What was it about soaps back then that the writing was just excellent? Why then? Why not now? Today's soaps, like Y&R are written as if they expect to fail. In 1991 soaps were written like everything was possible and that the sky was the limit.
They shouldn't have brought Sarah back without Jensen Buchanan playing her. The recast didn't cut it, and she was killed off a short time later. It was a waste of a storyline, but OLTL had a history of doing that sort of thing. Another example was bringing Victor Lord back for a short (and ridiculous) story arc, wiping out YEARS of history.
I agree. I think they meant well, and this made for an interesting (and heart-breaking scene for Cassie) but this wasn't the same without Jensen Buchanan. It was even hard watching people who were so glad to see Sarah and give her a hug, because it wasn't the Sara we knew!
Same with General Hospital..with the whole Jason and then nu-Jason (with Billy Miller - r.i.p. , who was awesome ) - then brought old Jason back and wiped away everything Billy Miller did. Ended up killing him off again.
SOAPUNK, AMEN TO THAT! It was the last time OLTL truly knocked me on my ass. SO thankful to see these episodes again. I had no idea that anyone had them! And the show looked great. I remember SOD reviewing OLTL at the time and saying this episode was a real turning point for OLTL and the show had turned into a class act.
LOL Sorry, in the recent decade I realized how overrated the Malone/Gottlieb years were- BUT THIS EPISODE WAS INSANELY GOOD!!!! And yes, if original Dorian was back, and Jensen Buchanan- It would have been perfect. I am all about those 85-89 Paul Rauch years@@MrCraigblaze
@@upontheventuraSo true. Malone and Gottlieb should have studied those years from 85-89 and looked at what made the show so successful and built upon that foundation. From what I heard Jensen Buchanan wanted to come back and they refused. They wanted to do things their way, regardless of what fans wanted.
@@MRInvincible569Agree!!! And without knowing it, they briefly recreated the Rauch era- Rauch 2.0 with these episodes. It was a shocker too. And Alex's breakdown with Cassie- was pure Rauch era GOLD. Sarah returning from the dead AT the wedding? I mean, it was GREAT. Jensen Buchanan would have made it 1000 times more impactful. The show never lived up to this great beginnning. It was intelligent writing and beautiful production with really boring stories and WAY too many DUD characters.
Nice to see the show Recasted Sarah . When Jensen Buchanan left the show to go over to Another world to play Victoria /Marley in 1991. Thanks for the upload !! Elaine P. Is still playing Dorian !!
@BethHarmon-uv7tl Grace Phillips wasn't the problem, the writing was. No actress could have overcome the reinvention constraints being put on Sarah as a character.
Just 75% of the time, as I recall. Tough, teary scripts demand crying on cue. Cassie with Andrew was like a last resort match but it became a likeable storyline.
@@ladylibertywdc8324 Laura Bonnarigo's Cassie lost her backbone until she was made an investigative journalist (the two previous Cassie's were always "investigating" & finding trouble), and paired with Kevin Stapleton as Kevin - shortly after Malone had left as head writer. Jensen Buchanan asked to return as Sarah, but was told a very firm no. This Sarah just didn’t work out and she was firmly killed off soon thereafter....
@@craigparkos381 Travis is mostly right, though his take on Grace Phillips as a recast is an over-simplification: Jensen met with then-EP Linda Gottlieb, who was completely new to soaps, before joining Another World. Linda didn't know who Jensen was, at that point barely knew the character of Sarah, and neither one was too impressed with the other. It wasn't a "firm" no, but it definitely wasn't a connection... Grace Phillips was very well-liked by her co-stars, especially Bob Woods & Jessica Tuck, and they all felt there was as instant rapport - and one with more of a depth than previously - that they'd play on-screen. As a viewer, I could see that. But Woods, and by extension Phillips, both had issues with the way their characters were being written. BW complained that while Bo would treat Cassie with respect, he would not choose her over Sarah (which is what the storyline did). As well, both Woods and Phillips - who was going by fan feedback and previous story - lobbied Gottlieb & Malone to let Sarah be stronger: She is a rape survivor who never used Bo, or any man, as a crutch. Gottlieb wasn't game for criticism, and - as we'd later learn - would stick it right back to someone who crossed her. She gave BW what he wanted - with a catch. She claimed Grace wasn't right for this "stronger" idea of Sarah, so they'd need a new actress. She wrote Sarah out of Llanview, and announced she'd be recast. Frustrated & upset that GP became a casualty, and concerned how this would disrupt fans, BW urged LG to reconsider this direction. LG would not budge on firing GP, so he said let's just move on from Sarah. At BW's asking, GP agreed to return for three episodes to wrap up their story together. That's how it went down.
People says that this one of the worst recast. But the worst is David Furmer coming on has bad recast for Cristian who first aired after Rachael Gannon revealed to be Georgie murder the summer of 1998 after the fired the original the 1997 or early 1998 played by a a better Cristian who last aired January 1998.
People? I don't think there's any overwhelmingly negative perception of Grace Phillips as Sarah. Krista Tesreau as Tina maybe, but Sarah's problems here had more to do with Michael Malone completely reconceiving the character as some romanticized take on a fragile damsel.
I felt bad for Cassie, but she & Bo were never a great match.
