GBU-39 Small Diameter Bomb (SDB) Explained

- The GBU-39 Small Diameter Bomb (SDB) is a 250 lb (110 kg) precision-guided glide bomb that is intended to provide aircraft with the ability to carry a higher number of more accurate bombs. Most US Air Force aircraft will be able to carry (using the BRU-61/A rack) a pack of four SDBs in place of a single 2,000 lb (907 kg) bomb. The SDB relies on the Global Positioning System to provide navigation to the target. Furthermore, the small size of the bomb allows a single strike aircraft to carry more of the munitions than is possible using currently available bomb units.

No matter how much sdb it is. It still killed 45 civilian on strike.
They look incredible and for bombs ..great video too...Thank you for your videos too..
Windows XP, now that is state of the art.
More likely Windows Embedded or Embedded CE - when you build the OS image you customise what you leave in and out, like all the consumer stuff and unneccessary services, so it's not quite as goofy as the idea of XP on weapon diagnostic tools.
Loaders wearing shorts in the heat. Nice. When I was a Weapons Weenie we could not wear shorts. Just the 100% poly O.D. fatigues. Also my knees are beat from the thousands of BDU 33's I loaded. Wear your knee pads Boys. You ain't gonna remain young and beautiful forever.
One that was pointed out
To me as a kid. American's
Make a weapon first thing
The manufacturer does is boast about it
Very nice ❤
How fast do these travel? (I googled around, and nowhere provides this information).
At the speed of terminal velocity. They are gravity bombs.
2:30 Roll Tide!
Haha didnt notice! RTR
looks like gunshells
So is this just a very small JDAM?
Yep, pretty much.
GLSDB!
So beautiful ❤
All being careful....until
1:08 lemme just shove them together.
What weapons F-35 can keep inside, amraam and ?
Kai Karlsson depends on the configuration. With these I believe 8 gbu53 the small diameter bomb 2, and 2 air to air missiles
It's kinda funny how much the US tries to mitigate collateral damage yet people still cry.
ikr, pretty much the only country that would pour that amount of resources, funds, manpower to achieve such thing
If I Rob a bank and only killed those who don't follow my orders, would that still be a crime? 🤔
@@fitrianhidayat ofc, it still has nothing to do with this tho, bad analogy
Funny the US can tell their people pretty much everything yet there's always a dumbass believing it
@@Jaecht88 joke on you im not American
Using the F22 to carry Air to Ground munitions is a waste. Lets save those flight hours for Air to Air training and combat.
If an f22 is in Syria doing air-air mission but can also carry a few SDB and support ground troops it sounds like a win win to me
+Kel Hip Sure, why not? The F-22 is in the area anyway for various reasons, including CAP, some SIGINT, looking out for pop-up SAM threats, and general situational awareness, so it might as well carry some air-to-ground ordnance to support ground troops or take out SAM sites should those situations arise. They could call in F-15Es or other assets, but time could be critical, and for SAM sites the F-22 would be the better option anyway. Each F-22 could carry, for example, 4 GBU-39s (SDBs) or a single GBU-32 (1000-lb JDAM) in place of 2 of its AIM-120s, leaving 4 AIM-120s + 2 AIM-9s for air-to-air, which makes for a light but useful multirole/swing-role loadout.
Another reason to do at least a little air-to-ground with the F-22 is of course to test its air-to-ground capabilities in a realistic combat scenario. In a potential future war against a major power, the F-22 may well be tasked with SEAD/DEAD and other offensive counter air missions in the early stages, not just air-to-air, so we need the pilots and their aircraft to have that sort of proficiency. Naturally the F-35 is envisioned for those tasks, but I think when they see how bad things can get with dense, overlapping SAM networks and fast interceptors such as MiG-31s streaking in when warned by long-wave radar, they may decide that the F-22's superior all-aspect stealth (it's not stealthier at the frontal aspect than the F-35, but it is from most other aspects) and kinematics (including Mach 1.7 supercruise) will give it a better chance to survive and get the job done. I mean, it can drop bombs at double the speed and altitude of other strike fighters.
I wouldn't worry about F-22s doing too much of the bombing in Syria, though. They're only flying a very tiny percentage of the air-to-ground sorties, leaving the bulk of the work to older fighters. They're just staying limber and maintaining fitness, so to speak, for really bad potential future scenarios, and are not getting worn out by any reasonable measure. They're not carrying external ordnance on their wings, either, although if necessary they could. An F-22 could (with the appropriate racks and sacrificing stealth) carry 8 GBU-31s (2000-lb JDAMs) plus a full load of 8 air-to-air missiles all at once, no problem. Even an F-15E Strike Eagle couldn't do that. :)

Dropping them things on everybody aren't you proud boys! Turn about is fair play. You will get yours too.
Shut up.

You are not in service of our country , you are in service of Corporations that own the country. There is nothing that you are doing and to defend the homeland
you're welcome
Translation: stealth jets can’t carry much so we give them firecrackers.
hoofed Stealth fighters, like the F-22 and F-35, can carry similar loads as legacy fighters; in the case of the F-35, more.
the f35 can load under its wing the weight of an unloaded f16 in bombs... all this while still retaining a smaller cross section than any 4th gen fighter.
Silly Hoofed
+Locutus494 Physically, at least, the F-22 can carry about as much. If it were to be programmed to deliver heavy munitions carried externally on its wings, then it has four hardpoints with standard military buses for intelligent weapons and a capacity of 5,000 lbs each. Based on its maximum takeoff weight, its maximum capacity for ordnance (internal and external) is about 22,000 lbs. They're more comparable to the F-15E in this regard than other legacy fighters.
+hoofed SDBs are meant to be carried by non-stealth fighters, as well. They're enough to take out many targets, have very good bunker-penetration capabilities despite their light weight, and are intended to keep collateral damage to a minimum (500-lb bombs are overkill for many types of target, especially as precision improves).
As for the ability of stealth fighters to carry ordnance, as already pointed out they can carry more than most legacy fighters when carrying externally as well as internally. Of course they have to sacrifice stealth for this, and in stealth mode their payload is far more limited. However, is it really that bad? For comparison, once the F-16 is loaded with everything it needs for most missions, typically it only has two hardpoints left for ordnance, which is pretty much what a stealth fighter has internally. Sure, larger legacy fighters can carry more, but this is still a useful load, and they don't have the option of a stealth mode.
