    Hey, it's a cool layout - my first time seeing how an ore railroad operates. Love the yellow paint scheme and scenery is fantastic.

    That was cool mate. Thanks for the explanation as you were going along. I really like your sliding magnet for the delayed uncoupling, and the scene where the workers are changing the trucks on the ore wagon is awesome

    G'day Thomas, I enjoyed your video. It tells the story and shows how much operation you can get out of a single industry layout.

    I like how you've turned your set into a huge sorting game. It gives you something to keep it fresh instead of hitting a dead end of getting everything the way you want it then just watching the trains run in circles.

      Thank you. yes, operation of my railroad was the main goal. I enjoy the 'game' and partake in sessions with other like minded modelers who recreate different scenarios on their layouts. Check out a group called OPSIG for more information.

    Excellent video! Thanks for sharing! I like your idea of the ball colored push pins. I use Tab-on-Car, but those a really nice for coal/ore loads.

    whoaaaa, slow down. As someone who works hauling Iron ore, yard speeds are 10 mph, while top speed on an ore dock is 5mph. Also, the loaded cars are very heavy, up to 80 tons or so, and need to be "lifted" slowly to allow the slack to even out. Knuckles and drawbars are the reward for not being careful. This will add time realism to your operation. Beyond that, it is great to see model railroad operations based on Iron ore. Fantastic!!! Check out a guys layout that also deals with ore movements from the mid 50's. He's on RUclips under Gogebic Range Railroad. Enjoy and keep hauling that ore.

      The loads are way far too much iron ore is very dense/heavy. I know Jennies were designed for iron ore, but that is unrealistic. I was a track supervisor at Ashtabula, Ohio. They used standard hoppers and you could look inside a loaded hopper car and see the hopper peaks (2-3 foot depth), the springs were totally compressed. You would thought they were empties.

      First of all I LOVE your layout as well as those RS27's. I agree that your coupling speeds are too high. CSX timetable#2 states that anything over 7 mph when coupling is damaging.Also locos stop after coupling they do not couple and push. This creates forces that could exceed the tensile strength of the draw bar or knuckles.Your speeds when starting a pull should be slow to "run out the slack"between coupler knuckles. This well prevent "Pulling a drawbar".If that happens, the shank of the coupler will pull out of the draft gear thus breaking the train in two. Also the train line glad hands will uncouple and the train will"lose air".This set the brakes into a penalty application and into"Emergency".Your car department will not be happy replacing a 500# coupler back in the draft gear and then driving the drawbar into the slot that goes from the draft gear through the coupler shank and out the other side of the draft gear.My Dad was a car knocker on the C&O and he hated doing that. BUT very good layout.I love your dowel rod switch throws..

    I really enjoyed your setup and how you do operations I have a small apartment layout how could I set up a coal industry and then how do you run the operation knowing how many trains to push and pull

    • @splitrock323
      @splitrock323  2 года назад

      Thank you. Are you setting up the coal mine or the coal receiving industry? Coal can be classified in many ways. By size ( Lump, egg, stoker, etc) and by type. ( Lake coal, export coal, coking coal, metallurgic coal..) So you can add switching and operation even to an industry that seems to handle only one commodity. I really like operations and would be willing to help you if I can.

      @splitrock323  5 лет назад

      Austin Yingst Thank you. Good question. In my latest video I show how the colored pins represent different grades of ore. The pins in the ship diagram give an idea of how many more ‘shoves’ an ore boat needs to be filled up.

    How do the magnet couplers work? I love the hands-free affect that's great

    • @splitrock323
      @splitrock323  5 лет назад +1

      Brian Malaquias Good question Brian, thanks. The couplers are Kadee. I use the #5 type. They have a metal trip-pin. When the couplers are over a magnet that is installed between the rails, the magnetic force pushes the couplers apart, as long as there is some slack between the cars.
      I use different types of their magnets, depending on the situation.
      Look at the Kadee website or other videos on RUclips that have Kadee couplers featured.

      @@splitrock323 I love it that's great. Because my son and I are starting a HO scale layout and he and I both got to be honest or having trouble uncoupling the cars but if they could be uncoupled magnetically and I know noe that KD number 5 couplings are grade A lot of people use them and they've recommended them, that would help out a lot better. Thanks so much for your help this is great

      @@splitrock323 may I also ask ask how you made the hand-made turnouts? That's awesome.

    • @splitrock323
      @splitrock323  5 лет назад +1

      Brian Malaquias Get some simple tools. A Kadee height gauge and a Kadee coupler adjustments pliers. They will last you a lifetime and make operation so much better.
      Read about the different types of magnets (strengths) and how they are used. Hands free operation is the best. Less damage to equipment and layout.

    • @splitrock323
      @splitrock323  5 лет назад +1

      Brian Malaquias The track is made using tools from Fast Tracks. A compound Canada that makes tools so that you can build any type of track work and it is in perfect gauge. Check out their RUclips channel and website for ideas. If you can solder and file, you can build perfect turnouts.

  • @toddbehrends1373
    @toddbehrends1373 7 лет назад +2

    I am guessing that the slack action on the couplers is how you can uncouple the cars, and why they don't uncouple while moving over them?

    • @splitrock323
      @splitrock323  7 лет назад +1

      Todd Behrends Correct. I use Kadee Non-delayed uncoupler magnets in the yards. Cars must have slack in them to uncouple. Pulling a train over the magnet won’t cause it to uncouple due to a weaker magnet.

    Great op session, I learned a lot about ore operations from this. the sliding uncoupler is very slick. photo mock ups also cool. The white scale vehicles you have, are those cast resin or 3d printed? I really need some of that 70's 80's era autos for my collection. Nice work, I'm subscriber 707

    • @splitrock323
      @splitrock323  7 лет назад

      Robert Trainor Thank you for kind comments. The white cars are from Shapeways and are 3D printed. I need 1960’s vehicles that common cars and not the flashy muscle or exotic types. I only have one road so I can spend more money per car since I only need a dozen or so.

    Is this line a short line railroad company? Although the engines are plain with nothing special I like them. Simple can be good and I really like the yellow color on these engines. I am just not familiar with the line. Is this a Ohio based railroad that primarily hauls ore?

    • @splitrock323
      @splitrock323  5 лет назад

      Therealityoftoday The Splitrock Mining Company is situated in northern Minnesota. It is a short industrial line that only hauls iron ore for the mining company.

    why do the cars have a ball on the top of the load?

    • @splitrock323
      @splitrock323  7 лет назад +1

      goodmuzikfan Good question and I am asked that a lot after people watch my videos. It is the top of a small map pin. The different colors represent different grades of iron ore. The grades ( I use only five ) must be sorted and ‘blended’ in the boat to meet the steel mills specifications for that load. It allows me to incorporate switching into a Railroad that only hauls one commodity.
