Great video! I just restored my Weber Smokey Mountain smoker. It was even worse than yours. I didn’t realize that it was full of water just sitting in it for 6 months or more. I had to cut the bolts out of it and replaced them all with stainless steel. Replaced the dampers, the straps that hold the water pan and grates, and replaced all three grates. To get the rust out of the bottom and top bowls I used a non-toxic product called Evapo-Rust from Harbor Freight. The rust was really bad, but with some serious elbow grease it worked very well. Like you I used high heat Rustoleum. Looks as good as yours! I enjoyed your video!
Thanks for watching! Yeah I know it’s so rewarding to bring something back that you thought you would never use again. I’m constantly looking on fb marketplace for rusty grills to restore. You can really find some deals that other people would pass up
Thanks for the video. This was helpful. I have an old weber like this one that I was thinking I might just turn into a fire pit. Build a nice wooden base for it and give it new life just as a place to have a nice evening wood fire. I didn't consider cleaning it up but maybe I will. Your approach makes it look pretty simple. I especially appreciated you showing the list of tools you used. Sometimes that's the hardest part of knowing what to do - what to USE to do the job.
After a few decades of reliable service, my 22 in Weber showed it's age. Wheels replaced twice, crumbling handles, and yep, the damper rusted stuck My wife bought me a new Weber for Christmas. I just couldn't get rid of my old buddy, so it's been sitting out by my shop. Thought about turning it into a fire pit when I saw your video. Plan now is to rebuild the old kettle. I bought a rotisserie ring kit a few weeks ago on Woot to swap in and out with the new kettle, but now I'm going to make the old unit primarily a rotisserie and a backup griller, and set it next to the new unit. I'll be able to rotisserie some whole chickens in one while I smoke some ribs in the other. "...fill up the tank with gasoline..." awesome. Great video, thank you, Sir!
Another way to remove the gunk without damaging or scratching any of the enamel is to use a Steamer with the scotch-Brite attachment, without almost any pressure the steam will melt\dissolve most of the gunk\grease within seconds and the Scotch-Brite helps with any stubborn gunk. You'll be done in half the time or faster using a steamer...
something enjoyable about restoring something to new. I'd have opted for the gloss high temp paint but that's a subjective choice. Looks good and most important going to cook good. Enjoy.
Awesome. Some advice for the youngsters: When buying a grill, you simply cannot beat a Weber for value. You just can't. They're the best bang for buck. But.... It's 100% worth it to pony up the extra simoleons to get the bigger, nicer model. The finish on them is stellar. Much nicer and tougher. My upgrade has been out without a cover for ages and still looks great, while my old cheapie is rusting in the scrap heap, looking just like this wreck. Now I might have to restore it...
Totally agree my Weber is the best grill I own. Got the master touch also with the upgrades totally worth the extra money. I use that grill more that any other cookers I have!
Good job sir! I restored a 1982 red Kettle when it was 23 years old. I too had to use an angle grinder to remove the rusty sweep system. The handles on that girl were beyond repair (the old school, wooden variety), so I bought new ones (the white handles at that point). I used her for 10 years before selling her to a buddy for $30 (the price I paid to restore her). He still has her, and is using her, and she is 42 years old. I am restoring a 1992 kettle now, that is in better shape than the 1982 kettle (I lovingly called Fireball). I think guys who question restoring an old kettle are just lazy!
