You can absolutely use a foil quill with the explore one machines that have one adapter. all you need to do is remove the pen or blade and put the quill nib in without an adapter. Fits perfectly
Thanks so much for this informative video. I have a Silhouette so hope it works the same. Only one adapter too so will certainly give it a go. Many thanks.
It should work the same for you in the Silhouette. I hope you’ll check out the magnetic mat demo I did. Works so much quicker than messing with the tape. Janet
it makes sense that it would work better on smooth surfaces than on those with textures or a nap. The foil would get caught in and around the texture and not be as noticeable to the naked eye. I wonder how it would work with more than one layer though as the first one would lay down the smooth foundation for the others to catch on to.
I looked at Cricut’s felt this weekend and I really think it would work well on it. It’s very dense and stiff. The felt I used was not dense at all. If the pattern was placed low on the mat, you could put a new piece of foil down and do it again. It starts getting expensive that way depending on the size though. I was very happy with the textured faux leather and foam. If the fine tip was used, the line thickness would be less thick but personally, I like the more bold look. The bold tip really didn’t seem much different on paper than the medium tip but the fine is really much thinner than the medium or bold tips. Hope my observations help you. Janet
Thank you! I was in shock about the fun foam too. Someone at work suggested it and I poo poo'd it but thought it wouldn't hurt to try it. I was convinced it would never work. Not only did it work but it looked positively great! Just shows I don't know as much as I think I do sometimes. I was thrilled to see the acetate success too. I know I'll be putting that ability to use! Hugs, Janet
I have been using the quill pen to foil napkins. It works great but sometimes can be hit or miss (foil rips through and rips napkins. Still trying to figure it all out. So far I have made 160 napkins with 40 more to go.
Thank you so much for the information regarding the Air 1 (not sure of the actual name) in addition to the materials tests. I so appreciate and love the ribbon idea as well as the acetate. Best wishes to you and yours from Des Moines, Iowa.
Use an infill on material like the burlap to give it a darker look. Or use thicker lines in your design for the burlap material. That should make it easier to see your foiled designs. I use flexible printable magnetic sheets. That would be worth testing. Also on laminated items like with cold press and hot press lamination sheets, rolls (Xyron), pouches of different thicknesses. This could be a cool way to add some flair to things that are already laminated as well as some security features for trade shows, festivals, craft shows, concerts, or smaller events like parties, weddings, school fund raisers, window clings, overhead transparencies, etc Would glass sheeting be too thick or fragile to run through the four types of machines this is made for?
Great tips and love the idea of flexible magnetic sheets. Would need to test if there’s enough tooth on it to get good adhesion. Your thoughts on burlap and other materials are great also. Glass sheeting would handle the pressure but it would need to be thin. You can engrave on thin plastic pieces so glass should be the same. Each machine has a thickness maximum so would need to stay under that thickness. However, I kind of doubt the foil would stick well to a slick glass surface. It needs something with some tooth to work well. Hope that’s helpful to you. Thanks for stoping by and asking good questions and offering intriguing suggestions! Janet
Thanks for sharing this video. It certainly was interesting to see the different material types the Foil Quill works on. One question - in your experiments you only used the medium tip. What if you used the fine tip for the softer materials (felt and leather)?
The finer tip would get a thinner line, I’m sure. With these different materials, I think you just have to try because I really didn’t think several items would work well and I was wrong. The ribbon was very surprising to me for one. It seems there’s little it won’t work on.
Thank you for showing us how the foil looked on different surfaces. Have you used the magnetic mat? I wonder if there is a difference if you use it or just the mat. Does the tip work differently on the harder surface of the magnetic mat compared to softer regular mat? Would like to know what outcome your readers have had.
I have a review on it. But generally I don’t see any great difference in foil quality either way. It’s a lot more convenient to use the magnetic mat though. Thanks for the question and here’s the link to the review and demo. Foil Quill MAGNETIC MAT - Demo, Tips & Review ruclips.net/video/NXP-p-Fx8g8/видео.html
My machine has only 1 holder and the Quill pens work on my machine. I have the Original Silhouette cameo and it only has 1 holder, so I guess maybe that problem is only on certain brand machines??? Cool idea foiling ribbon. Love how the foiling looks on the acetate. Tfs
Hi there! I should have been more clear. The viewer said that the Cricut Explore machines with only one holder won’t work with the Foil Quill. The Silhouette and Brother machines with one holder should work fine, just like you’ve experienced.
This was great.. FYI..Nancy Stamps does a video that shows how it works with other foils ..,,not that you couldn’t do an additional video..., which I’m sure people would love to see..... I don’t think you both have the same machine TFS all the info!
On the thicker, softer materials that produced the wider lines, maybe try the fine tip. Theoretically, I think as the pressure is applied to the tip, the softer material “Folds” up around the tip and is being heated and adhered by the sides of the nib. Maybe a finer tip would limit this a bit. i.e. the finer tip on a thicker, softer material might produce a medium line much like the medium tip on paper. I think I am explaining it the way it is going through my head!
Yes. I thought the same. I may try the pattern with some of the softest material and the fine nib as an update in a future video. But yes, your theory is the same as mine. I would be interesting to try the thick nib for writing on soft materials. That might produce an awesome look. In most cases I personally liked the thicker line but that is totally individual preference.
What do you use to hold the foil quill if you don’t mind sharing? I have a portrait 2 and was wondering how to use the foil quill if I purchase it ? Would really appreciate your tips and tricks🙏🏼
I have but have been really swamped with life and haven’t finished my testing. Stay tuned. I’m traveling for work so I’ll be posting again the week of May 7th.
I didn’t change any settings. It’s the default for pens. So stinking easy to make it work. My unboxing video shows how I set it up if you haven’t seen it. I did exactly the same steps as in that video, just with different materials other than paper.
I haven’t washed it but I don’t think it would hold up. You could spot clean but machine washing would surely degrade the image. Thanks for watching and commenting. 🥰
That seems likely. I envisioned a throw pillow maybe that you couldn’t wash but even then, it might wear off. I like the ribbon idea best for fabric-like materials. It was fun to try a bunch of different things though. 😀
Thanks for being our official tester ! Will definitely try out these materials which I never thought I could foil ! Merci !
Thank you! Cheers! Janet

Thank you for clearing that up! I was about to panic.
Yes you can use it with one holder. Seen lots of videos showing this. Great testing thank you
Thanks for watching and I appreciate you sharing the information about one holder! Janet

So helpful! I particularly love the vellum and acetate results. Thank you so much.
What exciting results! There are so many options for this amazing tool! Great job Janet! Thank you for all the tests on so many materials. Hugs~Elaine
Thank you my friend! I am grateful for your support. Hugs, Janet
Oh my Goodness. They need to pay you because you have just totally sold me on this foil quill pen. Awesome.
Agreed!!!!
Omg this is an amazing video! Wowzers . Yes this makes me want the foil quill. Wishing you a super week. Hugs Susan
Thanks for the video. Try the bold tip on the burlap.

Excellent video!! Looking forward to the different types of foil test along with the brother scan and cut with stamps videos.
This was a great video. Can’t believe the acetate and fun foam!!

Wow! I wish I could see them. You must be doing it for a special occasion. With only 40 to go, you’re going to get there!

great video, thanks it is very informative and easy to watch. Thanks much, Happy Easter!
Great review. My quill is on order.
Thank you so much. This was so helpful.
So glad to hear it! Thank you. Janet

Can’t wait for your review for other foils.
The video is up!i hope you’ll check it out.
Great video :) thank you for doing that for us :) looove that it worked on fabric :)

SugarShine Designs So will it work with the silhouette portrait 2 ???btw great great video !!!!
Human Tales I’m sorry for being unclear. The one holder limitation applied to Cricut machines only. Silhouette and Brother works just fine.
Fabric that’s awesome to know thanks so much❤️
Thank you for the information I've looked at the paper but never understood it thank you again
This is awesome. Thank you!
Thank you for that nice feedback! I am always excited to hear when something I've done helps someone. :) Janet
Great video. Thanks for sharing.

Agree that there is a fair bit out there on other foils. I’ll show it but it’ll be a quick one. I’ll look for Nancy Stamps. Thanks much! Janet

On the Faux Leather maybe less pressure?
Awesome presentation. I haven’t tried mine yet and now I can’t wait.
Thanks. This was a great help👍😊
really need to know if it works with other types of foils also?
Thanks for the fabulous review. Your video has helped me decide to invest in this product. I'd love to hear about the different foils.
It works on fabric, but how would it hold up in the wash? (thank you for making this video, I've been thinking of buying one)
I’ll throw the fabric sample in a load and see what happens!
what happened? :)
Can you show a video of the difference of thickness of the 3 pens?
Go to this video. Here I show the differences between the three nibs. Thanks much! ruclips.net/video/-bge6fGxyfw/видео.html
Thank you that's just what I wanted to see.
I have the explore one machine and it works, I just don’t use the adapter
Good to know. I’ll share that in the next video. Thank you!!
What do you use to hold the foil quill if you don’t mind sharing? I have a portrait 2 and was wondering how to use the foil quill if I purchase it ? Would really appreciate your tips and tricks🙏🏼
Thank you for this video tip! Question for you: have you tried using different foil sheet brands to use other than the foil quill brand?
I have but have been really swamped with life and haven’t finished my testing. Stay tuned. I’m traveling for work so I’ll be posting again the week of May 7th.
@@SugarShineDesigns Totally understand 👌🏽 Looking forward to your video post updates.😉
Thanks so much for the vid.
You are so welcome! Thanks for commenting. I hope you'll be back. :) Janet
Do you change the pressure on the different materials? What setting do you use?
I didn’t change any settings. It’s the default for pens. So stinking easy to make it work. My unboxing video shows how I set it up if you haven’t seen it. I did exactly the same steps as in that video, just with different materials other than paper.
Black foil on the burlap would probably work. My black foil is on its way from Amazon.
2legit64 Let us know if it works! Thanks for watching. 😀
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you. 🙂
How did you do the ribbon? Did you use the Cricut?
Yes, i just stuck the ribbon to the mat and used the foil quill over the top worked beautifully!
I wish you would have tried a piece of genuine leather
I’m sorry about that. I e heard from others that it dies work but it can’t take a lot of wear as it’ll run off.
How does it hold up to wear and washing?
I haven’t washed it but I don’t think it would hold up. You could spot clean but machine washing would surely degrade the image. Thanks for watching and commenting. 🥰
SugarShine Designs enjoyed it! Thanks for answering my question.
Great video! Thank you so much for experimenting and sharing your results! How likely do you think it is that Cricut will sue over this?
I am starting to think it’s going to be ok. If they are fighting, it’s being done quietly.
Oh please please please show how to do this with the brother.
I will! Thanks pea!
Fabric on another persons video it scratched right off so beware it is most likely not going to stay unless protected
That seems likely. I envisioned a throw pillow maybe that you couldn’t wash but even then, it might wear off. I like the ribbon idea best for fabric-like materials. It was fun to try a bunch of different things though. 😀
