    “Sequel fatigue is a myth.”
    - Also this guy: KFP 4 is a masterpiece.
As much as I’m looking forward to Shrek 5, I can’t help but feel cautious about labeling it as the masterpiece we hope it will be. Sequel fatigue is definitely not a myth, and the Ice Age series is a perfect example of that. The first film was a delightful gem, blending fun with a surprisingly accurate portrayal of its setting. However, as the sequels rolled out, they often opted for loud, slapstick comedy rather than meaningful storytelling.
While it’s true that Ice Age wasn’t made by DreamWorks, it highlights a reality that’s worth considering: not every sequel hits the mark. Despite what you say, I don’t think KFP 4 stands up either. Much like the Ice Age sequels, it prioritizes humor and gags over deep, emotional narratives and features a villain that feels pretty forgettable with a flimsy backstory.
And let’s not forget, the creative minds behind Puss in Boots: The Last Wish won’t be at the helm for Shrek 5. That’s a significant factor to keep in mind. So while I’m genuinely excited for this new installment, I think it’s prudent not to get too carried away with our expectations. As a huge fan of Shrek, I want it to shine, but I also know that great writing is essential!

  • @aarspi

From what I heard the team that worked on Puss in Boots 2 is working on Shrek 5, and that gives me hope.
Cause after the mismanagement of Megamind and Kung Fu Panda 4, if they have the right people working on the movie and care about the IP, then you’ll make money. A lot of sequels just haven’t done that, assuming that the novelty of “nostalgia” with make them money no matter what.
The only reason I can be open to sequels like Frozen 3, Toy Story 5, etc, is that it’s the franchise’s chance to FIX things. You can’t look at how much money it made, because how it made people feel after wasn’t good. People weren’t happy by the writing and didn’t care about the IP. If they’re making a new movie for that franchise, I see it as their way to course correct.

  • @stuartdenton8537

I respect most of your arguments, but I've got a couple of major disagreements. Sequels making big numbers opening weekend isn't proof that they're good, but proof that people loved the first one and are buying tickets for the second based on the good will of the first. You list Finding Dory doing better than Nemo, despite being objectively worse (I hate it). Look at all the money people spent on the Disney live action remakes only to be given an inferior product. It's the same mechanism.
I've also gotta point out that Dune 2 is the second part of a multi-film story, it's not a sequel and therefore doesn't count. It's like calling The Two Towers the sequel to The Fellowship of The Ring, when it's one single LOTR story in three parts.
I do genuinely feel the sequel fatigue. I heard about Shrek 5 and just sighed. Some of the new ideas have flopped as you've rightly pointed out, so they've had to resort to a worn out IP hoping to bring in money. I see sequels as an admission of failure, rather than a positive action of choosing more of something people like. People are gonna see Shrek 5 for the novelty, like they went to see Jurassic World. It'll probably follow the same formula of painting its own homage to the first Shrek. I bet 100 internet points the film involves some kind of flashback to scenes from the first film. "You remember when Shrek lived alone in the swamp? Here it is again. We're gonna tell you the story of how Fiona got cursed, so we can revisit her changing form again. Let's show you how annoying Donkey was when he first started speaking" Your same out-of-ideas writing, but just putting the final nail in a franchise that should've stayed as two films.

  • @avivbikel8671

Inside out 2 is both anticipated nostalgia, builds upon the first, deep, funny and very smart much like Shrek 2 so people go see it multiple times. Kung fu Panda for instance doesn't build upon the base that was left, has worse production values, loses it's core cast and plays mostly on just nostalgia and by reducing the inflation it would have made about 300M. That was also a movie I hoped that would break the Billion dollar mark if it was done as good as the 2nd movie or as amazingly as Puss in boots TLW. Shrek now is a mystery which I can't predict it's direction since it can either be a masterpiece or be rather bland with half forced humor and no agency(also like despicable me 4) so I'm just cautiously optimistic.

As for the plot, I think it should be about Shrek reconciling with his parents, especially his father with what he told Arthur. I mean what else can he do? He found friends, has a loving wife and wonderful kids, and he’s able to comprehend how much it all means to him. At this point there’s no where else to go for him but back. There are times where the past needs to be revisited to keep going forward so this may be just that. Plus, how cool would it be to see Shrek’s origin story? Or baby Shrek of all things?

Well we’re talking about Shrek breaking peace with his past/parents so maybe the next villains should tie back to these themes. Like the parents of Hansel and Gretel and the witch who tries to eat them, or the evil queen from Snow White, or Cinderella’s stepmother. Could be either one of them but I think the witch from Hansel and Gretel would be the most entertaining to see.

This is probably an unpopular opinion but I PRAY they keep up the old animation style and don't completely revamp it like they did with Puss in boots 2. Don't get me wrong, it absolutely worked for that movie, but the often bright and flashy visuals and polished models just... wouldn't fit with the main shrek franchise. The visuals shrek had worked perfectly for its setting, and imo they still hold up extremely well today. Rewatching the old movies and then seeing the new one in a different style would be very jarring

I don't want million sequels to tell me about their children and grandchildren and great grandchildren. And I bet you that's what's gonna happen to this franchise, like it did with dozens before this one.
I bet they are going to make Shrek's children teenagers, i bet Shrek will become overprotective father, especially to his daughter. I bet they'll be some romance drama with kids. And I bet it will not be what Shrek is supposed to be, and instead will turn into one more Shrek the third.
All stories must have an end, otherwise they become boring. Otherwise they become fast and furious franchise

I agree with a lot of your views. We have seen how animated studios have lost a LOT of money in recent years. Original movies have little to no chance at being a box office success if they do not get great reviews or anything and even then several movies struggle. The Bad Guys grossed 250 and TMNT: Mutant Mayhem grossed 180. Both movies were commercial success based on their budget but still they received great critic reviews but even then people did not go to watch them and they deserved more.
Then of course we have disney and pixar with strange world, wish and lightyear. turning red. Even DreamWorks faced one of their biggest flops with Ruby Gillman which I haven't watched but I heard its decent and underrated. Pixar turned to Inside Out and the sequel became the Highest Grossing Pixar Movie !!!! Disney has turned to Zootopia, Moana, Frozen and Lion King and atleast "some" of these movies deserved sequels. Its no wonder that franchises will be revived because people do not go to watch original movies even if they are critically acclaimed. A lot of people overlook the financial apparatus of filmmaking.
DreamWorks turned to Kung Fu Panda and it was originally planned to have 6 films. I am one of the defenders of KFP4 and it did break a lot of DreamWorks records. But Shrek is on a whole new level with box office gross. Then Shrek 4 was a great movie but several people want Shrek 5. I am excited but cautiously optimistic.
The screenwriter and director have decent records. Walter Dohrn was head of story of Shrek 4 and actor of Rumpel. He directed Trolls World Tour and Band Together. Casual DreamWorks fans say that the Trolls movies are just silly candy coloured movies but they have themes and engaging characters. I belong in the minority because I think the original Trolls movie was better than 2 and 3 but still they are pretty good movies.

Did we NEED a Shrek 5 to begin with? Lmao thats what we should be asking. Not whether or not it could be GOOD. lmao
Maybe if we were still in that Puss n Boots Last Wish high, I would agree with you. 🫠
