There are scenarios where you would need to secure a piece of cable to wood. But not many where you'd need to do so in a pinch and MacGyver that 💩 like this.

I can't tell you how many times that I wanted to screw random piece of cable to my deck but something was missing now I know that I can add a nut and a big loop of wire to make it look completely horrible

Yes, a washer will work, thread the cable through the washer the same way as the nut. This is meant to address the "wiggles and breaks" comment.
the problem with the first thing, is that there is a cut in the video, where they change the wiring lol.
Yes a washer would be better. The screw it actually cutting the wire threads while going in, making it weaker.

Good way to tear the cable. Use a slipknot and angle your screw away from the direction that the cable is running or use a 1/4”x1” washer with the slipknot. The screw head and nut will punch through the cable if you go too tight

I have a whole can of random hardware including nuts and wood screws, and about 30 screwdrivers, but not one fence staple or a fence stapler.
