@Christopher Jeffery i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and im waiting for the hacking stuff atm. Takes quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
Some of the sports stadiums in the UK and abroad also use Dennis cylinder mowers another British manufacturer. Dennis only focus on the professional market but are well made. Other mowers we also use in the UK to provide a striped finish are rotary mowers with a rear roller and these are made by Hayter, Honda, Masport, Mountfield, Weibang and other brands like John Deere and Stihl
I live in the UK and use an allett 43 and love it. It is unusual for home users to use anything other than a rotary mower over here due to the cost of real mowers in general and battery mowers in particular. I have yet to find another allett owner near me or within my circle of friends, that how uncommon they are outside of public parks and sports grounds. I have found that I still need my rotary mower as well as the allett to get the grass down to a level the allett can handle if you have been unable to cut for any reason. Allet sells wheel attachments to handle long grass but to be honest, they are not very good, and when the grass is long the machine stops and blocks - a real pain in the but. I am a lawn geek and cut my grass every day, weather permitting and the allett gives a perfect finish with a good and well-defined stripe. I have upgraded to the higher number of blades for the cartage and it has been well worth it. I have a lot of other accessories and these all do the jobs they have been designed for. The lawn rake is excellent as is the crosscut attachment.
cylinder mowers aren't for cutting long grass- the wheels are to use in an emergency so you can cut your lawn and the put the roller back on when its manageable- saves you having a rotary in the garage. Most customers cut 3x a week so the lawn never gets away from them
Visiting the Tower of London, which features a large, beautiful lawn outside the wall, I asked the tour guide how the kept such a beautiful lawn with the poor weather and high traffic. “Proper mowing, proper fertilization; then you roll it for 900 years.”
ya old joke. fact is that lawn is only about one hundred years old mate. even the ones at hampton court are only about six hundred years old and they got used for sheep till about a two hundred years ago.
Works great! ruclips.net/user/postUgkxprGGPRQoChQaA8u58dt7miEpxQBKiWeJ More difficult with longer grass, though, but I was expecting that. I have a small back yard, it seemed like overkill to buy a lawnmower with an engine. This is easy to carry in and out of the basement through the bulkhead. Very sharp (be careful). At the back of the mower are little wheels, which I use when pulling the mower backwards, so it's easy to readjust direction. I'm including a photo which shows the before and after for my lawn when it was at its longest. For long grass like that you really have to put some muscle into it, and I needed to go into a new section of grass with some momentum, but when the grass is only an inch or two higher than regular cut height it's quite easy. The lawn is still patchy and full of weeds, but at least it's a good height! A step in the right direction.

That looks like a great little machine I’d have to see the follow a lot of people in the lawn industry but I really enjoy your channel keep the good videos coming
As i work for a company that sales lawn mowers in the UK and i demo a mower to a customer the cylinder mower is probably the best to get a lovely grass cut. the more level the lawn the better the results you'll get with this type of mower, the quick change cartages that you can get for aerating your lawn and dethatching your lawn will get the better turf results when used at the right time of year. also make sure that the cylinder blades and bottom blade may need attention now and then, a simple use of a piece of A4 paper and periodically that the cut from the cylinder and bottom blade have a smooth cutting action, you'll do this by hand so make sure the battery is disconnected or if fuelled mower that the spark plug lead is disconnected the paper should not drag between the cylinder and bottom blade it should be like a pair of scissors cutting across the whole width of the blade. the set crosshead screws at each end where the cartridge goes will alter the cut height distance for the cylinder to the bottom blade a slight turn is all that's needed and oil your blades will keep it good condition too 3 in 1 oil etc.
I was gonna save up for that Swardman that you demoed a few months back, but this one looks great too. Can you do a comparison of the two and a pro/con for each. I really need a reel mower, the cut always looks so much better than the normal mowers.
Atco, and Hayter are two other premium well known brands used here in the UK. Although having said that, any decent cylinder mower will work wonders. I've been treating lawns for 20 years and quite proud of my own. I also share tips in my channel. My own set up are two low end commercial mowers, just your regular mowers made by Stihl around £250 ($300) each, which are used for the grunt work, and then I managed to find an old cylinder mower with large rear steel roller and small wooden roller for the front. Got this one off Facebook marketplace for a ridiculous low price of £40 (around $55). Its been my best find ever and cuts stunning stripes! Other than these I just cut regular and not too short and this goes a long way to keeping things nice.
It really depends on what type of grass it is you have some lawns would look better with long grass. If you ever look at a golf course you’ll see different height grasses but they arent just different height they are different types of plant classification.
We don’t have a large enough offering of consumer grade reel mowers in the US. I started reel mowing this year with a manual reel. It’s fun and I’m addicted. But 11k sq for with a manual push mower is about as fun as you could imagine lol.
We don't call it a reel mower, we call it a *cylinder mower* because the multiple rotating blades form a cylindrical shape. I don't understand why the term "reel mower" exists - can someone explain it? I'm planning to get an Allett Kensington 17 next year... All the best, Rob in Switzerland.
Yeah. I'm from the UK and have had one f these now for over 20 years with almost no maintenance. I think they used to be called Suffolk Punch, which mine is. I have a petrol, but before that you could get them in a manual push version for very small lawns. You used to see them quite a lot in the 70's & early 80's but the fashion to use them disappeared with the generation from that era. Then rotary's became popular and cheaper but the downside was the overuse was f plastic, and when that breaks !!! Note of caution. You do need a reasonably flat lawn for these or they will leave scalp marks or g down one side of a dip and make it worse every time you go over it, so it's not for the rank amateur mower who only mows when they get embarrassed ever 6 weeks. It has a comfort zone which it likes to operate, so your out there every week, two at the most. But you do get the reward of a lawn better than your living room carpet eventually. Good choice of lawn type as well, we in the U.K. Use fine fescue lawns for the look I think your all referring to, bowling green style, very different to the cabbage that you call grass in the U.S. (no disrespect intended, I understand why it's used). Hope that was useful..
This was very useful and interesting. They must have sold those Suffolks here at one point, I see them come up used every so often. Seem extreme well made.
Love your channel! Have you had any issues with the reel bending if you pickup a mulch chip or twig? I'm running the little 24v Sun Joe electric reel and it doesn't take much to bend the reel and mess up the cut. I'm looking at ordering one of these in the winter but am curious how they hold up. Thanks!
I'm british with a nice lawn and this is a load of bollicks ,we use any lawn mower as long as the blades sharp . And we also have fertiliser and weed killer.
Toro makes walk behind reel mowers, I worked for a golf course as a teenager. We mowed greens with them . Takes alot of maintenance to keep grass like a carpet. Need to use Bermuda bent grass also. You'll never get Kentucky blue grass to grow in thick and short like a green or the lawns they show in England
Nice mower, buy way, WAY out of my price range. But dreams are still free. Silver Cymbal, your garage must be an AWESOME place. Perhaps you should do a video on THAT sometime. My money says you probably have some AMAZING storage ideas, too.
I have a Hayter. My lawn still looks shite. I have some very odd luck when it comes to fertiliser. Put it on in May, next day there’s a frost. Put it on in July, doesn’t rain for 40 days. Working away doesn’t help but frosts in May take the piss a bit!
I'm going to jump in as the Englishman here. Firstly: Reel mowers are not as common in England as you would think (or this video makes out), they're usually limited to extremely manicured turf like football fields, bowling greens, golf courses and very posh parks and gardens. Most brits use rotary mowers identical to the ones in the US. A casual google indicates that Reel mowers are used in exactly these same applications in the US. Secondly, I own a reel mower (I collect mowers), it's an ATCO Royale. Allett bought the rights to manufacture mowers based on ATCO's design so what you're actually looking at with an Allett mower is a cut price knockoff of a significantly superior machine. That complex array of cheaply made pressed steel drive wheels and rubber belts in the Allett? Sprockets and chains in an ATCO. That being said, my lawn is not perfectly smooth so I NEVER use the ATCO, without a mirror smooth surface the cut quality is garbage and the entire machine is unwieldy and likes to bounce around in random direction. I use a ride on rotary. Thirdly, if your lawn is not rectangular or at least had square edges, the cut will look like garbage as the roller will stripe the grass. This looks amazing on square lawns (and lasts all of an hour or two) but on a rounded or odd shaped lawn where your cut path isn't straight it will look shockingly bad. Do not waste your money.
Thank you for this insightful video. My questions is; Is it possible to use other kinds of batteries in the mower, for example the strong Ego power+ Batteries.
Well, I had to subscribe. I also live in Mass. the acorns and the pine needles are the killer for me. I kept on looking at the Cali Mower, but really wanted an electric mower....then I saw Pest and Lawn Ginja. He got a gas powered model, but I'd never heard of Allett, so I looked them up and found your video. This looks great!
I don't own a cylinder/reel mower and my grass is always green. Our secret in the UK is not the mowers it's the awful weather as you put it. Rain, rain and more rain. If we don't water the lawn in the summer it soon goes yellow. The amount of rain we get also means we use different grass varieties in the UK to the US. The grass blades are thinner and softer.
Born and bred in England for 40+ years and never heard of this brand! Looks good, but bloody expensive (starting from £699 which is currently $857!) My push reel mower doesn't have (or need) a battery, cost £30 and does the garden in 10 minutes, lol ($36.81)
They are a big brand in the UK but you won't see them in DIY Superstores etc, you'll have to go to specialist lawncare and garden machinery places. The likes of B&Q don't sell them as they don't have the capability to do warranty work, servicing etc.
The one I show is about $2k but you should try calling them. I was very surprised that my local dealer actually offered to bring it to my house, let me demo it before I bought it. Who does that any more? I don't know for sure if all their dealers work that way but Sports Turf Specialities in Wrentham Mass could not have been more professional.
Silver Cymbal I believe it. The price isn’t bad for the base machine but it’s no cheap either. I’d bet they don’t have a large clientele base so their thought probably is if you use it you won’t want them to leave with it.
My wife is from England. Just a clarification, most people use normal rotary mowers. An allet is a pretty specialist machine even by ebglish standards. That being said, I really want one (using an English Suffolk manual reel mower myself).
That means that beautiful turf is maintained by effort. The Japanese garden is small and easy, but your garden is very large and difficult to maintain. Thanks for the great video.
Thank you very much, I love Japanese gardens but sadly so few people here have them or even adopt their style. I would love to see more of that style in the US. Thanks for watching.
These quality mowers cost a bit up front but, unlike cheaper (usually Chinese) kit, they last, they do a good job and they're worth repairing if something goes wrong. In any trade, its not wasted money to buy the best tools.
In past episodes you have recommended Jonathon Green Black Beauty Ultra which has a tall fescue blend with perennial rye and Kentucky Blue blended in as well. Have you changed your grass type to allow for low reel cuts or is the low cut not hurting the tall fescue in the yard?
Hi, no still use their grass, you can cut plants at many different heights and maintain health. Yes cutting low does increase maintenance, etc. of course. But think of Bonsai, many are full size trees that in the right setting and controls do well. This video talks more about reel mowing ruclips.net/video/08v-uOUDDCo/видео.html
They are both excellent machines but now 2 years later I have moved and no longer own one at all. But if I was buying one today I would buy an Allett mainly due to the dealer support.
called a cylinder mower in UK/Australia. Acorns may ruin the blades small stones do. The idea is to clear all debris before using a cylinder mower. The correct type of turf must also be used to get stripes
I had a problem with one of the safety switches but it was too heavy for my taste and didn’t do well in our New England lawns that aren’t perfectly flat. The allett is more practical plus the fact you can change attachments is a lot more versatile.
I dunno, I think it's much more complicated to get this "English style lawn" than just buying this reel mower. What kind of grass do the English have??? How short do you need to cut it?
@@swhoite9068 I just sodded my back yard with "tifgrand", tif and bermuda, can mow from 1/4" to 1-1/2"...go low! Tighter knit, like a putting green. Will be getting my Allett Liberty 43 next week with the lawn rake/scarifier to remove thatch. As of today all these mowers are sold out in the USA with a 6-8 week wait time. So, when the people that comment above about these being overpriced and no one uses them, just ignore them. Some of us can afford quality and have the time to keep and maintain a nice yard while others have time for ridiculing others and speaking with no knowledge, other than telling us they drive a inexpensive beater...sounds to me like, if you don't care about your property much, that's your choice. Sorry you missed it. It is the cheapest battery reel mower available. Believe me I get that they are expensive but similar models here start at $3,000!
Not trying to be a smart ass And I notice reply Probably not going to get seen But I know very few people who have lawns letter flat enough to be cut with something like that my lawn is a struggle with the push mower we use That there are that flat they're too big But the one does look nice cut like that if I had a small yard and it was flatter I would totally do that It would look cool I personally love golf green grass it is looks interesting
@silver cymbal... apologies for my ill informed comment which I have deleted. To be fair to you... well done for creating thorough detailed videos and reviews. You’ve won yourself another subscriber 👍🏼
I sold the Swardman earlier this year. The Swardman is a good machine but the Allett has some stand out advantages, a dealer network across the US, price is significantly lower, the battery is user replaceable and uses standard type that can be bought elsewhere and Allett has made these since the 70s so they have a lot of experience and likely will be around for a long time ahead.
The Allett has some features I like a lot, replaceable battery, local dealers and is actually the lowest by far in reel mowing space. I also like a product that has been around a long time and the English heritage is a cool. It concerns me too that Swardman and their CEO parted ways recently.
@@dronemaddness5148 The Swardman is a good machine I am concerned about the company a bit, their CEO left recently and many features on the Allett are just better and it's not surprising since they have been making this design for almost 60 years! This machine is very rugged and you can feel the typical english built quality in it

Now I need to buy this thing. Sold
You can't even push it!
This is the English flag. 🏴
been using a jacobsen reel mower here in Texas since 1981
Awesome review!
Glad you enjoyed it
Great video
I don't own a cylinder/reel mower and my grass is always green. Our secret in the UK is not the mowers it's the awful weather as you put it.
Rain, rain and more rain.
If we don't water the lawn in the summer it soon goes yellow.
The amount of rain we get also means we use different grass varieties in the UK to the US.
The grass blades are thinner and softer.
nice video once again , what is the highest range of cut with this mower?
There are also Professional units that cut up to 3" high!!
Born and bred in England for 40+ years and never heard of this brand! Looks good, but bloody expensive (starting from £699 which is currently $857!)
My push reel mower doesn't have (or need) a battery, cost £30 and does the garden in 10 minutes, lol ($36.81)
They are a big brand in the UK but you won't see them in DIY Superstores etc, you'll have to go to specialist lawncare and garden machinery places. The likes of B&Q don't sell them as they don't have the capability to do warranty work, servicing etc.
THE COUNTRY NAME ITSELF SAYS ALL - BEAUTIFUL
Happy Holidays!
You as well!
What is the price of this mower? It’s a bad sign when the website doesn’t list the price -translation, you can’t afford it.
Same company.
Here I am at 3 am watching this video,... I dont even have a lawn.
Love that shoes 👍
Now that is an awesome video thank you once again!!
Thank you very much, I really appreciate it
That means that beautiful turf is maintained by effort.
Well put David. When you can afford quality, over time, it costs less. The item lasts, less or no repairs, reliability. I quit buying cheap long ago.
Good video, I'm sold.
Thank you I appreciate it.
i hire bunch of squirrels to take care of acorns.
Me too! It's freakin' nuts what they charge!
🤣

Always great content. Thanks!
Thank you I really appreciate it.
👍 great vid. I appreciate the info.
Are there any local Allett dealers in SE Mass?
Thank you very much, as far as I know this is our closest dealer for Mass www.sportsturfspecialties.com/ - Super nice people there
I reside in Savanna GA where can I purchase this mower from ??
Do let me know if I can help in any way; (803) 226 5036 or rhall@allett-usa.com Roland Hall
I really like that machine but what is the cost for them to ship it from England to the north east where I live is New York just south from you
In past episodes you have recommended Jonathon Green Black Beauty Ultra which has a tall fescue blend with perennial rye and Kentucky Blue blended in as well.
Thank you so much. Your videos have really helped an old guy like me with yard upkeep!
So which reel. mower do you own? I have watched your channel and see Swardmans and Allett are the ones you tested. Can you do a pro / cons Video?
They are both excellent machines but now 2 years later I have moved and no longer own one at all. But if I was buying one today I would buy an Allett mainly due to the dealer support.
called a cylinder mower in UK/Australia. Acorns may ruin the blades small stones do. The idea is to clear all debris before using a cylinder mower. The correct type of turf must also be used to get stripes
you can pick up the acorns with your scarifier or brush
@@ALLETTMOWERSUK ok thanks
Im in the market of getting a new mower. Any idea if they sell this mower here in usa
what happened toyour toro GM 1000?? those are great reel mowers!
I had a problem with one of the safety switches but it was too heavy for my taste and didn’t do well in our New England lawns that aren’t perfectly flat. The allett is more practical plus the fact you can change attachments is a lot more versatile.
Hey SC, how about a video on grass/grass seed in shady areas in our little corner of the universe.
I dunno, I think it's much more complicated to get this "English style lawn" than just buying this reel mower. What kind of grass do the English have??? How short do you need to cut it?
Mainly ryegrass. This guy is generalising a bit though I'm the only person I know that uses a cylinder mower
We ignore your comments. When you mature and care about what you surround yourself with, get back to us...until then...go brush your tooth. Have a wonderful life.
@@nelson1525 are you targeting that at me?
Just waiting on the next stimulus check to buy this lawnmower lol
If Dr. Who mowed lawns, I'm sure he would use that one!
Is there a U.S. distributor ?? What a cool reel mower.
Yes there are many across the us, check out : www.allett.co.uk/homeowner-mower-range/ under dealers
Do you know what is the Max cut height? Can this be used on warm season grass like St. Augustine?
Yes 1 1/4" is the max height
Do they sell them in Australia?
How do you adjust the cutting gap?
I also live in Massachusetts and I was wondering if they have any local dealers around here. Where were you able to buy that mower?
Yes check out Sport Turf Specialties in Wrentham
"Its the cheapest battery mower in the U.S" Allett Reel Mower is over $2,000. I think not man.
How does the allett mower work with a lawn that’s NOT so flat, like a golf course ??
What type of grass is that on the English lawns? Looks insanely short.
Nice lawn
Thanks 👍
Can you use this on St. Augustine grass ?
cool video! I like lawn. But my garden is very small.
Thank you very much, these are great if you want to get a perfect lawn especially with a very low cut for a gold course type look.
sweet dear baby jesus homeowner christ, that Liberty 43 is pricey
I want to buy one so much!!!!
Just got finished watching your video the question is it’s a year later are you still using the mower and what is your thoughts of only one?
@silver cymbal... apologies for my ill informed comment which I have deleted. To be fair to you... well done for creating thorough detailed videos and reviews. You’ve won yourself another subscriber 👍🏼
No worries. My videos are always the real deal. No fakes or theatrics.
What happened to the Swardman? Which is better?
I sold the Swardman earlier this year. The Swardman is a good machine but the Allett has some stand out advantages, a dealer network across the US, price is significantly lower, the battery is user replaceable and uses standard type that can be bought elsewhere and Allett has made these since the 70s so they have a lot of experience and likely will be around for a long time ahead.
So the roller in the back is what gives you stripes, correct? Great video btw, can't wait to get one!!
Yes it does! A regular mower will stripe from the grass being pushed over this accentuates a lot with the extra roller.
Hi, how do you compare this to the swordsman electric?
Why hasnt allett made it to US golf courses yet?
I WANT ONE!
The secret for a British lawn water it with tea
All while shouting God save the Queen
*So there’s a dad in all of us*
So now, which one did you like the most? SWARDMAN Electra or Allett?
The Allett has some features I like a lot, replaceable battery, local dealers and is actually the lowest by far in reel mowing space. I also like a product that has been around a long time and the English heritage is a cool. It concerns me too that Swardman and their CEO parted ways recently.
@@SilverCymbal I saw in onset of your posts that you sold your Swardman. Why?
@@dronemaddness5148 The Swardman is a good machine I am concerned about the company a bit, their CEO left recently and many features on the Allett are just better and it's not surprising since they have been making this design for almost 60 years! This machine is very rugged and you can feel the typical english built quality in it
