It's kind of both, i didn't expect a season with a single official ATP title, i was contemplating the possibility 2024 to be slamless year from the back of my head, but i would of hooed he would at least snatch masters or two and myabe one or two ATP250/500 titles on top of olympic gold...i didn't expect he would win nothing, also that USO run was a real stinker, considering if he reached quarters at least he would score new record of record 9 seasons reaching the QF of all 4 slams, instead he failed in third round and now will have to start from blank page again in 2025 in attempt to break the tie with Federer both sitting at 8 such seasons...
Suddenly, Rafa fans forgot that before OL, their idol said ' my biggest achievement is the GOLD instead of 14 GL :). Even Carlos said ' I prefer to win OL instead of GL at the begging of this year :).
I think that this might sound a bit strange, but Novak desperately preferred an Olympic Gold and even was prepared to trade off two slam titles for the same. His whole year was devoted and dedicated to winning Olympics in what was his last and only chance; it was basically a do or die situation and knee surgery only made things complicated. Overcoming all such hurdles and challenges to accomplish what he ardently desired is the greatest achievement in living memory at a veteran age of 37 and that too winning it in style without losing a set. Now he has achieved the career Super slam as part of his majestic accomplishments and the only human to complete tennis by winning all big titles. This wouldn't have been possible even if he had won another slam.
Finals of Wimbledon, Olympic Gold... i think for a lackuster season he was still pretty successful. Depending on how it goes in Australia his next season should be stronger again.

He checked the last box on his bingo card. It's a sucess and now his mind is free to go get a couple more slams in the 2 years he has left.
🙌🏻
In a vacuum, it's a failure, but given the context, it's a success
