This is a great review video!! Congratulations! And i do have to admit that the fit and finish, body pieces alignment issues, and pain details are a very very very bad no no for a brand new car. All the information I have seen says that those issues are largely absent on the Model 3 cars coming out of Gigafactory Shanghai. Hmmm.... Is it possible there might be problems with the workforce available and the regulatory environment in California?
Hi Ryan, I have a X-P90D for 2 1/2 years now and I’ve put 110,000 miles on it. I found that driving 60 to 110 miles between charges, only charging for a maximum of 10 to 20 minutes is quicker then sitting in a charging space for maybe 45 up to 60 minutes. I don’t charge to 100% (usually a maximum of 90%) and only deplete it to about 10 to 20%. It will be better for your battery in the long run with short charging sessions and makes your drive shorter in time overall. And congratulations on your marriage!
Very well done. Anyone who wants to know about this car will find it here. They might have to listen to your video twice, because there’s so much in it, but that’s no problem
“I haven’t listen to Kanye West in a few months. I don’t know why he is still there?!” We all have the same question as well. Kanye works in mysterious ways.
Great comments! Thanks. Great point about seeing only the tips of cars out in the mirror, the tops being farther away than their front bumpers! “Up to 250KW per hour” (time index 22:12): Just make sure nobody’s confused, what he meant to say was “up to 250 kilowatt-hours per hour,” or more simply, “up to 250 kilowatts.”
1. Unlocking: hold the door handle in the open position and keep holding it open, it will eventually respond - takes even longer if the car is asleep. If too long for you, buy the key - way better - definitely worth it after purchasing it. 2. Wrapping the center console is fine and I did it before...the carbon fiber in matte (fake plastic) was offered by rpm telsa. Way nicer and more robust - worth the $80.
Great video!!! I’ve been waiting for someone to do a video that I can share with people who have no Tesla knowledge that is current. Congrats on your beautiful ride sir! Drummer here who is excited to get a drummer model y experience video. Great job sir!
I don't have a Tesla yet, still waiting on my 7 seater Model Y, so I've seen every single Tesla video there is. I've got to say, even though I already knew most of what you said already, your video was very well put together. Excellent video clips, clear descriptions, and even some details that weren't obvious in other videos. Almost like it could be an official Tesla overview video. Thumbs up.
Tesla was too late in the market for me, I ended up buying a Leaf when they first came out in 2011. Never had any issues with it and your statement about maintenance cost being low is so true. Over the nine years of ownership I've spent around $500 total for maintenance (replace accessory battery, key fob battery, and the stupid environment filter). Car is still going strong and hoping to get 20 years out of my battery.
I've been on the fence about a 3 and now the Y. Watched pretty much every video, and yours is on the podium for best objective info! I think the paint and panel gaps would be too much for my OCD nature, ha. Again, thanks for your hard work in helping make a big decision.
I retired from BMW and have driven them for 20 years now. I love the heads up display in the windshield in front of you. It was distracting at first but I easily got over that. I guess like you said it would be easy to adjust looking to the right for the display.
This is such a good review. Tesla makes great products and most that actually own them realize the good far outweighs their flaws. A fair review, like you provided, will touch on both. Unfortunately early builds of Tesla products still appear to come with more issues. These will be ironed out for the most part but I really hope Tesla can step up their quality control in general because their vehicles are amazing otherwise and so many people use these flaws to dismiss an otherwise industry-leading product.
We test drove it too. They usually have you test drive the upgraded version. So be careful about that if you're looking at their basic model ie long range not performance
I've got the Model3 Performance - In the past I've had a '63 split window, Porsche 911, Morgan, Jaguar, Bentley and others. I loved them all but this is the best by far!
I really want to love this car, I really do - but those finishing issues with the tacky poor interior, paint work issues and the body panels not fitting correctly just ruin the whole thing for me- once tesla bring the finish quality of their products up to the standards of say a BMW or a Mercedes, then it’s a no brainer, I would buy one in a heartbeat. By the way this is a very good review - thank you.
@@Oncewaslostbutnowimsaved Disagree, its things Tesla will fix and have in so many cases. Check ANY car anywhere and they have little detail issues such as these, you may not see them because the cars sit at the dealership for extended periods of time.
An excellent review, thank you! Pedant alert! 22:12, 250 kW is 250 kW whether you plug it in for an hour or 10 minutes because kW specifies a rate. Battery capacity and storage are measured in kWh (kilowatt hours): how many hours of charge are available if used at a rate of 1 kW.
@@TacoMonster4eva There are two reasons why they didn't put a heads up display. First is for complexity and production cost, which reflects on assembly time and profit margins. Second is for autonomy, meaning that the heads-up display becomes pointless for most of the lifetime of the car to anyone who purchased full self-driving. The model 3 isn't the only car with a central speedometer and it's close enough to the line of sight that most people get used to it pretty quickly.
@R Although Teslas are subject to some valid criticism, the negatives I usually keep seeing goes from distorted truths blown out of proportion or out of context to pure bullshit. Every dip and rebound on the stock value is money being made from stock manipulation since its behavior can be easily played with and predicted. A text conversation between an employee whistleblower and an important reporter from MSNBC paying him to spread lies, reporter that received a large amount of money to do so, is only the tip of the iceberg on money going around shaming Tesla and Elon. Truth is the pros of owning a Tesla greatly outweigh the cons and a lot of revenues from powerful corporations are at stake. Tons of people have been indoctrinated to respond with hatred to anyone who is saying anything positive about Elon Musk and his companies. Take a good look at where your preconceived notions come from. Don't buy into the bullshit and fact check from independent sources.
My wife has a Model 3 and we both LOVE driving it. My range anxiety only lasted a few days. We have made several long trips (800 miles and 1500 miles) with zero problems charging along the way. I would prefer the Y for practicality, but the 3 definitely looks better.
Thank you for the good review. I love Tesla and their mission statement and admire them so much, I just wish those noises are not there, I know they will drive me crazy. Maybe I should put my order on hold...
The use of onboard cameras as dash/guard cams is such a no-brainer its one of those things that almost mystifies you why Tesla is the first/only company to be doing that. The integration of being able to quickly view the clips on the built-in screen (or save a clip with a honk!) is great too, really smart user -friendly thinking.
Awesome video. I am an EV rookie, and even though I have owned 54 gasoline cars, I am an old guy now who is VERY INTERESTER in the new technology. You answered so many of my questions. Thank you and Congratulations on your wedding. (Right now I am driving a 1998 Buick LeSabre that looks like a brand new one. I have been driving it for 13 years, but if I could afford a Tesla, I would trade tomorrow)
Latest long travel i did - I did around 450 km, in one sweep (no stop) and used around 1/3 of my fuel capacity. During long trips i can drive 1.000-1.200 km on one fueling. And i can stop and rest wherever i want and i'm not tied to stop at (boring) charge stations. And i can take 2.2000 kg on my hitch. So, well, battery is a good thing for short distance but not for longer distance, and during all that time you use it for short distance, you have a LOT of extra weight that will cause wear on roads, tires and the car itself. So as always, everything has it's good sides and bad sides.
Mindle I put my deposit for the R1S this past Fri. 😀. If it was for Rivian coming out, I would probably purchase the Y. The Audi eTron Quattro looks like a good contender too. Wish there were more choices out already.
Yeah the big reason I think rivian is a better choice is because their skateboard platform has 190 kwh as opposed to tesla's 100. They use a different battery architecture to do it, which will undoubtedly make their batteries harder to cool, but when you're going off-roading, more power is absolutely necessary (see engineering explained's video on towing with an electric vehicle). You can make the car as efficient as you want, but ultimately, more power = more gravitational energy you can overcome. That's just thermodynamics. And besides, supporting Tesla's competitors will force them to innovate more. A monopoly is never a good thing.

Nice review. I prefer reviews based on months (rather than days or even hours) of ownership. I hate those Amazon reviews where the person just opened the box fifteen minutes ago and it's the greatest thing they've ever bought. Does the keycard work while in your wallet, or do you have to take the card out? I am much more likely to forget my phone than my wallet, so unless the door unlocking with the app becomes flawless, I think I'd rely on the card and use the app as the backup, rather than the other way around. If they're going to insist on having virtually no physical controls, they really have to get the voice controls to work perfectly, and it has to be smart enough to interpret multiple commands to perform the same task. I fiddle with my climate control a lot, especially in cold weather where I have to defrost at first, then blast the heat to warm the cabin, then turn it down to get comfortable. Poking around on a touch screen while driving is out of the question, so the voice controls need to be intuitive and flawless. In my car (2007 Honda CRV) voice control is worthless if I'm driving with the windows open, and even when closed it's hard if other people in the car are talking. How reliable is your voice control under those conditions? By the way, feel free to include more smooching in your videos. That was very sweet.
Yeah same here. The key has to be out of the wallet in my experience like a hotel room key. And yeah. The vice controls are good, but not perfect and I hope they continue to improve them. I haven’t tried voice controls with the windows down, what mph are you typically driving at with the windows down? I’ll have to test it some time. And thanks! Haha :)
I have a M3 for 17 months now...I put my keycard in the outer-most section of wallet (where no money is because I gotz car payments man!). It works through that single layer of leather and is my backup in case my S9 phone dies (has happened a few times playing pokemon too zealously). I used to leave home occasionally forgetting wallet but getting better now at always checking for my backup key holder. Now with the homelink on garage door setup in the car I actually stopped carrying sharp pieces of jangly metals in my pockets everywhere. I only grab those if going out the door on foot now for exercise (again...phone could open garage from outside via model 3, unless it dies on my walk)
Ryan, solid review. The Model 3 and Model Y respond to a bluetooth signal from your phone (the S and X key fobs use RFID). Apple iPhones lower bluetooth when the phone is asleep (display not turned on). Simply activate your phone (display on) before using the door handle. I had the same problem on my 3- but it just requires "waking" your phone, no need to use the Tesla app. Also on the fit and finish issues: Unfortunately the pattern is frequent with early releases of each Tesla model. To Tesla's credit, these issues virtually disappear after 6-8 months of production. My 3 is virtually flawless. I worked at Tesla and saw some of the early issues with the 3 and the S and X.
Really appreciate your videos! I love my MY! I haven't had as many issues as others. I am very happy with how it turned out and how quick I got mine. Picked up 3/28 in KC. I enjoy giving rides to family and friends that have never experienced being in a Tesla. They all understand the hype now.
Thank you Ryan I should take delivery of my model Y this week . I ordered the duel motor long range , white and really no other special options. I cannot wait !
Ordered mine Feb 7, 2020 and just received an email saying they’ll contact me soon with available delivery dates. My problem is that I **want** a contact delivery (ie with a delivery person) to make sure someone documents all the issues I may find. Contactless scares me b/c issues may fall through the legendary crack. Already got my list of things to look for (gathered via countless YT videos.)
Just take pics of odometer and all blemishes you find on delivery day (with date/time stamps). If something is not within specs, Tesla will fix it. A Tesla delivery specialist would tell you to do exactly that, and send you over to Tesla service.
@@orangepropeller4536 Panel gaps, paint issues, backseat release buttons, backseat alignments, check how easy the back seat go back up, driver door B pillar trim fit, top trim for looseness, glass roof alignment. That's all for now.
Very detailed review of the Model Y, thank you Ryan. I really appreciate that you mentioned all the issues you had, not just talking about the good things.
Probably the best Model Y review I’ve seen. Totally agree with your assertion about the defects-they need to be fixe, and they’re not at all acceptable on a premium vehicle.
For my wife's Model 3, the voice command is one of the best I've ever used. It usually gets my command on first attempt, not like my Toyota RAV4 which is so frustrating that I usually give up even trying.
I'd like to see more reviews of Tesla in cold, snow/ice environments over a full winter: Does the windshield wiper get stuck when the car is covered in icy-snow. Do the door handles still work after a night in icy conditions. How does the Tesla manage the snow build-up in the wheel wells since there is no engine heat to dissipate it. At what depth of snow will the car get stuck in the snow. What's the maximum grade the car can climb from a stopped starting point. How does it handle in the snow? What winter tire options are available? How about third-party options? How would a Tesla operate within Japan during the winter months? How much does the driving-range decrease during winter? 50%? How much driving distance does the heater consume while stationary? (Think defrosting the car in the morning where the car parks outside.)
You realize that many of the auto drive features have been already proven to be safer than a real driver, right? He probably just has it on auto cruise or something.
Thank you Ryan. Your in-depth review (experience) with the Tesla Model Y convinced me that I really want this car and will be ordering soon even with the issues you reported at the end of the video. I currently lease a recent model very very highly rated car in all categories and have fit and finish, rattle and drive train issues so I'm actually looking forward to all that a Model Y will bring to my life and really, already not caring about perfection in paint but better yet, expecting to enjoy superior design. You really nailed expressing your experience. Thanks again!
Thanks so much Ryan! Was seriously thinking about getting the Y until I saw your video. Will be waiting to see what they improve upon in the 2021 model.
I agree, for the price those are pretty significant issues in quality. Their focus is clearly on slapping them together and shipping them out without the detail to quality control. And we all know how annoying it is to get a Tesla repair done as not many places service them as well as back order and availability on parts. They are trying to pump out as many orders as they can without attention to quality and it's going to come to bite them in the ass.
It's Tesla, they're beta testing against their users. I think a lot users are in love with the brand. I'm not sure they care that the quality of the car is subpar.
Wow you're a living, breathing example of something I feared existed but didn't know for sure until watching this video. A walking, talking, cliche of a Tesla driver. In that regard you're the paradigm. Congrats!
Great honest review Ryan. A lot of Tesla owners will never give the bad, only the good. You say you bought it because you like the autonomy on the road. I am sure there will be a lot of manufacturers soon that will have an EV with this feature and more - VW, Volvo (will have lidar as well), Ford, GM, BMW, Skoda, Rivian, Fisker etc. Sorry to hear about all the problems, but it is almost expected now on a Tesla, even though they have been in production now for a long time and should not have excuses anymore. I think as long as people continue to buy Teslas, Musk sees no urgent requirement to fix physical problems instead concentrating on minor software updates which are cost effective for him and the buyers think they are getting something. I think when the competition ramps up, then you will see better quality and control being implemented, otherwise people will just go to the competition. It is a shame for the current buyers though. Agree with you about full self driving being a ways off - the name is not a representation of its current meaning, but future meaning (whenever that will be?)
Drove my first Tesla Model 3 last weekend ( Turo thank you). Hard to go back to my actual car. I was skeptical but after feeling the smooth pickup and having my first Supercharger station experience, was hooked. Took no time (20 mins) as it had enough entertainment to make that fly. Never tried the Model S and obviously the Model Y. But based on my experience, they are great. Even quicker.
Hopefully you’ll never run into this but one thing a I’ve experienced is that body repair on a Tesla is really expensive and takes awhile to get parts. I got rear ended in our model 3 and the 3rd part Tesla certified shop took about 3 weeks to get parts in before the would start the repairs. Then found additional parts that were needed that added another week of waiting. Final repair was over $9k which was covered by insurance of the person who rear ended me. Note that the car was still driveable after the accident. Guess the aluminum body panels and trunk panels are expensive.
I live 200 metres from a Tesla supercharger station and it`s tempting to get a Model Y, some very practical solutions. It`s either the Model Y or the Polestar 2. If the best features of both cars merged it would be an easy pick.

Thanks! And yeah, slip of the tongue haha
Ryan Shaw, yeah, easy tongue-tie mistake to make.
You’re the best Tesla reviewer ✔️
Much appreciated! 🙌🏻

@@alexeivoloshin3065 literally everyone
Thumbs up.
The fit and finish issues would make m3 crazy.
Dude, this is an awesome. Best general Tesla review for anyone who is new to Tesla technology to understand and easy to digest.
Thanks for the kind words!
Considering buying a Y. Loved the video, very detailed and unbiased. Good job!
As always, thanks for the in-depth review Ryan 👍🏻
And thanks for watching! And for the great accessories
I've been on the fence about a 3 and now the Y. Watched pretty much every video, and yours is on the podium for best objective info! I think the paint and panel gaps would be too much for my OCD nature, ha. Again, thanks for your hard work in helping make a big decision.
20:50 I live in Colorado so that sounds pretty incredible!
This is the best Model Y review video out there.
Model y on order. X was too expensive, s and 3 too small.
Same here!
S was too small????? So you bought a y?
S is bigger....
S was too expensive, and low to the ground. I misspoke to lump it with the 3
@@michaellatta did you get the long range or the performance? you can get a decent used model S for about 60k.
I retired from BMW and have driven them for 20 years now. I love the heads up display in the windshield in front of you. It was distracting at first but I easily got over that. I guess like you said it would be easy to adjust looking to the right for the display.
Very Well Done... Honest, Clearly Stated & Balanced Review! Thank You Ryan! 👍👍✅
Thank you for watching!
We're test driving a Y in an hour! Should be very interesting comparing it to our current i3.
how was it?!
Sport Computer Services probably different level
Never buy any car first year. Give yesr 2 or 3 for finess and you will be good
@@Oncewaslostbutnowimsaved Disagree, its things Tesla will fix and have in so many cases.
Man, I want to like this car so much but these are major quality issues for a $60k+ car
Why don't you buy a regular ICE $60k car then? And compare what all is missing in that?
Most issues have been fixed on the Model 3 and if you're willing to wait a year or two, those issues will be fixed on the Model Y.
I wouldn’t get that because they got rid of the Speedo in front of you. Even if they put just a heads up display I’d be ok.
@@TacoMonster4eva
There are two reasons why they didn't put a heads up display.
@R
Although Teslas are subject to some valid criticism, the negatives I usually keep seeing goes from distorted truths blown out of proportion or out of context to pure bullshit.
The Y has definitely grown on me looks wise, but I still love the 3
Thank you for the good review. I love Tesla and their mission statement and admire them so much, I just wish those noises are not there, I know they will drive me crazy. Maybe I should put my order on hold...
You’re welcome. And yeah, but they are fixing them this week for free. I’ll let you know how it turns out
Thank you
The use of onboard cameras as dash/guard cams is such a no-brainer its one of those things that almost mystifies you why Tesla is the first/only company to be doing that. The integration of being able to quickly view the clips on the built-in screen (or save a clip with a honk!) is great too, really smart user -friendly thinking.
Great review!
I think it's a shame Tesla still hasn't adopted the heads-up display trend.
18:58 Here's the good stuff. If you've ever wondered what an EV is like to drive, Ryan has it down.
@@samsun01 that's mean you didn't have to end that at the end
23:00 for negatives.
He forgot the biggest limitation, max payload of just 402 kg. That is the lowest available payload of any CUV.
Just pulled the trigger! I was hoping to wait until the standard model Y came out, but I don't feel like waiting another year.
I am sold, I am getting a Tesla.
Personally I'm more interested in a rivian once they start rolling off the production line
Corona fucked me up good.
Mindle I put my deposit for the R1S this past Fri. 😀. If it was for Rivian coming out, I would probably purchase the Y. The Audi eTron Quattro looks like a good contender too. Wish there were more choices out already.
Marco Deo Were you going to before watching it?
Very complete and well done! Answers many questions that I, a non-Tesla owner, have about the Tesla experience
I replaced all my interior lights with aftermarket ones. They are much brighter. I wish tesla had used them.

Hey Marc, do you mind to share your checklist?? Thank you
Just take pics of odometer and all blemishes you find on delivery day (with date/time stamps). If something is not within specs, Tesla will fix it. A Tesla delivery specialist would tell you to do exactly that, and send you over to Tesla service.

I'd like to see more reviews of Tesla in cold, snow/ice environments over a full winter:
Does the windshield wiper get stuck when the car is covered in icy-snow.
You seem overly distracted by that screen while driving...

When it's out of warranty it costs a fortune to fix. That's what scares me.
Agree totally about the AC controls, only physical button I miss having. I was fortunate and got one with zero build quality issues.
Yeah. It’s cool at first and then a little frustrating
That's really a lot of defects that the car came with.
Congrats!
2000 wheels and your curved them already
16:50 Congrats on your marriage!
The Model Y seems to have a cheap look, very plasticy.
That’s unfortunate. Hopefully my insurance would help out for repairs like that, but it’s definitely good to note
I live 200 metres from a Tesla supercharger station and it`s tempting to get a Model Y, some very practical solutions. It`s either the Model Y or the Polestar 2. If the best features of both cars merged it would be an easy pick.
Great review. I have several friends with other Tesla models and have been egging me to buy this, with their referral link. But you sold it to me, and earned my click on your referral link. Thanks and good job on this vid!
