you all probably dont give a shit but does any of you know of a way to get back into an Instagram account..? I was stupid forgot the login password. I would appreciate any help you can give me
@Garrett Kairo thanks for your reply. I got to the site through google and im trying it out now. Seems to take a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
I played the opening Fantasia my senior year of college in 1981 as the Recessional after a Sunday service. One of the College administrators said “ It was loud”. And I thought “ I HOPE so!”
That reminds me of the late Virgil Fox, playing at The Filmore East, telling the audience "...if you're not prepared to have a happening, MOVE BACK!" He played a Rodgers touring organ with, he said, 144 speakers.
I play drums, guitar, and some piano. Following two melody lines, near impossible, but three? And they just go on and on. The practice and discipline is commendable. Amazing.
His registrations are the best! He eliminates the mud. Each voice is clear. Great use of this wonderful organ! The best version of this piece on the internet perhaps.
My goodness, this piece sure did stir up the comments. As someone fortunate to have attended the performance let me say it was wonderful. The organ & acoustics complimented Jonathan's orchestral transcriptions as well as both German & French pieces. I was surprised myself that I selected this Bach as my favorite of the evening. On reflection I think the aforementioned acoustics as well as the registrations took it to new heights. Plus I'm quite fond of the chord progressions. Sometimes one just needs to hear the Master, played by a master, on a masterful instrument. Thank you for posting so I can relive the experience.
This is probably my fourth comment! I watched Mass from The National Shrine, Washington DC this evening and this G Minor Fugue was played as the postlude. I immediately felt that I needed to re-visit Jonathan's performance at St Mary's Cathedral - which is absolutely tiny compared to The National Shrine of the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Washington DC. Jonathan's performance (credit to Tom's audio/visual/recording skills) is my all time favourite recording of this majestic work. Of course, none of this would have been possible were it not for the great the organ-builder, himself - the late, Kenneth Tickell, RIP!
By far the best interpretation of this magnificent Fantasia and fugue. Every single theme in fuge was beautifully exposed so everyone could hear it. Chapeau bas!!!
Very good indeed ... but also see Hurford, van Doeselaar and Alain who to me capture the absolute uninhibited essence of this marvellous piece (the Fantasia in particular).
I love this little "symphony". I call it that because it is made of two movements that musically are quite distinct musically. Each, however, displays a thing that Bach was ingenious at making a pipe organ do. In the Fantasia, we get a marvelous display of the chords that can be made from the harmonics of the different ranks of pipes, and the Fugue, of course, demonstrates Bach's amazing skill at weaving of three parts together into a fugue. Also, this piece really shows how the feet can be used to play an intricate part of the fugue. Bach himself claimed that it took him some time to get good at playing the pedals, but by age 20 (!) he got good at it. And sure enough, you can hear the pedal parts get more complicated as he aged.
omG so magnificent, so beautiful. behold. who was it who invented the pipe organ with its resonant pipes controlled from a piano-like keyboard and pedals? what a gifted person indeed.
The only absolute response to the Scott brothers is humble gratitude to God for the providential opportunity to experience such genius wedded to such beauty.
@@Toobula No - its certainly catchy and it is the piece that got me into Bach organ music (and Bach in general) but having listened to the whole lot many times over - some 1300 odd pieces - may favourite free works are BWV 543,548,552,566,572 and favourite chorales too many to list but several in the Orgelbuchlein, Great Eighteen and Clavierubung Dritter Theil.

Jonathan, this is truly one of my favourite performances of the G minor Fantasia & Fugue ever! Thanks, as always, to Tom's brilliant audio/visual skills (and obviously his own musical talent), the sound and design of this relatively new organ by the late Kenneth Tickell can be heard and seen by so many people throughout the world. Will we see another performance from St Mary's Cathedral, Newcastle in the future? (I do hope so!)
What a magical piece Jonathan. I went there with my late father, and best friend, and videoed my friends impro. A marvelous British organ, played my the best organist I know of
Bravo. The fugue is amazing. Probably the best rendition I’ve ever heard. The organ has an amazing tone. Not like so many English cathedral organs. They deserve a prize for building that.
One of my favourite Bach's compositions; most often I like only first interpretation i heard and every next one is "not so good", but this one is so good :D
How wonderful it was to come from a doctor's appointment and listen to this work of art of composer and performer playing on an instrument with which Bach would have been thrilled to hear Jonathan S play! To the Glory of God to Whom Bach dedicated all his compositions.
This is one of the best expositions of this piece Ive heard or found anywhere!! I love it. -- you get the “rhetoric” of the piece and the drama JSB most certainly intended. I have learned and played it but the “edgy” somewhat aggressive even nature of the fantasy you absolutely nailed it! Ii wish more organists would play with “flair” like you - so impressed and kindred spirit musically!
Jonathan's only equal, in my humble opinion, is the Russian organist Daria Burlak. I dream of having these two give us a recital at Manchester's Bridgewater Hall!
Fantastic Jonathan! Now my favorite plating of this piece! Reason: you chose to resolve the coda in the fantasia in G Mol. L. van Doeselaar resolves in G Dur, then goes back into G Mol for the opening statement in the fugue. I don't believe Bach would have written this, although it has been recorded as such in the original literature. But Bach's students were taking dictation as he was loosing his eyesight (me also) at this period in his life. Thanks so much and God Bless, Jonathan!
Wonderful performance and interpretation! The relatively dry acoustics of the space help to keep the crystal clear lines so skillfully delineated by Mr. Scott from being muddied. Magnificent! And keeping the final chord of the Fantasia in the minor, unlike many other performances, felt exactly right. Beautiful instrument as well.
A grand performance and lovely to see the organ in all its glory too Many thanks for adding this to the You Tube mix so people can hear this organs' sounds and see how it fits into the building, Scott brothers. Dear Old Ebeneezer Prout, love the speed. Ken would have been delighted to hear this performance: crisp and clear.
I just love this performance - hence a second comment! I find the sound of this 'new' (2012) organ in relation to BWV 542 quite captivating - and keep coming back to it!
I’m full of admiration for your arrangements of orchestral works (in the Best tradition, one might say), but it was a great pleasure to hear you play one of my favourites from the organ repertoire. And the more so to hear it on one of the late, lamented Ken Tickell’s creations.
Already being quite sure that no rendition of this masterwork is bearable, other than the Herbert Tachezi in Dresden, I stumbled upon you in here... and what a great joy discovering it! Truly genius in all aspects, I say - standing equal to greatest masters! Thank you wholeheartedly for sharing here! Love from Romania!
Brilliant rendition of the Fantasia and Fugue Jonathon, loved it! And on a Northampton built organ as well! Great filming by Tom as usual. Brian Laywood
Thank you, Jonathan and Tom! You're a perfect team. 👍❤️ Both movements played with fine registrations - but the tempo of the Fugue seemed a bit frantic to me; I prefer a more relaxed approach... Mais c'est une question de préférence. A beautiful-sounding instrument with a generous and well-appointed/balanced stoplist. Please do present other works on this grand instrument. I'd love to hear what the Flutes & Célestes, etc. sound like. Merci bien!
Absolutely stupendous performances by Jonathan - one of our greatest organists and musicians (although I'm told that Sir Thomas Beecham could never understand how the two skills could ever be combined!). Clearly, Sir Thomas was very much mistaken. And what a perfect choice of instrument. The Tickell organ has everything in terms of clarity of speech, dynamic range and a superb full organ, which balances all voices with equal impact. The sound of the final few bars, effectively brought home on the pedal bombarde (plus I imagine a coupled en chamade Reed), was enough to blow one's socks off!! Glorious Bach.
This is one of the best fugues, and yes, I just played it cranked up with my desktop computer speaker system. Now to play it through my 75 watt system. When I listen to Bach, so do the neighbors.
unfotunatley many of ken's instruments are being revoiced nowerdays. Its lucky to think this organ has that beautiful sharp edge to it and hasn't yet been revoiced.
