I am 60 now and had a 23 year long career as a competing powerlifter starting at age 29. I peaked at 40 setting PB in all events, ending at age 52 performing at 90% of my PB level.
My problem is I was a powerlifter at 16. And a pretty good one too. I stopped at 18 due to injuries. Started training again at 34 but all I seem to do is chase what I could do at 18. I hate myself for it, but I keep doing it over and over. I've done nothing during lock down and I plan to train a little bit smarter and not worry about what I used to do. We'll see how that pans out
Hey Loz! I’m 57 and I started implementing strongman lifts in my regimen!! Farmers walk bars, 150lb sandbag, axle bar, 90.5” deadlift bar!! I absolutely love doing the lifts. I don’t rush it with the poundages. I just have fun with it!! I intend on doing strongman exercises for the long haul!!
I've been training for 3 years now, I'm currently 52 yrs old. I absolutely love it. It's amazing to see how much potential we all have inside of us IF we do the work. I'm in competition with myself to be better than yesterday. Be safe and lift on!!!!!!
another good chunk of advice from uncle loz. i have been training a good friend of mine for just over a year now. hes 35 and didnt ever really give it a go till this past year. The progress hes made has been basically a whole year of steady noob gains. Its like his body was begging to be trained and now its not wasting any time tossing on strength.
I love this advice. I’m 39. Started doing Bootcamp/HIIT stuff at a local gym after years of inactivity. Just started powerlifting training at a local gym that also has Strongman implements, which I am excited to eventually learn. I just wanna be the best athlete I can personally be!
Thanks for putting this out man... im 39 and a very accomplished powerlifter about to do my first novice strongman meet.. i just hope to do well and keep up!
great advice Loz. Fewer excuses for people these days to get started. I started in 1999 and there was no internet, no local or even regional gyms doing anything strongman, no equipment available to buy. It was a pretty lonely place, and very misunderstood. I finished after a couple of years very disheartened with a string of injuries. I would have killed to have all the info [and equipment] available we sometimes take for granted today ! I started again a few years later, I was now 39, and enjoyed a few good years of training and things had improved.....so much info on the internet, bought some equipment and found a gym that did some events as well. Good times, but it came a bit late for me. I finished 4 years ago, not achieving as much as I wanted, but it was great and I will never regret all the effort even if my achievements were very low to most people. would love to start again knowing what I know now. thanks for all your great videos Loz !

He's since moved on to Strongman, and it's been fun to see his progress. Well, he's gone off on his 4th deployment and I promised him that when he comes back safe, I'll do a strongman contest with him. Thanks for posting this Loz... your videos always seem to come out at just the right time when we need them the most.
I feel like strength sports are more forgiving to age provided as long as you take care of injuries/tendons/joints, is that not true? Because many strength athletes continue to get stronger into their 40s and even 50s, with their strongest being later in their 40s despite a persons physical "peak" being in their mid 20s. I'm fairly sure this is the case. I'm a younger guy, 23. But they call it "old man strength" for a reason.
Starting as a baby is definitely an advantage by the time you're 35 you will have made alot more gains. If they work hard. I’m 45 and fired up!!! Three years ago my workout program was slowing down while driving past the gym. Today I have abs for the first time since the 80s. I have a bench, 100lbs greater than anytime in my youth. Best of all, I’ve been able to wrestle back a young man’s diet from the unrelenting medical field. Thanks for the encouragement Loz!!!
I fell into this after getting hit in the head by something I couldn’t pick up at work. 6 months later I added 200 lbs to my deadlift after never touching a weight. I basically got into this because I didn’t want to get hurt at work again
A few months ago I'd say my goal was to be even a little bit like guys like Thor and Eddie. Then recently I saw a vid of an Australian guy, masters 2 class, had to be over 60 maybe even 70, pulling 305kg, and I reevaluated what I believe true strength and Power to be. Do you wanna look like young Ronnie Coleman now, and look like current Ronnie in the future? Or do you wanna take your time, program safely, and still be able to pull numbers when most other people your age use walkers?

Awesome video Loz, and to be honest the answer is what I expected :D I'm 27 now and I started going to the gym (consistently) about half a year ago. During the time of lockdown I did home workouts with some resistance bands, dumbells and some bodyweight exercises. I'm from Austria, and from what I could find, there's only one gym in Austria with strongman equipment, and it's in Vienna. Vienna is about 4 hours of driving away from my home, so obviously I can't go there for my regular (monday-friday) workouts. I still want to do some Strongman-style training though because I think events like the Yoke (with humane amounts of weight) would actually be great full body exercises, and because I want to get at least a little taste of what it feels like to use that type of equipment. Any suggestions?
@@BigLozOfficial Thanks! I'll ask him for places to train. One event that wouldn't be hard to replicate is the truck pull. But of course, if I wanna pull a big truck one day, I should probably start by pulling a small car first. But I have no idea at what point I would be strong enough to do it without hurting myself. Do you think a deadlift PR of around 150kg is enough to pull a ~1100kg car?
Hey Tom, i am from Austria too, facing the same problem; i am 59 and found my way into strongman 2 3/4 years ago. (Back in 1992 i was a national B.B. heavyweight champ) Here is my strongman gym solution: first i made a deadlift platform, bought a squat rack, 3 different barbells + some weights and a rack, an adjustable bench, an old pulldown machine, some dumbbels, made a rack for them from scrap metal, Hyperextension rack, abdominal machine, a metal log, crash mats and finally a big new legpress. for outdoors: old tractor tyres, a new farmers walk set, and recently i bought atlas stones from Wales @ Spartan Atlas stones, 50kg up to 130kg for truck pull i use my own 3,7 t tractor ;-) its not that expensive, if you plan on working out longer than a year or two.... if you are interested to get your own "stuff", i could PM you where i got mine. cheers Franz
@@franz61xxl13 Hey Franz, thanks for the insight! I have a gym nearby but it's probably the world's smallest gym. Nevertheless, it has all the essentials so I can bench press, deadlift, squat, leg press etc. there, that is no problem. But there is not much beyond that. It just so happens that my dad is a mechanic and welder, so maybe could make a DIY yoke for me from some metal scraps. And I could pull my mum's Suzuki Swift for the time being until I get stronger, and one day I'll be able to pull a truck as well. But I would still be interested in more strongman equipment, too.
@@TomHenksYT O.K. gotcha, i bought my stronman gear from: www.megafitness.shop/ you could copy strongman equipment or buy it, payment is save, delivery is great, you find it all there except Atlas stones which i bought in Wales GB, @ spartan atlas stones, via facebook: Jason Jones, his first delivery to Austria, cheers mate ;-) p.s. i got the worlds smallest gym LOL ;-)
When would you recommend getting a coach? Like is there any point when your not close in strength and body weight? Or is it just when you hit a plateau?
I'm 20 year old novice powerlifter and I want to get into strongman, my. SBD is (150kg, 90kg, 180kg) should I get my powerlifts at a good point and then switch to strongman events, or should I include them in my training right now.
It’s good to build that base but it’s never to early to train some of the events for fun and conditioning. Keep it lighter and focus on speed and technique

Hey Tom, i am from Austria too, facing the same problem; i am 59 and found my way into strongman 2 3/4 years ago. (Back in 1992 i was a national B.B. heavyweight champ)
Here is my strongman gym solution:
first i made a deadlift platform, bought a squat rack, 3 different barbells + some weights and a rack, an adjustable bench, an old pulldown machine, some dumbbels, made a rack for them from scrap metal, Hyperextension rack, abdominal machine, a metal log, crash mats and finally a big new legpress.
for outdoors: old tractor tyres, a new farmers walk set, and recently i bought atlas stones from Wales @ Spartan Atlas stones, 50kg up to 130kg
for truck pull i use my own 3,7 t tractor ;-)
its not that expensive, if you plan on working out longer than a year or two....
if you are interested to get your own "stuff", i could PM you where i got mine. cheers Franz
@@TomHenksYT O.K. gotcha, i bought my stronman gear from: www.megafitness.shop/
you could copy strongman equipment
or buy it, payment is save, delivery is great, you find it all there except Atlas stones which i bought in Wales GB, @ spartan atlas stones, via facebook: Jason Jones, his first delivery to Austria, cheers mate ;-)
p.s. i got the worlds smallest gym LOL ;-)
best age to start is when you’re old enough to lift
YEP and you are never to old to lift ;-) ;-)
How can there be dislikes.... Horrible people out there
When would you recommend getting a coach? Like is there any point when your not close in strength and body weight? Or is it just when you hit a plateau?
I deadlifted 1000kg out the womb Loz. Speak for yourself mate🤷🏽♂️
Keep it lighter and focus on speed and technique
thank you so much sir!
hahahaha you tell those 15 year olds!!
One day I will be world champion. Black panther White grizly is coming. I promise.
immer like 👍 👍
An older guy, 35 years old...
You didn't have to get personal mate :*(
Haha
Big Loz i am big fan of your videos. My question is What age is strongest age for a human??
We generally stop gaining muscle mass at age 30 or so. This can, however, be overcome with rigorous training.
That is complete arbitrary bullshit.
It depends on your training experience. But yeah if you trained hard amd well when you were young, chances are you will peak around 28- 33
@@Sealed_Chamber It has been studied extensively.
@@Nolanthegardener There are too many individual differences to make a blanket statement like that though.
@@Sealed_Chamber Check out "How to Build Muscle, According to Science" on the RUclips channel Seeker. The presenter is a bit insufferable, but the facts are good.
