Welcome back to Aurora Tech Channel. When I first received the review request from Sovol, I thought it was just a cheaper version of the Ender-5 Pro that cost $299. However, surprisingly, instead of removing features from the Ender-5 Pro, this Sovol SV05 actually added more features and made some improvements. Let’s take a look at what these 2 machines have in common. They both have the same extra sturdy box frame, the print bed moves up and down to work as the Z-axis, and the Y-axis is controlled by one stepper motor and uses a dual shaft. They both come with a classic LCD screen, mechanical limit switches, a single Z-axis, the same Creality V4.2.2 motherboard, and the same spool holder, as well as other small parts.
The Sovol SV05 added a Creality CR-touch auto bed leveling sensor, replaced the Bowden setup with a direct extruder, and added an anti-backlash spring-loaded nut on the Z-axis. There are also 2 arms made by injection molding to provide better support for the print bed. Besides that, there are some improvements in cable management and the location of the screen. It looks like these are the upgrades that most Ender-5 users wanted to be added to the printer, so this $299 SV05 looks pretty good to me in value. The reverse bowden tube is there to prevent the backlash unravelling the spool when the head moves around. Your filament guide will help, but I think you'd have better results with the reverse bowden.
Yes I agree, reverse bowden is a very steady solution. If you print from tight spool, or from a tight hank this is a must have. As reverse bowden makes to work only feeder to pull the filament(which is its work), while without it X or Y motors also work in this task, and this is not good at all, sometimes it leads to excessive filament loops floating around, and can end even worse.

I was so impressed by the video that I ordered an SV05. Then I bought 2 ender 6 for parts now I don't need the SV05. Although the SV05 is a great printer, I love fixing/troubleshooting more than printing. and Sovol doesn't sell returned SV05. So anyone in Greater Cincinnati or Northern Kentucky wants to buy a brand new unopened SV05. Just search Marketplace for SV05.

What an amazing review and test of this printers capability. Aurora Tech really understands what a printer is capable of, and challenges it to the limits of what came in the box, and then beyond. The details on variations and modifications from the stock setup are worth the print weight in gold.
Manufactures could really learn something from watching an Aurora Tech review of their product. Hopefully you are offering this as an option paid service to manufactures requesting a review. ;)

Sovol needs to knock off the Creality Sprite and set it up with 300 C hot end and programing out of the box. I like the user interface better than the new creality touch screen as you mentioned. I've been waiting years to upgrade my printer farm. These companies drag out these improvements forever. I've been making the same upgrades they provide two years ago for less cost. Lets get with it Sovol! Hope they watch the review you do a very good analysis.

Oh Great Little One, thank you, thank you ALL for a another nice Monday Begin the Week informative Video. Good catch on the Bed heater cable, agree on strain relief. My 10S Pro gets scary sometimes. The video does show the advantage of the Box Frame versus Bed Slinger (I have Z Struts) but also the huge space it required for such a small print area. However, for smaller accurate parts even High temp CF filaments it works well. I really enjoyed the detail you cover on the Filaments. I have always had trouble with Nylon and PC and wanted to try CF for some parts that get hot or see a lot heavy use. Model Train parts. I ordered some erywhere $12 PLA after seeing your results several weeks ago and it is working beautifully. At $12 I got 5 rolls and use it for my test prototypes in Red so I know they are test parts. When I finalize I can move to PLA+ in Black and very few new issues. I also printed a Chrysler Building and Empire State Building for my Wife's NYC train loop. Wow this 10S Pro V1 with Upgrades it just amazing. 390mm tall Yeow!

I almost bought this printer off of your recommendation. I would have made the purchase, but I found an ender 5 pro at too good of a price to resist. Plus, I have all of the extras I can cannibalize off of my Ender 3 v1.

Sovol printers have to be the best value on the market right now. The overall feature sets and quality are just better than other printers for the same or more money.

At the moment, Amazon is listing the SV05 for $259.00 with a $20 coupon making the price $239.00. I had six printers already and until just before the holidays I seldom run more than two, on occasion 3 at a time depending on what project I'm working on. Several weeks before Christmas, everything is running 24/7.
I didn't need another printer but if I stumble on to a deal that seems like it might be worth a deeper dive I'll take a looksee...
I must say that it was your video that gave me the final nudge to make the purchase. I ordered it Saturday, expecting it to arrive this week Thursday, but it arrived Sunday, yeah, next day...
My other printers are all FDM bed slingers. Having had the SV05 only two days, I'm looking at all my other machines and thinking I should buy aluminum extrusions in bulk and convert everything to core XY.
This printer, the SV05 is just so nice to work with. I know Sovol has been releasing a lot of new machines recently. Perhaps they should slow down and give the market a chance to cath up and tell them what it wants. I was thinking I'd like to try the planetary gear direct drive extruder, such as what comes with the SV06, but I can't help but think that for the same price, the SV05 is a much better value, especially to one who's never printed on a core XY.
I would definitely recommend the SV05 over every other machine I've bought.

Excellent review AT 👍🏻. Keep up the great work but don’t get burned out! Remember to (frequently) take some time for yourself so that you continue to enjoy doing reviews. I got burned out around the point when I was receiving 10+ products a week for review/commercial production (not this YT account, this is my anon acct 😉). I now aim for 1 product per week which can still be overwhelming if I don’t take breaks/mini vacations and disconnect from tech.

Not sure if anyone already mentioned this, but apparently lots of people are experiencing feeding issues with this printer. I got a new one recently and I certainly did: it appeared it was getting clogged or as if the extruder couldn't get sufficient traction on the filament, even with the spring tightened to the maximum.
Turns out that if you look down into the extruder along the idler on the arm you use to feed the filament in, the idler is not inline with the hole deeper into the hotend. Turns out they put a washer in between the idler and the arm. Unscrew, remove the washer, fasten again, feeding issues gone!!

i love my ender 5, its the first printer i got that worked out of the box so i say its what started me on my 3d printer hobby that got carried away. my first printer was the tevo tarantula an it was a mess an printed but it was when u had to have glue or hairspray to get the prints to stick so it was really a mess. the ender 5 was the first printer i got that let my 3d printing area become a cleaner work space. i have 12 printers right now, all in enclosures an only mess i have now is little bits of the filament. i dont know if would have gotten into it as much if i would have had to stuck with using stuff like hairspray to get prints to stick. now i only have to do it with a very few filaments an i have a set of glass that i have just for glue stick. i need to find something that is meant specifically for 3d print an im sure it would work better but so far the stick glue has always worked. i always wanted to get another ender 5 but always ended up with something different.
This is such an awesome printer, overshadowed by the SV06, and unfairly so.

Spiderman infill was excessive.
A few tweak would have fixed the minor stringing.
Brim + Brim For supports would have strengthened the support adhesion to bed.

I am considering buying my first 3d printer the next days, hopefully before 11.11 to get a nice discount, but I am not sure yet of which model. I have been researching and watching videos and yours are amazing. First I was considering an ender 3 v2, but then I had contact with some others "budget and ready to go" printers such as neptune 3, sv01 pro, kp5l and anycubic kobra. All these printer are available in my country in the same price range - except sv01 pro which is cheaper. How would you recommend? The kobra is my favorite right now.
Using the solder pads on the bed heater to support the wiring is a really bad idea. And by really bad, I mean "criminally stupid". I wonder how many have been ripped out?
I just recently discovered your channel and I am very impressed! Not only are you very knowledgeable on 3D printing, but you don't shy away from printers that would never catch the eye of the other channels. Ones that we would have never heard of otherwise.

This is honestly the review I was waiting for. I'm looking to get my first printer and I think I'm narrowing it down to the Sovol SV01 Pro or this SV05. I'm still not exactly sure what what I'm going to go with, but these comprehensive reviews really help. It seems like where Sovol dropped the ball with this was the single gear extruder. To get so much right and then fumble that seems like bad planning. That said it's the same with the SV01 Pro, so maybe it's just something to plan to upgrade. Gah! Decisions are hard!
For your first printer, you should not be too concerned about this single gear extruder. I have two printers with single gear variants and I never print "decorative" items; I use the printers for real projects making parts for robotic cars and office stuff. You should also stick - INITIALLY - with PLA filament until you get some experience. Aurora Tech are completely and totally experienced users - recall the use of VSC/PlatformIO - to modify Marlin firmware. Can you do that?
@@thorntontarr2894 Good point. I plan on using mostly PLA for war gaming terrain, so maybe it's a mountain out of a mole hill. Still thinking about which style is better for me. I think the bigger build plate of the 01 is probably the better bet.
Planning on buying my first 3D too and am deciding between those same Sovol he mentioned or the latest elegoo neptune, I'm having this feeling that sovol performs better overall, but that single z axis look really outdated. I plan on printing mostly on PLA (prototyping/house items) but definitely will dig deeper into other materials. Which one would you suggest?
My Biggest Worry towards manufacture not your channel Would be over time the bed is going to sag until it is no longer able to compensate I cant believe they did add to more z rods to give you a solid build. Sometimes there so close to perfection but miss the mark. I feel like when purchasing were looking for the long term after the 5 to 6 hundred hours on the machaine i would love to see the same prints.

Hi Aurora, another great video. I have been interested in the new Creality Sonic Pad, but so far no reviews anywhere. I hope you can do one as soon as you can get a unit. Adding this to an Ender S1 Pro looks really really interesting. A comparison to the Bamboo Labs Carbon would now seem highly appropriate, especially print speeds. Is the use of Klipper one of the "secrets" behind Bamboo Labs performance ?

Very good Idea. Is there some kind of "tutorial" how to replace the original extruder with an Orbiter 2.0? Is there any need to recalibration/ change of firmware settings or other adjustments needed?
Dunno if you can just change the heat breaker and edit Marlin max temp, you gotta take care also of the thermistor, it's not given that it can do more than 260c if it's made of silicon / PTFE. Other than that terrific review / story, congrats.
Dual gear extruders have problems with flexible filament. Due to the gears needing to mesh on dual gears, the maximum filament squish is limited, and allows flexible filament to slip right through. Single gear extruders do not suffer this as it has no maximum squish, and in my experience are far more reliable, even if not ideal due to filament chewing.
The glass build plate was only sent out with the first few printers. So reviewers got these, but effectively false advertising on sovol's part.
Mine when it turned up was built like a mud pie!! less care than that perhaps?
For a start the top and bottom pre assembled frames were out of square and not put together flat, so first up was to disassemble and reassemble the pre assembled frames.
The x and y belts are full of aluminium swarf. Which if not removed will shorten the life of the belts, and likely end up in the electronics, which may be a death sentence for that.
Next, the y axis POM wheels were so tight that one had split and several were flat spotted. 6 damaged of the 8. on that axis.
Both y axis drive rods were installed at an angle, and given they are on solid couplers to the y axis motor, this made them eccentric, not what you want on a drive system, for either the bearings or the smooth running of that axis. They were out both vertically and horizontally. One of the drive pulleys was quite hard up against the side bearing, so much so it was pushing the bearing mount outwards.
The x axis POM wheels were so loose they were almost falling off, the head had come off the rail. So more reassembly.
To add insult to injury the provided allen keys were not a good fit for thePOM wheels meaning I now needed extra tools.
Finally the z axis, as you can imagine I am not hopeful by this stage. And not to be disappointed, the rods and the lead screw are not parallel, nor was the top and bottom mounting frame for this axis. So yes, like the rest of this printer I had to disassemble it and reassemble it properly.
This is pathetic for a 'factory' built machine. Obviously no jigs are used in the assembly of these printers. First the frames then the drives.
Now onto the extruder, which the tension adjusting thumbwheel had locked itself in the minimum tension position... well why not, I have rebuilt the rest of the machine, now for the extruder. It had to be completely stripped down to get to that part and reassembled properly. Whilst I was doing that I noticed that the nozzle was also damaged... Oh dear... really????
Remember these are a 'pretested' machine. How the heck was this one tested?
And Sovol promised me this is not a refurbished or second hand machine. So this is how they are sending them out!
Over a month on, I still have not received the other parts I ordered at the same time as the printer, nor any of the faulty parts to get this machine finished... So in all, it is a lot longer than an hour build... had it been done right by Sovol, yeah easy in an hour, but their lack of care may extend it by quite a bit!
On the up side, their cuts and holes drilled in the frames are good.
So in all, is this an Ender killer? Not with this level of service from sovol.
Oh, and if you are wondering if this was my fault, I did this for a job for many years, laser cnc and printer service. plus design and build.
Looks awesome! What kind of speeds can you get on it? Since it doesn't have to fling the bed about and it has a sturdier frame it seems like it should be able to get pretty quick
Going up to 80mm/s is still alright, but more than that, the single gear extruder can't keep up.

Aurora, thank you for another great review. I have a question; where did you get the source code for the Sovol SV05 firmware? Was it provided to you on the SD card that came with the printer? I looked at the Sovol site, and all I see is a .bin file for the firmware.
It just standard Marlin firmware, you can download the latest one, use the Ender-5 Pro configuration files and make just a few minor changes. Or you can ask Sovol for the firmware.

In your recent video review of the SV06 plus you mentioned you that have replaced your SV05 extruder with a Creality Sprite Extruder Pro. Are you using the standard Sprite hotend/nozzle and part cooling or do you plan using a higher flow solution like the Ender 5S1? How have the SV05 printing performances improved?
I am asking as I am considering the next steps for my SV05 which is stock, other than getting rid of the reverse bowden, upgrading the part cooling shroud and klipperising it with a Biqu CB1. My current performances printing PLA are good, with the exception of printing complex first layers where I am still struggling with bed adesion/blobbing.

Hi, what is your progress with coupling the Sprite with SV05? Which one you've selected? (I see different positions on site, both are pro and 300C), do I need a kit or?

Some will call this a "kit". I would call it a "knocked down for shipping with 'some assembly required' " Is a kid's bicycle that the parent has to assemble a kit? No, it is just a disassembled bicycle broken down into sub-assemblies to fit in a shipping box. Think how IKEA stuff is packaged, it's the same thing. A true kit would be broken down even more with NO subassemblies in the box, just parts. If the printer were to be shipped fully assembled and ready to go, the box would have to be much bigger with more padding and the cost to ship would probably more than double.
Is Sovol a parent (or child) company of Creality? This printer looks like it is using many Creality branded parts, that are probably interchangeable with a Creality printer. Certainly a good thing.
BTW flipping the X and Y axis means nothing, it just rotates the position of the object on the bed 90 degrees. The only time it would matter, is when you need to manually move the print head during setup, then knowing which way is X and Y would be important. When the bed dimensions in X and Y are identical, who cares if the object being printed is rotated 90 on the bed, the end result will be the exact same thing.

The X plate screw holes are not the same as the Ender-3 or CR-10, you need to drill a few holes on the plate to make it fit.

I saw you mention in comments about using Ender 5 Pro configuration when rebuilding Marlin. Any tips on what things needed to be modified? I have asked Sovol for the firmware, but so far no response (it isn't on their site either).

What are your retraction settings for the pa-cf and gf? I am having difficulties printing it on my modified ender 5 plus I have the DIY printed direct drive Upgrade and a phaetus dragonfly bms.
I have been trying to print a collapsible pirate sword with this printer and keep getting blobs in between the extendable parts of the sword. I have watched a bunch of videos that suggested a lot of different solutions but my fear is that the single gear extruder just can't retract enough to prevent the blobbing from preventing the extendable pieces from working. I have tried slowing the print to half speed, negative and positive horizontal layer expansion, increasing retraction, zhop, random z seam, aligned z seam etc. I have wasted a lot of time on this and I am not sure if this printer is capable of it.
Since this has a creality board, would a sonic pad work?
Just bought this 3D Printer, and after adjusting the tension on he wheels it prints quite well. I moved the filament holder to the top but I can't seem to find a suitable filament guide. Do you have the STL for the one that you created? Can't find it on your thingiverse account.
