I love how you had like an American accent and everything in the beginning of the video and the Malaysian just jumped out when you met with the others 😂
Words can't describe how THANKFUL I am to you, @ShaunYeoh! Thanks for inspiring me from the very start until now! Devastatingly, I didn't make it as Finalists! Again, Merci! It's okay I guess as every cloud has its own silver lining! :')
Avec plaisir Ariff. I can assure you that at the 2019 YES Selection Camp, there were many students who were great matches as exchange students personality-wise, but fell short of the strict requirements set by the program sponsors. No matter what, I’m sure the passion to learn and explore the world will come handy whenever the opportunity does come to travel abroad. All the best for the future :)
JasonTheMask X From what I’ve heard, it changes from time to time, but honestly I am unsure too. Final decision of selected candidates depends on US Embassy I think.
The final episode of my exchange program! Only took me 2 months to do after I came back haha (procrastination +5). Anyway, I’ll be going back to music related content now, but feel free to ask questions about the KL YES program and I’ll try to answer them in the comments. Also, all the best to any of you guys watching this who may be going on future exchange programs, I promise it will be life changing. PS: I didn’t say anything in the last 3 minutes of the video because at Schipoll, Shirleen dropped my camera and broke my Rode microphone! :/ Therefore, I decided to make a quick paced energetic montage! :D
I am juggling A Levels while pursuing music (jazz arranging and composing, production, piano, drums and guitar) and French as a foreign language. Whether you should go or not is a question only you can answer based on your own circumstances, but for me, it was a 110% worth it. Everything from my host family, schooling, meeting other exchange students, improving my English to being able to return as a YES alumni with the opportunity to help out at YES camps and seeing future exchange students in the making all add up to me having absolutely no regrets going on the program.
It will depend on your state and school, but for me, as you can see in my vlogs, I was required to take English and American History. Those two subjects themselves are incredibly mind-opening compared to what we study in Malaysia (at least for me). I also took piano (which gave me the opportunity to perform in school) and French (which along with meeting a Belgian exchange student, made me decide to pursue French back home). You will most likely have opportunities to do sports and join clubs, but you'll have to find out when you're there! :)
JasonTheMask X Like I said, choosing to go on the program or not is completely dependent on one’s situation. I agree with what you said about having to give up other scholarships and academics though. With spectacular grades and offers to immediately pursue a desired course/career after high school, I believe many people would too be less interested in the KL YES Program. I am a year behind some of my Form 5 classmates when it comes to studies, but for me, my grades were not “spectacular” and neither are my passions in music and foreign language easily pursuable in Malaysia. Therefore, I took a chance going on this program to pursue both in school in the US. This program was the first time I left the Malayan Peninsula, touched snow or experienced winter (which was the same for many other students). I am also not one who would probably be able travel abroad again for the short term future, so simply travelling so far for free tipped the balance for me. Regarding the possibility of American High Schools being below par and picking up negative cultures, there is a local coordinator in charge of supervising your stay in America. This would be covered more in-depth in the pre-departure orientation, but your coordinator would be able to help if you happened to have any problem on the program. I personally didn’t have any issue, so I can’t say what a coordinator can or cannot do. I think in the end, you’re gonna have to make the choice based on your circumstances. Many people value academics more than cultural learning, and many others feel the contrary. If you’ve made up your mind that you would like to pursue your studies rather than this program, do inform so earlier in order for those on the reserved list to be able to fill in your space. Nevertheless, all the best for the future and I’m sure you’ll do great in whatever you wish to pursue! :)
Hey, I've been watching all of your exchange student vlogs and it really inspired me to apply to this program next year. I was just wondering what are the core criteria I have to achieve in order to join this program and would you mind telling me your results for your form 4 year end exam and extracurricular as reference ?
I was generally and A-B student in Form 4 and my co-curricular activities involved playing music in theatrical productions, songwriting and running this RUclips channel!
Hi! Great to see your amazing journey. I want to ask whether we get to live with the other exchange student or not.. I was wondering if we lives alone with the host family or with the other participants..😅 I want to apply for next year. Wish me luck🙆
Great video! By the way, I'm a YES Student 17/18 from Indonesia, I was in the same orientation as you and on the same flight until KLIA! Keep up the good work bro
Shaun ..I am from India and I am participating as a kl- yes program from my secondary school but till now I didn't receive any email from afs. .so can u give me some tips what to do
Hey there !u really really inspired me to try my luck and be yes kl student but i have 2 questions i cant seem ti find an answer for anywhere the first one is :when i come back to my home country is it obligatory to reapeat the year? And if i scored high grades while being in an americain highschool can i finish studying there without coming back? I would really appreciate it if u answer!
English should be at about an A or B grade in school for the SPM syllabus. There will be an English assessment test before you are selected to go for the program. If you are able to understand American English like in RUclips videos, speak and be understood, as well as have no problem reading or writing average SPM level papers, you’ll be fine.
Zeeshan Azam Malaysia applications for the upcoming year are open from start of the previous year to around March/April. For example, if you wish to go on the 2019 program, you would have to have applied by April 2018 and pass through all the interviews. The Malaysian YES 2019 batch that will depart in January 2019 have already been selected, but if you are Form 5 in 2019, you may apply early next year!
please answer my question huhu, this scholarship is only 1 school year right? so for example when I am applying to be a gr11 student there, when I go back in my country, do i have to repeat grade 11?
I’m sorry for saying this but im a muslim and i can only eat halal food and so on so what happen to the muslim participants, do they get an exemption for food and for the foster family?
In general, it will depend on host families. Some may not necessarily be able to fully meet your halal requirements, but they must definitely show understanding/respect to it. Should you get chosen for the program, YES volunteers/staff will explain into more detail about how to practice Islam (including diet, pets, prayer, etc.) in America during pre-departure or other orientations related to this program.
Hey....it was amazing and some kind of heart touching Experience watching this ....I have applied for KL- yes programme and I'm currently in round 3 ....And the round 4 is gonna be a panel interview so can you give me some tips to survive and succeed the interview...I'm really desperate ..I'll be glad if you will help me @ShaunYeoh
