake returned to the club but once I found out that decision came from Mick himself, I became more at peace with it, as he is a man I trust 100% to have what's best for the club at the centre of every decision he and the board make. Right now, this 3 centre back nonsense is killing us and I do hope Mick has had words with Edwards that it must, must change - either home or away.
If your dream of Shea playing outfield happens let's hope he puts in a aTony Read performance
Luton. 3. 1
3- 0 Town
New signing in the building for defence ERIK!
Does the Trust have a place on the board? If so, is there any plan. Most supporters I think, agree with your analysis. Our players are suited to 442, but our manager refuses to play it. To the extent of putting players out of position to keep his concrete formation. Its madness! . Without hindsight, we were calling for a change months ago. No point in signing new players in January only to play them in the wrong place. Oh well, rant over, its Xmas , no chance of a clean sheet so Luton to win 2-1.
3-0 LTFC
A Derby own goal a la Big Mick would be a nice early Xmas present! 🎩⚽️🥅😁
About time sick note Andersen stepped off the bench and did a shift, but he'll probably pull a hernia driving to the ground Friday evening!
I prefer listening to this podcast than watching Luton this season
I've been going for 3-1 to Luton all year (and many years before) so I'm not going to change now.
Imagine Christmas in Luton. So grim 😂😂😂
Our home results have been good, our home performances haven’t. We’ve been fortunate and that can’t carry on. Further, I have no confidence whatsoever in the management team to put things right; they’d have done that by now and anyway they caused it. I’ll predict a 1-1 draw. Clearly great news on PC. But do you guys think Gary’s and the Board’s attention has been so focused on that and getting it over the line that the day to day running of the club has taken a back seat? And that has contributed to the problems we’ve seen more broadly around transfers, communications and so on?
They are Luton going down :)
3-2 Luton
Our home form is pretty good. Would be nice to get some away points at some point. But out home form is perfectly acceptable this season
With the exception of Watford and Sunderland ( latter good chances created but poor finishing prevented us gaining at least a point wheras Sunderland showed us how to be clinical with your chances ) our home form has not been good : even those teams we beat created and missed some great chances Although home results have been acceptable , overall performances and results suggest LTFC are at serious risk of relegation to L1 which would be disastrous. If performances and results don't improve by early January , and the board continue with their ' hands off / silence is golden approach , '2020 ' will have no-one to blame but themselves !
@douglaskirkwood4698 come onnnnn! There have been a few performances where we were really poor. A couple where it wasn't worth turning up but generally at home at least we done ok (not great). Even some of the away defeats we looked good at times. But the hysteria over our form is like being at a woke festival. If we had picked up just a couple of wins away we would be well happy with our home form. It is the away form that has distorted our home form
🎄MERRY CHRIMBO 🎄YOU MISERABLE TARTS, from gmanrock_luton (Gary)🎄Luton 3 - Derby 1. Luton to have a Jan clear-out and buy footballers.
How does everyone feel about the fact that all the teams struggling around us are making positive changes in their management, whilst our board just continue with allowing mediocrity at best to embed itself in our club? I’m just at a loss as to understand why the board just seem happy with the same old same old. And forget the compensation, they can afford it.
I think loyalty is more positive than change. When it turns around we do it as one!
@ I’m all for loyalty but not blind loyalty. If things don’t change then something has to.
A Christmas game for all. What is the main problem at Luton Town at the current time ??? No prizes for guessing who that is.. So why do you keep missing him out of the conversation? The podcast comes across like we are sitting comfortably in a mid table position. It's like it's sacrilegious to even mention who's at fault, let's start to reveal the truth now, and to narrow down where the actual problem lies. The team is in meltdown, it's enriched in chaos & confusion, none of the players know what they are about, because they don't know the tactics, and that's only for the players that care. To be frank the manager has had his time, and that's that. Had obviously being the operative word, there is no way back from the mess we are in, until something changes! It's not rocket science. I think you are doing yourselves a disservice when you are not communicating the true absurdity we are all witnessing in the performances that we have unfortunately got used to on a regular basis this season. I think if you were congruent on the actual scene of what is actually happening with the harmony and performance of this current poor Luton Town then fans of the podcast would be more appreciative of your show. Merry Christmas... Till the next time.. ;)
2-1 Luton
I watched the Derby v Portsmouth match on TV the other day, they certainly have the ability to hurt us. I'm going for 1-1.
2 - 0 to the town 🙂
Hashi might be aware of Wham despite age. 80's haircuts: highlights, big volume hair lots of hairspray....I reckon that would be right up his street.
There's something about Last Christmas and the very next ball, you gave it away going on in my head now...
@@Paul-cn3ij 🤣
Broken record time... Though we've obviously often been poor defensively, part of the problem for the CB's is the lack of midfield cover and it causes them three issues. Firstly the lack of a DM. Secondly, often being outnumbered in midfield centrally and lastly that the CB's are asked to fill in those gaps if there's an unmarked opponent in space and they don't always know whether to stick or twist. Playing a back 4 could fix that. A place for Marv as DM. An extra midfield body and 2 CB's only needing to concentrate on defending their areas of the pitch. So a 4-1-2-3 or 4-1-4-1 would give the defence a better chance. The other plus being that the fullbacks we have available could actually play as fullbacks without the worry of leaving gaps behind them as they won't need, or be expected, to get forward so often. If it happens on Friday though, it really will be a Christmas miracle and on that note, Merry Christmas to you both and your team and to all Hatters!
I fully expect nothing to change. Knowing Rob, he will name the same side, the same system and it will be yet another difficult game. I’m going 1-1 because as much as we have grabbed points at the old girl, we have been VERY lucky to get those wins. Great news on the stadium plans being approved too, it’s an exciting time to be a Hatter off the pitch! Merry Christmas to you both and those behind the scenes and COYH! 🎉
I disagree with your obsession with a 4 man defense. Despite your reasonings, it's still unreasonable, unless we're talking about a narrow formation such as a 4-4-2 diamond or something of the sort. Our "defensive unavailability" includes wide players, and one more injury there can severely affect a classic 4-3-3 or 4-4-2, nevermind the lack of natural substitutions. You think the 3 or 5 at the back is not good, but I disagree, I think at the moment it's a necessity, not due to performance but precisely a personnel issue, unless we play a narrow type formation for 4 defenders. But a leaky defense is usually more indicative of a defensively bad midfield, and that is where I'd put our focus. I remember watching the Blackburn game and, for example, Chong would have the ball and try to attack, get caged in and be unable to go forward or backward, yet there were no lateral options for passing because, for some reason, the midfielders were not there, not disciplined enough to stay in midfield. That positioning problem, and coupled with the fact that we only really have Nakamba as a properly defensively astute midfielder at the moment, makes things really, really difficult on the defenders. I'm excited to see Lamine Fanne come, but the winter transfer window will have to be busy. Rob is a nice guy, but he will have to be ruthless during that period. I'll have to stop watching any videos on Luton Town. The negativity of the fans generally, and the weirdly confusing negativity you guys have been expressing recently, is really bothering me mentally. It's not healthy. I'll come back when times are calmer.
Not sure how you can even say that when 3 centre backs is ALL Edward’s has played and the win ratio is dreadful. He has the players but refuses to play them. Enjoy your time away.
Thanks for that, it is the only podcast I bother with. Kevin's comment regarding the Manager's possible problem with Pelly is a question that needs asking. The fans deserve an answer. It would seem that the tea lady would get on the pitch before Pelly. Number 1 question at the next press conference please and don't allow a change of subject or pointless waffle.
We will not get in any loan players unless we have an agreement with the loanee club to purchase them at the end of the loan spell. That is why we have no Premier Leaguer loans. We have Krauss on that kind of deal. I heard that direct from a Directors mouth.
Can't agree with Morris's reaction to Walsh being sent off. That isn't leadership it's intimidation and bullying and if the Blackburn Captain hadn't pulled him away might have led to a red card for him as well. Speedy return please Locks.
I'm over, so will be at the Derby match. The lastatch that I was over for, was the Derby match (as in the match against WFC), so let's hope we put on a display of Pride, Passion & Belief, like we did against WFC. As I for people calling for PRM... have they forgotten his poor passing ability (the majority of the time). I still stand by my thought, that Morris & Taylor should start & play the majority of the match. Prediction for Friday = 2 - 0. 🥃⚽🥃
Why are you so convinced that Power Court guarantees financial stability for years to come? There are plenty of clubs for whom a new ground has become a millstone. Don't get me wrong I absolutely support it, but am not sure it's a saviour of our financials forever.
Because it's not just a stadium, and they will own everything. That includes shops, bars, restaurants and commercial space that will be used all year round, not just on match days. They will own the music venue and, probably most importantly, will own the homes that will be built there too. They may sell some of those things, or they may not, but if they do, you'd imagine they will bank the profit. And they've more than doubled the capacity of the stadium. Of course, there's no guarantees to fill it, but we're maxed out at Kenilworth Road most of the time at the moment and there's a multi-year long wait list for season tickets. Nothing is guaranteed, but they've done a tremendous job of future-proofing the whole site.
I think that lack of organisation is the key - when we miss Lockyer or Andersen we start to make those mistakes at the back. It was pretty evident last year and confirmed this year. We need one of those to get everyone else in line - Mengi and McGuinness haven't been doing it (fair enough they're young players) and Burke's been on the right when fit.
The last time we were in the championship players hated playing against clarke and Campbell now we got no one like that
Back to business as usual then, as all the optimism from Tuesday evening quickly evaporated. Strangely we used no subs in the 2nd of 3 games in a week, particularly with the final game of such a sequence traditionally seeing us run out of steam and get soundly beaten. I think we all knew that an in-form Blackburn away would be a far more difficult proposition than Stoke at home, however we effectively committed footballing suicide before a ball was even kicked. The writing was on the wall when we named the same starting 11 from Tuesday, with the same formation and players out of position again. To compound matters however Hashi had now been moved to the left of the back 3 where he always struggles. This was no less than professional negligence from not only Rob Edwards but Kyle and the Trollope. We are too open and predictable and the 2nd Blackburn goal was the all too familiar ball over the top of the exposed wing back and there we are 0-2 at half time and game over. To be honest Myself, Kevin and James could do better, even without the entourage of so-called Analysts. Switch the formation to 4-4-2 away from home with Johnson as a natural left back. Two banks of four with Hashi at Right Back and Moses at right wing where he won a Premier League winners medal ! Incidentally all 3 of those have represented their country at various levels, but in their natural positions ! My patience has run out with Edwards now and I am even starting to think he is purposely setting us up to lose, so that he gets himself fired ! Yes its that bad ! Lots of decent replacements available right now in Cooper, Robins or O’Neill. January transfer-window wise we need to recruit in weaker areas, such as left-Back and a Premiership loan of Harry Toffolo would be a good place to start. I Just hope a new manager is in place to make these calls.
Still think edwards will be gone in the new year
We are never going to get two points per home game from rest of season! So based on that we are in big trouble if not changing this mess. I refuse to go down the line we have a high amount of players that don’t care enough. This is totally down to tactics and setup.
