Hi, I’m Japanese and wanted to add one more con about this Shikibuton. Idk where you live, but usually if you’re using this type of bed in Japan, it gets easily moldy on the backside especially laying it on the floor instead of Japanese straw mat. So I’d suggest placing it against a wall or something to dry it to prevent from getting moldy when you’re not using it.

The shikibuton is just like large pillow you lay on. In turkey we use them as well, when guest are staying for the night we give it to them. It is easier to store, as it doesn’t take as much room as mattresses. And the first night sleeping on one feels different but you will definitely wake up and feel that you slept really good!
If we have old close relatives over, for example my grandparents, I let them sleep in my bed. But my aunt or my parents cousins sleep on these things. It was and is common in most places of turkey that they sleep on the big pillows, but with modernisation I believe the Turks thought a mattress is better, since they wanted to be like the west. So the futons(?) became something like a second mattress for those who want to stay at your place. But we lay on them quite often as well
I am a 69-year-old woman who is coming up on one month of floor sleeping. I have begun with just a stack of beach towels on the floor, so my “bed” is only about an inch thick. I am so surprised that I absolutely love it. I have visited the Futon Shop twice now and considered the Shikibuton. However, like you mentioned, I felt that it is both a bit too heavy for me to maneuver every day (and I plan to fold up my mattress and tatami mat each day). So I have decided to purchase the trifold futon and trifold tatami mat. In the twin size, I can easily manage the weight to fold these each day. Although they have both a 3” and a 5” (or thereabouts) futon that is trifold, I have chosen the 3” with the coconut coir. It seems to have the firmness that my current situation is offering me. I am amazed at the improvement I am seeing already with my posture and excellent rest. Additionally, I dream more, have more energy each day, and I figure it is a good thing at my age to need to get down to the floor and up again regularly. I am completely sold on floor-sleeping.
So I gave in and got one, best decision I’ve made recently. Fixed my sleep disturbances, and I don’t sweat anymore. Also my room is now massive, which is awesome.
My foam mattress was killing my back till one day I really had to go to chiro..after a month I've been sleeping on the floor but need some cushion. This video helped me a lot! Thank you.
I grew up sleeping on the floor and now I’ve completely despised beds, floor beds are so cost-efficient and I think for myself, way better than a regular big ol’ bed!
I like the way you think man. Its not often I would see someone who appreciates the product and not the brand. Also great that you have critiqued different brands. Your lax but mindful energy is very cool dude
The one thing holding me back is my $ 4800 bed I bought last year with 35 year warranty. If I was single I would totally go for a futon with tatami mats as I love minimalism and japanese esthetics or perhaps japandi design which is a mixture of japanese and Scandinavian design.
I have a duvet cover over mine to eliminate the corner crunching. I also throw a sheet on top for easy washing, I don't want to always be hoisting the duvet cover off to clean it.
I'm sofa king sick of springs digging into my back. I bought an expensive bed a year ago in hopes it woukd help my back problem and the springs are already digging into me. Switching to futons.
Love being on the floor and actually get some damn good naps when I do! When I went to Japan I slept on futons and fell in love and now I found this link you posted that sells futons which is great for future purchase. Honestly this is a great consideration if you live in a studio or small apartment and space is limited!
First night with Japanese futon directly on the floor and most comfortable sleep since childhood (almost 30 yrs). Back and hip pain got way better and so much more productive today with great ideas. Thank you so much for your videos and research. I got one of your recs, the Fuli Japan brand. Feeling so blessed. Thank you for your help.
Mine got delivered today and I'm excited with the hope that I will eventually wake up and not be in pain. For just one day it would be nice to not have back pain. I'll cry.
4:39 I just ditch the fitted cover just a regular top sheet. You can tuck the excess material and pin in place or retro fit it to lay properly-that’s what I did with a few bands of elastic over the corners. _Some_ effort but not terrible, a worth while project for sheets that fit and retain the beds shape 🤷🏼♀️ Cheers and happy sleeping!!
My son doesn't like beds and prefers to sleep on a mattress on the floor. He has a bed but rarely sleeps on it. I can sleep on both but I love sleeping on my Japanese bamboo mat with a large body pillow for my calves, a flat pillow under the head, small padding under my lower back. Beautiful and sound sleep all the time. If the weather's cold, I'd put a Japanese comforter over the bamboo mat and snooze.
I live in Japan. Futon are cool but they need maintenance. You need to hang them out to the sun to avoid mites and to don’t let it get dump and mold at the side in contact with the floor. Specially if your room is in a first floor and in a humid weather this could happen , maybe this wasn’t an issue when all houses had tatami floors and the floor could “breath “ better. So, these days I see that most people I know living in a one room apartment use it on top of a cheap bed frame. I do the same.
- I've been sleeping on floor ever since I'm a child. Tbh when we moveout from our old apartment and bought a bed, I used it for couple of days and go back to sleeping floor. The floor is my life now.
I'm Turkish, we also have these kind of beds and often only poor people in small villages use them, or when there are guests and you don't have extra beds
Do you know why I am here? I am from Bangladesh but now living in Canada for my mom's PhD. And the mattresses here are all springy and my dad is having back pain. The futon looks similar to the "gadda" in Hindi.
We really need to appreciate the fact that a lot of practices done in 3rd world countries are better. Be it the practice of sleeping on floor or recycling everything. There is still much more West should learn from us
@@adiltambe8018 Yes I agree. Specially local manufacturing. Here everything is industrialized and that's supposed to be"better". I went to japan and slepped on a shikibuton. I thought I'd hate it, but surprisingly I knocked out every night. Fast forward to being home, and a few years later sleeping on my standard bed, my back began killing me. I ditched the bed and bought one myself. I love it. I do hate that you have to air it out weekly and drag it outside and its just more delicate as a whole. Regarding the sheets, I bought s o me that arent as fitted as yours and cover the front and back. It vasically zips over it like a jacket so you dont have the puckering sides!
Very informative and honest. Major drawback to sleeping on the floor for North Americans is all the dust and debris coming through central heating and air conditioning vents. In Japan they use radiators for both heating and air conditioning.
That's what air filters and air purifiers are for not to mention dust is not just in amerikkka and just being outside is worst than any central air system especially if you live in a city.
For over a year I just stopped sleeping on my bed and slept on a yoga mat on my carpet. Worked great for almost two years. Finally accepted that beds weren’t for me and just bought a tatami mat and a futon. Gonna toss my mattress and frame. Only got it because my ex wife had to have one. So to hell with beds and gonna sleep on the floor. Sooo much better life now. Waking up feeling loads better and overall major improvement to my life.
I’ve always enjoyed sleeping on the floor, but it never occurred to me to buy one of those. Next apartment/house/room, that’s gonna be my first purchase
A lot of us Asians use to sleep on floors ofc. with a sleeping cushion or matress. We find it comfortable. It's normal for us to sit on floor when we eat, watch tv etc...
I have no problem sleeping on the floor. Hell, I sleep in my car on the backseat. I slept on the floor previously because I was broke. However, the apartment had these tiny spiders in it. They “sprayed” but I still woke up with spiders on my face. I just don’t want bugs on me from the floor.
Have been sleeping in the floor for the past 3 years and it has been the best sleep change of my life. Highly recommend it! The excellent Japanese products like a tatami mat and a shikifuton and kakefuton will only positively enhance the experience.
I love this. I was always searching for a veeery hard matress and enjoyed sleeping on the floor way more than anything else. This is the perfect solution for me :) Thanks for recommending this!
i have this old futon cushion from a setee frame we used to have, and mid way through this video i got it out and set it up cause i was so excited lol! im gonna try it tonight!
i've slept on a futon most of my life.... lived in japan 10 years.... just upgraded to a bed... gotta say at my age... i got a really hard bed... and i benefit from less joint pain when i stand up. easier to get out of a bed that's 5 feet off the ground than a futon on the ground
Alex Knight I was wondering if anyone else was thinking that, too. I’m 57, and although I love laying on the floor, my knee(s) are getting pretty arthritic and I can barely get up from the floor without using a chair or table to help. I was thinking that if this is something I really wanted to do, it could be put on a platform, either a bed platform or a built in bed type thing.
Stephanie Baker honestly .... I’ve slept on both a lot. Just get a super firm bed. It’s about the same. And a good futon isn’t cheap. They end up running about $1,000 anyway. So it’s not like you saving money.
I have been sleeping on two blankets for the past year. The first two weeks were rough. But my back it is so much healthier. I’ll have to try this one out.
I really want to try one of these out! I sleep in a normal cushiony bed - It feels great to sleep without my pillows, yet I always fall back into the habit of turning around to my pillows - I think I need to try out one of those !!
I have been sleeping on my Japanese fouton for about a year now I’m 42 and my back pain is all gone. I also made the switch when I found out about all the chemicals in mattresses. Mine is portable so I can just roll and tie it up When I get up in the morning
Sleeping on the floor, on a clean, soft mattress feels soooo nice. When I visited the U.K. and slept at a friend's house, the bed was so soft, my muscles ached and it felt like I was sinking into the bed.
Hey, just ordered one. I'm happy to live a healthier life. I've done research seeing that a lot of mattresses, particularly older ones (like mine) have harmful chemicals. Can't wait to get it. They also had a sell that just ends today that made it up to %65 off
I now sleep on carpet, live slightly more minimally, take lukewarm-cold showers, wear thin shoes/flip flops, use my phone less, and stopped using face wash and shampoo. Am I officially a hippie?
Never seen this guys vids before, but first off..DAMN SON HE IS RIPPED Anyhow - I'm a Westerner (NZ) and I've been sleeping on one of these for the 4 years, it's great. I think there's something to be said about sleeping on what your body needs as opposed to sleeping on something that's just really cooshy, that shit is gonna make you lazy! I recently moved back to a regular bed, it sucks. I miss my futon every day.
Low-key been sleeping on the floor since 2015, idk for me it's just way better. Recently bought one of these Japanese beds, should've got one years ago
Would it still have the same effect if I laid it on a line of wooden planks to elevate it to match a bed platform around it instead of just laying it on the floor?
If only I could convince my family to buy these and get rid of beds lol and if I could convince parents to let me get rid of my mattress lol I may buy one of these one day. It really makes sense to use one like how practical it is saves so much space.
Instead of sleeping on the floor, can I buy a wooden platform (similar to a table, but with really short legs) and place a soft cushion on that? I want air to circulate under me and hopefully prevent a bug from crawling on me.
I went camping in Big Bend National Park a few years ago and slept on a thin camping pad on top of packed gravel. It was amazing for my back and I felt great every day. I should look into one of these futons.
In rural areas of Turkey some people sleep in similar cushions we name "döşek" and most homes everywhere have them ready for visitors as well. I especially like sleeping on them
Update: first night of sleep on my J-Life Shikibuton was 3/28/24. Last night was 4/13/2024. 16 days. I can honestly say it’s now feeling like my bed. I lay down on it and I can feel my bones doing their job and taking the pressure off my muscles. It’s how it’s suppose to work. It’s amazing! Still some tossing and turning and some soreness at times but it’s getting better and my back is getting stronger!! I’m also practicing floor sitting during the day. Fighting aging! I’m 51
It's almost a year since you updated this video so can you make a update video about the shikibuton about how you feel after a year of sleeping on it if you are currently sleeping on it.

I bought mine 6 years ago and I am still using it. I have some of the best sleep on this mattress !
"Less is more" Truer words have never been spoken..
I have one for 1 1/2 years ! I have scoliosis and this has helped me greatly!
I've been sleeping on the floor for about 3 years now, might give this a try!
I like the idea, I would still use a box under it because we have many insects and crawling animals where I live.
Thank you.
Glad to hear! Good luck and hope everything turns out well. Stay safe!
I've been sleeping on a shikibuton for a year and love it! It solved most of my sleeping problems.
Instead of using a "fitted sheet", try putting the futon in a duvet cover.
Modern problems...
@@HUNKragor Modern solutions!
I'LL probably google this, but could you explain what a duvet cover is?
@@armandoosuna6525 It's a quilt
I grew up sleeping on the floor and now I’ve completely despised beds, floor beds are so cost-efficient and I think for myself, way better than a regular big ol’ bed!
Idk why this video doesn’t have more views
Haha thank you!!
These kind of beds fixed my sciatica. Best pain relief investment I ever made. 😁👍
I'm sofa king happy 4 u

_Some_ effort but not terrible, a worth while project for sheets that fit and retain the beds shape 🤷🏼♀️
Cheers and happy sleeping!!
awesome!!
Thank you for sharing this. Do they generally use any wool in the futon?wool is supposed to not get mold I think?
@@dianeibsen5994 oh sorry, I don’t really know much about the materials. But maybe not much wool as it would get too hot in summer.
- I've been sleeping on floor ever since I'm a child. Tbh when we moveout from our old apartment and bought a bed, I used it for couple of days and go back to sleeping floor. The floor is my life now.
I can't throw my bed out the window I live on the 8th floor 😷
I mean, no one's saying you still can't do it.

People appreciating japan to sleep on floor
Me sleeping on floor my whole life in because INDIAN
Do you know why I am here? I am from Bangladesh but now living in Canada for my mom's PhD. And the mattresses here are all springy and my dad is having back pain. The futon looks similar to the "gadda" in Hindi.
We really need to appreciate the fact that a lot of practices done in 3rd world countries are better. Be it the practice of sleeping on floor or recycling everything. There is still much more West should learn from us
@@adiltambe8018 Yes I agree. Specially local manufacturing. Here everything is industrialized and that's supposed to be"better". In my country if you need a sweater, you would go to the local weaver/tailor, they would make it for you. And if you need a knife, you go see the local blacksmith who manually makes the knife. See NO carbon emissions, no exploitation, no child labor, no NOTHING!!! It's just simply better than industry, which has all the problems mentioned above.
adil tambe yeah. Cause no offense but some of us aren’t all about money to the extent of the expense of health
@@cloudnine2450 Exactly. Why does the system have to be like this? Back in my country, things like this were cheap. But hear my family has to save money and it is specially hard as we are between a move. Good health is a right not a privilege.
Just got my new one delivered today. All from this video! Watched it last year and been thinking about it ever since. Bought one on a black Friday deal. Can't wait to sleep on it tonight
Was I the only person who God an ad for a bed on this video?
Bless the RUclips algorithm for being so close yet so far. It's the little stupid things in life that make me laugh.
Finally I found you talking about it. I've been looking for this since 10 years ago after I slept on one in South Korea

The man who sleeps on the floor can not fall out of bed 😁
buying it. Not only for the culture, but the coziness
Strangely enough YT recommenced your video to me; glad I found your channel and Im definitely gonna invest into a shikibuton once I get my own place
Gonna replace my bed for a futon. Makes it easier move & clean the floor, sick of moving my heavy frame. 😂
Do it
@@CadePriorFilms
Already did. Futon comes in two weeks. 😉😁
I’m currently leaving in Japan and these things are amazing and in Japan they’re less then $100 for the whole setup
You've convinced me. I was about to buy a new mattress and bed this evening. I'm throwing my bed away tomorrow morning
Mine is portable so I can just roll and tie it up
When I get up in the morning
Which one did you end up buying? I’m shopping around for two more for my kids and love the idea of one that is more portable!
The fact that am living a minimalist lifestyle does not mean i should throw away my bed. I love my bed 😀😀
Sleeping on the floor, on a clean, soft mattress feels soooo nice. When I visited the U.K. and slept at a friend's house, the bed was so soft, my muscles ached and it felt like I was sinking into the bed.
I used to sleep on the floor, I enjoyed it.
Why can't you anymore ?
Hey, just ordered one. I'm happy to live a healthier life. I've done research seeing that a lot of mattresses, particularly older ones (like mine) have harmful chemicals. Can't wait to get it. They also had a sell that just ends today that made it up to %65 off
I now sleep on carpet, live slightly more minimally, take lukewarm-cold showers, wear thin shoes/flip flops, use my phone less, and stopped using face wash and shampoo. Am I officially a hippie?
Honestly that lifestyle sounds so fulfilling
Inspiriiing
@Jake I dont use shampoo anymore, I just needed one more step
Yeah, I used to make fun of hippies....until I started doing similar strange things.
You should still wash your face with a very mild cleanser
I've been sleeping on the floor since I was a kid and the experience of sleeping on floor is the best.
Never seen this guys vids before, but first off..DAMN SON HE IS RIPPED
Anyhow - I'm a Westerner (NZ) and I've been sleeping on one of these for the 4 years, it's great. I think there's something to be said about sleeping on what your body needs as opposed to sleeping on something that's just really cooshy, that shit is gonna make you lazy!
I recently moved back to a regular bed, it sucks. I miss my futon every day.
Simp
Low-key been sleeping on the floor since 2015, idk for me it's just way better. Recently bought one of these Japanese beds, should've got one years ago
The mattres ads ain't stopping
Switched and I definitely do not regret it
where did u buy it?
@@justsomeinternetuser I got mine off of Amazon
Would it still have the same effect if I laid it on a line of wooden planks to elevate it to match a bed platform around it instead of just laying it on the floor?
I would say hell yeah, have fun!
If only I could convince my family to buy these and get rid of beds lol and if I could convince parents to let me get rid of my mattress lol I may buy one of these one day. It really makes sense to use one like how practical it is saves so much space.
I did so. I am so happy.
Awesome! glad to hear!!
I just invested in a nice futon and tossed my old bed and mattress. Best thing iv ever done. My back problems are so much better now
Instead of sleeping on the floor, can I buy a wooden platform (similar to a table, but with really short legs) and place a soft cushion on that? I want air to circulate under me and hopefully prevent a bug from crawling on me.

I should look into one of these futons.
I sleep on the carpet it’s even better. Less stuff in my room.
