I lost my Father three weeks ago. I just got this album and didn't know anything about this song. On my lunch break this song came on and I had to stop driving and pulled to the side of the road and cried my eyes out. No song in my life hit me as hard as this one has ever done. Thank you James for sharing your pain and helping me get through mine.
Everything I wish I could tell my father but he's gone. 26yrs ago and I still remember his voice, his laugh, his smell when he would get back from work and catch and hug me. He was everything I wanted to be. Miss you dad
I have just lost my 2nd father. Birth father when I was 3. And Step father at 44. I'm not sure what I'm feeling ATM but the emotions this song evokes makes me realise how lucky I was for a second chance. Miss you Dad(s) X
I lost my father, Jim Beauchamp, 15 years ago on Christmas Day. He was a coach with the Atlanta Braves and I am the baby of 5. Currently caring for my mother under hospice care and this song hits home in so many ways.
Don't let a day go by without letting him know how much you love him. Mine's been gone a year and I miss him every single day. He was my hero and always will be.
Actually quite funny you said this. When my mum was dying, I related to no bravery so much. I know what the song is about but the fact JB was relating his seeing a broken human with no fight left in them, was exactly what I was seeing in my strong mother, and it resonated with me so much, sit her fight was vastly different x
He brings out emotions and sometimes I'm not prepared for it. Had no clue what to expect and here I am crying. He's so addictive and calming and soothing, and he sometimes leaves me in tears. Love to James Blunt. When you read his story you understand him so much and appreciate him more.

It's been exactly forty-five years since I left my father in Canada under rather turbulent circumstances and returned to our homeland permanently ! I never saw or spoke to him again, our hearts were filled with anger. My father has since died, and I wasn't there at his bedside in his last moments to ward off the monsters ! I can never make up for what happened between us, so this song really touched my heart when I heard it ! :(
I lost my Dad on November 27th 2024, its now 22nd December, and we are still waiting on the coroner to release him. This song brings comfort and tears. It will forever be etched into my heart now. I miss you Dad more than words can say. More than grief and more than pain - my soul will forever be missing a piece now. You were not just my Dad, the best Dad but also my best friend. I'll leave a light on Dad.
This explains the development of my relationship with my dear dad. He’s still with me and I count everyday a blessing. I moved from two states away to be near him and my momma. I commute back and forth for work each week. My dear king wife makes it all work and we will one day be back taking care of her parents who are a decade plus younger than mine but the sacrifices now are so small compared to this time with them.
This song healed me ! My Father passed 40 yrs ago, from cancer. I was with him, as well as his Mom, his wife, for that last week of his life. I wrote down the words he spake during his last week and wrote a song using those words. Great song BTW! But now, 40 yrs later I hear your song....and I went into grieving anew.....after a couple days I realized my grieving was for my Father's passing 40 yrs ago.....and your song ushered in my grieving that was sorely overdue.......And now, I can still Love my Father, and miss Him; but the grieving is fulfilled. Thank You James Blunt ! You helped me heal from something I didn't know I needed to be healed for. Finally, I have a peace I haven't felt my whole life. Thank You.
Thinking of you .. I grieve for my father still after many years ... Mostly I try to live my life so he would be proud... This song is a definition of feeling respect and of how we mask grief in the western culture.. My Dad was a Grenadier Guard and protected the royal Family so I feel James and I have this in common x ❤ my thoughts are with you 😊
I lost my father June 17th me and my brother and my grandmother held his hand and he held our and as they took of the bi pap that was keeping him alive I played this song on my phone as loud as it would go and I help his hand until his heart had not another beat and the second his heart stopped was when this song ended. He heard every word and we lived this song. Idk your story but I sure am thankful your on this planet James Blount. There’s not a more perfect voice for a more perfect song that tells the story of me and my fathers last two years together. I was so very blessed to be able to be with my father 24/7 for the hardest fight he ever had to fight. We didn’t become close more understand each other the first 34 years but on June 17th we knew everything and understood each other and loved each other and the first promise I ever kept to him was full-filled in that I told him the day I moved into his home that from that day he would never have to worry about someone not being his everything becouse I wouldn’t leave his side no matter how long he stayed in a hospital or a rehab center or if he chose not to that I’d be right beside him every single day. And I was. And it ended with me being able to play this song he had never heard before. I was proud just as I was lost and crushed. So thank you truly
I didn’t shed a single tear when my father suddenly passed away. 18 years on upon hearing this song for the first time, my tears just won’t stop. Things I wish I’ve said and done at the time…
What I really love about James is that he always sings from his heart. You can tell by his face and rasp/shakiness of his voice that the songs he sings are emotional and true for him. He doesn't just sing songs, he relives them.
I am a new father. My wife and I had our first kid a little over 3 months ago. I found this song and it broke my heart. I modified the lyrics a bit to reverse the scenario and sing it to my son every night. James you've always had some incredible music but nothing that has hit me like this.
I don't understand how he can sing this message and not breakdown while delivering the show. I never thought i would hear a song with so much emotion in it. I miss you Dad.
I found this song a little over a year ago when my Dad passed, but I found it through the Iam Tongi cover on American Idol auditions. I now listen to this song every time I think about him, every time I am feeling down, and ever time life is hard. Thank you James, this song will forever be a part of my life.
I lost my daddy (Philip) 30 years ago, but I still miss him like it was yesterday. He was and still is my best friend and inspiration for patience and kindness. Thank you James for the magic and power of your voice and your music. You helped reduce the void nature has left within me by filling it with understanding and healing tears of love for my gentle father...bless his soul, and bless you James Blunt! Thank you. ♥️🌻🤗
My dad died suddenly from a cardiac arrest while he was out and about one day. He died alone with no family beside him. I was countries away and the last time I saw him was 3 yrs ago before Covid hit. I've only recently discovered this song, and to say that this hit me like a truck is a massive understatement. It wrecks me and heals me every time I hear it. I wish I could've given him comfort during his last hours. I am a Daddy's girl through and through and I will carry this regret in my heart until the day I see him again. RIP, Daddy. You are sorely missed.
Daddy loves you. Daddy is proud of you. Daddy knows your pain and doesn’t want you to carry it anymore. Daddy wasn’t alone because he had you on his mind as he passed. He is with you, waiting for you and will always give his love to you.
I loved my dad. I was my father’s daughter but I was there to try to comfort his last days. I remember feeling like it was my turn to scare the monsters away. I miss my dad and this song hits home hard. Gorgeous.
I really love this song. It's impossible not to cry because James Blunt's performance is filled with so much feeling. I hope my dad lasts me a lifetime.
I lost my Pop 13 years ago. Thank you for this song. I reminds me of the sentiments I shared with my Pop as he was moving into the Glory. Love this song so much. Miss you Pop.
After losing my father 7 years ago, I could finally cope and let go of the pain and anger. Listening to this masterpiece let lose of all the weight on my heart. Thank you James Blunt and Iam Tongi!!
I lost my Father 2 yrs ago. He's my constant inspiration, my savior, my friend and my provider. This song is like a "time machine" to me. I can't prevent my tears to flow because of the message of this song. The best song ever! Thanks James Blunt!
I'm sorry, my friend. It's been nearly 10 years since I lost my Dad. I think about the loss less often, but sometimes, like today, the pain cuts as deep as ever. So much I wish I'd said, to so many I've lost. Too many regrets. At least I can be reminded by the pain to hold tight to those I have left. I hope we can both find some peace for our troubled hearts.
I knelt by the bed where my father later died that night, his emaciated body torn with the pain of 4th stage lung cancer, his tossing and turning fed by massive doses from a morphine drip set up by hospice in his last house. "Mary is here," his third wife told him and he thrashed to see me, reached for my hand. I cried and said, "God, please just take him." And God did. This song....this song....thank you.
HE's terribly resisting to tear down while singing.. That's imposible to do... and brave. Thanks for sharing your love to every soul on Earth. I'm sure even the biggest in Heaven are listening to this song.
James, I got a chance to interview you in Portland, Or a while back. I’ve loved you since your first song of your first album, and have appreciated every chance I get to hear you. This song resonates with your first album. Thanks for your military service, and thank you for chasing the monsters away.
Here I thought that you needed to have a good relationship with your dad to feel anything from this song, nope I’m in tears. Mr. Blunt your music is beautiful.
Both my father and later my stepfather broke my heart to shreds with all sorts of abuses and here I am looping this song time and time again. I have my own children today and trust Jesus to help me do it right by them. Hope you are doing well Bruce. I am sorry to read that you didn't have a good relationship with your dad. May God bless you...
What a devastatingly beautiful song. I lost my father 28 years ago. He was only 57. The line I know your mistakes and you know mine hit particularly hard. I haven’t cried this hard in a long time.
My father is currently dying of cancer. We’re very close. I’ve been sort of bottling up my emotions, not really knowing how to deal with them. This helped. This really helped. Thank you.
Lost my dad to cancer & heart disease exactly 16 months ago. Wasn’t there when he passed on. Always wondered if I had done enough to “chase his monsters away”. RIP daddy. I love you.
I lost my mother when I was 26 and my father when I was 30 both unexpectedly, I wasn't a child anymore but I wasn't a man yet! And I couldn't say goodbye to them! I think a lot about them, I would have liked to ask them many more things and show them what I have become, where I have arrived and what I have done. I would have liked by my side to share my falls from which I always got up stronger than before, helped by thinking of them as a supernatural force, and I would have liked them to have met my wife and children. I often talk to my children about their grandparents. Thank you Mr. Blunt for this beautiful song.
Every so often a song comes along that you don't just listen to. You get absorbed by the words to the extent you feel it throughout your body and soul. This is one of those songs.. Thank you Mr. Blunt
My dad passed away October last year. Leukemia took him. The doctors found out about it just a week before that. It was too fast. I was in the States back in the time, trying to make it home to Thailand when I knew that they took him in the ICU, but I couldn't make it back in time. The only thing I could do was clutching the phone in my hand, saying goodbye to him on FaceTime. This song gave me a good cry. I miss him so much.
i am blessed to see my father every day, he is and will always be my foundation of what a Dad should be. i find my self seeing more of him in me as I take the first steps into fatherhood. he is always around and among the many things he taught me one is I will always be around.
I spent a small fortune to be with my father on the last day of his life. While he laid in his bed, unable to move much or talk, I played his favorite songs, told him horrible jokes, read scriptures to him and prayed. I am so thankful that we had that time. I don't feel sad about that moment because he'd had suffered a long time with vascular dementia. It was a priceless moment that I was blessed to have with him.
My daddy pass away last year and this song move everything inside of me... I’m crying a river right now... I miss my dad so much😢😢😢 James Blunt is extraordinary because his music can make you feel every single feeling you have inside. This song really did that to me... In a couple of hours I have to go to work and my eyes are swollen, you did it James Blunt this song is a masterpiece... no doubt about that💕☺️
I'm sure he is from what I've seen written and said about him. His music and lyrics speak volumes about him too I think. Do you have any of your music on here?
For what it is worth I had the good fortune to meet him at a friend's wedding and he is the politest, nicest most natural person you could ever wish to meet.
James, this song has struck a deep chord with me. As a kidney donor, your song reminded me of my fight to keep my mom alive when she went into end-stage renal failure, how my mother pulled out of this was amazing and a battle with nurses and doctors that I am most proud of. My mom and I had a successful kidney transplant on May 25, 2010. This prolonged her life for an additional six years, which allowed her to meet my youngest daughter. It is very difficult when we are facing the death of a parent and your song is simply beautiful. I have probably listened to it a thousand times in the last week.
Thank you so much for your beautiful song. I never knew this song existed until Iam Tongi sang it on American idol. We all need your beautiful songs like these. Definitely healing my soul as I too am grieving for my Dads passing last month 😭😭❤❤Thank you once again for this beautiful song❤❤
Such a beautiful and very emotional song. I, too, just heard this when Ian Tongi sang this on American Idol. I lost my father many wins ago but this song still made me cry.
i was the last one from my family to leave at my dad's funeral my wife said that whatever baggage i carried within must be left then and there this song and performance only opened up old scars but i still love hearing it everytime
Here because of American Idol, but this song tugs at my heart, even though my father was not a part of my life. Thank you for sharing this beautiful song James Blunt!!!
My dad has not been well. I live across the world. This hit hard the first time I heard it and still hits hard everytime I hear it. I am now moving back after 12 years in a different country.
I never heard this song before until my mom was watching American idol. As soon as started to listen to the words I started to cry. Now I’m here listening to James Blunt and I can’t stop crying. Lost my father in 2006 but it still hurts. Love u pops.
In an era where the majority of music lyrics lack any real substance this song stands alone. It's so moving, I've been trying to listen to it and sing along for 3 days, without success. Every time I choke up. Enjoy each moment with your loved ones, that time is precious. You can never get enough, and will always wish you had more when they're gone.
I lost my dad 4 years ago and this song brought back memories . I was by my dads bedside holding his hand while he passed. Thank you for this song it was something I needed to hear, it’s hard for anyone who has a father sick or that has passed. God bless
We all will lose our dads but don’t forget to live with them while they’re here. I just told my dad I love him. He’s getting older I really enjoy getting that text back while I can
Khalil Gibran said, "Poetry is not an opinion expressed. It is a song that rises from a bleeding wound or a smiling mouth". This poetry you wrote perfectly captures my goodbye to my dad when I lost him to cancer as a very young woman 26 years ago. Though admittedly, I was far less eloquent! Thank you for creating the poetry for my wound! ❤
I lost my dad in 1984..I'm 67 now and my eldest son sent this to me.. I am soooo blessed and somehow scared?? We are fragile and yet strong as Daddy's??
I lost my Father three weeks ago. I just got this album and didn't know anything about this song. On my lunch break this song came on and I had to stop driving and pulled to the side of the road and cried my eyes out. No song in my life hit me as hard as this one has ever done. Everything I wish I could tell my father but he's gone. 26yrs ago and I still remember his voice, his laugh, his smell when he would get back from work and catch and hug me. He was everything I wanted to be. Miss you dad
His eyes reveal all the emotions inside him. Bless him, he's one of the best. Prayers for your dad, James. We all love you💙
Beautiful!!!! Great version
I'm here after watching a recent American Idol audition. What a beautiful song, James Blunt! Thank you so much.
Me too. I'm sorry to say that James voice doesn't move me at all. The guy who sang it on idol had me bawling like a baby though
Me too....
@@kelleyspartiatis5323 totally agree
@@kelleyspartiatis5323 listen to the version where James Blunt is singing this song next to his father, much more powerful.
I’m here after that same audition won :D
If this song isn't proof that music can speak to your soul and heal then I don't know what is.
I just lost my father.! I've never heard this song until American idol! I cry now every time I hear it! I'm not a big music guy! 😢
U so correct👌
😢Lost my dad 28years ago...listening to this song.. Oh how I miss him ❤
I don't know if it healed me as much as it created a leak

Wow...that hit me hard. Thanks for enlightening me.
Good for you. Wish I did! I’m sitting here smiling that James seemed to have a mutually loving relationship with his dad! Good stuff!
Tell him every day. My beloved father passed in 2014, and I still cry for him.
Don't let a day go by without letting him know how much you love him. Mine's been gone a year and I miss him every single day. He was my hero and always will be.
If "Cold" was supposed to be the new "You're Beautiful" then this is the new "Goodbye My Lover"

In terms of what the song tries to convey, probably yes. But in terms of how it makes us feel as a listener, this is up there with 'No Bravery'.

What a devastatingly beautiful song. I lost my father 28 years ago. He was only 57. The line I know your mistakes and you know mine hit particularly hard. I haven’t cried this hard in a long time.
Mine too
And the Other line: I'm not your son, you're not my father, we're just two grow men saying goodbye, no need to forget, no need to forgive...
James, you are a fantastic artist. I had your original music on my iPod in Afghan on herrick 16, it helped me reflect.
“Honi soit qui mal y pense”
Hope you're keeping well buddy and keeping the monsters at bay.
Heard this first time yesterday. Must say this is one of the most heartbreaking yet beautiful songs ever made
My father is currently dying of cancer.
RIP daddy. I love you.
I feel your pain mate!! Lost my dad to heart disease say times a healer! Don’t agree just got to learn to live with it! Hope your ok A W 👍🏻
Im sure you did, from the sounds of the love you have for him. You're both luckier than many
I lost my mother when I was 26 and my father when I was 30 both unexpectedly, I wasn't a child anymore but I wasn't a man yet!
No way this artist is singing from his soul his message go straightly to the heart .....love him
I lost my dad on the 20th of January 2023 suddenly. This song means the world to me. Thak you James. Rock on❤
Every so often a song comes along that you don't just listen to.
This song touched me deep, huge respect to you James, so beautiful it's a masterpiece!
Why I love music. He write this from the heart
i am blessed to see my father every day, he is and will always be my foundation of what a Dad should be. i find my self seeing more of him in me as I take the first steps into fatherhood. he is always around and among the many things he taught me one is I will always be around.
When their reign of missing their Dad ends, ours begins. I love you Dad.
Zo mooi!!
What heck is wrong with you James, breaking my heart this early in the day
I lost my dad 11 years ago… but it still feels like yesterday…this song says everything I feel towards my dad… whom I consider to be my hero❤❤❤❤
i love accoustics... its the purest. i wish there were only concerts like this.
I heard James Blunt’s name before but I never knew his songs until Iam Tongi’s American idol audition. Thanks for this beautiful song, James.
Once again!
Perfection!
Still noticed the shivering fingers!
We love you James!!!
Came here after Iam Tongi on American Idol. Thank you for writing and singing this song😢😢❤️
Something about when he hits high notes💯
My father is dying and this hits home. Thank you for sharing this with us....
My daddy pass away last year and this song move everything inside of me... I’m crying a river right now... I miss my dad so much😢😢😢 James Blunt is extraordinary because his music can make you feel every single feeling you have inside. This song really did that to me... In a couple of hours I have to go to work and my eyes are swollen, you did it James Blunt this song is a masterpiece... no doubt about that💕☺️
Really so emotional, one of my favorites songs of James Blunt, one of the best singers nowadays ❤
Blunt's Insanely blessed with talent i hope he's a good person, he inspires me when i write!
I'm sure he is from what I've seen written and said about him. His music and lyrics speak volumes about him too I think. Do you have any of your music on here?
the dude literally prevented WW3 go figure!
The pool is a very inspiring place to be.
For what it is worth I had the good fortune to meet him at a friend's wedding and he is the politest, nicest most natural person you could ever wish to meet.
I was honored to meet him, my son has autism and James is his hero. He was gracious and kind with my son
. Fan for life.
Going 13 yrs since my dad died. I still cry.. i still miss him.. thanks for this song.. balled my eyes out again..
I have probably listened to it a thousand times in the last week.
i never comment on you tube..this is my first time...most of the people who listen to this song will cry..good job bro..truly masterpiece..
I lost my father many wins ago but this song still made me cry.
i was the last one from my family to leave at my dad's funeral
my wife said that whatever baggage i carried within must be left then and there
this song and performance only opened up old scars but i still love hearing it everytime
James hetes unico 🎉❤😮
James blunt ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️amAzing as always
In an era where the majority of music lyrics lack any real substance this song stands alone. It's so moving, I've been trying to listen to it and sing along for 3 days, without success. Every time I choke up. Enjoy each moment with your loved ones, that time is precious. You can never get enough, and will always wish you had more when they're gone.
I lost my dad 4 years ago and this song brought back memories . I was by my dads bedside holding his hand while he passed. Thank you for this song it was something I needed to hear, it’s hard for anyone who has a father sick or that has passed. God bless
Thanks James. This song reminded me of my dad. sad but it is the cycle of life it is natural that those who raised us cared for and loved go first.
Lost my father 10 years ago to Alzheimers. Everything written in this song, I did, or said to my dad. Thanks James.
We all will lose our dads but don’t forget to live with them while they’re here. I just told my dad I love him. He’s getting older I really enjoy getting that text back while I can
Its like he sings with evey cell in his body.
So true
Absolutely!
Every cell in his body, every beat in his heart, breath in his lungs and to the last spark of his soul
Single handedly the saddest song of all time. Such an important artistic contribution to the world
I lost my dad in 1984..I'm 67 now and my eldest son sent this to me..
I am soooo blessed and somehow scared??
We are fragile and yet strong as Daddy's??
Lost my Father Christmas 2015 and can relate to this song on so many levels. Another beautiful song, Thanks James.
rocknroller1986 ❤️🥺❤️ I’m sorry that you’ve had to experience this loss. I hear you, about relating to this song on Many levels! God Bless You 🙏🏼🤗🙏🏼
