@@monsieurnick8443 I acknowledged that lelouch was a better thinker in my comment. But my point was that thinking and strategizing weren't the only traits that make a good leader. A good leader also leads his men from the frontlines, inspires them, and fights with them. Those traits are incredibly important. Honestly, I feel like Erwin was not only a great leader, but also the timing of his leadership was perfect. Not only did he, by chance, recruit the greatest soldier humanity has ever seen, but he also ended up with a literal titan under his command and that only further gave him motivation to seek the truth. I´d follow Commander Erwin Smith to the end of the world. Seriously he was on another level, my personal favorite moment is when he is staring at the armored titan and does´t even blink. Great video.
His scene where he is telling people to keep charging while his arm is in a mouth of a Titan and then even after that coming and saving Eren from Armored Titan’s hand was just amazing.

Erwin is hands down one of the most complex characters in the entire series. He's my personal favorite for all of the reasons and most of the scenes in your video. He quite literally brought the hype to the series and some sense of hope that everything would eventually work out up until he died at the end of S3. Good stuff.
Like you said, the scene where he told the survey corps they were going to die showed how much of a leader he was. A lot of them were new recruits and he had to influence them to make that sacrifice alongside himself. I cried watching that scene.
I mean... That's not even completely wrong. They were made to confine the Eldians and let the rest of the world be free, so technically, yeah, the Walls _were_ made to prevent Erwin Smith from conquering the world. :P
He was _such_ an incredible leader that at this point, he's posthumously become something of a Jesus figure. Everyone basically wonders what Erwin would have done in this situation, whether or not he would approve of what's going on now, etc. This isn't even just in-story, the fandom often talks about him the same way. He managed to acquire a reputation for infallibility by his sheer charisma and leadership ability. Whether or not it's right to treat him that way it's a testament to his character. Hell, I was rooting for Armin when the Serumbowl chapters were happening, but it still hurt a _lot_ to watch Erwin pass away, and it's hard to not feel his absence and miss him. Isayama's writing skills are absolutely incredible. It's almost depressing as someone who would like to make stories of his own, I wonder if I could ever even approach that.
Sure you've heard of this before, but everyone was a beginner at the thing they're known for now, struggled, and even had doubts - Isayama as well. You'll get there, keep reading and writing :))
Write anyway! Isayama was a fan of Game of Thrones. We'd never have AOT if he said "wow these books are so amazing, I could never approach anything like this".
Well you should know Isayama changed a lot of stuff in his story from the original concept and storyline. He didn't just write this in one shot, he made many different scenarios and eventually came up with each chapter after many rough drafts.
18:35 "the way he faces death and yells to his team mates to prioritize their common goal after getting mauled by a titan is just full of the exaggerated swagger of a commander of the survey corps, it gives me chills every time I watch it"
I still remember the scene in s3 when they were beginning their operation in shiganshina and armored Titan was planning to take their horses sitting on the wall and beside him was Erwin, totally fearless and giving a look on his face which said " Oh you think you can defeat us? Go ahead, do what you can. I don't give a damn." That was totally badass.
I binged snk in 3 days, so I didn't get the opportunity to understand Erwin's character in depth. Even so, I've never cried so much for someone as much as I did for Erwin when he died. So many people still misunderstand him, it's actually so heartbreaking since he seems like the most realistic character in this show to me. He is hands down the best leader, commander and character that I've come to highly respect and love. In Levi's words - "What a Man!" This video was so well done, thank you for this!!
"Any trainees who join will participate in our excursion beyond the walls, in a month. We expect thirty per cent won't return. In four years, most will be dead. But those who survive will become superior soldiers with a high survival rate. Knowing these discouraging facts, any still willing to risk their lives, remain here. Ask yourself, are you willing to offer your beating heart for humanity?"
Bro that foreshadowing though, in a month thirty percent had been killed by Annie on their expedition and in four years most of the scouts from that time were dead by the attack on Marley
People don’t reference this recruitment speech enough. It was one of the most emotionally charged scenes in AoT. Also the money where he asked “Can you die if you’re ordered to?” And someone screamed “I DON’T WANT TO DIE” even though the person already decided to stick to the survey corps.
@@owolawikehinde5654I fully agree, it is my favorite moment of AoT. Erwin knew that the scouts were the only ones with the ability to save humanity from titan shifters. Erwin told everyone the scouts had a way to discover the truth about titans. He knew that would force titan shifters to join the scouts to stop them from reaching the truth. He also made sure to remind them about Eren, and that he is certainly on the side of humanity. He knew that since the armored titan did not appear after the colossal in Trost, something important (Eren) enough to stop them from busting through the wall must have happened. Knowing that, he brought up Eren to remind them that he has something important that they want. He also deduced the shifters had a high chance of being in the 104th because the day the 104th was in Trost, is the day it got attacked. He brought up how dangerous becoming a scout is in order to scare off as many people as possible, making it easier to figure out who the shifters are.
6:26 Levi: "Are you finally ready to say something? I could've had breakfast during the wait" As if the anime is poking fun at the inner-monologue trope and Erwin's non-reaction to Levi's comment makes this scene even funnier than it probably should be lol.
When the whole video is supposedly about Erwin but you just have to include the whole Levi Vs. Beast Titan fight. Hell yeah! We know one does not simply skip that thing.
The long-range scouting formation served 2 purposes, to see where the titans were coming from and to see who was the titan imposter within the formation. If you look at later down the line, Reina, Mikasa, Armin each had different information on Eren's location. So each squad within the group had different information on where Eren was. So if all of a sudden you tell the squad 1 Eren is to the left, squad 2 Eren is to the right, squad 3 Eren is in the front, and the left one gets attacked, you can deduce who is the imposter within the squad like among us.
My favourite moment of Erwin was when he gave up his dream that he was fighting for, to understand the truth about the Titans and charged one last time for the fate of humanity
Well, there is another side to it as well. His action can be interpreted selfish. Infact, so selfish that to fulfill it he would even throw away his life. In other words, his desire to know the truth, to have it affirmed was even even greater than than him being there to experience it personally. This argument can be expanded to all actions that involve some degree of personal feeling attached to it. Whether that action is ultimately good or bad can be put to discussion afterwards.
I think about that moment quite a bit to be so close to your life's dream, to fulfilling all you had suffered for and just let it go, right there and then, because... you knew that's just how things had played out, and you weren't going to get what you wanted, and then it's just a matter of leaving behind something for everyone else, so maybe the generation below you might have their chance at fulfilling their own dreams and then going into that death with so much honesty and courage, absolutely not hiding from it in any way it's just too fucking much for me bro
i can't help lamenting while watching selfless characters getting hurt and Erwin was a true demostration of self-sacrifice ..the scenes when he lost his arm and when he lost his life were really heart breaking ..accurate analysis and good narration ! great video dude keep making aot content
That scene where Erwing gets bitten by a titan and still keeps on telling the survey cops to keep moving forward towards Eren is also my favorite scene in all of Attack on Titan
Erwine was probably one of the greatest leaders in anime history absolutely ohenomenal he is the kind of commander that any soldier would follow him to his grave
Dude, are you for real??? You barely have 137 subscribers but you make quality videos that are far better of channels that have > millions of subscribers. Good job man, subscribed!!
Another moment for me was when he showed to us how conflicted he was about not living to see the truth and saving humanity vs living and risking humanity's fate. After he accumulated a mountain of corpses to reach this moment, he needs just another another coward's leap to reach the truth. This does not qualify as much for a leadership quality, but as an Erwin Smith moment is top 3 for me.
He finally got over his dream and put his life on the line for and with his comrades. Throughout the arch he battles with the guilt he has for living for his dream when thousands of his comrades were willing to die for each other
@@JellyFam69 He always put his life on the line tho even when he had his dream. He was a regular, fighting soldier and squad leader before becoming a commander. He was usually at the front of the battle. His arm was chewed off, he was almost hanged, etc...
Glad you enjoyed Jason. I also share the same opinion as you to this day. I hope Erwin inspires other similar admirable leaders in anime in the future!
I can understand why most people prefer the chapter "Hero" over "charge", because of Levi murdering the beast titan and also Levi is the most loved character in the series. In my opinion, Erwin is the best character I could ever imagine of and seeing him lead them facing death in that chapter just makes me want to be him, because I can´t think of a better decision making that could made me proud of myself, that Erwin did in that battle is the most heroic thing you can do. Also I want to mention that, when all other soldiers thought that was hell, he didn´t hesitate, gave a inspirational and concise speech, and charge into that
My favorite thing about Erwins character is the freedom he gives to the Scouts. At the end of season 1, he approved Erens fight with Annie within wall Sina, which is a huge gamble politically. In case they would have failed and Annie escaped, Erwin would have been sentenced to death for sure and even Scouts may be disbanded by command of the King for approving such a fight within Wall Sina. But he (and Levi) managed the political influences during the fight by himself and trusted his comrades to fight the titan, and succeeded. That was where I have become his fan.
Dude I just watched that part around 8:15 where Erwin "displayed emotion" and i literally burst out laughing and shedding a tear out of pure emotional overwhelmment - The Story, the music, the acting, the drawing, everything just hits the right spots so perfectly that I, having seen this episode of AoT once two years ago and once again just now in rewatching AoT for its final season, still get completely overwhelmed by the pure power this scene has. God i love good TV
AOT truly is special! I don't think I've ever felt the same rollercoaster of emotions while watching other shows. It will be a sad day when the last episode airs 😤 But will be glad I was part of the experience! Thanks for watching my video too Jakob!
I mean, for real. The moment with the beast titan has you so hooked, and his speech works so damn well, that even you as a watcher have the urge to do the same- to give your heart up for the goal. Damn, this is freaking leadership at its finest
10:45 literally lol'd because I was expecting Levi's voice as he responded to Erwin, but your voice synced perfectly with his mouth movements for a few seconds
Erwin was such an amazing written character, his entire story line. Even in the end, when he admits he was a liar to himself just to fulfill his duty. Favorite character for sure
I love Erwin bc he showed me we might still have a purpose in life. I’m really hopples in this world but when I hear his speech I start to cry every time and feel a little better. Thanks for reading this ❤.
Hey Milan! Thanks for sharing such personal emotions. I think we all feel that way at some point, but trust me, it gets better with time! I hope you get similar inspiration from other things in life and I'm sure you'll figure it out. Have a great day!
Isayama wrote Erwin’s character so beautifully and his impact and role as a leader is needed in aot. He represents the commitment and passion for humanity to progress and his leadership is well demonstrated throughout the series. He has great charisma and encourages others. And he never loses sight of the goals/objectives in a mission. He even lost his arm and still commanded the corps to rescue Eren. Such a beloved and unforgettable character!
It‘s all meaningless. No matter what dreams or hopes you had… No matter how blessed a life you‘ve lived… It‘s all the same if you‘re shattered by rocks. Everyone will day someday. Does that mean life is meaningless? Was there even any meaning in our being born? Would you say that to our fallen comrades? Their lifes… Were they meaningless? No they weren‘t! It‘s us who gives meaning to our comrade‘s lives! The brave fallen! The anguished fallen! The ones who will remember them… are us, the living! We die trusting the living who follow to find meaning in our lives! That is the sole method in which we can rebel against this cruel world! My soldiers, rage! My soldiers, scream! My soldiers, fight!
Erwin is easily my favorite character in this series and, honestly, I don't think I can pick better examples than the ones cited here. You've got his analytical mind on display, you showed his emotional awareness of a situation and how important it is to pump followers up, you got his humility alongside that analytical mind once again, and lastly Erwin's sheer focus of mind and will demonstrating his acceptance that he's but a cog against humanity's survival. Top choice picks.

Dude i feel you!
Write anyway! Isayama was a fan of Game of Thrones. We'd never have AOT if he said "wow these books are so amazing, I could never approach anything like this".
Beautifully said😌👍
Well you should know Isayama changed a lot of stuff in his story from the original concept and storyline. He didn't just write this in one shot, he made many different scenarios and eventually came up with each chapter after many rough drafts.
18:35 "the way he faces death and yells to his team mates to prioritize their common goal after getting mauled by a titan is just full of the exaggerated swagger of a commander of the survey corps, it gives me chills every time I watch it"
Right?! Thanks for watching Lawgx!
😂😂😂 i hope people get this reference
I still remember the scene in s3 when they were beginning their operation in shiganshina and armored Titan was planning to take their horses sitting on the wall and beside him was Erwin, totally fearless and giving a look on his face which said " Oh you think you can defeat us? Go ahead, do what you can. I don't give a damn."
That was totally badass.
Great moment for sure! Thanks for watching Pundarikaksh 🙏
Also when Annie's arm went flying towards him and he didn't move an inch.
@@thelegacyofgaming2928 This is the moment I knew Erwin Smith is meant to greatness.
The fact that he played the whole levi vs beast titan fight shows how epic it was

Moral of the story Erwin is probably one of the greatest leaders in Anime History
Probably greatest leader
You don't need to be powerful when your words can hit more powerful . That was the power of commandant Erwin Smith.
Agreed! Evidenced by the fact that he barely had any fight scenes in the series ⚔️
He truly did not care what happens to himself as long as what he did got humanity some form of hope
🙏
Erwin "the hype machine" Smith.
“The ones who will remember them are us the living” ~ Erwin Smith. That phrase rlly touched me
Great moment! Thanks for watching MLD Lord ✌
Erwin : Give your hearts !
Bro that foreshadowing though, in a month thirty percent had been killed by Annie on their expedition and in four years most of the scouts from that time were dead by the attack on Marley
i felt that
People don’t reference this recruitment speech enough.
It takes a special kind of person to have people die by words alone
This video is brilliant and solidifies the fact that Erwin Smith is my favorite character
Great choice as your favorite and glad you enjoyed it!
6:26 Levi: "Are you finally ready to say something? I could've had breakfast during the wait"
As if the anime is poking fun at the inner-monologue trope and Erwin's non-reaction to Levi's comment makes this scene even funnier than it probably should be lol.
you earn a sub for not cutting the part when levi is killing the beast titan.
Haha glad you enjoyed Supa! ✌
When the whole video is supposedly about Erwin but you just have to include the whole Levi Vs. Beast Titan fight. Hell yeah! We know one does not simply skip that thing.
Great scene definitely! Would be a shame to cut it!
ofc, it took 6 months to complete that scene. so yeah.
U know the story’s good when u don’t know if the side character will be picked over a main character
"Side characters"
" SASAGEYO ! " this man was a boss and clearly one of the most badass characters in all of pop culture . 😎😎😎😎
A badass leader indeed! Thanks for watching Tenro 🙏
Don't say the word
A M O G U S
You know that a character is so well-written when they are being studied for one of their characteristics.
You are damn right!
So glad you included the whole Levi vs beast titan fight
So epic!
Give up on your dreams and die.
.
.
Most motivational line from Levi
I think about that moment quite a bit
to be so close to your life's dream, to fulfilling all you had suffered for
and just let it go, right there and then, because... you knew that's just how things had played out, and you weren't going to get what you wanted, and then it's just a matter of leaving behind something for everyone else, so maybe the generation below you might have their chance at fulfilling their own dreams
and then going into that death with so much honesty and courage, absolutely not hiding from it in any way
it's just too fucking much for me bro
His death still hurts every time I remember it.
A loved character indeed :( Thanks for watching Donnaferl 🙏
i can't help lamenting while watching selfless characters getting hurt and Erwin was a true demostration of self-sacrifice ..the scenes when he lost his arm and when he lost his life were really heart breaking ..accurate analysis and good narration ! great video dude keep making aot content

That scene where Erwing gets bitten by a titan and still keeps on telling the survey cops to keep moving forward towards Eren is also my favorite scene in all of Attack on Titan

Yes! Absolutely killer moment!
His arm was chewed off, he was almost hanged, etc...
one thing i loved about Erwin is no matter how hard the situation is
he never lose his focus and always have a plan to come up
Never in my life i thought i would reach a moment where i would think "I would go to hell for this dude." for a anime character.
That last scene..

I'm so glad to see an entire well thought out video dedicated to Erwin. I've always held that he is one of the greatest fictional leaders of all time.
Also I want to mention that, when all other soldiers thought that was hell, he didn´t hesitate, gave a inspirational and concise speech, and charge into that
I was expecting so many more comments wtf, well either way I absolutely agree with all of this! Eriwn is a great character and I will always love him.

It was under Erwin's command that the scouts finally gained respect in people's eyes

@@AboveWill are you fking pants are dragon????!!!
Not a lot people paid a lot of respect for Erwin Smith like you did. Really eases my grief on him.

erwin was so mysterious in season 1 and easily became my favorite as time went on, the goat of the scouts.
Erwin's leadership brought tears to my eyes, it truly gives me chills how inspiring of a man he could be.
14:40 is my favorite scene in the whole anime so far. When the soldiers continue yelling even after Erwin gets hit, it gives me goosebumps every time.
I mean, for real.
The moment with the beast titan has you so hooked, and his speech works so damn well, that even you as a watcher have the urge to do the same- to give your heart up for the goal.
Damn, this is freaking leadership at its finest
Now this is why Erwin is and will always be the best character
Erwin Smith is my favorite character from this show and this video shows why.
If Erwin got revived instead on Armin, the attack on Marley would have gone so much smoother.
Prolly just about the same
nah
Erwin didn't have Armin's brain and he knew that, he wouldn't have thought of that plan
Nah now we have the true mastermind EREN YEAGER
It went smoothly with Armin. They only lost Sasha because Gabi plot deviced her way onto the airship.
Erwin had me doing the salute half the time he spoke.
10:45 literally lol'd because I was expecting Levi's voice as he responded to Erwin, but your voice synced perfectly with his mouth movements for a few seconds
"What we do in life, echoes in eternity!".....Maximus was actually talking about Erwin Smith.
No moment in Attack on Titan can ever replace the hype of Erwin's speech in the last mission against The Beast Titan
He is THE ultimate hype machine.
I feel like Erwin planted the strategist seed into Armin, that boi got brains tbh. Goated character RIP
Erwin was such an amazing written character, his entire story line. Even in the end, when he admits he was a liar to himself just to fulfill his duty. Favorite character for sure

Such a beloved and unforgettable character!
real world needs a man like Erwin Smith!!
Thanks for the kind words Neuro and really happy you enjoyed the examples!
There's a reason why he is my favourite.
