Iam Tongi Makes The Judges Cry With "Monsters" And His Emotional Story - American Idol 2023
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 18 фев 2023
- This one’s a tearjerker! Iam lost his dad, Rodney, just a few months ago and says he can still hear him harmonizing with him on every song he sings. Rodney taught Iam music from a very young age and always wanted his son to try out for American Idol. Iam is so emotional in the room that he has trouble starting his song, dedicated to his dad.

This kid was my neighbor. He, his mom and his sister came to our house and sang to us on our front porch. He came over and he and I sang together while he played that guitar. I remember when his dad passed. It was so sad. I am so happy for him.
wow. you must be proud of him
wonderful story, wonderful Iam
Wowwww ❤❤❤
That’s awesome, thanks for sharing ❤
Lucky neighbor!
ssnd big 🤗 for IAM......very lovely man
“I’m not your son, you’re not my father, we’re just two grown men saying goodbye “- just hits me hard…
Yeah I agree, that was a tough one.
Agree. My dad and I were best buddies. Being beside his bed at our home with my brothers and mom was hard but humbling. We are all humans and we had to tell him goodbye.
He reminds me of Iz. His voice soothes and moves me at the same time.
i was thinking to myself “this song not too bad” then when he said that line gahhhhdam it hit me 😭😭
Man my dad just past a few days ago from cancer and this song hit me to deep
My dad passed on in October 2023. Because of this video, he wanted it to be played at his funeral. A friend of mine performed it and knocked it out the park. Thank you Iam, I will have this memory and video, forever
Hopefully he is in peace. My dad is still around so I'ma try to still cherish the moments together
@@Victor-nv2tl make as many memories as possible, take copious amounts of photos and videos. Cheers man, thanks for the message
Wish I had something like this, my father had no funeral 😢
@ronnie7100 I hope you received closure. All we can do is hold onto the memories. The last thing they would want is to see, is us suffer
Sorry for you’re lost Brody 🥺
It's simple. A father and sons bond is like no other.
If you have a decent father...
@adamw7340 decent or not, anyone can be a monster....what you let go of is blaming yourself for it, making yourself accountable for a monster who didn't ever blame himself. Make yourself better than him and then see what happens...still havent achieved the last bit..Will lyk how it goes

a father and daughter bond also the same...miss my dad so much. he used the play the guitar and me singing
I'm a grown ass man looking at a phone sobbing. This kid is amazing.
same man, just found this and my laptop got tears everywhere
Me too bro😢
Sobbing?
@@bubbagump1306 sobbing means crying loudly
Same my man ..THE SAME !!!!!!!!
That might be the most incredible performance I’ve ever heard. No auto tune, no producers. Just a boy with a guitar, mourning the death of his father.
Phenomenal
I knew that emotion would empower him to perform at 1000%.
Singing a song like this only happens once. The nerves and emotions turn it into something that can't be captured in the studio later.
That was awesome and hurt at the same time. That lil dude just made this grown man cry. I don’t have a dad but I lost my youngest brother in 2010. Death of your best friend who is also blood really sucks man. This kid has a long road ahead but he made it I know his pops is proud!!! Rip to his pops and RIP my lil brother!!!
I prefer the acoustic guitar to the electric. He was awesome.
I am a 37 year old man. I grew up in a world where men don't cry. I am not completely devoid of emotion but I have very little emotion and not much gets to me. I can say I can't remember anything ever cutting so deep and not only did I start sobbing but to the point that I not only had tears streaming down my face, but this song stole my breath. I cried so hard that I was nearly hyperventilating and couldn't control my breathing. I haven't cried like that since I was a small child. This song hit my soul like a freight train and I need to call my dad that I realize I don't talk to nearly enough. I am sorry for those who feel this pain because they too have lost their fathers. I still have mine and I need to not take a single day for granted. It feels strangely good to cry so hard. I felt this man's pain and his beautiful voice pierced deep into a part of my soul I had forgotten existed. I've been swallowing my emotions and ignoring my pain for way too long. I think I'll listen to this song from time to time just to feel that release. What a beautiful performance, I'm honestly not sure how he can keep it together while singing it, simply incredible.
Power to you brother!
I felt your words man.
This is good healing and it's great to talk about it without any judgement.
We are all feeling the same at different levels.
Just a recommendation for you to watch his other performances including the duet with Janes Blunt of this same song!
It was hard to watch but not a dry eye in sight.
Power to you man
I had exactly the same reaction as Ritchie at 2:49. "We're just two grown men saying goodbye" just hits differently.
Omg me too. When it started I was like “oh this is a nice little love song” and then my heart dropped when I heard that line.
got a lump in my throat as soon as I heard it

To any son who's lost a father. This hits hard.
Yeah, man.
BIGTIME😓
I have my Father and it still hits hard.
I missss him sooo damnnn much and iam the oldest in the family, have to be strong to keep everyone together but when im alone, i scream…like im trying to scream the pain away from my soul…
Facts, i be damned if my eyes didn't well up when he said were just two grown men saying goodbye
"When you love so deeply, you feel so deeply." That's so definitely true Lionel ❤️
It reminds me of a saying “to grieve deeply is to have loved fully.”
Lionel is soooo genuine of a person.
Some music comes from the mouth.. some music comes from the mind... some music comes from the heart... This man's music comes from the very center of his soul. He didn't just sing a song to audition.... he gave us the privilege to enter his life and see his character, his love to see his father and his hope to secure his future. He didn't just share his music... he gave us a priceless gift. Iam Tongi, thank you.
I felt the sameway, he's going to Hollywood, and I hope he makes it deep in the finals. It got me.
Beautiful comment that has put the crazy string and graph of music into readable words and for that I thank u.

You’re absolutely right!
And notice. The only (modern) woman on the panel did not shed a tear.
@@txbassn7902 i cried
great musicians can often do very much with very little. Be it through feel, beautiful melody work, or emotional connection.
I didn't cry, after losing so many people I have learned to appreciate stuff more. I dont cry because its over, I laugh because it happened. Just remember how lucky we are to have the people we have, enjoy it while it lasts.
My mother was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer on November 28, 2023. In that time I have seen her fight for each day and to choose to make each say her best. She is my bestfriend, I cannot imagine what life is going to be without her. We are within the final stages and we don't know how long we have. Each day is a gift and a blessing.
This man's story touched a deep part of my soul. That was beautiful. I'll be showing my mom this video. I know she's going to love it.
I will pray for you and your mom.
Prayers to your mom!! She deserves the best and is doing her best throughout the process, bless you ❤❤
Wishing you beautiful memories with your mom. My father passed when I was eleven. It doesn't get easier, but rather becomes your new normal. I cherish all the time I had with him and hope you will too. ❤
I'm so sorry
Before my father passed away 2 years ago when I spent time with him I started asking him about his life. His whole life, like every memory he had. And I just listened. It’s some of the best memories I now have. I wish I would have asked sooner. I got to learn so much about him that I never knew.
I lost my dad last July after a torturous battle with ALS. Watching the strongest man I knew slowly lose control of all physical aspects in his life absolutely killed my soul. He did have have the final say in finally ending his suffering and while we will miss him so much forever, he was given one final bit of control back to his life. Miss you so much dad.
U will be ok ..
“Priced outta paradise.” Gosh, that’s sad. God bless this man and his family! What a beautiful, touching voice he has.
Sadly it’s true. Hawaii is like USA’s moneymaker out of greed.. Everything is up for the rich.
That's a song in itself and if the young man sees this?
He should pen
"Priced outa Paradise"
30,000 locals are moving from Hawaii each year. My 3 grand children moved to Vegas for a better life for them and their children. Local people that don't already have a house in Hawaii, can't afford to buy one now that starts at over half a million dollars on a zero lot(which means 10 feet between you and your neighbor with very little front and back yard. YES, priced out of paradise.
We are all getting priced out. I’m born and raised in Honolulu but my husband and I had to relocate to Arizona where we could actually afford to live
About to be priced out. Lucky enough to be living with family, but that can only last for so long. PSA don’t move to Hawai’i and if you visit pick up your trash and tip well 🙏
26 year old dude here. Lost my dad to terminal cancer when I was 19. Everything about Iam's demeanor and performance reminds me of myself shorty after my dad left and I couldn't stop crying after watching this. Wish I could give him a hug and just talk to him about it all. Love and Gratitude will always win. shoutout to all the amazing fathers out there.

To all the sons who want to make their dad proud.
This shit hits hard personally. Having a father who pretty much abandoned me at the age of 7 and now having a son of my own who is the same age as I was when my father left just brings up so many emotions. It just makes me grateful for having my son in my life because now I'm able to do everything that my dad didnt do for me.
Bless you king 💚
I hope you know that it's not ever your fault that he left...❤
I instantly started sobbing uncontrollably as soon as he started singing. My husband who lost his father a year ago was standing in front of the tv in tears he couldn’t even sit down. The only sound that filled our living room was this man’s beautiful voice and our sniffles. Truly captivated us and the room we were in through the tv. That’s insanely powerful. The gift you have is indescribable.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience. My heart goes out to you & your husband. ❤️

As an older musician of 35 years myself, I rarely give anyone a chance these days. Iam, something about you made me pause for a moment and lend my attention to you. When you began telling your story, I listened even closer...and then you began singing this song. In my 51 years there have been maybe 4 artists to bring me to tears and only one who brought tears that I could not stop. That was you!! Regardless of the results of this competition, I have no doubt you will go far with your talent. Your rendition of this song is so very special and I will pray that God brings you success. You deliver a love that is so rare in music these days. My heart broke during this performance but I immediately became a fan. This song, whether yours or not, was written for you to sing at this special moment in your journey. I truly wish you all the best in your career and life. As a Veteran, I salute you and as a father I send you my respect. Your father would absolutely be proud and is definitely shining on you. Bravo good sir. God Bless.

Those were beautiful words. Thank you for your service sir.

Iam Tongi - If you ever get a chance to read this comment, I want to say thank you. For introducing me to probably the most powerful song I have ever heard. My father and I rarely see eye to eye, yet after hearing your performance, I have a new found love and respect for him. I take him for granted when he's always had my back even though we had many disagreements. Thanks to you and James Blunt for this a million times! Now I realize that my dad isn't "bitching" at me. He just wants the best for me. It took me too long to realize, but now I can only hope to be half the father he is to me. I'm going to thank my father everyday now. Cheers and I'm rooting for you, Iam Tongi! Your father, Rodney Tongi, would be so proud!

My dad is going to get a better and better version of me from now on! Cheers to you and hope you do well too!
I’ve never seen a more genuine reaction on this show than Lionel‘s reaction to this song. You can tell he immediately thought of his father. Powerful stuff.
So emotional 💔
You can see when it started too. Around 3:00 once that line drops, Lionel's left hand started shaking and he was like, "oohh" like he recognizes something is happening to his body and soul and it was because of this young man's song.
That’s my reaction when I eat chick fil a for the first time after a few months.

“Priced out of paradise” my respect grew further for this young man and how he represents us Hawaiians/polys !!. Growing up my dad died when I was only five and can’t remember him but a lot of people said he was a very kind loving policeman in town. Known by the whole town. I can still remember his picture with him in his uniform .This really makes me cry even I’m now 70 yrs.old
I feel this too. Lost my dad 3 yrs ago. Still tough living w/o him and his love. This is soo touching
Watching from Auckland NZ both my parents passed away 13 years ago in Tonga thinking of going back first time to see family's 🙏
Love the comment
Iam Tongi, I'm a Sri Lankan and I lost my dad 9 years ago... Your song really touched my heart and thanks a lot for your performance..
I hv watched this clip for several times and still I can not hold my tears whe you sing it even it is not sang in my mother tongue...
Hats off bro.... well done...❤
Anytime that I hear this song. It reminds me of my dad I ❤ my dad. I miss him alot.
The way he looks over his shoulder to feel his dad’s presence at 3:35 when he sings “I can feel my hand on your arm” 😭
Wow. Good catch. I got chills replaying that and I believe he was there by his side like always
I noticed that too
I've watched that same apart about 100x glad I'm not the only person who noticed such a sad but beautiful moment 🙏❤️ God bless this kid .
And the judges noticed it and felt it too
The amount of times I’ve watched this I never realized that. I’m from hawaii and this will always stick with me because so many of us even at his age and younger have lost a parent so I know it hits all of us back home
"Dont be afraid ..its my turn to chased the monster away" hit me to deep.for those who still lucky to have a father just appreciate them
Listen to keep the wolves away - uncle lucious
I will .
@Rap_savy if you like that lyric you gonna love that song. Discovered it the day I drove to the hospital when I had to sign papers to take my pops off life support. Such a great song imo
i will
So true. I miss my dad so much.
My dad passed away in April 2012 at 68! I still can't believe. I miss him daily. And I will miss him till I am gone!
My dad passed away 12 years ago but his cover of this beautiful song always brings me to tears
When he looked off to the side at the verge of tears at 3:34 I broke down. It was almost as if his dad was standing right next to him. So proud of you Toko, we’re rooting for you💙💙
Damn right that one hurt real bad bc I knew ❤
Foreal😢
So true that look back got me too
😭😭😭😭😭😭
😢😢😢😢❤❤❤
No runs and riffs, no belting. Just pure singing voice that captures the essence of the song and resonates with everyone's soul. You know it's a true musician when they are not even trying to impress the audience but just singing their hearts out. He's an authentic artist born in the language of music and I hope he could make it and create his own music because it's rare to find an artist nowadays that doesn't rely on techniques. This guy is a natural gem in music industry. Rooting for you big guy.👏
he sang from his pure soul
I unliked it just to like it again Amazing ❤
This comment is just pure gold. Perfect!
Wow what a comment...I agree 101%
Angelic voice
I don't think i have ever seen a song sung with such passion. Amazing talent.
You should see Janes Blunt sing it.
Ive never cried more than hearing this.
Who else came back to hear this again just to hear it and tear up again and again dang it Iam! Go get’em!!! 🤙🏽🇬🇺

Nice to see some people out there like me! Sadness sometimes brings joy... if it's a great memory.
Lionel Ritchie seemingly had never heard the song before which made it hit harder for him, I hadn’t heard it before this either, real emotional performance
Exact my feeling. Looks like he got it when he sang "two grown men saying goodbye". 2:49 This song, from now on, will reach Ritchie differently... and me too!
We lost dad 5 weeks ago and I think of my brothers grief journey when I hear this song. 😢
My dad is here m still crying this is the power of music has ability to feel what the artist feel its amazing as human being we so blessed to have feelings
As a 27 year old who recently lost my father to dementia and being his primary care giver, this song makes me cry like a baby!
😢 I’m sorry
🙏stay strong man. My worst fear in life. Just preparing myself for it.
So sorry 🙏❤
Condolences 😢
I just lost my Mom and best friend, cried buckets, because his song is truth. 💔
"I know your mistakes and you know mine" That line hits like a truck.
fr 😔
Getting hit by a truck is not a good feeling. Are you saying the line is as bad as getting hit by a truck?
@@FullmoonEffects89 Bro has too much fullmoon effects on him, u must be really fun at party 🧸
@@aliwiz i dont go to parties 🐻
Lionel felt it hardddd too
This was the greatest audition on the show
Wow.. what a great kid and amazing performance.
35 year old, blue collar man and I am in tears listening to this young guy play this song.
From one Pacific Islander to another, very happy to see another one of us going towards success. This song choice was perfect. I used to go to Lai'e for church stuff all the time growing up, the talent that comes from the North Shore is crazy. Congratulations, Iam! All of O'ahu and Hawaii is rooting for you.
More than Hawaii. We’re all here.
Iam is a wonderful example of what's right with this show. So happy for him to have lived and loved in paradise on earth.

No kidding. 😭😭😭😭😭
For real ❤ we’re one family
Yessah!!! 🤙🏾🙏🏽❤️
I love Lionel Ritchie’s tenderness and compassion.
Yes he is a kind dude
@@easygrin1127 not compasion but emphathy he lost a father aswell .
He was wise in this video
Just an added note about Lionel Richie. I liked his music in the 80's but did not know anything about his personality. Watching the way he spoke to the performer before the presentation and the way he reacted to the performance, he showed me his deep connection to humanity and the world of emotions. Richie is the real deal and as such has been elevated in my book of performers with a soul.
This holds some spot in his heart man…
All the men cried and the one woman didn't not one tear. I am a jacked ex con and I tear up for my dad every time I watch this video. Didn't cry when the judge gave me 10 years federal prison time took it like a man. Didn't cry in prison not the place for it. I can't think about my dad without holding back the tears he died when I was 11 Im 64 now and it still hurts. RIP dad see you soon. You too grandpa.
I don't think the lyrics hit the same for women. Fathers and daughters have different relationships with their fathers. They still miss them, love them, and cry for them. But there something about this song that hits you in the place you hide stuff and brings it to the surface. Most father son relationships aren't openly loving.
I lost my son, Fabian, 6 years ago. At 38 he had severe sleep apnea, he died in front of my eyes.
Seeing Iam Tongi, who looked a lot like him, both big boys, and hearing this song, broke my still grieving heart.
One day, Fabo, I’ll see you again. I love you!
How he kept his composure for this is beyond me. My Dad passed 5 years ago and I can't even listen to this without losing it, let alone trying to sing it.
I’m in the same boat, I can’t even say the words without losing it.
I tried singing along and broke into tears . I still have my father…
My dad passed away 5 years ago on April 2nd. I'm so sorry for your loss. Sending you love, peace, and healing to your whole family.
They kept going. Jeez just let the guy sing before you make him cry 😂
@@IAmKrazyKyle I feel this comment. This video made me miss my dad and he's still with me
“We’re just two grown men saying goodbye” hits Lionel Richie right in the soul.. he remembered something right there for sure…😢❤
I seen that too.
Yes he has talked about having major depression after his own father passed. This def made him have flashbacks to his own pain and suffering
the best pure right-to-the-heart singing audition, I even couldn't hold back my tears every time watching the guy singing... from Egypt for Rodney and his great son with love
I don’t if it’s the fact that I never had a father or if it’s just his delivery, but Iam’s performance breaks me every single time I hear it.
The effect he had on ALL of us is something that only happens once in a lifetime !
Most definitely
Amen.. He is the winner now of American idol 2023..
I wouldn’t say that, but I definitely balled my eyeballs out listening to & watching this…
My dad passed a few years ago from brain cancer, I was 17. As soon as he said his dads name (my dads name was also Rodney) I got emotional. My dad was a singer, he had a few covers of singles produced in the 80s and I still have his records, this hit very close to home. Iam, you have an amazing voice, the power of emotion is uncomparable.
I lost my dad at 16 years old which was nearly 20 years ago. I know his pain, and it never really goes away.
This young man litrally won the show off of his first audition. What a legend.
True an best part
only becouse his competiton sucked ICK!"
