I was looking to see who got it. N thanks.
Man I always say Joe Louis before Ali and after Johnson had COURAGE and very thick skin. The only reason the boxing committee allowed him to be a black HW champion at the time is because it was right before WW2 happened and the champion at the time was German Max Schmeling, who was personally endorsed by Adolf Hitler at the time. They didn’t want the championship of the world on a German as tensions were building for the war between Germany and America, so they built Joe back up for the second fight(as he lost the first one to Max by stoppage) and gave him crazy press and propaganda before the fight. I personally feel it is THE greatest pressure fight in all of boxing history and Joe finished Max w/in a round. He was a national hero for a little bit but at the end of the day he was still just a black man to them. They gave him personal rules he had to follow in order to keep the championship which is why he was always so soft spoken and quiet w/few words to the press. They didn’t allow him to celebrate a victory, he had to address every promoter/manager as sir & he could NEVER take pictures w/white women or sign their autographs… cold world and history. Even before us being American as seen throughout the entire world in America were only seen by color first before gender
Max Schmelling was not the champion at the time. He lost the belt to Jack Sharkey in 1932 and didn't fight Louis until 1938 when he knocked him out. The boxing commission had a choice between giving him a title shot and risk the Germans keeping the belt out of American hands, or letting a black man (Joe Louis) have a shot. Everything else you said is spot on, but it's also worth noting that in order to get the title shot, Louis had to sign 10% of every purse he made for the remainder of his career to James Braddock, the champion at the time. The man really got the shit end of every stick.
And to think Schmelling then took care of him financially in his later life even paid for his funeral I believe, Louis was royally shafted by the USA government and he never spoke bad of them , proper gentleman

He’s already trained to give press conference answers. Dude is showing no personality nor decisiveness in this interview at all.
Joe luis A great man
How can you speak to someone like that
In the old days, sports commentators often referred to grown men as "boys" regardless of race. I was watching the 1969 men's Wimbledon final and the announcers kept referring to Rod Laver and John Newcombe as boys. Laver was 31 at the time. They were both as white as ivory..
Джо

Sooo...I hope others can now appreciate that fact that Joe's "Bum of the Month" club was a derogatory term used to try and bring him down, etc., just like how we here see the commentator's disrespect.
Many of those fighters were not bums actually, and it was just as much an insult to them as it was to Joe himself.
He is even more modest than a common person 😐
John roxborough was my great grandfather
The patronizing dialogue was overdubbed. The fact that they felt the need to add the voiceover is so pathetic.
I hope they actually showed him respect face-to-face.
This is disgraceful. Joe was a class act among heathens.
So racist
It is the 1940s and he was a black man
He was mixed.
Joe Louis had as much mental toughness as he had physical. It takes real inner strength not to react to that type of conversation. It probably had a lot to do with Jack Johnson.
Imagine what this man could have accomplished in a time when the deck wasn’t stacked against him because of the color of his skin.
Very interesting. It makes me like and appreciate him the way things are their. No arena named after the guy questioning.
