The Perfect Overland Expedition Vehicle: Building Three Trucks In One! | Ep 3

- The base of this truck is a military Stewart & Stevenson M1085 extended frame flatbed. I am likely the first person to marry this chassis with a van box taken from a M1079 communication LMTV truck, and if that wasn't enough- I then add an 8 foot custom extension on the rear to finish with a 21 foot habitat.
In this episode I continue to prep the 12 foot box for my metal fabricators. I remove the stock windows, cut to relocate some of the windows and prepare the box to skin over some of the unneeded holes.
I sure wish I knew what kind of glue the military uses to build these boxes because it could hold the earth together!!
Follow along as I completely outfit and custom fabricate my home on wheels. In this video series I will detail all of the components and build steps that go into completing the ultimate overland expedition vehicle build.

That looks like a great platform, anxious to see how your buildout goes!
Thank you. Secdond truck on this platform for me. I really like it and it is rugged.
Really great video and ideas for new builders to have a plan set up knowing how much to cut because you can’t cut back 😂. But we are definitely enjoying the videos I know it’s going to take a while for the episode of the wiring but I want to see how all the solar power set up is done really looks impressive in the walk around video but definitely stoked to see more episodes of the build
Glad you enjoyed! Thanks for watching and we will be getting to the wires soon enough 😂
Look'n great!
Thanks man!
im really excited what you do on this build the 6x6 is finally a size where i see 2 peopel living longterm comfortably 😮
Agreed. Definitely more room with a 20 foot box.
✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨Dang Dude ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨~peace~
Thanks for watching
Dream rig! So frickn' awesome. I know that this build is completed now. Did you swap out the gearing so you can run at freeway speeds?
Thank you. Yes, I swapped out the diff gears for 3.07 ratio.
@@drivetheglobe I wondered if that was necessary given that they can barely do 60 mph in military form. Great build. The living space is fantastic. Safe travels to you and thanks for sharing!
Thanks for these videos! Question. Why not build the whole box versus the old box then rhe new box?
Basically comes down to cost, time & durability. To be honest the better way would have been to buy 2 boxes and cut them to fit the 21 foot length. They are far cheaper than the cost of materials and labor to build a box and way more rugged. Already insulated and a ton of time can be saved waiting for the fabrication.
Thanks for the idea of the 2nd box idea!
Is it hard or expensive to get insurance with a rig like this? Is it only liability not comprehensive? Looking forward to the rest of your build!
Greatly depends on the state I think. I have comp & liability. Generally you have to insure it as a camper or military truck.
So I know you explained how the walls of the box were built, but when you were removing the cutout section for the larger window, did I see something like a foam center? It would make sense, especially being a communications box, wouldn’t want any condensation build up possible but a huge plus for building a rig like this!
Yes, I will clarify that in future episodes. The walls are filled with solid foam insulation. Great for both heat and cold as well as sound. A major plus in getting one of these boxes rather than having to fabricate the whole thing.
Constructive critique: Your content is great but the pace is way to slow. I don’t want to spent 12 minutes of my life to see a window frame been cut. You should pack more footage in the same amount of time. Cheers
Thank you. actually agree. First couple are a bit slow. Future episodes are a little shorter and more content filled.
Skip the first 5 minutes, then watch on 1.5x speed XD
Please put some goggles on when drilling near your face Michael. I once got a metal shard in my eye & it was an experience I wouldn’t wish on anyone…….
Fair point. Thank you for watching.
A bit too tall, too long, and too heavy for most applications, but what the hell if it works for you, good on ya.
About the same size as my previous truck. A little heavier. Works for me being on the road full time, admittedly I would rather explore and go backcountry on 2 wheels though.
🧡
in the intro the music is much louder than your voice , hard to understand you.
Edit: in general you have a lot of (trash) musik where the sound levels are much higher than the spoken words before, people who listen to you with headphones make it louder to hear your voice, and then the loud musik destroyes their ear ... not good.
edit2: the working noise, like drilling , cutting etc.. is much more enjoyable without some random musik. man like tool noise
Sorry about that, thanks for the feedback, cheers.
