this is based on manto's real life incident. mumtaz is himself and his friend who said "i could have killed you" was a very famous actor of that time and his close friend. the entire episode of manto's leaving bombay (quite similar to this story) was written in the intoduction to the book "kingdom's end", which is english translation of his urdu stories
