Since the dawn of time, RUclips has been my favorite media platform by far. From let's-plays and sketches to educational content, I loved the format of the content and the creators it rewarded. People like Mr. Beast, Mark Rober, or Markiplier, who have an admirable moral compass and can give a lot to the community.
One of the main reasons I loved RUclips was because it differed from most social media platforms that push low-effort and low attention span repetitive content. On the contrary, RUclips wasn't exploiting our brains' tendency to crave an immediate reward. Instead, it was full of longer videos that gave you knowledge or other long-lasting benefits instead of ADHD.
While the RUclips community was one of the factors that influenced the content produced on the platform, a big role was played by the platform regulations and the RUclips algorithm. The introduction of the algorithm that incentivised 10+ min videos and preferred watchtime over views massively helped to combat the rise of clickbait and promoted content that is entertaining throughout the whole video. This format was not only enjoyable to me and most of the community, it also prevented the creation of a toxic, attention-seeking environment that took over Instagram and Facebook, and thrives on apps like Musically and TikTok.
A couple of months ago, RUclips introduced the Shorts sub-platform. While I was excited at first that the RUclips developers are working on innovating the platform, it didn't take long for me to realize the negative impact of this feature. First of all, the Shorts represent everything that I (and most other people) don't like about other social media platforms, and the reason why RUclips was my favorite one. Second of all, it's incredibly sad that instead of Shorts becoming a platform for short RUclips videos, it basically became a second TikTok on RUclips. Many Shorts are just reposts from TikTok, which means there is no effort needed to create such Shorts and it's really hard to compete with the flood of TikTok trash when you are a genuine RUclips creator. The ability to post anything from TikTok on Shorts means free money for TikTok creators (and RUclips, unfortunately), which in turn means less money for OG RUclips creators, either those creating Shorts, or those creating old-school 10+ min videos.
The introduction of Shorts, a.k.a. "the second TikTok" to RUclips adds no additional value to the platform or the society in general, and will likely result in a downfall of the original RUclips content we all love.

Maybe a sort of Discover section could exist, where creators post quick hooks, or "trailers" corresponding to their longer videos. In this case, both the short and long videos by the creator must exist and be linked together in order to keep it from falling back into a short only page. To all the people grown with old style yt videos like gampelay, games theories etc… and now are addicted to tik tok scrolling: remember that you still remember the content you used to watch when you were kid,and you can’t tell what you’ve just watched in a 30 second reel. I’m glad I’ve now understood that long youtube videos manage you to fully empathize with the video’s content and makes you interested for a long time, and it’s a satisfaction to reach watching 20 minutes of a video talking about your favorite topic without the headache that scrolling makes to you (sorry for the english). I hope you all understood guys

Damn, this is the kind of video which puts words on everything I tried to explain to everybody around me. Wasn't waiting for it, but definitely needed. I'm not an English native (french) and since a very long time, I watch a lot of english content. Someway, it forces me to concentrate, sometimes even rewatch / listen to a part several times because my brain need to fully understand what I'm hearing.
That's how I understand why I never enjoyed that tiktok format. I built that good habit to focus on the message / argument and repeat each part until I get that kind of click which allows me to go forward.
I think this is a good approach, what the media tries to tell you and what you will remember, instead of just wanting to be infinitely entertained. That's how you really start feeling like losing your time when you get caught into that short video algorithm spiral.
As a digital student who wants to keep creating content in the long run, your video was all I needed to deal with imposter syndrome when releasing long & detailed content / videos. I shouldn't be afraid of that cancer (imo) tiktok trend.
Will definitely save this video for later, for me again, and people around me.

However, it does help that I have the self-control to not watch a lot of shorts outside of those circumstances. I've generally shied away from shorts, because they almost always serve my informational needs worse than regular videos. I generally only watch a short if it's something specific that i hadn't yet seen in longform, and then i get back out as fast as i can.
Episodes of random surfing happen, but not frequently because they tend to hurt my X-er brain and also bc within the short ecosystem i can't find the things i want to find unless they happen to be hit on by the algorithm, and even then i have to scroll and scroll to find it.
With regular form, scrolling is a lot faster and also the results returned are more topically diverse, multiplying the chances that i'll make a connection i _want_ to make instead of something that's just random from my PoV.
Probably many early Millennials are increasingly noticing this too.
But while short form emphasis can bring a lot of volume in viewing, i haven't yet seen any evidence that serving more shorts and less regular form increases ad responsiveness. I think that idea is basically speculation by platform owners, and just the latest in a long line of ideas meant to try to get us to see what _they_ want us to, rather than what _we_ prefer ... with the predictably mediocre results in the long run.

We do need a much better tool of connecting the shorts to the main video, currently the only ways are sharing the link to the original somewhere either in the comment section or in the description. Sometimes when you cut out from a bigger video, it shows where its taken from, but it doesnt support any type of editing and effects that I can make in premiere pro or whatever, and not every video supports even that small feature.

Great video, so nice to hear a reasoned viewpoint about the future of content that isn't just "you gotta make shorts and AI is going to kill us all"

I hate the addictive shorts. If I could I’d get them off my youtube homepage immediately. But there isn’t an option.

Good video, agree 100% with whats been said. Honestly I am scared of these short attention spans. What is it going to do to our society? Its not like short attention spans magically stop once people step out of their room

I hated the short form content in the style of mindlessly scrolling from the start and always loved longer video essay type stuff like Super Eyepatch Wolf and Pyrocynical. It would be great to see more of this and even discover new creators for myself that do stuff like that, so a push in this direction would be great from the platforms aswell. Great video!

I feel this video misses the forest for the trees. I completely agree that the new optimization you advocate would change the way in which we watch drastically, it does not stop to ask whether we should want this. These days large media companies can optimize their content so much that you can almost question your free will when reluctantly scrolling to the next video on TikTok. Our big dumb monkey brains have simply not evolved to be able to cope with the amount of science that goes into recommending videos. So before we try to make the next innovation that can more effectively monetize our attention span, we should stop to ask whether we should.

Great video! Really felt that part where you lay there for 25 minutes and do not remember anything after that.
I was so done with this feeling, I tried limiting the time for reddit and youtube to max 1 hour daily. The 1 hour is way more valuable and I only look up content I care and wanna learn more about. Works great upto this day.
And FYI you are so valuable that I look you in this one hour daily hehe lol 🙌

      Hello! :)
Switching from short form content (TikToks) to longer form such as RUclips videos does sound better, as people would stay to watch something for longer period. I'm worried it won't entirely solve the problem.
The way information is presented in videos (podcasts aside), usually is very pleasing for eyes: they're flashy, colorful, built like an awesome presentation. It would be harder to memorize a text-based information (books, newsletters, etc.) rather than a video. I feel like, with popularity of video-content, people on average started to have less control over their concentration.
What do you think? Please fill me in (pause) with some studies or videos on this topic. It is interesting! Distraction topic is related to attention-span.

Glad I found your video! Really like that you mentioned the short vs long content and trailers. It’s actually what I do with reels and shorts, because I notice a lot more people see the shorts and I hope to direct them to my longer videos (art studio vlogs). I mean personally I do this too, I swipe through reels/shorts until I see someone I like and get invested in their longer content.
