I was born in 1970 so only a year before Six Flags opened. They were always referred to as The Drunken Barrels as far back as I recall. When Six Flags opened, I was too young or too short to go on what my parents called "The Big Kid's Rides," but my Mom ever so patiently stood in line with me multiple times so she and I could ride the Mo Mo Monster. The smell of the blacktop pathways will forever be etched in my memory.

Nice video.... but Tom's Twister was actually located over where Taz Twister is in the Bugs Bunny kiddie area. I loved Tom's Twister and was very upset when it was taken out.... but the park gave it a lil nod by naming the new ride Taz Twister.

They were called Hannibarrels and the main rotating platform would actually tilt

Each barrel had a wheel in the center that could manipulate the direction & speed of the barrel. If inclined you could just sit and relax as the floor turned around, as some family types would. Or you could be immature and nearly get kicked off the ride for not knowing when to say stop with your barrel - a team could create chaos.
No set number of members to a barrel, two to ten could seat.

So This wasn't Tom's Twister, this building has been in the park since it's opening. Tom's was located back next to the Illinois train station.

I had always wondered what those barrels were because i’d seen the ride sitting there rotting forever and never saw the ride in action, interesting.

Hannibarrels was the name the park gave it (according to old maps).

Haven't been to Six Flags in years but loved going there as a kid and Tom's Twister was one of my favorites. Though if I was to try and get on it today I would probably get sick and not be able to move for about an hour afterwards.

Powder Keg 1971 1996/2013 Intamin Drunken Barrels Ride was SBNO from 1997-2013, removed at end of the 2013 season to make room for Tsunami Soaker.
    Other Names - Hannibarrels (1971-1995)

I miss these so much!!!! And Mo Mo the Monster. And more recently Rush Street Flyer and Highland Fling.
Staples of my childhood. I only got to ride the Powder Keg barrels once and LOVED them. They closed down the next year and played tricks on my heart for years to come because the ride stayed for quite a while after shut down. I haven’t been back in quite some time and almost cried when I saw they turned them into seats
You, sir, have made my day.

FYI, The Rush Street Flyer still exists. It's called Gravitor and can now be found at La Ronde theme park (owned by Six Flags) in Canada.

Lol. The Tom's Twister was an old Chance Rotor ride. It was located where the play structure is in Bugs Bunny National Park. The old building (which was a tube shaped building about twenty feet tall) is long gone, which is a shame, the Rotor is one of my favorite flat rides, only a small handful left in the world. Unfortunately all the ones at Six Flags parks were removed after an incident at Six Flags Great America on the Rotor called Cajun Cliffhanger where the floor crushed a girl's toe when the floor was rising at the end of the ride.

Think they closed Toms Twister in 2005. Has caused some distress with me because I couldn’t find it for several years afterward and didn’t have the sense to ask about it, only to see on the internet it was gone. Legend has it, some morbidly obese lady boarded and accrued a foot or ankle injury and sued the park so they pulled it. But I think that may just be talk.
They also recently removed the “6 foot tall maneating chicken” from the park.

we were just at six flags yesterday and I pointed out those barrels sitting by the train. So, we talked about that and tom twister. I do not remember them being called the drunken barrels, but I can't remember. I wish they would have never changed Indian Joes' CAve.

Wow, "Injun" Joe's Cave ride.....blast from the past!!! I loved that ride and remember it well. I believe it became the Time Tunnel and then later Scooby Doo and of course now is Justice League. I agree that I wish the old "Injun" Joe's Cave was still around there somewhere. Thanks for watching!

      @bhumanecate 7 лет назад +1

Yep, that is correct, but I have not been in Justice League yet. Tried once, but the line was too long. It is not a "cave" nor a water ride anymore, which is a big bummer. Funny, growing up I always called it "indian" instead of Injun!

I loved Toms Twister! Do you know why they closed it? Just really old?

Yeah.....it was just it's time to be replaced. I once heard rumors of their insurance premiums skyrocketing because of this ride having basically no safety restraints at all. Who knows though. I was sad to see it go along with the Drunken Barrels. I hope we never lose the Mine Train or the Log Flume. Thanks for watching.
