I have all zebrina, nanouk & Fluminensis. But i think my zebrina & nanouk thrives even more than my fluminensis. I plant all of 'em in pafcal & in self watering planter. I'm thinking the Fluminensis prefers organic soil with less humidity..i dunno
I bought three little ones a month ago and they grew fast! I went to the store today for more and they had sold out! Thanks to your video I am gonna try to propagate them!! You made it look so easy!
I successfully propagated my first one! It’s been more than a week and the cuttings have already grown and rooted. I followed what you describe in the video exactly, thanks again!
A friend of mine gave me a small cutting and I planted it outdoors almost two years ago. Since then I have replanted cuttings everywhere and have them in pots all around my yard. I have even given some to friends. Love that plant!!! Thanks for talking about them!!!
@@rosettagrows3315 It is the purple one..forget what the correct name is for that. I will send you a picture of it/them. Yes, my plants are flourishing, but soon triple digits will arrive and I hope I can help them survive the heat!!
I love growing Tradescantia! Their so easy and fun to grow. About 1 year ago I started really getting into the plant genius and have now collected 5 varieties. I found the key to growing happy Tradescantia is to give them bright, indirect light. Also, I recommend that you let them dry out between waterings. However, don't let them get too dry otherwise their leaves will get crispy. Also, I think the variegated tradescantia that you suspect to be a tri-color is actually just a variegated tradescantia. The variegation on variegated tradescantias leaves is very unstable which causes it to sometimes mutate. I have a variegated tradescantia that has some bi-colored foliage and some pure albino foliage. I think it would still be worth a shot to see if you can get the stem to produce more tri-colored foliage. In addition, I too, find it fun to put tradescantia in higher light. I have a tradescantia sillamontana in my south-facing window and it receives 8-9 hours of full sun. I've found that backing off on the watering and putting it in a well-draining mix has caused it to turn purple with distress and form fuzzier leaves.
I believe that I have the solid purple my daughter was walking home and brought a piece she picked up from a neighbor cutting theirs lol! They grow outside and grow so crazy fast.
I started putting my wandering Jew outside in pots and they grew well. I live in zone 9. I propagated them and put them in coco lined pots hanging from tree stems. No water propagation necessary.
I bought a tradescantia nanouk last spring - it was love at first sight because of these vibrant colours. I have it outside in the summer (in morning sun, and during midday hours in filtered sunlight). During this time it grows much faster and gets even brighter colours. I love to propagate it because I have many friends who are crazy for plants just like me.
I really love this plant l live in Islamabad and have many of tradescantia plants and I'm surprised to see them flowering Very beautiful collection you have
I bought a Tradescantia Andersonian on a whim when in the garden store in May. It was about a foot tall. I planted it in a 12" pot and put a 2' high piece of fencing around it. I live in the high desert of Oregon and our winters are very cold, think Zone 2, and summers in 90's with some over 100 degree days not uncommon. I planted it in direct sun on the patio outside my greenhouse. Nights are beginning to dip into the 30's and it still seems healthy. It completely filled the pot, straight up, and is about 3' tall with lovely pale lavender/white petals which bloom during the day and close up at night. It's a fascinating plant but I know I will need to bring it in soon as it's too cold for it to live this winter. I thought about trying to plant it in the ground near the South side of the house and mulch it in for the winter to see if it would come back in the Spring. I'm going to take some cuttings and start them for inside. I expected to see it drop through the fencing and tend toward a hanging type of plant. Not so. Have you had any experience with them growing straight up as opposed to trailing? Laurie, La Pine, OR
I haven't grown it straight up! I'd love to see what you have done. If you have a bright spot indoors, it should be happy through the winter. I feel for you on your climate. That is rough temps to be able to accommodate with plants!
I have zubrina outside in northern michigan. It's been frosting over for 2 weeks now and snowing for 4 days now it's still alive... for real. I have a dense covering of leaves and snow on the soil and I have the tinsiest spark of hope that it will come back next year. I pruned it but still left a lot there so hopefully it will go dormant with less leaves, instead of thinking to keep growing. If I can force this plant to significantly slow or even go dormant, there's a slim chance it might survive...
I love tradescantia. I got a tradescantia zebrina, tradescantia pallida, tradescantia pallida pale pluma and some other varieties I can't remember. Very underrated plant.
I have a couple of Tradescantia spathacea plants, commonly called as oyester plant or cradle lily both in low light and also in bright indirect light. Both locations seem to be ideal for them, I have a few cuttings of them immersed in water as well, and they are absolutely stunning. I also have other varieties of Tradescantia like the Tradescantia pallida or the purple heart plant, it does well in bright indirect light. Some of my Tradescantia plants like the Tradescanta zebrina and the Tradescantia fluminensis variegata are yet to be planted, they're still rooting in water.
Love these guys - I've got 4 different types; Zebrina, Purple Heart, Nanouk, and whatever the green and white striped one is (?). As you said, all are super easy to propagate, very fast growers, and they can be brittle. Mine are primarily indoor, and the Purple Heart blooms almost constantly. They're a great plant for people just getting into the house plant hobby.
Hi Rosetta, it’s nice to know I share the same name as you do. I’m Rosette. I love the Tradescantia. I have the sillamontana and the zebrina. I just love these plants, so easy to grow and propagate.
If you have five different types of these plants, can you stick them all in the same pot and they would be fine and also I live in New Hampshire where the weather in the winter time gets really cold so they have to come inside. Do they do well under full spectrum, LED lightbulbs.
Great video, Rosetta! My question is: I have a new Zebrina that has 3 arms about 8” long and a couple of new offshoots starting. On the longer arms, each set of leaves is about 4” apart. I realize if I pinch the ends off it will get bushier, but will it continue to trail? I’d like it to be both bushy and long. Am I asking for too much?? 😄
I have purple wandering Jew in Globe AZ. I like your video and I just want to know what temperature is best for them? I got some flowers indoors (top the refrigerator and more light.). The winter time have some snow 25~45F (our elevation is 3544feet.) Thanks!
I think tradescantias are my favourites. They are so easy to grow and propagate! I'm in love with my fluminensis tricolor right now. I bought 5 stems on internet, simply put them in the soil and it just grows in front of my eyes! 😍😍I have also a zebrina that I already propagated into 4 different pots. And my cousin is growing for me green fluminensis and that all purple one with longer leaves. Can't wait to get my hands on them 🤣🤣 thank you for an interesting video
Love your video! Thank you for making a point to not refer to the plant by its potentially offensive name. I am quite surprised that most gardening tutorial channels and care guides still use that and was looking for a tutorial that would acknowledge that it may not be appropriate to use that term. Thank you. I shared your content with some friends for this very reason as I refuse to use that terminology and just call them zebrinas (that's the variety I have). :)
I used to have a variegated Tradescantia plant {Wondering Jew} About 40 years ago and since then I tried about 2 times and they die. This past week my sister and I wanted to get a and just drive. During that time we found a ROSE's store with lots of plants. My sister saw the purple wondering Jew AND THEN I SAW A VARIEGATED PLANT she it was a wondering Jew, I said I'd never seen one like that before so we found a good one and I saw a green SPIDER PLANT.I had been wanting one of those fore a long time. I now have one of each in my apt. They are getting the morning through afternoon sun BUT they are on a low shelf. These plants I bought were outside but are now indoors. The variegated Tradescantia plant had some dead leaves and I got rid of those and they DO break off so easy and I put them on a small. glass of water. When I say variegated it has green leaves with strikes and some were solid white or solid green. Is that normal? where should I put these plants? I also have snake plant. In the year of 2000 or 2001 I had a landlady give me the Mother-Law plant. Out of that plant I gave away 4 or 5 plants from the original. I have another plant I've had it before but for the life of me I can't remember the name. BUT back to the ones above I could use some advise. I don't want to lose them, Sorry for being so long winded. Thank you
@@rosettagrows3315 I am using cactus mix which would be what you are using more or less. I had the "wandering J**" but it growed so quickly, it is really invasive and gave it to my daughter :-) Thanks
So jealous! I got cuttings for a t. pallida from a friend that I'm growing indoors. It lost its hue and is struggling through minimal sun. A grow light is on the way. It still has crunchy ends and the leaves are droopy. 😩
HELLO, I APPRECIATE YOUR CHANNEL. I HAVE THE NANOUK AS A BABY AND THE ONE CALLED WJ, FULL GROWN. THEY ARE INSIDE PLANTS. I LEAVE THEWJ OUT UNTIL WINTER SETS IN. I AM IN MARYLAND AND I DONT KNOW WHAT ZONE I AM IN.
Beavers 2015-2016 that makes sense. They can be prone to rotting on top. I do top water mine but occasionally have to pull out a few sting strands. I don’t mind. As someone mentioned, you can try bottom watering. Many people prefer this method, it just takes longer.
Hello from the Pacific Northwest. I grow Zebrina, Nonouk, and Bridal Veil indoors. Am trying to get the watering down on the bridal veil. 🙂 You may want to mention that these plants are considered very invasive in many areas. If you grow outdoors, plant in containers and be careful. Oh, never mind....you did just say just that. Sorry.....We really need to protect our natives. Have a great week.
How do you water your very bushy Tradescantia? Mine is so full at the top I feel it's hard to water from the top without wetting the foliage, which I imagine isn't ideal. Thanks!
Hey I would like to send you a cutting of my Tradiscanta .didn't check the date of the video sorry. Hope its still cool, my dad grew many when I was a young boy. I learned some and mbe you might be interested in the one I have. Around 15 years ago I took my family to London zoo, they have a hot humid butterfly house. It was all over the place. Asked my 5 year old to grab just one small stem. Its done amazing. Went from dark green to way more purple, mostly underneath but retains dark green tones on top. I just wanted to know if it's 😊or not. Seems fine and as you said so adaptable. Let know if you still keep up to date and you can. One luv, that's Bob marley quote, feel like you may get my respect for you and him.
hey I'm having trouble rooting mine. Well it sprouts roots after I put it in water for a few weeks (started with one cutting that has gradually fallen apart and grown I now have 3) but when I put it into dirt, it takes off for a few weeks then everything under the soil rots off and I have to put them back in water to grow more roots. this has happened 3 times in different pots.
@@rosettagrows3315 probably too long. this last time i left the cuttings for at least a month in the water. some roots rotted off even before i planted them, but that wasnt the case the first few times. they take off as soon as i plant them, then everything underground rots. its a well draining pot with miracle grow soil, i water once every few weeks. i recently checked them and its happened again, but this time i stuck them deeper into the soil so maybe theyll root better that way.
I just got my tradescantia nanouk on 30/6 (about 3 pieces of leaves with root) but unfortunately, 2 of it died with rot root. Now left 1. Wish me luck dear :'(
I have a green/white tradescantia (Variegata?) and for some reason, it doesn't vine downwards like yours. It's been growing horizontally and not straight. It kind of resembles a letter J shape where it'll extend then curve upwards. Is there a way to encourage it to just grow into a vine straight down?
It sounds like it’s growing toward the light..can you move it to a sunnier location? And be sure to turn it every week or so to get even growth all around.
Hey! Sorry for the late response. Are you growing it indoors? As long as your house is staying at a comfortable temperature throughout the day, it should be fine. If you are worried, sure, add some heat!
I have a big planter of tradescantia zebrina and they where thriving till a fee months ago. Now they are yellow and dying! I like in the tropics and i have the outside in direct sun (which they didn't mind for 5 month) but now im so confused!
@@rosettagrows3315 i cant quite tell. They were thriving during march-may. I watered them everyday those months as temperatures was about 40F+ in direct afternoon sun. However, Since june i did reduced watering as soil was still moist compared to previous months and not as hot. I did notice they looked beautiful during the evening recently.... Considering putting them in the shade now. So confused now! 😂 Hoping they dont die.
dp.asks I think your instincts are right. I’ve had to move some of mine into the shade as things have warmed up in the sun has gotten more intense. I think that’s a great idea!
I have T. Sillamontana and T. Blossfeldiana. They do very well for me, but I cannot, cannot grow a zebrina or any other of the dark purple. I'm not a novice. I've been trying for decades. My fuzzy friend and my lilac beauty are quite happy, but give me a zebrina and it will be dead within a week. It's very frustrating to constantly hear how easy they are. I can't be the only person in the world who has problems with them and I wish someone would address what can and does go wrong.
Do they keep rotting? I've been trying to grow some zebrina from a cutting for 6 months or so. It roots in water well but once I put it in soil it takes off, then everything in the ground rots and I have to put what's left in water to save it. this has happened 3 times and the plant is now 3 cuttings but they just rotted off again.
Rosetta Grows: I’m in an apartment so, they’re all inside plants. I have 4 plants: a Purple Fuzzy, a zebrina “deep purple”, a Bolivian Dwarf and a regular zebrina (p.s. I call them WANDERING DUDES instead 😉) So, do you know the species name of the Purple fuzzy? Also...is there a common name for the standard zebrina (the purple, silver and greenish ones) I got the cuttings and started the plants with not much info....I’m a plant person but kinda new to Tradescantia....Thanks! I was told the all purple zebrinas are called DEEP PURPLE
I have only heard them referred to as Purple Fuzzy - capitalized and everything... There are sooo many different tradescantia, but as far as popular houseplants, Tradescantia pallida, fluminensis, and zebrina are the major ones. I am not sure if they are all being lumped in there appropriately or not?
Rosetta Grows Thanks for the reply! I believe I have two variants of the T. zebrina (a deep purple (all purple) and the common zebrina (purple green with the silver)...I’m trying to figure out the species name of the purple fuzzy..I know it is NOT a T. zebrina or a T. pallida (isn’t this a white fuzzy?!?)....and I think the Bolivian Dwarf is called a T. Minima...or something like that?!? Ugh...it’s really hard to find botanical information on them! That’s actually what I am Trying to track down on them all...my Biologist is showing because it KILLS me to not know their proper names...lol (p.s..if you have any questions about the proper pronunciation of Latin, please let me know. You can actually tell a lot about a plant by its species name many times...cuz, Latin!)
Rosetta Grows OMG...PURPLE FUZZY IS PALLIDA!!!! So...I need to figure out WHY they have long/far away in the species name....Thank you very much. I out my email in the above comment..throw me an email and I’ll gladly send some photos! #PlantPals
I was given a tradescantia zeroing as a gift. Unfortunately, the stems started turning brown and dropping off. The soil always feel moist. Have stems to start another, how many stems should I place in the pot?
Im not into labeling plants by variety. I think it creates a sense of superiority and inferiority within my garden. I like to think all the varieties matter and wont be bullied into defining them one against the other.
My mother in law has the green variety all over her yard.. like she has no grass!! It’s is her grass basically.... which is kinda cool but it’s not pretty and she sits on 7 acres and it’s all 7acres that it took over!! That’s why I’m scared to purchase one🤣🤣 what of it takes over my house lol just kidding but they are pretty! Just not as grass
Karli Shaw whoa. That’s crazy! That’s a bit of a lot of Tradescantia for me! 😂 that’s the perfect example of why you have to be careful if you live in a favorable climate. It’ll go crazy!
Rosetta Grows tell me about it! We are in East Texas where is sunny warm and humid 24/7 haha it got that way over about 3/4 years !! Now that’s fast for 7 acres!!! And bad thing is the snakes love it!! But we don’t 😱😱 lol I ask anyone and everyone to come cut some to propagate but it does nothing for my mother in law🤣🤣 poor thing! We tried though!
This plant was given the name Wandering Jew as a reference to the fictional character known as The Wandering Jew. While not a true Biblical story, the tale of the Wandering Jew is based on the truth of Scripture. In truth and reality, the Wandering Jew is all of mankind and every human being without Yeshua HaMashiach as their Lord and Savior. If that is offensive to you, sobeit. I will continue to call this plant wandering Jew as a reminder of who and what Jesus has done for me. God bless.
How is Wandering Jew Offensive? That's what it's always been called. Stop cowering to every whim. There will be no words left to speak by the time the woke police are done lol.

@@rosettagrows3315 I am using cactus mix which would be what you are using more or less. I had the "wandering J**" but it growed so quickly, it is really invasive and gave it to my daughter :-) Thanks
meulen yes! Those things can really take off!
You say that they need bright light does that mean that they can be directly under a grow light?
If the leaves dry and fall can they grow again? Or that branch is going to be "bald" forever? Thanks for the awesome video!
Thanks
even though looking at pictures of it makes me feel itchy (lol) i ordered some bridal veil cuttings online. looking forward to seeing them grow
fun!! I love some good plant mail. Let me know how they do!
So jealous! I got cuttings for a t. pallida from a friend that I'm growing indoors. It lost its hue and is struggling through minimal sun. A grow light is on the way. It still has crunchy ends and the leaves are droopy. 😩
thank u for a detailed vid! do u top water or bottom water your tradescantias? :)
I have small white flowers on my trade scantia, what do l do when the flowers die. My plant is inside.
How do they do outside? You can find your growing zone here: planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/PHZMWeb/
Can you plant the wandering Jew in the ground?
I live in Texas and we plant the "Purple Jew" in the garden. I am in zone 8b and it does well here.
Thank you for the tip.
Thanks for sharing your brilliant tips!🌹💕👌happy gardening!
So nice of you. Thank you!
I just got mine recently and i read that you shouldn’t water the crown. So how should i water it? I really don’t want to kill my plant 😊
Put the pot in a bowl or pot of water let it soak up what it needs
Angela Marie thank you so much for replying! Will definitely try that!
Thanks!
Too any of my tradescantia plants get crunchy leaves. Why?
I don't think you mentioned when/how to feed them. I just got some cuttings and they're in coco coir and perlite. When should I give them nutrients?
Love the purple. I don't have one of these...yet!
Come get some of mine!!!
I've been searching for an answer to this question everywhere, please help; can you grow this outside in the UK? 🙏
hey I'm having trouble rooting mine. Well it sprouts roots after I put it in water for a few weeks (started with one cutting that has gradually fallen apart and grown I now have 3) but when I put it into dirt, it takes off for a few weeks then everything under the soil rots off and I have to put them back in water to grow more roots. this has happened 3 times in different pots.
hmm. How long are you allowing the water roots to get? If they get too long (over 2 inches or so) they can have a hard time adjusting to soil life.
@@rosettagrows3315 thanks for the help ive gone through google and youtube with a fine tothed comb and havent found anything
I have two type growing wild in my yard I use it to feed my rabbits with it and two type in my toilet bowl planter
Wandering Jew and purple heart
Where do you live? I assume they aren't taking over?
@@rosettagrows3315 I live in Jamaica sunshine all year around the green one grow wild here and my rabbits love to eat them
I just got my tradescantia nanouk on 30/6 (about 3 pieces of leaves with root) but unfortunately, 2 of it died with rot root. Now left 1. Wish me luck dear :'(
Oh no!! Sending all the good planty vibes your way!! Give it as much light as possible!! Keep me posted.
Why is your nanouk so leggy?
Hey I have a small purple one in a small pig pot, it’s getting cold where I live sould I be worried? Or add a light to keep it warm?
Hey! Sorry for the late response. Are you growing it indoors? As long as your house is staying at a comfortable temperature throughout the day, it should be fine. If you are worried, sure, add some heat!
@@rosettagrows3315 thank but I think the poor thing is dead☹️ it’s all wilted and brownish
Hi i have all purple
I have a big planter of tradescantia zebrina and they where thriving till a fee months ago. Now they are yellow and dying! I like in the tropics and i have the outside in direct sun (which they didn't mind for 5 month) but now im so confused!
That is so strange! Has the temperature changed? Has their watering changed? They are usually so robust!
@@rosettagrows3315 thank you for responding! Means a lot!! Will let you know of they get better! ♥️
That is so strange! Are you growing them indoors? I wonder if it is a light issue?
@@rosettagrows3315 i am growing them indoors, but the first 2 times they rotted off was in a south facing window,
I have nanook
Great Greebo you don’t think it’s a pallida? I’d love to see it!
Great Greebo sillamontana?
Rosetta Grows OMG...PURPLE FUZZY IS PALLIDA!!!! So...I need to figure out WHY they have long/far away in the species name....Thank you very much. I out my email in the above comment..throw me an email and I’ll gladly send some photos! #PlantPals
I am trying to propagate two kinds, a zebrina and chrysophylla. Are you interested in a plant trade?
I’ll bet they propagate so easily!
Rosetta Grows honestly I’m hoping, they were a gift. I can’t get them in my area.☹️
I was given a tradescantia zeroing as a gift. Unfortunately, the stems started turning brown and dropping off. The soil always feel moist. Have stems to start another, how many stems should I place in the pot?
I would start with 5 or so. I try to start all propagations as full as possible to make an ideal plant later.
Do you ever get people saying you look like the actress Jenny Slate?
Outdoor... laughs in Canadian... lol
I’m kidding I’m really just pouting about the lack of plants I can grow outside where I live...lol
Liz Brousseau 😂😂 yes, you Northerners are the true gardening heroes!! I wouldn’t even know where to start!
SAME! Winnipeg has cold winters but these plants thrive come summer!
Im not into labeling plants by variety. I think it creates a sense of superiority and inferiority within my garden. I like to think all the varieties matter and wont be bullied into defining them one against the other.
Sean Henry oh wow.
It’s NOT pronounced ‘trade’ascantia! It is ‘trad’ascantia.
"Wandering Jew" is not offensive.
