Stefan Forrer no, i think that is unknown. Underrated is more if the people who know it do not appriciate it for what it's actually worth. Like good information presented in a non engaging way so that people percieve it as boring. At least that has been the difference for me. Don't know the official definition actually.
It's obvious that you spent a lot of time watching cable news in your research for this video. I'm sorry you had to suffer but I'm also glad that you risked your sanity for our benefit.
Problem is people are watching news to be entertained. This to me explains the rise of the "comedian-journalist" I've been seeing. We watch news (specially political news) like sports: to see if our team is winning or if the enemy team is losing, when news are really not about that.
I've often wondered about the effects of turning the headlines into comedy. I loved John Stewart and Colbert when he first started, but it started to nag at me that they were talking about things I should be mad about and I'm just laughing it off. The problems persisted, but we had laugh therapy to help us get used to it. Also, our moral superiority gave us comfort for knowing that, while it was certainly happening in our backyards, it at least did not have our approval.
Jardel Elias well, you know, this probably wouldn't be happening if political parties had not been created, like Washington wanted. And if whatever asshole created cable news networks had just not.
Watching Colbert is painful for that reason - not him, but the audience. Constantly cheering and applauding when the poor guy is just trying to get laughs.
Thread Bomb it's hard to get laughs when 95% of the show is "trump are bad everyone is a nazi bigot angry white male". If you're getting cheers and applause instead of laughter you're not doing comedy, you're affirming beliefs. To quote Norm McDonald, Trump Is a crutch for shit comedians and bad joke writers and Colbert's show is evidence of it.
That is part of the problem. That you have a team at all, I mean. If you have a chosen side, you are always going to be biased yourself, not only about how you inform yourself but what you choose to focus on as sensationalist. Try to remain non-partisan and you can see the shit from both sides.
This formulated all my frustrations I have with media last years. It also troubles me how entertainers/comedians act like a journalistic authority only to point out they are "just an entertainer" when that authority is questioned.
@@mantistoboggan5171 i think it's in fact the tragically named new beauty pageant for well informed young ladies to compete against one another over their awareness of current events, and not at all how they look in a bikini to a panel of suspicious looking judges
Another spot on piece of content that nails it. I've recently found myself watching American "news" and realised that it's not really news but somebodies opinion of it. Morning Joe for example is excruciating. One guy blurts out his opinion repetitively whilst Mika pulls faces and makes denigrating noises in the background like some kind of sheltered middle class housewife tutting at the state of next doors garden and the fact their daughter comes home late at night. Thank you for showing my that I'm not going crazy or that it's a sign of me getting old. (which it probably is but still). Georg, you need to be bigger than you are on here and surely it's just a matter of time.
Alex Jones is so very reliable. Thanks to him, I was ready when Obama took my guns away and put me in a Fema camp. Wait, that didn't happen, and none of his followers called him on it. Why would that be?
Umberto Eco has done a great deal of research into this topic and in the topic of printed media in general. The Prague Cemetery is basically a deep dive into the uses and mostly misuses of the printed media. Numero Zero is a novel he wrote while researching another novel in the early 00’s and published right before his death and it deals specifically with sensationalism, conspiracy theories, and imported bias in newspaper writing. Highly recommended is also his non fiction
Konstantin Belyshev The novel Farenheit 451 is a good exploration of the tendency of authoritarian governments and their allies to manipulate sources of information.
"Umberto Eco has done (...)" In the same time, Eco was a leading advocate of Radical Enlightenment, reflected in his anti-clerical propaganda in his praised novel. The print media began with the Reformation and politicized bias has dictated the editorial lines of private publishers, ever since. News reporting, like historiography, is never 'neutral' or 'factual', but about selecting preferred _'narratives'_ and _'framing'_ facts, accordingly - towards constructing an _identity_ . This modern institution is to be regarded as a secularized Church, an _utopian cult_ .
Nailed it. It's even more frustrating with publicly funded broadcasters like Australia's ABC. High paid personalities are not required for a publicly funded outlet.
Well, in Germany there is a news outlet called "Tagesschau" which always brings the news in a very dry and unoppinonated tone. There are ppl who say they are biased too, but even if so you would never notice.
