Pokémon White’s coverage legendary Zekrom has been mediocre for the majority of its competitive career. Zekrom was actually pretty good in its debut generation, being ranked a B+ tier Pokémon in the gen 5 Ubers metagame. However in both gen 6 & 7 Ubers it has fallen down to C+ and C- rating respectively. At first glance you might not expect this. Zekrom’s stats are good under Ubers standards. It has a solid attack stat, good bulk across the board, an average speed tier and an amazing offensive typing. Yet somehow it has been rather awful, with the exception of gen 5. However Zekrom managed to turn this around with its reintroduction in gen 8, where it is one of the most fearsome wallbreakers in the tier and ranked a solid A tier Pokemon. So what happened to Zekrom? What makes it standout and how did it manage to go from underwhelming to a metagame staple?

Yeah Zekrom struggled from gen 6-7 because Xerneas, the primals and more.
Glad he made a resurgence in gen 8 and when he comes back for gen 9, I hope he has something to combine his power with Miraidon to be a Dragon/Electric great team.

For a trio focused heavily on being _dragons_ and originally being parts of a single _Original Dragon,_ the Tao trio don't really make use of their Dragon types that much nowadays. Draco Meteor and Outrage used to be very good in their debut gens, but nowadays Outrage is completely unusable with the existance of Fairy-types and even Draco Meteor is starting to slowly feel the effects of move power creep. In the case of Reshiram, it would rather spam Blue Flare than drop a Draco and get its offensive presence immediately halved. And Kyurem only ever runs Draco Meteor reluctantly because all of its signature moves got screwed over.
So once a game covering Unova again gets released, I hope the Tao trio receive a new signature move akin to the Lake trio (but the move has to be, you know, not terrible). This time being a 130 bp, 85% accurate Dragon-type move. And if they want to go full over the top with it, it could have a Shell Side Arm-like effect where it becomes physical _and_ is a contact move (an important downside compared to moves like Photon Geyser or Tera Blast, plus is more in tune with Zekrom always full body tackling into stuff) if that would deal more damage.
And for anyone crying that "the Tao trio would get 3+ signature moves each, then!" I'd like to point out that 1. Reshiram and Zekrom's current signature moves are pretty much an evolution of each other - Fusion Bolt is upgraded into Bolt Strike and Fusion Flare is upgraded into Blue Flare once the respective legendary becomes Level 88 - and 2. Alolan Marowak has three signature moves as well; almost 4 since Bone Rush is learned by only two other mons and used to be its third signature move. I'm pretty sure the cover legendaries of Gen 5 can be cut some slack over a regional variant of a regular Pokemon.
kyurem also gets those moves and glaciate, icy burn and freeze shock.
they could give the Tao trio the ability to instant kill every pokemon in the game with zero counters, and it would still be balanced because of power creep lmao
As a big Unova fan, I approve. And Zygard already has 3 signature moves.
Besides you're not talking of a signature move for every member of the trio (I mean 3 new moves) but a common signature move, so I don't see any problem. 😁
And moreover Fusion Bolt/Flare are also usable by Kyurem, so it's very different from Bolt Strike/Fusion Flare.
I would take any buff to this trio!
Also they need to rework Kyurem's signature moves. Sure Glaciate could have some use in VGC but Kyurem is not the kind of pokemon that is best suited to use a icy wind like move.

It could either be solid or completely unusable, I don't think there is much in between.
Miraidon is definitely a better mon but at the same time a team up of the two could be insane in theory.
Those teams that run both Koraidon and Miraidon could exchange Koraidon from Zekrom and they would have a pretty good wallbreaking combo on both sides.
Stacking weaknesses is a downside tho and Koraidon is still faster so Idk how viable this strat could be.
All I know is that a +1 DDance + Life Orb + Electric Terrain Bolt Strike can melt any non Ground types (besides Zamazenta I think, gotta check calcs on that one).
Shame Ground types are already everywhere in Ubers to try to check Miraidon tho.
Ran the calcs, even +1 fully physically defensive Zamazenta-Crowned takes up to 75% from it😳
Yeah, it nukes every other non Ground type.
And even the fact they have the same offensive typing can be good. Miraidon can lure ground type and lauch powerful Draco Meteors, then enabling a Zekrom sweep. Usually you don't have several checks so if Zekrom or Miraidon can take one down the other can sweep.
On a defensive perspective having both is bad, however.

it is very curious how the mixed variant of zekrom success in gen5 seen decently, is almost eclipsed in later gens less, gen 8 straightforward, zekrom has been a pokemon that like its counterpart, if it had a higher speed, it could have been a completely physical pokemon and could pivot with volt swicht, but the fact that it was stuck as a 2 gen as a mediocre or very bad pokemon (so much so that even reshiram in SM was slightly better), changing for SWSH for good and maybe it can manage in gen9 with a tera fairy to make fun of the faster dragons that would integrate it in one hit, although to tell the truth I like how this pokemon evolved in singles (VGC is another story, something more sad. .) but here if he did things moderately well, so much that gave me many successes in ladder when he was still, definitely a pokemon of solid box legend.
I always thought they should've buffed Turboblaze and Teravolt to give a 50% power boost to Fire and Electric moves respectively, be able to bypass Full Metal Body, Shadow Shield and Prism Armor and remove Ice Burn and Freeze Shock's charge turns when Kyurem has 33% HP or less. The Kyurem fusions having three STAB types from their abilities would be super cool.
Zekroms ability ignoring ground type inmunities, and reshiram ignoring fire type inmunities
Those would be dope af, but would make kyurem pretty strong
Not unbelivably strong tho, the signature moves become ice type when absorbed
I also want to note that in a pokemon unrestricted Usum tournament in Europe where I ended top 5, everyone was surprised that I used Zekrom, and apart from the fusion bolt-fusion flare combo between Zekrom and Kyuerm White, I used him as a direct counter to Primal Kyogre. One hit and it was Kyogreover. Something that people asked me was "But Kyogre has ice beam how were you so confident" and I guess everyone forgot that in gen 7 the primal bois usually had negative nature in speed +0 IVs to try to secure the rain (or the sunlight) and I considered it one of the most fun torunaments I've participated in

I find it funny how looking at the stats zekrom feels like a slightly better bax
What's also great is that even though miraidon has the same typing, it shouldn't be abled to outclassed zekrom when it returns due to both playing very different rolls, zekroms a mixed leaning on physical wallbreaker that relies on setup while miraidon is mostly a terain setting special sweeper, if anything running them together would be potentially good

Back in the day, base 90 speed was (and arguably still is) decent and a fairly logical standard for the "big fat unstoppable box art legendaries", electric type or not.
It's not an issue of GF's past design philosophy, but rather a problem with the unreasonable power creep from gen 8/9: In that short span, they introduced 8 Ubers-viable pokemon with a speed tier above 130 (Zacian, Eternatus, Calyrex-Shadow(/Spectrier/Dragapult), Miraidon, Koraidon, Flutter Mane, Chien-Pao and Iron Bundle).
This leads to past gens legends looking slow, but they didn't use to be this way.

@@lordinfernape4753yeah. Of they can't slow down newer Pokes then just speed up older ones and put a ceiling on how fast non-legendaries can go.
I understand though that maybe they made these large legendaries 90 spd back then so the smaller mythical outspeed them but that don't make sense now.
While Box art legendaries are always meant to be on the side of overpowered to really sell the feel of a legendary creature, they also attempted to balance them out somewhat, so a single box-art legendary couldn't just sweep an entire team of pokemon just one step below them. In early gens, 90 was pretty decent speed, while 100 was the benchmark of what was considered actually fast, pokemon with 90 speed were solidly average. It's a similar idea to how most of the Pseudo-legendary 600 pokemon have a 4x weakness, or otherwise struggle in some fashion. (Metagross mega slow, slaking, while not a true pseudo legendary, suffers from truant in exchange for its high stats). It means you can have legendaries exist in a field with weaker pokemon stat-wise, without just utterly eclipse them. It means the game doesn't just turn into funny button simulator.
@@lordinfernape4753Well now Zekrom does have DD, and base 90 at +1 is enough to outspeed Zacian-Crowned so it's fine.
Your argument kind of sounds like "it's my favorite mon, it should be invincible", which is a straight up uncompetitive mindset. For instance i really like Primal-Groudon but i don't want it to have 200 speed or SpD because it would then be brutally overpowered, banned to AG, and then i woudn't be able to play it anymore, you know ?

As a big Zekrom fan, I'm happy it's finally strong. Now I can say that Miraidon being stronger than Zekrom is not Zekrom's fault, it's just Miraidon being absoluty broken (and AG in national dex by the way).

I have zekrom, i gave it a assulet vast in gen 9 and gave it 252 evs in hp & sp.defense.
Magnet rise dragon dance is decent , you can setup in front of Groudon / Defensive Necrozma DM

I wouldn't say that Zekrom was garbage, it was very good in gen 5 and good in XY, and even during ORAS and USUM it was regarded as a theoretically sound Pokemon (unlike Reshiram), it's problem was just that it fared poorly against the top tiers of Ubers. In XY that was manageable as the only terrible MU it had against a new mon was with Xerneas, and it could switch chunk it with Bolt Strike or use Volt Switch predicting it, the real issue was when Mega Salamence and especially Primal Groudon came into the fray, Salamence was literally Zekrom but better and it could always revenge kill it unless it was a Scarf Outrage, meamwhile PG legitimately stopped everything Zekrom could try dead cold, the only thing Zekrom could try against it was a Life Orb Draco Meteor, but if it were a SpD PG then it just bounced off of it.
Zekrom would have been solid in Gen 8 even without the buffs it received solely because the meta was much much kinder to it, the addition of DD was just icing on the cake
