Wow, for and 7th model variant of the Paladin its autoloader is basically WW2 era very advance indeed. They used this type of manual-autoloading type before on ships called "Battleships" and for the latest and last variant of the Paladin it's a opposite direction for the modern autoloading standards for both Western and Eastern designed. I sure hope the US Army next generation SPG the M1299 would have a full autoloading capabilities and a full manual as a redundancies when the system fails in live combat on the field.
Is the delicate process of connecting that firing pull designed like that on purpose? Seems kinda odd to slow down the firing by making them thread this tiny thing into the mechanism every time. I'm thinking it's a safety feature?
It's called fire control, the system is designed to make the final act of sending a 43 Kg high explosive shell 18 Km at other human beings a conscious thought with little chance of the gun firing due to a error, that's why they shout out what they are doing and verify each step.
The fighting compartment is pretty cramped with 3 guys in the basket and the TC up right. The charge bag inserted behind the shell needs an initial ignition charge for safety measures avoiding predetonnation. You see him inserting a little casing after the breach close. (It's basically the primer for a regular bullet) Then he slides the fire pin assembly over it then tethers the fire cord. As you see the recoil is pretty big, you don't want to be in front. So the cord lets you fire the gun safely on the side. After the shot TC takes it off quick because like mentioned, it's a tight fit in the turret and not only it can cause tripping hazard if it hangs about but also if it stays on while the loader's hands are still in front of the breach, all it takes is a little tug and he gets knocked out at best.
Because this machine is initially build around the 1960s. Obviously there are upgrade over the years, the fire control for example. But the gun itself is still the 1960s gun. The mechanical rammer is new stuff. For more modern system, they generally move on to assist loader, or fully automatic loader. No one is standing around the breech to get hurt.
You are absolutely correct. The use of the lanyard is ridiculous in the context of a fully modern SPH. Go search on RUclips for an example of a Pzh2000 crew firing 10 rounds in just over a minute, if you want to see how it should be done in the 21st Century.
You would think those charges would be bigger given the size of that shell. However, I imagine those charges are made out of something other than gun powder.
The system seems very efficient but the priming and cable method of firing seems unnecessarily antique compared to the rest of the process. Is there a reason an electric or semi auto system without having to hook up that cable every time is not used?
The same there is no auto loader, it's cheaper and easier to maintain. As an artilleryman would I say doing it like this is as effective/more effective? No lol. The autoloader topic is a tad different because "autoloader can malfunction and harm the crew" blah blah blah. I wish the paladin or 777 had a firing mech similar to the 119, but the breech block are completely different. Still possible if we ever start investing in our artillery like we should have started doing years ago.
I could not agree more. And for those diehards saying you can't do with the lanyard. Go check out the Pzh2000 or K9 systems. In fact, the US Army itself was scheduled to do away with the lanyard, but then they cancelled the XM2001 Crusader.
