Rei W. The importance of diamond 💍 engagement, wedding 👰, and general rings is merely sociocultural. For whatever reason, “the powers that be” want members of society to value and purchase these diamonds 💎. Meanwhile, poor women and children 👶 in various parts of world are paid so little to mine them. Unlike the diamonds that they are forced to mine, the slave miners are undervalued.

The website even had a whole page explaining the difference from natural diamonds to lab diamonds. I'm really not sure what the poor website owners are expected to do other than have "it's not a natural diamond" flashing across the entire screen. It seems unfair to me. What the shop did wasn't good but the website has made it very clear from what this news clip shows.

As opposed to something more specific like “lab-grown/cultured/synthetic,” which means it’s a real diamond, but just man-made/process is artificial and sped up.

Actually, these stones aren’t cubic zirconia- literally diamond to the atomic construction. A few years ago someone in material science figure out how to “grow” genuine diamonds with miracle of modern technology and science. It’s atomically the same thing. There was an interesting documentary about the development of the technology- I think the inventor was a father son duo in Massachusetts. As the technology became perfected the diamond monopoly got scared and has been trying to control lab diamonds production by lobbying for special labels. The diamond industry has been a monopoly that capitalized on poor countries and labor that includes slaves and children. There is no way to guarantee ethical sourcing (and they’ve tried). The monopoly doesn’t want the price of diamonds to tank with the introduction of lab grown diamonds. Labs can make a nearly infinite supply of perfect large real diamonds. I’m sure the rich share holders of the media with millions invested on the diamond business is the reason why this story was told the way it was on a negative way towards lab diamonds instead of a focusing on business doing illegal practices and just how corrupted the diamond business is and how focused they are on that big profit they can make when selling YOU a diamond.

    Problems with diamond:
    - If it's natural, you're supporting a trade that is brimmed with slave labor and malpractices
    - If it's lab grown, you're paying for something at a ridiculous premium, simply because all the diamond labs were bought by natural diamond companies which fixed the prices, and you end up supporting the same companies at the end
    - Diamonds are not that rare, unlike gold and silver. To convince the average consumer into paying more is almost a crime. It's like calling aluminum "light silver" and charge 10 times the price. A diamond drill cost $1 because diamonds are that cheap to make.
    - Moissanite has almost the same thermal conductivity and hardness as diamond, at 1% of the cost. Is diamond 1000% more brilliant?
    - To pay thousands for a lab grown diamond vs moissanite is crazy as you're not paying for the story of some rock sitting in the earth for "millions of years" anymore. By the way, your granite kitchen countertop is 1.6 to 2.7 billion years old.
