  • Adagio cantabile, second movement from Piano Sonata No. 8, Op. 13 "Pathétique"
    Vladimir Ashkenazy, piano
Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 8 in C minor, Op. 13, commonly known as Sonata Pathétique, was written in 1798 when the composer was 27 years old, and was published in 1799. Beethoven dedicated the work to his friend Prince Karl von Lichnowsky. Although commonly thought to be one of the few works to be named by the composer himself, it was actually named Grande sonate pathétique (to Beethoven's liking) by the publisher, who was impressed by the sonata's tragic sonorities. The Adagio movement opens with a famous cantabile melody. This theme is played three times, always in A-flat major, separated by two modulating episodes. The first episode is set in F minor (parallel to A-flat major), further modulating to E-flat major before returning to the main theme. The second episode begins in A-flat minor and modulates to E major. With the final return of the main theme, the accompaniment becomes richer and takes on the triplet rhythm of the second episode.
Quoted from Charles Burkhart's "Anthology for Musical Analysis"
    Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 - 1827)

You can feel Beethoven communing with God in the emotion of his music. Something like that, his heart is so wide open and you can feel it through his music. That is why his music can bring us to tears, it's his wide open heart gently influencing our own hearts to open. In the moments I listen to beethoven, it is easier for me to love the whole world. I believe that was the purpose of his music, to open people's hearts so that they may love like beethoven loved when composing music

Magnificent. This was one of Beethoven's most influential as well as finest sonatas. The note progressions in the third measure can be heard in many songs and compositions, including "What I Did For Love" from "A Chorus Line" and "Just Because" from Sesame Street's "Roosevelt Franklin" album. Beethoven reused them himself in the third movement of his 9th Symphony. Thanks for posting!

    • @jordidewaard2937

As he should. People rarely give the original composer credit for their theme, or whatever part they use simply because it's not necessary. There is no copyright on music from composers that died over 70 years ago (Last time I checked, it was 70 at least), which is also why stuff like Tom and Jerry is filled with classical music in the background (everyone knows Liszt's Hungarian Raphsody haha). I like how he actually gave Beethoven credit though, means he either just respects Beethoven, or he wants people to learn about Beethoven. Either way, I can respect it.

Its already a beautiful piece, but I came from a comment comparing this to "fourside" from Earthbound, and hearing the same leitmotifs make this hit really hard for me emotionally.

I wrote my Sophomore Music Theory Final Paper on this piece. Almost three years ago. I was top of all my classes in academics, but probably the very bottom of my class when it came to performance. I had no emotion in my playing, but i could analyze the hell out of some sheet music and train the hell out of my ear. Now it's three years later, and I've pretty much quit music at this point.. I truly miss those days though. When i felt like i had purpose. Even though my instrumental teacher stressed the hell out of me, I wish i could go back.
Man.. I can't believe it's almost been three years.

There's always a chance for an Encore. Three years is nothing in the score of life. Play on, even for your own sake, even should no one chance to hear it, play on, with music in your heart.

There's an anime called Big O, and an episode I think you might like.
It's a series that's part Batman, part film noirs, and it has robots.
One of the protagonists (Roger) takes the other one (Dorothy), a robot, to see a piano teacher because she doesn't play with "enough emotion". Roger points out that when the teacher is playing, people are at ease--he plays at a bar, you see.
Her piano teacher upon hearing Dorothy play says, "I don't see why you need me to teach her. She sounds like she's accomplished." "No," Roger says, weary from sleep deprivation, "If she's going to insist on being my alarm clock, she needs to have a more soulful approach, like you," says Roger.
The teacher understands, and tries to help poor Dorothy. During the episode, the teacher is involved in some sins-of-the-father/sins-of-the-son dilemmas which cause him to doubt whether or not he can remain playing piano.
But what calls him back is when Dorothy plays the song he tried to teach her. The piece of music? Chopin's Raindrop Sonata, if I rightly recall.
You don't have to like anine at all, but watch that episode. I think it's episode 5, 6, or 7.

Excelente tema, me encanta.

If time stops for you when you listen to this piece, read this:
“… pleasure in the beautiful consists, to a large extent in the fact that, when we enter the state of pure contemplation, we are raised for the moment above all willing, above all desires and cares; we are, so to speak, rid of ourselves … And we know that these moments, when, delivered from the fierce pressure of the will, we emerge, as it were, from the heavy atmosphere of the earth, are the most blissful that we experience.”
    - Arthur Schopenhauer
