Hi! I've had several question about cure time, so I thought I'd pin a comment here. With normal cold process soap (assuming it was made correctly), saponification is usually complete within 24 to 48 hours. After saponification, the time it takes for the soap to cure will depend on the oils used and water amounts - cure time means the time it takes for the water to evaporate and the bar to harden. With this modified cold process technique and starting with high temperatures, saponification was complete as soon as the soap cooled (the next day). However, I used a lot of water (in hopes it would help with fluidity), so when I unmolded the bars, they were still a bit sticky. I let them sit a week before the lather test just to dry out a bit. Out of curiosity, I actually did test the pH the day I unmolded them - my strip showed a good pH of between 8 and 9. It doesn't hurt anything to let the bars dry out longer, though. The lather may even improve as more water evaporates. Hope this helps! 😊❤️
I finally got around to making a shaving soap for my Dad. Parts of the video are probably long and tedious, but I wanted to show the entire process so you'll know more of how the soap might look as you go. Have you made a dual-lye shaving soap? I'd love to know if you've tried the modified cold process or the hot process and how it went. :) -Holly
The fact that you showed all the parts even the tedious parts was very helpful. As somebody who has not made soap before there are things I want to see somebody else go through so I know what to go through, even if I only need to see it once. Thanks for the great video!
Hope you answer my question on stearic acid .. you said that you added to oils but you didn't show how its added to oils or melted .. (Can you make a video on stearic acid? ) .. plus does affect the measurement of NaOH and KOH ? I understand that stearic acid does reduce the impact of NaOH and KOH so you have to add more of that to compensate .. right?
Just made some of your recipe yesterday. Progressed exactly as shown in your video. However, I used a metal cylinder mold and helped to ensure complete saponification by placing it in a 180 F preheated oven (with the upper rack removed). Kept it in there for 2-1/2 hours. Unmolded late last night. This morning I cut into about 7/8" thick pucks. Had one small 1/4" sliver left over and tried it out shaving this morning... BAM! Spot on recipe! Great job Holly! I put the recipe into my recipe files stored at the Soapmaking Friend website which has IMHO the easiest to use soap calculator out there. I may do some tweaks like adding some Kaolin clay. Again... thanks for a great method. BTW, I've been making soap since 2002. Became really good at making liquid gels for showers and hand washing.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE AND ENJOY WATCHING PLUS LEARNING FROM YOUR CHANNEL!!! Every project I’ve seen you do has been done with such grace and elegance. I started my soap and skincare business back in January and I’m happy to report that my customers enjoy my soaps and I can get them sold sooner with your 35% Lye concentration method. Thank you for being such an AWESOME TEACHER and sharing your work with the world!!💯🙏🏾💚
This is the best gift for a man. I did this for all my men one Christmas along with the brush and the razor. They loved it. Your dad will love it. The bubbles are so creamy and lovely.
THANK YOU !! I have been using " Shaving Soap " for 45 years now. I am now retired & with the free time on my hands, I thought 'Let's try making some shaving soap. Your Honesty on where you gained ideas & insight is commendable !! I will follow your suggestion to purchase Carrie Seibert's book. Thank You !! Great Video !! Well Made !!! Hope to see more of your videos.
Holly, I know this video is 2 years old. I used your method and recipe and made these shaving bars yesterday. I put the soap in a pipe mould. Great recipe, quick and easy to follow and make. Today I unmoulded. Quite sticky, but able to cut into rounds. I wondered if I could mould them with my hand shampoo press. I re-cut the rounds, (to fit the mould) weighed them out and with lots of baking soda on all parts of the mould, was able to press them, without them sticking to the mould. They came out perfect. Now sitting on the drying rack - a wonderful sight! As always, a wonderful tutorial. Thank you!
Ohhh, thanks for this. I accidentally ordered potassium hydroxide and didn't want to make liquid soap. This is great! I ordered the book and can't wait to try it out!
Wonderful! Thank you for sharing. I make mine with hot process, I also add buttermilk and colloidal oatmeal. Watching your modified process, makes me keen to try it this way.
I just made one, following your instructions, for my father and in-laws too. Hope it will turn great for them 😊😊😊 Thank you for sharing this precious knowledge & skill 💕💕💕
I saved this video to try your recipe for Christmas gifts for people this year. I’ve never tried dual lye, only worked with both separately. I’m super excited and I can’t wait 😆 I’ve had a volcano happen to me with potassium hydroxide with liquid soap making so Lord willing I’ll go slow 🤣 thanks Holly! I hope you’re doing well and MERRY CHRISTMAS!!
Holly, thank you for posting this. I've recently gotten into cold process soap making, and I've been wanting to learn more about shave soaps. I have sensitive skin, and I live in an extremely remote place where it is difficult to get typically aerosolized or pressurized canisters shipped to me. Being able to make my own soap could help with both of those problems, especially now that I have all of my soap making equipment in hand. Have a great day!
So interesting! I had no idea thats how shaving soap was made :o great video, loved that you left in all the stirring so we could see it go through those stages!
Thank you for sharing Holly. Ive made hot process shave soaps. Still Trying out recipes & tweaking. This book was very helpful as well as kevine divine's soap testing videos.
wow wonderful, how much water did you use? Is the weight of the two types of hydroxide always 500g? essential oils how many ml or drops? thank you so much
Thanks for the great video! This my first shaving soap and I am really excited about it. I will be unmolding tomorrow. I did not add as much of the essential oils, as I was concerned that it would be too much for something that would be concentrated on face area. I notice that the Stearic acid did have a strong odor. I know it is the steStearic acid since this is a new item that I have not worked with. Do you know if this is common? I know I will be adding more fragrance for the next batch.
I have a question, how much water did you use, and how much (wt) of lye. I did not understand the part of ... water = 2.6 x (NaOH + KOH) (28% lu solution) and 6% super fat. very good video I hope you help me with my doubts!
Thank you for sharing this, I’ve got a lot of bearded men in the family, so not sure if they shave, but I’m going to try my hand at this. I am curious, is water added when ready to use to get that creamy look that yours has at the beginning of video?
Thank you! I always calculate my water amount using lye concentration. In case you need more info on it, here's a great article from Modern Soapmaking on the subject: www.modernsoapmaking.com/lye-solution-in-soapmaking/
Woooow Holly 😍😍 that lather is aaaaawesome 💕 your dad will love it 💕💕 I made several HP shaving soaps, and i love making it that way. I also joined the class "CP Shave Soap Masterclass Video eClass" from Amanda Aaron (Lovin Soap) but i never tried that myself before (still on my to do list lol) but that was a very helpfull class, where she teaches us how to formulate your own shaving soap, and she learned us 2 different ways how to make it. (all realtime and step by step and really easy to understand.) 😊😊
Thank you so much, Angélique! I was thinking of trying HP next time just to compare. I watched Amanda’s excerpt video on RUclips and just that little bit was so helpful. I need to see if she has her CP Shave Masterclass available in her store. I’d love to watch both of her methods. 😊 Thanks for letting me know about it.
Holly - Kapia Mera Soap You more then welcome 😘😘 The first time I made the hot process shaving soap it looked very rustic and it wasn't easy for me to flatten the top nicely. (of course it was also the nerves that count, because it was also the very first time I made a HP Soap ever lol. You can watch the first ones I made, at my IG almost at the bottom) If I make them now, I pre-heat the cups, that helps me that the soap does not cool down too fast because of the cold cup I pour the soap in. Yes, Amanda still offers the class in her store 😊😊 I hope you will share the HP version as well with us 💕💕
Thank you! I used a lot of water when I made these (hoping it would help with fluidity). They were pretty sticky feeling, so I let the bars sit for a week to dry out before testing the lather. After three weeks, the bars feel about the same. They won’t ever be super hard like a regular cold process bar due to the high percentage of KOH I used. You could let them dry longer if you like though. 😊
Hope you answer my question on stearic acid .. you said that you added to oils but you didn't show how its added to oils or melted .. Hello Ma'am your soaps are always amazing and very unique. Kindly suggest which formulation gave you a better shaving soap duel lye or just soap made with NAOH
Hi! I love your chanel and I learn a lot. My name is Debora and I'm from Brazil. Here potassium hydroxide is forbidden... I don't know why. So, can I use just the sodium hydroxide for this recipe? (Sorry for my bad English)
I typically make cold process soap as well. My female customers are looking for a shave bar to use in the shower (but without a brush). Would this recipe work?
Hi, my question is, This shave soap that you made, does it not need to wait 4-6 weeks for curing? or 1 week is enough to cure and ready to use? Does it safe, and nobody can burn their skin? Hope to hear back from you? Id like to try to make it? thanks in advance

I was thinking of trying the HP method next just to compare. If you do try the modified CP, let me know which method you end up liking the best. 😊 Thank you for watching!
i made a shaving soap, but the superfat goes around to 15%. 2 days in silicone mold and the bars has still liquid oil and they are soft. what can i do to save them, or can i let them 1 more day? thank you.

good morning, I'm Alessandro, I don't speak English, can I ask you for the written recipe for this soap? I do the translation. with speech it is difficult. Thank you so much. Yours sincerely Alessandro from Italy
Ale Def - No, just follow the recipe exactly as written. She’s just listing what the super fat percentage is. Have you made soap before bc it’s a pretty standard term?
Ale Def - oh, I see she didn’t specifically list that. I don’t know, use the lye calculator she suggested and divide the amount 40/60 between the two different types.

When did you add super fat ?? And what did you use oil / butter for superfat ?? Pls guide
I don't think the lather will change by curing the bars. But it helps with storage.
Nice video

Best video I've seen since I've been looking for shaving soap how to videos.
Best shave soap making video on RUclips. Nice job!

Greetings from Korea! thank you for this! :-)
Very nice lather 🤗
Nice! A little Lanolin can be good in the mix also.
How cool! It looks just like shaving cream!
Looks wonderful, thanks for the links.
Thank you for sharing Holly. Ive made hot process shave soaps. Still Trying out recipes & tweaking. This book was very helpful as well as kevine divine's soap testing videos.
(2:50) - I would have used a hand whisk to stir.
Would mix up much more efficiently.

I just have one question, to calculate the lye solution, what metod did u use? "water as %of oils" or "lye concetration"?
Thank you! I always calculate my water amount using lye concentration.

Wow! that was amazing
Beautiful✨ .. Does the scent remain the soap or fades within a few months. In Cp soaps scent fades

Beautiful consistency. How long would a single disc last for a man shaving daily?
Wow rich in creamy lather
Very nice
If I want to make 200g
So water will be
2.6 ×(80+120)
I've never tried to do this as a cold process before- it looks like it goes through all the stages of hot process on its own without outside help.
Thanks for a wonderful video, making the product so easy to make. Will the curing be appx 10 to 15 days
Thank you! I used a lot of water when I made these (hoping it would help with fluidity). They were pretty sticky feeling, so I let the bars sit for a week to dry out before testing the lather. Creative works. How long is the incubation period for shaving soap
Hello Ma'am your soaps are always amazing and very unique. Kindly suggest which formulation gave you a better shaving soap duel lye or just soap made with NAOH
Thank you so much for this... I just want to ask you, can I add flavour maybe chamomile and how to do it ?
Hi, where did you get your glass bowl? I like it
Hi! I love your chanel and I learn a lot. My name is Debora and I'm from Brazil. Here potassium hydroxide is forbidden... I don't know why. So, can I use just the sodium hydroxide for this recipe?
(Sorry for my bad English)
Thank you🌹🌹🌹
Hi, does it not need to cure for 1 month? Is it ready to use after next morning
Well explained, how many grams of essential oils in total did you use?
Why dual-lye?
Did you use Coconut Oil 76?
But what do you do after you wet the whole bar. Does it dry out after a day between shaves? How long would one bar last you?
I typically make cold process soap as well. My female customers are looking for a shave bar to use in the shower (but without a brush). Would this recipe work?
شكرا لما تقدميه
Hi, my question is, This shave soap that you made, does it not need to wait 4-6 weeks for curing? or 1 week is enough to cure and ready to use? Does it safe, and nobody can burn their skin? Hope to hear back from you? Id like to try to make it? thanks in advance
Hi Holly! Have you experienced any warping/shrinkage of the pucks after weeks of curing using a 28% lye solution?
hello holly. I want to ask you a question. I don't understand how many grams of water. 2.8oz
How many grams of Noah and KOH
Hi.. wonderful video representation.. but I am
Unable to understand the Noah and koh % which is 40 and 60% ... how do I calculate it ... unable to understand the calculator too .. could you tel me what would be the lye amount for 500gms batch ?
Wow that heated up and cooked through really fast! Does that happen because of the potassium hydroxide or the stearic acid?
I love making shaving soaps!! My boyfriend loves it!! I’ve only tried making it the hot process way and it went through similar stages that your soap gone through too. Maybe I should try doing it this modified cold process method too! Thanks for sharing❤️
I was thinking of trying the HP method next just to compare. If you do try the modified CP, let me know which method you end up liking the best. 😊 Thank you for watching!
Can we add btms to this recipe???
i made a shaving soap, but the superfat goes around to 15%. 2 days in silicone mold and the bars has still liquid oil and they are soft. what can i do to save them, or can i let them 1 more day? thank you.
Buying individual ingredient amounts on Amazon involves a lot of mailing expense making it prohibitive. I have no idea where I can buy some of the ingredients in physical stores as they are not things I would normally buy. What kind of shops would carry the main ingredients?
Does anyone know what's the role of stearic acid and glycerin in this recipe? Can they be omitted or substituted by something else? Thanks!
what did you use as a superfat?
Great video it looks awesome! I really like that texture of the foam. I want to make a female version of this.
Thank you! That’s a great idea! I love using shaving soap myself. 😊
how if add koh after finishing bar soap. to make it liquid
if anyone knows who to calculate water, please share it. I didn't understand the eqasion above
if you plug all the info she gives into a soap calculator (Soapee), it will tell you.
How much time has to cure? 4 weeks like CP? What about the ph?
It really depends on how much water is used. Assuming the soap was made correctly, saponification is complete within 24 to 48 hours (give or take a day) with normal cold process soap. This modified cold process soap was fine to use the next day (after it cooled)...it’s kind of like a fast hot process, basically. I used a lot of water in this recipe, so I let it sit for a week before trying a lather test..just to let it dry out. Thanks for asking! :)
Hi, I'm wondering if your dad loved the shaving soap also do you still make it for him ?
What is the shelf life of this soap please?
Dumb question, but does this recipe not need sodium lactate?
First time around the soap was tacky. Do I discount the glycerin as a "Liquid Discount" on the calculator?
Could this be considered hot process soap?
muito bom o sabao de barbear meus parabens.......................................
¿Sólo esperas una semana para probarlo?
Teach me how to make shaving soap. I wanna learn so I can shave easily
Hi why you add steraric acid?
Great video. Does anyone know the environmental impact of the ingredients and are they all naturally derived chemicals?
good morning,
I'm Alessandro, I don't speak English, can I ask you for the written recipe for this soap? I do the translation. with speech it is difficult. Thank you so much.
Yours sincerely
Alessandro from Italy
The recipe is listed below the video.
Lisa O on that amount of fat I have to discount the hydroxides of 6%?
Ale Def - No, just follow the recipe exactly as written. She’s just listing what the super fat percentage is. Have you made soap before bc it’s a pretty standard term?
Lisa O 68g of total hydroxides. quite right?
Ale Def - oh, I see she didn’t specifically list that. I don’t know, use the lye calculator she suggested and divide the amount 40/60 between the two different types.
👍👍👍👏👏
Don't we need curing period for this like 4 weeks like other cold processed soaps
hi I want to make soap please send me a all ingredients of soap .
