- Adagio cantabile, second movement from Piano Sonata No. 8, Op. 13 "Pathétique"
Vladimir Ashkenazy, piano
Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 8 in C minor, Op. 13, commonly known as Sonata Pathétique, was written in 1798 when the composer was 27 years old, and was published in 1799. Beethoven dedicated the work to his friend Prince Karl von Lichnowsky. Although commonly thought to be one of the few works to be named by the composer himself, it was actually named Grande sonate pathétique (to Beethoven's liking) by the publisher, who was impressed by the sonata's tragic sonorities. The Adagio movement opens with a famous cantabile melody. This theme is played three times, always in A-flat major, separated by two modulating episodes. The first episode is set in F minor (parallel to A-flat major), further modulating to E-flat major before returning to the main theme. The second episode begins in A-flat minor and modulates to E major. With the final return of the main theme, the accompaniment becomes richer and takes on the triplet rhythm of the second episode.

this has always been my favourite piece by beethoven *.*
I love it too, and I used to think Chopin composed it!
U alive Party Pikachu?
@@zeldafan1942 Is he alive?
@@impostoeroubo405 No, Beethoven was classical from the era of Mozart, and Frederic Chopin composed pieces like "Nocturne" and "Etude", and he was romantic music like the more complex Franz Liszt ("Liebestraum", "Hungarian Rhapsody").
I like the 3rd movement more, party Pikachu 😄
You can feel Beethoven communing with God in the emotion of his music. Something like that, his heart is so wide open and you can feel it through his music. That is why his music can bring us to tears, it's his wide open heart gently influencing our own hearts to open. In the moments I listen to beethoven, it is easier for me to love the whole world. I believe that was the purpose of his music, to open people's hearts so that they may love like beethoven loved when composing music
This night is mine
It’s only you and I
Tomorrow
Is a long time away
This night can last forever
That's why this sounds so familiar
@@nsos28 Because another great musician who knows his classicals wanted to honour Von Beethoven and wrote this:

One of the most beautiful pieces ever written. Heavenly music.
This is so beautiful. It has a wistfulness and a certain sadness but it doesn't wallow in it. Thoughtful.
What's wrong with wallowing in Beethoven?
John Nothing, he has plenty of wallowing in his music, this just isn’t an example of it.
Hate how it ends. He should have gone on the deep end of the abyss.
well said, fine gentleman
I said the same thing...word for word to someone about 8 months ago. bizarre but cool.
When I listen to this movement, my soul is deceived into believing that for 5 minutes, there is no past, no present and no future.
If you heard me play it, you'd long for the past, dread the present, and would desperately cling for the future.
@@Schrodinger_ If RUclips comment awards were a thing, you sir would have won it by a landslide
Absolutely agree
It is kind of true if you think about it
Music is the only thing that's real.
And to think the man felt the first symptoms of deafness at just 29, yet wrote avant garde music from that point on, not for his time, but for future generations.
I think he didn't write the songs he did *despite* his deafness, but maybe because of them. He made a lot of unique choices and tended to create sounds that produced a lot of vibrations, and that's part of why his music was so interesting
Adventures in good music was a radio show my mother used to play every afternoon. She would put it on and we would dance in the living room. The show always opened with this beautiful song. I always think of my wonderful Mommy dancing in heaven to this. I will miss her everyday until I meet her, there, again. I love her without end.
Definitely wouldn't consider Beethoven avant-garde, but he was extremely innovative within his own genre.
golden age will be amazing
Nct brought me here 💚 never grew up listening to classicals but this piece means something to me now because of them so, i hope everyone who comes here to listen to it has a nice day and may any sadness or worries you have, find a way to seek happiness too.
lmao i forgot they used this sample and I needed to hear this for an assignment and immediately started humming the golden age intro 😭😭
@@jvliawo valid cause doie's vocal was godsent
What timing. I played this over my Bluetooth on the way to work and it finished JUST AS I pulled into a parking space. I absolutely love this piece...one of his best ever!!
thank you nct for using this UGH SO BEAUTIFUL
This piece gets my eyes all misted up every bloody time.
the second movement always makes me cry, I don't know why. this is to die for!
Music like this once a day keeps bad moods away.
This piece has played a very important role in my childhood
I’m playing this piece for my Grade 8 exam. I was struggling a lot, but after I watched this, I felt more confident. Thank you!
I listened to the song 3 or four times and it just blows me away every time........
sorry, but it is not a song
The closest ones to me someday will know that when I die, I will reside somewhere between the beautifully haunting and equally soothing chords of this masterpiece.
this is like comfort food in music form
My mother passed away in 2017. I heard this & it brought me back to when I was a child growing up in our first house in the late 60's, '70's. I can still see & hear my mother playing this on our baby grand piano.
Now I'm 61 & living paycheck to paycheck due to INFLATION.
Beautiful, romantic, enchanting, reminds me of a warm summer night, cool breeze, candle light dinner, red wine, cheese cake dessert by the lake with a woman you love. Just staring into each others eyes, conversing about life, love and hopes for each other until the flames of the candle slowly die away.
I can so make a movie with this song hahaa
+j12torts sounds like an episode of Dinner Date, not a movie
+ j12torts Che romantico! Ma quando mai una cosa del genere, in questo mondo così arido, brutale e senza cultura al bello...
Cool!
That's fitting because Beethoven actually said he wrote this as an ode to cheesecake.
This is my all time favorite of Beethoven so beautiful 😍.
Is mine too, in fact it is my favourite music of all time.
Hey love the score added in it's handy to follow the music I wish all of the music was like this!
5 STARS
If all music was like this... that way we never could feel emotions like this man...
Without sadness we would never feel gladness
You all probably dont care at all but does anyone know a way to log back into an Instagram account?

@Oscar Jamal It worked and I finally got access to my account again. Im so happy:D
Thanks so much, you really help me out !
When I hear this, it reminds me a part in Novel, Story or something.
When it's time to say farewell to each other and part ways..
And all the while, remembering the priceless memories the characters had with one another.
Bittersweet, yes this is how I can describe this song.
This song was played in Ruroni Kenshin.
So beautiful :3
It's amazing how Beethoven made this music
It's not a 'song'
Its not simply a song. Its a story. A peice of art. A book, a tale, a series of emotions tied together through strings of ever lasting feelings and thoughts and beauty! Love, fear, grief, anger, beethoven.
It's still not a 'song'.
Was also played in the Patlabor WXIII movie
yumi's death....
Meu coração fica muito feliz quando ouço esta sonata n 8 de Beethoven
I played this song for my grandma's funeral it was her favorite song, and i still can play this whole song without sheet music. I went to state solo and revived a 1

Man, that was not the direction I thought they would take it at all.
终于找到了。让人泪流的音乐。certainly cry,i miss my classmates from northeast forestry university .
LUSH, WONDERFUL, SPLNDID. COULD ONLY BE BEETHOVEN, THE BEST OF THE BEST
Grandpa used to play this religiously and dang it took me many years to find it. Such a good song
I used to play this on my Yamaha C3 piano about 25 years ago! after hearing it completely for the first time in many years I now need to download the sheet music and try playing it again. As I remember my left hand and right hand were often getting tangled up with each other and luckily the sheet music shows which fingers to use, however the images on screen of this video for the numbers of the fingers are quite small so it would be better to find the full size sheet music which I will do, then print out and finally be able to play this beautiful music again. Thank you, uploader!
This is one of the most beautiful places I've ever heard. I never knew the name of it and I actually found it today from looking at an old TV midsummer murders. Now I know the name and I can listen to it anytime takes my breath away
THE sonata. Moving, profound.
I guess you could say, that the people who dislike this video are...

That means passionate you dumbass.

lmao!
Love this piece of song by Beethoven. By far one of my favourites.
Magnificent. This was one of Beethoven's most influential as well as finest sonatas. The note progressions in the third measure can be heard in many songs and compositions, including "What I Did For Love" from "A Chorus Line" and "Just Because" from Sesame Street's "Roosevelt Franklin" album. Beethoven reused them himself in the third movement of his 9th Symphony. Thanks for posting!
Sooo loving the touch by Ashkenazy!
I love Beethoven's compositions, thinking on trying to play this as best as possible for my best friends birthday on Tuesday (39 she'll be) record and send to her.
This was the lead in to a classical music hour on AFRS when I was stationed in Italy from 1968 to 1971. Best part of the show. So relaxing.
Perhaps Karl Haas?
That beautiful modulation from A flat Major to a very distant E Major.
Not quite distant, it is actually a F flat key, more related to the second part key A flat minor. E major enharmonic key had to be used.
@@diegoardila2463 Chopin - Trois Nouvelles Études No II in Ab Major also has an Ab to E modulation, very beautiful aswell.
Been looking for this for a while. I knew it was Beethoven, but could never track down which specific piece. It shows up in the background of movies and TV shows a lot.
I learned of this piece from the film "running on empty" starring River Phoenix, for that reason and another it evokes especially a bittersweet feeling for me. R.I.P River 🌹
This piece is what drew my attention to Beethoven, the Maestro.
My favorite piece to play..love it!
This is one of my favorites. It is so wonderful.
For those of you out there who think they might have heard this before but are not sure where? I first heard this in the film Running on Empty. It is the piece River Phoenix's character plays for his music teacher when asked to play something. Following the performance he is told "Well that's one thing you don't have to do and that's play in the school orchestra".
Happy 250th to an amazing composer!
For me this has to be the perfect sonata slow movement.
My fav piece of all time
I think this song was played in Rurouni Kenshin during a character's death. I'm glad I found it. Such a beautiful piece.
FinaTeh92 during & after the battle with the mighty Shishio
So true In the closed caption on cartoon network it was incorrectly attributed to Mozart. In the 1980's they would always play this song on Jamaican radio when announcing deaths. it is one of the greatest classical masterpieces!
It's not a 'song'.
Mr. Beethoven became famous after living many years of miserable life in the suburbs of Osaka until he was contacted by the producers of this amazingly classic anime. That transformed his life and wrote music for many other anime productions. Too sad he jumped to his death under a train of the JR Yamanote line in Tokyo Shibuya Station after knowing that the anime producers abruptly.and unilaterally canceled the contract and lost the ensuing lawsuit.
Hey anime guys....stick to your o-taku world and don’t venture were you don’t belong. And it’s not a “song”. Guess what... a song is sang by someone with voice. This is sublime music composed my a genius and performed by a superlative artist.
Indeed, this is played when Fumi dies, stabbed by Kenshin, trying to save Shishio. Wonderful scene.
The opening theme of this movement in the sonata is very moving.
you dont know how much ive been lookin for this and finally found it
This is the background song that plays when I'm with my love ❤️
This piece is so ahead of its time.
i've always thought of someone i love or admire playing or listening to this movement. it always have that bittersweetness yet loving passion into it!
my favorite piece to play at weddings
An interesting choice.
Beethoven's funeral march would be more to the point
Beethoven can give hope for us through his music to solve things in our life! Incredible...
this is my brainspotting music..i cried during therapy suddenly heard this ins..it reminds me of him, our memories..
Just a beautiful melody.
I first heard this piece when i watched "A Boy Named Charlie Brown", it was one of my favorite scenes in the movie. Good times 😊
You know how much Schroeder loves Beethoven! Initially I thought Chopin composed this piece, and Franz Liszt composed "Rage Over A Lost Penny"!
simply beautiful. Favorite song ever.
I want this to be played at my wedding and funeral
If I have one
Who knows I may be immortal
good choice.....your soul is immortal
You can win back your soul in a fiddle contest with the devil

Very beautiful music.....
this deserves just as much recognition as the moonlight sonata gets
Both have been played by Schroeder many times in the Charlie Brown cartoons!
Excelente tema, me encanta.
"This Night" by Billy Joel from "An Innocent Man!"
At least Billy gave him credit for the song on the album.
Wow, I didn't Know it, but I Know that a variation from this melody was Make in ''An American Tail'', so this sonate was trasformed in a Lullaby, the song is Called Somewhere Out there
neo got my back culture things tech tech on my mind
Golden age is coming
Beethoven is so neo, it’s true he bleeds green, I saw it
LOVE the bit at 1:00 till 1:20 . So beautiful !!! repeated it so many times !!
Takt Op Destiny 😍
@dreamwheasler I know people were saying that it might've been from a software and I was saying that I didn't think it was because of the use of emotion
@Lu Cheng The reply system we have today wasn't really in effect until about 2013-2014. Prior to that we only really had the option of tagging users with replies to comments. Any comments you'll see that are 10+ years old are going to have that set up to it.

Hello, everyone. The theme to "Adventures in Good Music," hosted by Dr. Karl Haas (1913-2005).

This sounds like saying goodbye to a good old friend
I loooooove this piece-and I’m playing it now 😊
This master piece makes me remember to my son and the mobile from his craddle.
You cannot listen to this piece and not think of Karl Haas. It's 2:00 AM while driving a lonely stretch of road alone in the world with this piece playing mildly on your audio system...
¡ no dont cry, just remember those old days, ! in your lap from 1955-1955, with tou MOTHER MOTHER
This tune also appears in the movie, "The Magic of Belle Isle" with Virginia Madsen, and Morgan Freeman.
i listen to this when im having a panic attack omg works every time
Yup, I do get panic attacks too. This song calms me down.
song? is this piece for voice?
+bach5861 no. it's for piano
I think bach5861 was being sarcastic lol
ChrissElizabeth no, a song has a singer. A peice has no vocalist.
Glad that Billy Joel gave LVB credit for "This night".
As he should. People rarely give the original composer credit for their theme, or whatever part they use simply because it's not necessary. There is no copyright on music from composers that died over 70 years ago (Last time I checked, it was 70 at least), which is also why stuff like Tom and Jerry is filled with classical music in the background (everyone knows Liszt's Hungarian Raphsody haha). I like how he actually gave Beethoven credit though, means he either just respects Beethoven, or he wants people to learn about Beethoven. Either way, I can respect it.
