Ohlala! The path from the Portillo Lake trail is something else.

Yes, it was crazy! Normally you don't have to do that waking at the beginning, though. I had skied Lake Run the day before and was able to traverse on skis. The sun just caused significant melt within a day.

I got the "100 ski slopes" book after watching you video. Book is really nice, thanks! I also watched your Zermatt video a few times before visiting over New Years. Very helpful. 👍

Thanks! Hope you get to check out some of those slopes. I'm having a hard time because sometimes when I go to a given resort, the slope is closed for whatever reason!

Speaking of Powder Bowl at Crystal Mountain.... Seriously, the best powder run of my life - and I've had many. I was there after a huge dump. It was a bluebird day and cold. It's a rare combo in the PNW. So I rode chair 6. I was probably 3rd or 4th chair. So for whatever reason, EVERYONE was going somewhere else. I couldn't figure it out. Was PB closed? Nope. So I just went in, and I was literally the first one in and the pow was billowing up over my head. It was unbelievable. I kept laughing, but had to be careful because I was choking on the snow. No exaggeration.
There are steeper and longer lines, btw, at Crystal, but PB is extremely aesthetic and the view of Mt. Rainier from the top has got to be seen to be believed.

You got the experience that made that slope a part of the book! Probably even better than that since you were first down after a huge dump. Envious!

    this was an awesome video...
how do you afford to do all this travelling?????

Thanks! Portillo was a killer in terms of expense. There are ways to keep them down for that resort, but I wanted to enjoy the full experience one time. Otherwise, keeping it affordable involves a lot of searching for the best deals, flying on miles, combining destinations into one trip (like one flight to the Pacific Northwest and hit Bachelor and Crystal on that trip, driving between the two with friends who live in the area), sharing costs with friends on trips, etc., have Epic and/or Ikon... It can be doable!

Are you on GS race skis in everything you ski?

Pretty much. Currently only have one pair of skis and for the past two years, I've rarely had anything other than sunny weather in spring skiing conditions. So the GS skis are perfect except for the times I go off the groomed slope. Will buy some new non-GS skis soon, but in the meantime, rent demos on days where I want a change.
