For me both 5150 and For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge were Van Halen at their best. Some people prefer the older stuff more but I think Sammy brought so much more to the band than just his voice.

The day Eddie died I had driven past Sunset Sound before sunrise on my way to pick up a production truck in Hollywood. Stared right at the big yellow sign while at the longest red light in town. Later on that day, KLOS programming was interrupted to break the news. A grip on set mentioned we were shooting less than a mile away from EVH’s 5150 studio right off of Coldwater Canyon. Learning the actual song seems like a fitting way to honor the legend.
Came to make my own comment. His summed it up pretty good. A+ Incredible playing. He’s among the kings and legends of all rock n roll, not just guitarists. Sad day.

Let's agree to disagree... I was in secondary school (12 yo) when 5150 came out and the title track became an instant classic. Fast forward 3 years, I started playing guitar and discovered that this was (and still is...) sort of a holy grail for guitar players. ...And I'm in Mexico.
+Maik Carballo what sucks is that in America this didn't really get much play. The radio played Dreams, When it's love, Love Walks in, Summer Nights, Best of Both Worlds. This should have been a single in America, but radio stations and record companies suck!
Good choice. From the DLR era, the most underrated track by FAR was and still is "Hear About It Later." From Van Hagar there are a whole bunch of them because the VH brothers refuse to promote that era of the band because they do not want Sammy and Mike making money from it. "Feelin'" is great as is "AFU". Although it killed the band "Humans Being" is great too.
When I first learned this song ,about a year after it came out, I was so gobsmacked at the songwriting that EVH had done, not as the more common form he had previously recorded( I am stammering trying to convey my thoughts!!) It was overwhelming in terms of composition. I really needed that year to have the song burned into my memory,so I could pull it off in one take...and that took a few weeks at that! I had anj even bigger respect for Ed,(if ,for me, was even possible) as a composer and rhythm player.I can play the song, without much thought to it at all by now....but to create it?!?!?!? HOLY SHIT!!! WHO THINKS OF COMPOSING THAT ON GUITAR??????? I could not write that in 1000 yrs of playing! I know music is not a competition, you should not rate guitarists who are truly masters of their craft. For instance ,when I was in High School it was Randy Rhoads vs. EVH. People would argue to the point of major yelling matches!!! But after I learned this song, I could not help but thinking that Ed was by far the better player. And that is by no means a put-down of RR. And my hands are not as big as EVH`s, so I can`t finger the chords in the intro exactly as he does. Ed uses his thumb to fret the E and A strings, or just the E. Masterpiece!! I STILL need to look at the neck at all times playing this, and if I have not played it in a while...It will take a couple of days to nail it. Thats a looooong time playing the guitar! LOL
I couldn’t agree more. This is, by far, his most complex rhythm and floored me when I learned it and saw what he was doing. In my opinion, I always felt that his rhythm playing was more complex than his solos. Don’t get me wrong, some of his solos are very complex.
There was such unbridled joy in Eddie’s playing. Joy and of course jaw dropping technique. And you capture both perfectly. Watching you play is helping me to get through a really hard time. I’m saddened tremendously that my musical inspiration is gone, but it warms my heart seeing so many talented individuals carrying on with his fire. It’s time for you to do some new videos. The world is waiting!
I started out with piano lessons. Played in public recitels.Sang in choir, played trumpet in high school, then switched to tuba. Did a stint one time where I played football, went in at half time changed out, played "Tea For Two" solo on the Tuba, at half time. went back in the locker room and changed out to play football again., lol. Sang solo in church choir. Took lessons in guitar from a gut that was pretty good on the 12 string. Bottom line, is I SUCK. lol. I had semi potential. YOU, you, have talent. YOU HOWEVER, have REAL palpable talent. More than most could ever dream of. Don't let it all go to waste. You "get it" - go for it dude..... You only live life once. Don't piss it away. That's all.

Props bro! I was serious about Van Halen starting in 1990 up until about 10 years ago. I could play every song perfectly and could play everything and ad-lib anything Eddie style live, and you nailed it on this one. The best I can say to you that you are doing it right! Amazing playing on one of the greatest Van Halen songs. This is a perfect composition by King Edward demonstrating his God like Rhythm and Lead playing thats all so seamless. I am 12 and learning this song, Ive got most of it down exept the solo, how long did it take you to get that good at it? im planning on playing this in this years talent show or next years, I don't know. Many of you probably don't believe that im a kid and can play this, so think what you want, but I have been told by my teacher and many others how advanced I am for my age :-)

Amazing playing on one of the greatest Van Halen songs. This is a perfect composition by King Edward demonstrating his God like Rhythm and Lead playing thats all so seamless. Fluidity and balance with such raw emotion and power. These days I weep uncontrollably listening Eddie's music. This post was no exception. Thanks for the great guitar track cover.

I am 12 and learning this song, Ive got most of it down exept the solo, how long did it take you to get that good at it? im planning on playing this in this years talent show or next years, I don't know. Many of you probably don't believe that im a kid and can play this, so think what you want, but I have been told by my teacher and many others how advanced I am for my age :-)
