Hey Gabe, Andrew Tate is an online course guru who recently has gone viral seemingly out of here nowhere. He is a borderline scammer and as you said definitely entertainer Take whatever he says with a grain of salt. 99% of what he says he probably doesn’t believe he’s just says for clicks Have a good one thanks for all you do 🙏

Fun fact : Even in Lethwei, you use a guard which looks very similar to the dutch guard (Keep your hands up to make it more difficult for the opponent to land a headbutt). Even if I am not a specialist yet, I can confidently say that the dutch guard (or let's say the Dutch Looking guard) works even in bareknuckle.
@@bryant8647 I do, and I'd love to compete, but it is still not developped at all in my country, yet. In fact I train in the only gym in the entire country that teaches lethwei ^^
i thought Tate meant it like: "you cant just leave your hands there, passive, and hope for them to shield attacks", not "keeping your hands up is useless in a fight". But after viewing the short pieces of him fighting, it does seem he thinks keeping your hands upis useless!
The reason he keeps his hands down is because his eyes are bad and he can't stand gloves touching them, i think he got retinal detachment or something. I think that's why he didn't learn how to block well.
@@absolutelynothing6008 Maybe if he kept his hands up his retina wouldn't have been detached in the first place. It would have been a hit to the head that detached it not a hit to the arms.
@@absolutelynothing6008 I think it’s more so him always fighting shorter opponents with less reach, he never has had to keep his hands up since he can usually just lean back or step out of their striking range. Love this. When a 6x world champion says "Who? Never heard of him" to your name and you are putting yourself out there as a pro fighter you should be humbled.

Tate is wrong, but he's not entirely wrong as many think, just guarding up and expecting the gloves to work like a impregnable barrier is extremely stupid, anyone who had 1 sparring session knows that using the guard is not just lifting your gloves to your face like it would work on a video game, you have to know what you're blocking, you need to move properly so you don't absorb the impact like a dummy. Another thing people don't consider is that when they spar they're usually using 16oz gloves, its totally different to fight with 8oz gloves or 10oz like they do in boxing, not only because its harder to guard up but also because the opponent is also using a smaller glove, there's so much about defense in kickboxing and muay thai that after years I still think that its easier to learn how to strike than it is to defend properly.
Also, fighting at 205 lbs is different than Gabriel fighting at 145. I respect Gabriel, but I really thought he would acknowledge this. Gabriel made a video about a fight he had against an opponent who was good at cutting weight. He said that his opponent was 20 lbs heavier than him in the fight and went on to describe how that weight difference made the fight much harder than usual. For example, Gabriel said he had his tooth chipped because he forgot to put his mouthguard in between rounds. I think this is enough evidence to demonstrate the point honestly. I do respect Gabriel's expertise in fighting and youtube content, but just go look at UFC heavyweight / light heavyweights vs light weights and you can see the difference in the brutality of the knockouts and overall damage done in the fights.
@@Dirkzy but a 205 fighting a 205 is essentially the same as a 145 fighting a 145 bro. Weight classes are obviously very important, but the overall point here is that Tate is basically saying NEVER guard up, and all the bizarre crap about breaking bones etc. 🤭 Of COURSE anybody just standing there with hands permanently stuck to their temples is an idiot, and isn’t gonna last long in the ring, but to completely dispense with the Dutch guard, and other tight guards is just utterly moronic. The best defence is to not be there when the strike comes, but nobody can do that every time, hence why guards are absolutely essential. (Ask Usman, because his simultaneous parry and slip got him KTFO...he’d probably still be champ if he’d just opted for a tight guard for the last minute of the fight) 🙏
@@paulpelle3046 you couldn’t be more wrong 205 is like inevitably 6’0+ && 145 is like always 5’7 lol… everybody knows heavier weight = less technique & more brute strength.. lighter fights are world of a difference in technical fighters… also this dude fought forever ago … different game, probably coulda gotten 8-9 belts too if he tried
I''m always sceptical when someone talks in absolutes and declares "such and such will never work" there is a use case for almost everything. This is a particularly bad example, it's not always the best defensive strategy sure, but it is useful, and you can easily find plenty of footage of high level pros demonstrating as much. More than anything I hate the way he demonstrates it, wailing on his training partner who is clearly just standing relaxed, he might have his hands up in place but is clearly not bracing at all, feet completely parallel. Abusing your partner like that to prove a point or make a clickbait video is what really shows him to be a complete tool.
Indeed. Excellent comment, and depending on the context, even with mma gloves one can implement somewhat of an active shell guard done correctly. Petr Yan is one of the fine examples of how he utilizes and implements parries/long guard/ shell guard with head movement and mixes between them and adapts the tactics accordingly to the overall context of the fight. “ Everything works once” “ Fighting is relativity in motion, therefore never expect only respond as it one’s opponent within context that dictates tactics”
Your second word is "always". This is kind of a common sceme I couldn't help but notice in people who say that they don't like absolutes. Most people who say they don't like something oftentimes miraculously Start liking it if it helps there standpoint.
@@patmanpatmanson Fair point, there was definitely some hypocrisy in how I phrased that and I could have done better. Doesn't invalidate the statement however. Skepticism is generally a good stance to have.
It's a useful guard. But I have allways found that people that use it as a there primary go to stance the easiest to beat . It makes there jab to slow and you just bounce in and out on them at long guard . It's so easy to see a punch leave from that guard you just pary the shot with your outstretched left and bomb your right into that hole and leave . Or smash leaping left hooks at the liver and fire right in as they react to the body shot and leave . When I spar and see o this guy uses high as primary I'm probably gonna find this easy . Yeah, in a kickboxing context it's totally true, guarding up works extremely well, look at someone like Robin Van Roosmalen who Varga fought. RVR has one of the tightest high guards in the game and he dominated so many people.
It works in kickbxing because of the kicks..due to kicks the range is different and so is footwork..due to fear or kicks and knees it's harder to come in for body shots .however the downside is that it can make you lazy and the guard should active not passive..
I wouldnt say the high guard doesnt work it definitely has its place and the nuances are underutilized but against a crazy hard puncher its not ideal to stay in that position

What do you expect the guy fought in the 140s, hes didn't have to deal with light heavyweight+ power at an elite level. I fought at 205 and I sparred a national champion his size and accidentally split the guys nose and lip with a light jab. Light heavyweight + is a different sport with different strategies. @@wabbagaming2184 why not keep your hands \up and move away? i have seen light heavy weights + save themselves from KOs by keeping their hands up to help absorb when they get caught, its better than nothing, you do not really gain much by keeping your hands at your sides, it does not give you more power in your strikes nor makes it faster to hit back, or easier to counter.

I don't agree on what he said about high guard, but only if you ar talking about boxing, without gloves or with mma gloves that doesn't work, look at muay thai fighters in one fighting championship, they fight with mma gloves, but muay thai rules, and they changed their styles completely because of that.

He's technically correct. First time I sparred, I put my gloves up and kept them there, no head movement, no real defensive footwork. It worked fine when the first couple of jabs came at me, but when the first hook came the impact on my glove basically made me punch myself in the face. The other issue was how exposed my body was. It was easy for my sparring partner to throw a couple of shots upstairs to keep my guard up then attack my body. Nowadays I keep my right hand up, but my lead hand just kinda does it's own thing. It's more comfortable for me and I move a lot more freely. Having a high guard works, but not if it's your only defence. Get your head moving and stay nimble, people!
This was my experience as well. It was the most embarrassing thing because I decided to spar my friend at a party in front of a drunk crowd. My friend was 400 pounds and an adept fighter. I was 145 and he spent almost 30-45 seconds knocking me around the room until i lengthened my stance and extended my lead arm. I have a reach of 72 inches and I find hard to maintain offense/punching power and engage my cervical neck muscles and traps with a high dutch Style guard. Let's be honest first: anyone who asks pimp, woman-beater, someone who brags how easy it is for him to bribe police or a scammer for legitimate advice on anything needs to rethink who his role models are. That being said, guarding up does work for it's intended purposes and is essential skill to have. I don't like to use it often because I always had dificulity relaxing muscles and tensing up is something I don't like to do, but is useful when rushing in a opponent with better reach or dealing with aggressive opponent for a short while. Most of people can't stay defensive for a while and not eat some of strikes. Some of them, on the other hand, can pretty much absorb for round after round without issues. That is why sparring is important. I like to think that there aren't good or bad techniques, just what works for you or doesn't works for you and context (type of opponent, rules of a ring etc.). But it is up to individual fighter to go on his own journey and eats punches and kicks until he has it figured out.

I do agreed that the standard high guard sucks without the gloves, but even in a bareknuckle environment, you can totally still cover your head by grabbing the back of your head and shield the head with your whole forearm and elbow. Personally, i believe we should train how we fight. If you're not planning to enter any competitions, then learning defensive movements that only work while wearing boxing gloves is a waste of time, better spend your time on stuffs that can work with both gloves and without gloves. If the context Tate was talking about is competition, yea he's being full of shit, but if he's talking about bareknuckle fighting, he should have just ditch the gloves while demonstrating his point
@QUAN TRAN He did said 20%, and Mike was keeping his hands up covering his face. A little bit of acting from both parties trying to prove that their knuckles and hand bones hurt after using high guard without gloves will make a lot more sense
you still use a guard while doing BKF, just you emphasize blocking with the elbows over the hands so the guard is a bit different. reason is because someone hitting your elbows will likely injure their hand. movement and positioning is still king ofc

Yes, correct. Using forearms/elbows while grabbing back or side of head is excellent protection, speaking from experience. Make them punch the point of your elbow with their knuckles.
@@MusMasi Yep. The skull is excellent for absorbing punches. As long as we don't get it rocked and the brain inside rattled around, an attacker might do more damage to their hands than to us. It might be his style but for a short stocky guy like myself it’s perfect. Dutch kickboxing is my favorite style. Also if you’ve ever watched any of Tate’s opponents they all have gamer body’s. I believe he’s a cherry picker
this is really refreshing to see after seeing so many high level fighters (particularly from the UFC) giving Tate props and claiming he is a legit high-level kickboxer just for the clout/attention they'll get from him
This is a very interesting video espcially since Reynoso trained guys, Canelo, Oscar Valdez, Julio Martinez, etc. have all been getting exposed for their over reliance on the rigid high guard and how easy it is to exploit. I guess in Kickboxing it's much safer but if all your relaying on is shelling up it's probably not a great idea. Cedric exploited the high guard in his fights against Holzken through pinning the lead hand and jabs to keep shields up, perhaps if Holzken had a more layered guard game he wouldn't have been so easily controlled?
When I was first getting into Muay Thai in NYC, our gym hosted Robin van Roosmalen prior to the Glory lightweight tournament (this was 2013). I remember some of the long guard guys talking smack about the Dutch guard, and then watching Robin use it and just going "oh, oh damn." at the way he used his gloves and the subtle movements to set up shots. Andrew Tate is a clown. That week with him and his team was one of the first truly mindblowing experiences I had watching an elite guy work.
Gabriel this is great man! It’s literally dangerous a lot of these guys spreading techniques to naiv beginners who trust these people and train mainly on heavy bags and some light sparring here and there where you can get a way with alot of terrible mistakes. And even get the sense that they can protect them selfs and they’re learning self defense. When really they have no idea what work and don’t works. Try those matrix stances and guards in hard sparring.. hard sparring is where you get the reality of what works and don’t work. But then again you should spar hard at times and also with people who are roughly your same level and have an dialogue with when your a novic first years of sparring.
All spot-on. 🙏
Of COURSE anybody just standing there with hands permanently stuck to their temples is an idiot, and isn’t gonna last long in the ring, but to completely dispense with the Dutch guard, and other tight guards is just utterly moronic.
1000% defense is a much more tactical thing to learn than striking imo.
Look at all the Andrew Tate fanboys rushing to his defence. He said something extremely dumb guys.
“ Everything works once”
“ Fighting is relativity in motion, therefore never expect only respond as it one’s opponent within context that dictates tactics”

I can also 100% say you do not want to use guard against a heavyweight kick, your arms wont stop a thing. Thats too much power and speed, just move away.
@@wabbagaming2184 that's only your experience.
@topher nolastname Amen.
@@wabbagaming2184 why not keep your hands \up and move away? i have seen light heavy weights + save themselves from KOs by keeping their hands up to help absorb when they get caught, its better than nothing, you do not really gain much by keeping your hands at your sides, it does not give you more power in your strikes nor makes it faster to hit back, or easier to counter.
ive seen so many fights where dude's literally blocked whole ass kicks from MASSIVE men. i never understand the "blocks dont work" mentality, i swear its like some overcompensation from people who used to do karate.
Yall are taking things way too literally, if you go and watch the video he actually teaches the guy how to defend, tells him over and over to keep his hands up. Y’all are slow man 😂

@@gentlemandemon yes if you stand there like that to defend, that’s not the only way. You move as well, not a choice but both. That’s why he talks about Floyd so much and kind of adopted his style.
@@bestkickz2464 that's cool, but it's not what I'm talking about. of course there are other defenses, each having their appropriate place. But him saying "never shell up" is bad advice.
Also, if he's trying to imitate Mayweather's boxing, then he's doing a crap job at it.
i saw a footage of him sparring and saw he threw like 5 lead hooks in a row, no feints no follow up combo just straight up 5 raw lead hooks and he does it multiple times, and then i saw ppl in the comment section saying how good he is because hes a world champ like wth
It was just a sparring, he was playing, you can't judge his fighting skills based just on that, + he was a kickboxer, not a boxer, they don't use that many feints as boxers do. If u can threw 5 lead hooks in a row without a set up, you do, Roy Jones did that many times beacuse he could, of course Tate is not a high level boxer, but he surely can fight and knows how to fight.

He’s literally correct
This was my experience as well. It was the most embarrassing thing because I decided to spar my friend at a party in front of a drunk crowd. My friend was 400 pounds and an adept fighter. I was 145 and he spent almost 30-45 seconds knocking me around the room until i lengthened my stance and extended my lead arm. I have a reach of 72 inches and I find hard to maintain offense/punching power and engage my cervical neck muscles and traps with a high dutch Style guard. Also my body is very exposed and this why you'll a lot of liver shot knockouts in Dutch Style vs western boxing. This just me though. I think it's different strokes for different folks. No guard is perfect
He is not "technically correct" he is totally correct and this blonde guy right here is trying to discredit him.
Yup. Buddy doesn't even show the whole clip. Disingenuous to say the least.
@@fighthighlights2201 this "blonde guy"? You mean Gabriel Varga? World champion, the guy who defeated lerdzilla? Yeah I trust him way more than that clown Andrew Tate
It worked for me one time when I was in Korea. A larger man attacked me unprovoked, and in Korea it would have been illegal for me ot fight back. I simply used the Dutch guard, his punches landed on my forearms and I was able to walk away from the altercation with minimal injuries. Didn't know if he was trained but he was still larger and stronger than me.
I woulda slept that big idiot i donr care
He fought in a league called iska which is a small British kickboxing league ,tate wouldn’t last 1 round with guys like Izzy or Perreira they fought in class A kickboxing..Andrew is a C class fighter
why would you even think that he deserves to step in a ring with Izzy or Pereira and get punched by them? a local kickboxer from my town can knock him the fuck out.
Not all heroes wear capes Gabriel

Dutch guard has worked well for so many champs idk how anyone can take that guy seriously lol
Anderson Silva is the greatest striker of all time and he never really relied on boxing high guard. It doesn't work in MMA and street fighting as well as constant head movement and Wing Chun style boxing where you do several mini fakes to discourage your opponent from head hunting

Really appreciate your channel and what you do. Unfortunately, the best of what they do, do not always get the necessarily recognition. Wishing you continued success on RUclips as you have in your pro-fighting career.
Do some homework and research lol, none of the above has real evidence. All you could do is find something on the internet or Newsfeed from BBC to said he has a problem. Do both side review and trust your own eyes, not media. Literally tons of his so called victim came out to proof that that’s not real and is for certain purpose. Indeed
@@jaketheasianguy3307 Bare Knuckled you can also break your own hand as well punching someone, I have had people break their hands even hurt their whole arm and shoulder as well from them punching me in the head and I was completely fine, I only hand time to tuck my chin, I guess I do have a coconut skull though, that' something you should think about if you are ever going to punch someone bare knuckled.
Headbutting someone on the hand with the forehead as a punch is coming in is sort of a legit defensive option.
It might be his style but for a short stocky guy like myself it’s perfect. Dutch kickboxing is my favorite style. Also if you’ve ever watched any of Tate’s opponents they all have gamer body’s. I believe he’s a cherry picker

the difference between your breakdown and the Weasle's breakdown of tate is staggering haha i'll trust the champ! great vid gabriel!
Thank you. Some of the best kickboxers came from the Netherlands.
this is really refreshing to see after seeing so many high level fighters (particularly from the UFC) giving Tate props and claiming he is a legit high-level kickboxer just for the clout/attention they'll get from him
This is a very interesting video espcially since Reynoso trained guys, Canelo, Oscar Valdez, Julio Martinez, etc. have all been getting exposed for their over reliance on the rigid high guard and how easy it is to exploit.
But personally I believe when basic skill is learned hard sparring is a must for anyone wanting to real self defense or compete.

Glad you did this. The guy isnt trying to be funny... he has an audience that likes how much of a POS he is because it helps them feel better about being a POS themselves
