He seems to want to stand out more as oppoed to Grohl, who knew that blending in would be the best way to syand out as nirvanas drummer and the best thing for the band. That's an underrated skill. Nick Mason of Pink Floyd has a similar gift.
With every nirvana videos with chad, im always trying to figure out the difference drumwise. I know most nirvana songs sounded better when dave took over the drum role but the problem is i cant seem to specifically pinpoint the difference. They both appear to have the same drum lines and arrangement but theres really something different with daves drumming that made these songs sound better.
chad kind of played like he went to jazz school or something. he plays his own version of a swing pattern on the ride cymbal a lot, dave was more focused on pummeling the drums and keeping perfect time
@@Uncannyguitar i'd agree with this. it's that riding the ride cymbal repetitively on each beat, it makes songs feel slower. dave used it to keep time but generally just left the toms and snare do the talking in the verse, which makes it feel a lot more upbeat. i'd say that's one of the main differences, it's that incessant hi hat or ride or cymbal against only doing it every couple of beats or taking it out completely.
Chad lacks a lot of power in the choruses that grohl had but hes a bit jazzy and good with a ride cymbal, creative on the bass and tom hits as well. He overplays the hi hat a bit and it pulls him back out of time sometimes, something I used to be terrible for Go to the second verse here and the fill into it (about 1:40). He and grohl play almost exactly the same fill into the chorus but you can barely hear it here, with grohl it sounds like a shotgun
In the Nevermind version of this song Kurt Cobain arpeggiates the verse part. The Nirvana / Pixies method to song writing can be really helpful to beginner song writers. Just write a couple variations of the same riff.
I think its a Univox Hi-Flyer, but Et-270s are the holy grail. I own one now and literally wouldn't sell or trade for anything. I looked on ebay a year or so ago and the value isn't too great. Maybe 600-800, but that isn't important. The sound it produces is one of the most unique things I've ever heard by far.
The lyrics were still being worked out. Most of it was done but it’s not finished here. And when he said he wasn’t gonna crack, it turned out he did. He cracked up big time and crashed.
Chad on drums, Krist bass, Pat guitar, Dave guitar/mic and give it a go for the Nirvana reunion. How awesome would that be? Oh wait, does Courtney still own the rights for all Nirvana songs they‘ve made?
I understand Dave played harder, and with more rage, etc.. but I'm a drummer, and in no way do I look at this and say, boy, the drummer is holding the band back. Hell, they barely changed what he was doing. I will never understand why Chad was booted from the band.
ducati644 ducati644 Unfortunately for Chad, the recording quality of Bleach isn’t great. And if there is an instrument that’s going to suffer from subpar recording quality, it’s the drums. Chad was a creative drummer. Dave has better dynamics. His power and stamina also have a huge effect on Nirvanas sound. When I listen to them with Dave, especially live, there’s a sense that he’s really hold down the foundation of the band. It feels less clear with Chad. Chad is sloppier, I think this performance is a good example of that. Chad wasn’t bad though, but they were right to pick Dave 🤷🏿♂️
Dave was in a band that had done "better" than Nirvana by the time he joined. So I think that they felt as though Dave was the star and that they would do better with him. Turns out Kurt was the star, it just took one to know one.
I guess my point is that they didn't kick Chad out for Dave, they just kicked Chad out, and then and spent a while looking for a different drummer. To me, Chad isn't so bad that you just kick him out. Just my opinion. He was a solid drummer, and I like how he incorporated double pedals.
@@PunkMonster I see where your coming from, but dg just has something extra in his style of playing. It just fit with the band better than Chads. Im not a dg fanboy, although I do appreciate his time in Nirvana and what he added to them.
Dave openly credits Chad for all the music that preceeded him. He also came on board after the band was getting better with production. Dave brought that aggressive Bad Brains'esque energy to the band for sure.
sorry to be a music nerd critical person but chad sped the song up as soon as he came in.he did come in at the exact correct time that he was supposed to,but he sped it up uncomfortably so for kurt and krist. but to somehow balance this out,i have seen footage of him playing amazingly great,as good as any drummer should be but not here
Interesting to see that most of the song was actually ready at that time... few changes here and there, mostly the lyrics and of course the drums... but the drums aren't that far off the nevermind version. The bass is mostly there...
fucking genius. ascending guitar riff at the same time as a descending bass line.beautiful.any music nerds out there check out everybodies gotta change sometime by taj mahal.it has the same thing going on
I dig chad channing, and I have seen him play as good as dave grohl in my opinion, but in this clip he is not keeping up.its like he only learned how to play drums a couple of months before this....fucking awesome clip though
ah ok,i didn't know this before i posted what i just posted.yeah i have seen him play as good as dave grohl too,but not here.and also not on some other stuff i have seen.if he is still a drummer and he hasnt had any injuries or anything like stephen adler then he would probably be awesome now
I love how people always go on about how Dave is so much better than Chad when really they don't get the difference in quality of recording situations they were each a part of. To put it in perspective the rental cost of the drum gear that Dave used on Nevermind was just over $1500 for ten days.... the recording costs for every single song combined that Chad appeared on was less than that. Its reported that Nevermind costs $130 000 to make while Bleach was under seven hundred bucks.
So if Chad had all equipment that Dave had he'd magically be a better drummer? I've seen Dave play a shit kit like this and make it sound amazing. It's not the gear, it's just playing style, power, and talent. Also, it's really not fair to compare them. Dave is in a class of his own with his drumming. Respect to Chad for helping to bring Nirvana to the point of needing Dave. Respect to Dave for being Dave.
If its just the paying style, power and talent that make something great then why did the band spend any money to record Nevermind? They could have bought a pretty decent house at the time for what they spent to make the album which is a lot for a group of guys who had trouble making rent.
@@TheSickNeeds That was the record label and producer, not the band. They would have been fine with low budget recording and happier with the overall sound and mix. Kurt considered Nevermind over produced, but it was a big label album and it put them on the world stage.
@@bigbassjonz The band was given options and a budget (and they went over budget). The record label didn't want Butch Vig because they didn't know who he was. Nirvana choose to work at Sound City because it had a Neve board. The label pushed for a bigger name to be attached to the album so the band was given a list of names to choose from and they picked Andy Wallace because of his credentials of having worked with Slayer. What Kurt said he was happy with and not happy with changed in every interview. Dave was so in love with the sound he got during those sessions he ended up buying that exact Neve board. When the band recorded their follow up they wanted a less polished sound but still went with a specific person because of how great they felt is past work sounded. Steve Albini mainly for his work with Pixies.
Jack Endino said in one interview that Dave played Chad's parts on Nevermind for almost all of the songs. So basically Chad wrote drums for Nevermind and got NO credit at all. Let that sink in for a moment.
It was literally in bloom stop you chad fans are toxic he is not a better then Dave he was kicked out the band for a reason. You obviously never touched a drum kit before
@@kevenrowe2958 Are you stupid ? Or blind ? Or deaf ? You have a video in front of you where Chad is playing Lithium note for note. Also , Jack Endino sure knows better than you. So go fuck yourself.
No. 5 songs off Nevermind. Not all. Breed, In Bloom, Lithium, Polly & Stay away. These songs were recorded with Butch & Chad at the Smart Sessions before he got fired. Dave made some changes on In Bloom, he added an extra kick on the main verse. Also on the other ones & this comes from Chad himself. Check your facts before cussing around.
@@elizaely5428 Facts ? Which facts exactly are you talking about ? I was referring to what Jack Endino has said. It's not about an extra kick or an extra hi-hat... You are missing the point completely, which is that Chad participated in the songwriting process and the drum parts for for almost all of Nevermind songs were written by CHAD. Ofcourse Dave made some small changes for the final recording... Duhh. Also Jack Endino said that "In Utero" was the first and only album where all the drums were written by Dave.
Did you expect Dave to come in and change the entire a song, which the band already knew? That makes no sense. For example, would a guitarist write entirely new parts when he joins a band for existing songs? Anyway, they are really are Kurt's drum parts, he told the drummers exactly how he wanted the song. Plus Dave hits way harder, so he added his own style. It's actually way better.
He kept the essence of the drum patterns but dave put in flams in the "i like it...." part. Is that the bridge or chorus? Not sure. Kurt was pretty picky about his drummers. I actually prefer Chad as the drummer for nirvana.

He overplays the hi hat a bit and it pulls him back out of time sometimes, something I used to be terrible for
Go to the second verse here and the fill into it (about 1:40). He and grohl play almost exactly the same fill into the chorus but you can barely hear it here, with grohl it sounds like a shotgun
Early demos use to sound different even when they are played by the same musicians.
Always liked Chads drumming. Besides, the snare sounds like a grenade going off.
I like that Dave respect Chad work on this tune
I can actually see and hear the final song channeling and sinking in from the ever-ether...
Sick.
Damn ! Many thanks bro !!!
Channing was an intrigal part of the Nirvana sound, and the basis of Nirvana's percusive style, leading up to the album Nevermind.
It just does not fit, at a good time I integrate Dave and I improve everything.
In the Nevermind version of this song Kurt Cobain arpeggiates the verse part. The Nirvana / Pixies method to song writing can be really helpful to beginner song writers. Just write a couple variations of the same riff.
Loud soft
Raw and great! Thanks!
I love Kurt Cobain, miss him dearly!! R.I.P. 😇❤️🤘🎸
How do you like the AI song Laura?
This makes me HAPPY
Thnx for a rare video 👍🏻
** This drummer is good too !!!
I love that Epiphone ET-270 Kurt is playing! They're really expensive guitars though nowadays, I think.
@@jackdaniels4985 it's an epiphone ET-270 because the body shape is a bit different than the hi flier, also it has single coil pickups.
Already got Chad Channing's autograph!

Dave really transformed the song with his drumming
The lyrics were still being worked out. Most of it was done but it’s not finished here.
And when he said he wasn’t gonna crack, it turned out he did. He cracked up big time and crashed.
dave grohl show dynamics and hard as he hit his drumset. but bleach album really for chad drumming
Dale Crover was the best drummer on bleach
Channing Tatum the grunge GOAT
Holy shit.
Chad is the man
Chad was good drummer and he's my favourite.
Em 2021 ainda n encontrei uma banda tão inovadora quanto foi o nirvana
Bestial 👏 👏 👏
Chad on drums, Krist bass, Pat guitar, Dave guitar/mic and give it a go for the Nirvana reunion. How awesome would that be? Oh wait, does Courtney still own the rights for all Nirvana songs they‘ve made?
Boy, Dave sure as Hell added a lot
I understand Dave played harder, and with more rage, etc.. but I'm a drummer, and in no way do I look at this and say, boy, the drummer is holding the band back. Hell, they barely changed what he was doing. I will never understand why Chad was booted from the band.
He’s definitely not as steady as Dave
@@stampede4107 Maybe, but do you listen to Bleach and think the drums sound bad or unsteady?

Unfortunately for Chad, the recording quality of Bleach isn’t great.
The real nirvana
00:50 The video camera wasn't ready for '90's grunge...
wow the soundguy was on point here
if on point means pointing towards disaster.
Hahahahaha
You can really here how Dave changed this band. He really was that missing ingredient. Chads a good drummer, but Dave just added something.
*hear
Dave ghrol is more intense, so gave them more power. Dont get me wrong, chad is very good too and creative.
@@PunkMonster dude the first shows whit dave where in very little places
@@PunkMonster I see where your coming from, but dg just has something extra in his style of playing. It just fit with the band better than Chads. Im not a dg fanboy, although I do appreciate his time in Nirvana and what he added to them.
Dave openly credits Chad for all the music that preceeded him. He also came on board after the band was getting better with production. Dave brought that aggressive Bad Brains'esque energy to the band for sure.
This looks like every bands awkward high school talent show performance
Chad made the foundation, Dave carry on the building..
sorry to be a music nerd critical person but chad sped the song up as soon as he came in.he did come in at the exact correct time that he was supposed to,but he sped it up uncomfortably so for kurt and krist. but to somehow balance this out,i have seen footage of him playing amazingly great,as good as any drummer should be but not here
fudge I adore Nirvana but... If I would have seen this video before the "boom, we are here", I would have never bet on them
Interesting to see that most of the song was actually ready at that time... few changes here and there, mostly the lyrics and of course the drums... but the drums aren't that far off the nevermind version. The bass is mostly there...
fucking genius. ascending guitar riff at the same time as a descending bass line.beautiful.any music nerds out there check out everybodies gotta change sometime by taj mahal.it has the same thing going on
This proves the bridge goes "I'm not gonna CRY," not crack
Is there a coffin in the bassdrum?
Probably muffling or mic isolation (to avoid bleed).
Don Furcio Pretty small coffin.
Don Furcio It's the best way to get that dead sound.
Kevy Nova hahaha, great explanation
What is it really tho?
That’s how it goes when you get fired
That's a pretty fuzzy overdrive during the chorus, different hearing such a tone. A bit more raw sounding than Nevermind that's for sure.
Hey Kurt nice to see you !! You wife is a ⛱️ Beach nothing changed 😉 😂
Damn Dave basically just took Chads drum parts in this LOL
Dave changed it a bit
@@grillbuster1519 you don't know s$hit!! Omg, WTF is wrong with you? Nevermind please don't answer that question because I
