  • Hello everyone. Thank you for tuning into part 2 of the Living Treasures remodel here in Jones Mills, PA. I had such a blast redoing these enclosures; but they sure presented some challenges. With how the room was structured + positioning of the enclosures the Bio Dude was unable to utilize the background or front of the enclosure as anchors for any wood or plants; so all building and scaping had to be done via using the sides of the enclosures only. Ensuring that everything is in place, secure and fastened to prevent moving of the accents. Unfortunately Fed Ex lost half of our plants (WHAT A SURPRISE) but we still executed at an A+ level.
For the remodel the Bio Dude revamped the following:
x2 Poison Dart Frog enclosures - Seeded with BioShot, Dwarf White and purple isopods + springtails.
x1 Phelsuma Grandis enclosure - Seeded with BioShot, Powder Orange and Dwarf White Isopods + springtails
x1 Amazon milk frog enclosure - Seeded with BioShot, Powder Blue Isopods + springtails
x1 Massive Chinese Water Dragon Enclosure - Seeded with BioShot, Earwigs, Powder Blue + Orange Isopods, Dwarf White Isopods and springtails
x1 Chondro Python Enclosure (adult only) - Seeded with Bioshot, Powder Blue Isopods + springtails
The Chinese Water Dragon build was such a treat. Utilizing full mechanical, biological and chemical filtration we are happy to provide them a large, clean moving water source that also provides enough space for soaking and climbing without disrupting the filtration. The large trees and cork/branches are all secure in place to prevent collapses and to handle to weight of the lizards themselves. I hope this build gives you guys some ideas on how to provide large, clean water areas to your herps. Filtration is tough and can be daunting if you are inexperienced.
I hope you enjoyed this makeover and we cannot wait to go back in early 2022 to do the rest of the exhibits. Thank you Tom and the rest of the amazing Living Treasures staff for being so welcoming and providing the Bio Dude such an amazing opportunity.

I don't mean to be a know it all but the way you set up the pump and filter is terrible the tank is going to leak moisture through those bottom holes and that huge pump will become clogged very easily. Should have used bulkheads and a sump system.

@@RiddleMeThis169 Dont apologize, it was an astute observation. The kicker is making it very easy for the keepers and sumps are far from easy lol.

Love the video. A little disappointed with the size of the water dragons water pool. Asian water dragons enjoy being submerged in water and use it as a way to hide from preditors. Their old enclosure would have allowed the space for an large pond while this pool with hardly allow for them to sit in it with the pump in there....

While we wanted to do larger and provide a larger area the floor print of the enclosure did not allow it. They also found it imperative that the water area is just large enough that we can remove it completely to sanitize and disinfect without demolishing the entire enclosure. I do appreciate that observation and agree with you. Ideally we would want double the amount of water area, but it just was not possible with the layout of the enclosure.

Not to mention the fact that the entire front of the enclosure is made of glass.
Considering Chinese water dragons fail to conceive transparent barriers. That entire front display will be smeared in blood from the dragons rubbing their faces back and fourth. (Unless of course they kill each other fighting as two males will).
While I do agree it’s a beautiful setup. It is sad that this enclosure put aesthetics before the welfare and care requirements of the water dragons.

@@AlexsAgamids yeah I agree would be nice for some other lizard species it just shows that even bigger reptile keepers like zoos still need to do research every now and then I was going to mention what you have said but didn’t since I didn’t want to cause a scene 😂but totally agree with you

@@AlexsAgamids I will have to disagree with the last statement about husbandry vs. aesthetics. That is simply not true with the care, financials and time LT put into the rehab of these animals + their daily care.
I did make that observation and did relay that to them that there are in fact two males together and that it is not recommended. Both of them came from the same owner and same rescue situation and have been together for years. While it is still not recommend to keep them together the staff is trained and manages them daily to ensure they are watching for any issues from fighting or outcompeting.
As far as rubbing on the glass, I would love a recommendation for a commercial enclosure that does not have a glass front that is optimal for consumer viewing. While there is rub present, they have been in this enclosure for over 5 months and they have been thriving. To be fair they are wild animals and their replicated environment will never be perfect, the best we can do is attempt to replicate it as close as possible and to make them feel as home as possible. Large agamids truly are not good pets (for most people and facilities) and are even harder to successfully replicate in a captive environment. Their size, skittish nature, aggressiveness and husbandry requirement are very hard to accommodate for most business' and keepers. I do honestly feel that LT did a good job on most things and are actively taking our recommendations for future improvements.
Can ZOOs and other AZA facilities continue to learn and get better, they sure can; but it is not necessary to say "they put aesthetics over care" because that is simply not true.
Thank you for your great observations and support!

@@TheBioDudeJoshHalter Thank you for the reply.
I retract my previous statement after you have provided information regarding the situation regarding rehabilitation of the dragons as well as the nose rub.
As for a commercial enclosure option. I personally use Animal Plastics as I can have a huge viewing window with sliding doors. While having a solid two foot high substrate lip that prevents the dragons from seeing through a clear barrier at eye level. Since they spend 80% of their time on the branches, they can be viewed. Yet when they are on the ground, they cannot see out and therefore do not rub their noses.

@@AlexsAgamids for my dragon I have a cu Ron made wooden enclosure but when it’s on the ground the barrier is about a foot tall so can not see out of the enclosure as well as for the viewing material I use plexus glass so if the dragon does jump at the glass it won’t hurt as much as glass.

I'm setting up my first dart frog enclosures and wondered why you didn't use fabric between the drainage and substrate layers like in pervious builds? I just want to make sure I set it up right the first time.

Josh has mentioned it in other videos, but Hydrogrow creates a flat top surface so less soil is able to seep through the drainage layer. Hydrogrow can be used with or without a screen divider. I personally would use a divider to keep it cleaner.
