The expression of happiness on the old gentleman's face when he saw himself on Robin's camera display is one of the most beautiful and spontaneous I have seen in my entire life!
I love your POV videos Robin. You give us the opportunity to see gear in "real life" use. Plus, we get to see the day in the life of Malaysia. Glad you got to enjoy your satay!
Love that you are giving the K-01 a chance. Despite its short comings , the images look great. Many of my images in my portfolio have been shot on the Pentax K-01. Its a sensor made by Sony and its the same sensor as the Pentax K5. Love my K-01.
Nice and interesting..the colors are great...I look forward to more looks of places around your home country and culture.I really want the new Pentx Dslr ...I love big natural view finders.
Robin, you make it hard for a person with Pentax GAS, I always wanted to pick up a K-01. The K-01 is either liked or not, but it is a hidden gem, if you don't expect it to be a flagship camera. Colours are fantastic! I have a KP, Q and a MX-1 I told myself no more. (for now) :) Always great content on your channel. Really enjoy seeing the different food and locations! Thanks for sharing!
The K-01 has so many technical flaws, it is very hard for me to recommend it to anyone, unless you know what you are getting into. Since you do love Pentax, I think having one makes sense - it has the funkiest design of any cameras out there!
Haha, I think I have the same problem. I just picked up a Q7, MX-1, and K-01, and a KP is on my radar if/when the price comes down. And I'm primarily an Olympus shooter!
Try Pentax K5, it has same sensor, but also has faster phase detect AF and viewfinder.. used mine for 10 years almost daily before switching to K3.. but I still have it as backup.
Robin, you are so lucky to live in such a fascinating country, the colours and atmosphere are a delight to see. Street photography in the UK used to be great, not so much now, where people challenge you and ask what you are doing, and why. Unless you are using a mobile phone. The sight of a real camera seems to make people nervous here, yet where you live people are much more relaxed about the sight of real cameras. Great video Robin, really enjoyed watching and the food looks amazing, many thanks.
If only Ricoh would bring out another MX-1 but with the GRIIIx's hardware and fixed 40mm equiv lens. I still use mine along with my different Q's, but I'm not a fan of the telescoping zoom lens personally. Having a new MX-1 with the sensor/image processer/lens combo the iiix finally brought would really cut into Fuji's X100 series sales, especially since you can't find any to buy without overpaying for used ones. My dream is fitting the KP's sensor, processor, etc in a MX-1 style body and a fixed 31mm f/1.8 to reuse existing glass. That'll have even less chance of just reusing existing GR hardware, though, :(.
The wildest colors I've ever been able to achieve from a K-01 or any other Pentax for that matter, came about by shooting in HDR and in random cross processing for the picture mode. This will produce random color tones between each bracketed exposure, and the colors will all merge together into something you can't get any other way. I super highly recommend experimenting with picture and shooting modes in this way, you might be surprised at what can be achieved!
Pentax has always had great colors. They were my first digital SLRs back in the '00s & '10s! At the time I chose them for the colors, old lens compatibility, and *IBIS*. Unfortunately their autofocus was not great and I ended up switching to Olympus.
As an IstD* owner, yep, even the early Pentax DSLR's had fantastic colours - I can still take shots from that and load them straight in to social media and folk think they were resized down for posting :D
I used to use Pentax but their lenses became too big and heavy so switched to Olympus. I recently reprocessed some K-7 and k-3 images and it reminded me of their wonderful colours, interestingly the k-7 was marginally better than the k-3. I remember the debate at the time because the k-7 was a ccd sensor whilst the k-3 was CMOS and the colours were criticised.
Well you probably know that back in the film age Pentax was one of the big brands, and old camera company with many first inventions in photography and much experience. They still prioritise the photographer’s experience and still do things their own way so not surprising that shows through. 16mp sensor (from Sony) was also one of the best in that period less than 10 yr ago
@@rafaelquiroz5865 I hope Pentax survives too not only for the history but because they offer some different things that are photographer centric, the ergonomics are great and they are now the only camera company making DSLRs. I have Fuji cameras and Olympus which are all good but the optical viewfinder and the way my two Pentax DSLRs sit in the hand is still the nicest.
As much as I love my Olympus e10 and m1 II I have a Pentax K70 and it's a great camera. Don't know why Pentax has fallen from grace. I use it for landscape and macro. Does an excellent job.
:) always amusing when someone figures out how good a camera the K-01 is. It's internals are fantastic, and at the price when launched it was a bargain. Used my pair for ages doing HD TV, music video, short films etc etc, and yeah, it's a shame Pentax doesn't care enough about video to bring the full might of that Colour Science to Video and Cine production. The ergonomics on the K-01 do suck though, it just doesn't stay in the hand the way a K-5 or K-3 will. Try one with some classic lenses, K/KM/KA series from the 70's and 80's, you'll be in for a surprise on how good they pair together.
Since you both operate out of the same city, would you by chance know another local RUclipsr there, Andrew from the beyond photography show? It would be a pretty neat episode if one day the two of you could do a collaboration episode together, perhaps with each of you giving hints on how each of you handle different lighting situations and things. With all of the knowledge both of you have, that would certainly be an episode I would tune in to see!🙂. It is often interesting to see how two different photographers approach taking the photos in the same lighting conditions, with one not necessarily being more correct than the other, but to see why they like their particular approach based on their own experience. Just an idea, and I would certainly watch if some day it could be done!📸👍
Yes, the K-01 shares the same 16 Mp sensor as the K-5, K5 II and K-5 IIs series of cameras. They all have great rendering. I will never sell my K-5 II even though I shoot Olympus mainly.
Pentax, at least when it came to DSLRs, I think was ahead of its time, with IBIS found in some of their cameras (like the K50) when people weren't really doing IBIS or where "cheating" using things like pixel manipulation to ensure sharp shots. Too bad Pentax never really got onboard with the ML crowd (they had one, I believe being the K-01).
IBIS is in most of the DSLR's and in the K-01, but for most, it was for Stills Only, with a horrid vector based "MovieSR" for video that is best left disabled. The K-5's had IBIS in video, then it was disabled, and it's back with the K-3 mk3. Yup, Pentax had a Seven Year Lead on video stabilization that they effectively gave away, Panasonic and Sony didn't catch up for ages, and it was close to ten years for Canon to catch up on that one.
Maybe pick-up a Pentax KP or K70 they have articulating screens and pixelshift for better noise and color depth, might be an interesting video comparing to the Olympus hi res mode
After selling my K-S2 Im considering the K-01 as a light sub machine over the K-5, any insights? Also, first time I see this channel and I promise this guy looks like the guy I would like to hang with very often. Thank you for the nice video 👌🏽
Hello Robin! I have the camera so I am just piqued... I bought it from Japan eBay (used) but looked brand new when I got it... I enjoyed using it but because of the weight I hardly used it but lately I feel like using it again so I was looking for videos of it.... BTW can I use my android phone via mini HDMI cable as as external monitor? As I like to shoot looking down... (tilted screen)...
That was a very interesting and entertaining video presentation Robin. How were you able to take clear photos with shutter speeds of 1/20 and 1/30 without using a tripod?
The K-01 has the same sensor as the K-5 but came out with a newer PRIME M image processor so the colour science may be a little different (I do have a K-01 but never had a K-5) but possibly Roger was using it with the default ‘Bright’ setting which is weighted towards more vibrant colour output in JPEGs.
It seems to me that you apply the same preset with sharpness, saturation and warm white balance to all images from different cameras. Alas, because of this, the individuality of the images taken from a particular camera is lost.
You have a lot of interesting reviews, but the processing approach is really the same. For example, in the review on the Pentax K-01, the picture is easily confused with the Panasonic LX 10. Although in fact, the cameras and their attitude to color are as different as the sky and the earth.
You are the only person that said the images look the same. I saw so much difference between Pentax and Panasonic colors. If I were to review the cameras, don't you think the processing approach should be consistent? If I change my processing for different cameras, does that not invalidate my claims to colors? Again, same minimal processing, and I leave the camera unique colors as they are. I can clearly see Canon colors being different from Nikon. Olympus being different from Panasonic. If you can't tell from my photos shown here... Something must be wrong with your screen.
I don't believe there are bad brands. Pentax made some bad decisions, yes, but Pentax is a respectable brand and they have contributed a lot to the camera making world.

Pentax was ahead of time with that k01. I guess we can say Pentax tried mirrorless. The body was also designed by a famous artist
Thank you Robin for your excellent content and for always proving it's not the camera

Is it true that you can simply attach vintage Pentax lens in the newer Pentax Camera? Is it same PK mount?
I have no idea, Irwandi, I don't have the older lenses and I don't intend to get any.
Yes PK lenses work with all PK mount cameras, you just have to enable manual f stop ring in menu and set focal length.
