  • I think this may have been the first part I ordered for this car and I finally finished up the install recently, a few months later. After a painful discovery that led to some paintwork, the E36 finally has all new trim pieces all the way around. I wanted to share my process going through this install and some of the things I learned along the way, the hard way.
Here are the parts I replaced:

Vent Window Inner Gasket Seal - left: 51362255381

This was a huge help. I ordered the deteriorated outer seals a year ago but dreaded taking half the interior apart to replace them. I have the headliner out to fix that and said to myself now is the time. So thanks for showing how it goes. Not looking forward to removing the glue!

For those window/door seals that cover the seam where the structure gets welding together, there is usually a notch somewhere along that sheet metal seam. For that rear quarter glass it's at the bottom center, that is the "Datum" for the seal. There will be some sort of dot on the seal and if you line up that dot with the datum then it will fit everytime. I was an engineer at a automotive oem and nearly everyone does it the same!

I made window sealing systems in my previous life. In some vehicles the fixed glass is encapsulated inside the molding and shipped to the assembly plant.

@@timkinley1779 yeah there is some of that too. Nowadays due to NVH objectives most things or double or triple sealed.

17:50 this is a great opportunity to use some rinseless/waterless wash. I soak a demoted towel (used coating towel, etc) in my rinseless bucket to get the crud out without making too much of a mess. Really dirty areas will get "muddy" unless you are using something like ONR (or N914) that can encapsulate the dirt.

@Nica is correct. It's dented in two spots.
Oil will help tremendously here (whatever you feel is most safe is fine), but that metal body ledge with additional paint on it always adds difficulty. My process has always been to install the lower rubber piece first, then install the roofledge trim.
You also want to really push the plush seal into those corners more as well as ensure that this seal is laying flat around the entire perimeter otherwise it's like most all messed with E36 Coups, wavy. It helps to pinch close the valley that grips onto the body on this seal. Do this around the entire perimeter.
I hate to say it, but you have to do it again.

Hi Matt you do not need to remove rear windows, just undo rear catch and open glass about 3 -4 inches .pull off seals ,soak glue with brake cleaner ,scrape off with plastic scraper, once removed clean ,then slide back in both seals , (start tape removal by 5mm outside )then pull off tape .while in place
    30 minutes each side

I think those front seatbelts are still available. I know ECS says NLA but double check Schmeidmann & FCPEuro. I have replaced them before in my sedan for the very same reason... the brackets gets UV damaged and starts to crack. If money is no object and the red seatbelt buttons are faded buy new front seat belt tensioners and new rear seat belt latches. They are all available. Big difference w/ new bright red buttons.

Using a 3M Wax wheel would make that glue removal job takes 10 seconds... You should give it a try, Matt. It`s just wax so it doesn't damage paint or anything, and removes badge glue or double side tape in seconds.

I don't care about repaint as long as it's done correctly. I can't stand people that are all about original paint and panels. No 24 yo car w/ any number of miles is going to have perfect paint. And would you rather have a bunch of freaking bondo but 'hey original panels'.. or replace the thing w/ OE part and get done right and document everything. No one could have taken care of their M3 as good as myself but it got to a point where the condition of the original paint after two decades of sun, car covers, washing, polishing, & coating was vastly inferior to the professional repaint.

As an E36 owner, the E36 is really one of the worst vehicles where you wanna be "obsessed" about the fit and finish of things. It's just not a very well built car from the factory. The motor and drivetrain is bulletproof but the interior and the trim pieces inside and out are made of biodegradeable materials that just fall apart.
