- Another difficult compilation added to the Metallica Medley list!
This was a situation where I didn't honor the original beats because I feel the drums on Ride the Lightning are rather stale and uninspired despite it being a great album. It's as if Lars didn't find his identity yet - so I added my own!

Can you do a rings of Saturn cover they are death metal band and go extreme with the drums if you want to get a workout try practicing/learning a song or two it may be difficult but it will sound badass in the end

Absolutely amazing. It just looks so effortless. You could very easily replace Lars. Keep making videos, you're one of the only drummers on RUclips that I know will be pretty much flawless every single time you make a cover.

as a drummer and learned from lars, clive and bill, you are one of the best from whom to learn. your tuning is great and you've inspired me to get back into it and relearn these same albums over again.

You think you could give an Avenged Sevenfold song a go would love to see your take on some of their songs especially with your groove power and fills.

i love that fight fire with fire bridge. The cymbal placements are great in my ears and then the double kick to follow that part. 9:52 I've always known that Lars was a better drummer than can be heard on those older 80's recordings. Pretty good Josh Steffen. pretty good.

This dude is awesome,but I disagree with his comment on the "stale drums" of the Lightning album. Sure, Lars' fairly limited skills probably kept the drums beats and fills a bit more simplified, but it is almost a blessing because the grooves he did come up with serve the songs really well, and he doesn't add distracting flair all over the place.
I agree, my drummer added too many fills and always showing off, was super annoying. When it comes to drumming, sometimes less is more. Lars' playing on "ride" served the album very well. This drumming takes a lot away from the songs.

Dude, as much as I loved your Justice and Master Medleys, I gotta give the ultimate nod to this one. Not only is Lightning my favorite album, your Ktulu parts were just ungodly. Again, the transitions are awesome, especially the little unexpected Fight Fire With Fire crash.

Quick off topic question here. How is your soundproofing setup? I live in a one bedroom apartment with a low patience neighbor to say the least. The room is completley across the room, so it wouldn't be close. I've tried using electronic kits to avoid the noise problem, but the ones I've tried don't fit my style or are just low quality in general. So, I'd really love an acoustic, but noise has always prevented me from doing so. So, in short, how do you prevent this (if you have problems, that is)?

I live in a house and these are shot in my basement, which is cement. Plus my neighbors are cool about it. When I was young and just learning to play the cops were always over, so I walled my room and windows with that dense 1" fiberglass foam stuff.
And I'm glad you liked this one. I took a lot more liberties to do what I wanted because I'm not to impressed with the drum sound or performance in Ride. Lars wasn't Lars yet.

Yeah, living in an apartment definitley hinders my abilities. But, how did that fiberglass foam work? Cause I'd totally line my entire room with it if I had to.
And yeah the drums aren't as prominent on most RTL songs, especially Trapped Under Ice. Half the time I hear double bass and sometimes not. The only really great drum track IMO is Fight Fire With Fire.
Go to a hardware store and ask for it. It's used for insulation. They should know what your talking about.
I don't know what it is but I absolutely love the beginning of ride the lightning. The guitars playing like that and the drum and bass playing together aswell, sounds so awesome! And really good job from you Josh, awesome!

Lars is a great drummer, but indeed, Josh makes it look easy, thrust me, it's not.
Even if u had the skill, your legs could cramp up within minutes.

Just bloody fricken AWESOME Josh!!!! Been a huge Metallica fan since the late 80s and I think Lars is a wicked drummer. That said, you could take his place in a heartbeat and probably improve Metallicas' awesomeness.

I am so fucking jealous. I have been trying so hard to nail that malevolent, sinister swing in the rhythm part of "For Whom...", but it comes out wooden and non-groovy. Josh nails it effortlessly. Plus, can someone tell me if it's in 4/4 or 6/8? And he's wearing my favorite Metallica t-shirt. Love it.

Yeah it's funny how those get created. The medley always ends up being a couple minutes longer than the first make of it because I can see all the possibilities for the ending.
