For those of you who are having trouble with this exercise, I think some people are looking to produce images that sit on the inside of your eyelids like a movie screen.. I can do that but can't sustain it just yet.. only flickers that disappear when I try to look at it..
but visualization via imagination is different and easy... it's just like day dreaming.. there is no actual image on your eyeball but you can "see" quite clearly in your mind.. it's like accessing an old memory.. when you think of a moment in time as a child, maybe at a park or at school or whatever, any moment in time you remember clearly.. when you think of that moment and replay the moment, what you're experiencing or "seeing" is your image...
so remember a time in which you ate an apple... do you remember how it looked? how it felt? how it tasted? where were you? what were you wearing? remember eating that apple as if you were eating it now... remember what it looked like as you picked it up, wherever you were... maybe you were at the breakfast table, or on a school bus, or in the grocery store stealing.. remember the moment you held that apple up, just before you took a bite.. remember how the smell rose up to your nose as you opened your mouth to bite it.. slow that moment down and freeze it... just remember it like a screenshot from a movie you took with your cell phone... zoom in on the apple in your memory... you already remember what it looks like.. just remember it's surface, the light bouncing off it's skin, the size and heft of it.. now focus on the apple so that the rest of the memory fades away... no worries about what you were wearing or who was nearby.. all you remember is that apple from that particular day...
do you still remember it? do you REMEMBER what it looked like?? if you do, congratulations.. you just visualized yourself an apple!
the key to visualization is to not worry about what you think you're SUPPOSED to be seeing with your eyes and just IMAGINE using real life experiences, places, objects and people... imagination incorporates any technique the brain can find to communicate with itself.. whether that way is by actual images being seen on the backs of your eyelids, or by a memory or a daydream, it doesn't really matter at all... just let your mind speak to you the way it feels most comfortable.. if all you do is close your eyes and see black but you can remember what an apple looks like, that's your visualization... don't compare your way to the ways of others cuz you'll never be satisfied with the outcome, always doubting it's authenticity.. just accept that your brain will show you what it needs to in the ways that it needs to.. nothing is "wrong" with you, you are perfection! 😍😘💕

A tip I read was to practice with your eyes open, looking outward without moving your eyes and just paying attention to the scene what's on the left of your periphery, the right, but to specifically not focus on anything in particular, just a blank stare. This is beneficial to those who can conjure images ,but those images disappear as instantly as they appeared, a possible explanation is that you literally moved your eyeballs to look at it and focus on it, and there is sufficient enough sensory detail on the inside of your eyelids to pull you out of your imagination and back to the external imagery of the inside of your eye lid. If you instead make sure to not move your eyes and focus on conjured imagery you may be able to sustain that imagery for longer duration.

Thank you SO MUCH! That's exactly how I did it when I was a very young child, I used to visualise and "daydream" a LOT and I remember it so so vividly!
And nowadays I can't do it at all, after I turned like 13 it just "went away."
My aunt told me it was because I was growing up and my third eye was closing.... 😕
(I might add, I'm on the autism spectrum and I was going through trauma and depression at that time and I was developing dissociative disorder, so that COULD be why!)
Thank you SO much for reminding me of this simple but genius technique!!!
Maybe I can get back into it with some practise! 😃👍
      *Thanks for sharing your knowledge!*

So.... This isn't how to visualize if you can't visualize. This is "If you can't visualize things, I'm going to request you to visualize things."
It seems like this is a little like asking someone with no left arm to just go ahead and raise your left hand in the air anyway.

Hmm, I didn't think so, not when he's distinguished between visualizing in the sense of literally seeing the apply in imagination, and seeing it in concepts. When I tried it, I wasn't seeing it in imagination, but easily enough conceived it, and this had the "feel" of seeing in imagination - had I seen it in imagination, I'd have given the same answers, and felt the same; close enough for me. Similarly, when trying to "see" in imagination various "images" for us in the art of memory, I find that there, too, it works just fine to *intend* to see it, even if in imagination I"m drawing a blank. Anyway, that's how it works and seems to me.

Most people can't visualize well because they never actually see objects in exact detail in the first place. So they get a fuzzy object when they look into their memory. Practice by looking at an actual object intently for a couple minutes, noting every detail, then close your eyes and try to recreate it in your mind's eye. Do this multiple times. Practice this every day, and your visualization/memory recall will dramatically improve.

Thank you for this video! I'd like to add...
If everyone could just take a step outside themselves for a moment…When we were children, we had no inhibitions. We just did stuff. Experienced things. Wanted something, so we found a way to get it or do it… As adults we create in our heads all sorts of walls, blocks and things that would prevent us from getting what we want. Stop doing that! Stop being mean and nasty to yourself and go get what you want… Feel good no matter what! You will being is all that matters… You have that you get everything else. Why beat yourself up?! Literally ask yourself why am I beating myself up? There's enough people out there to do that for you knock it off! There's enough people out there trying to prevent you from getting what you want there's enough people out there beating you up there's enough people out there trying to tear you down and take you off your path… Don't allow that! Go get what you want; simply do it without harming anybody or anything in nature. This planet provides everything you came here for and more! Think about it, feel it in your gut try to imagine what it would feel like to have what you want and allow it to come. You need to allow yourself to receive! When you get up in the morning nothing negative has happened yet… Don't allow things to filter in and ruin your day your hour your moment. You're in charge, you're in control and you decide if you feel good or not… Not anybody else. They don't get to do that for you. You're not theirs, you are yours! Don't have the attitude I will never, I can't, I won't, or anything like that. Everything is right there for you. The fact that you say well I can't have that, is the initial problem with you not having… You all know what it would feel like to be $1 million in debt don't you you know what it feels like to be $1000 and that you know what feels like to owe somebody 10 bucks and you don't have it… well if you know what it feels like to be in debt or to want that car that you don't have or that house, flip those thoughts around… Try to see yourself in that house...why not? ..you feel miserable. Why don't you feel good instead?! Teach yourself to feel good all the time-screw it! Look misery in its eyes and smile and say I'm gonna turn you into everything that I want and everything that I came here for. Get up in the morning or the afternoon or the evening and do everything and anything you could possibly do to bring happiness into your life if it's playing cards with yourself play cards with yourself, if it's going for a bike ride or a walk or dropping to the floor and doing some sit ups if you think about it, Do it… Keeping in mind to not harm anything in nature. We don't need to be harmful creatures to get what we want… Train your brain don't allow your brain to train you! We used to be told that as human beings we have the most powerful computer in our heads, the human brain. We need to start using our brains again. We were given the ability to create. We are as human beings wondrous creators...look at what we've done with this planet… It was a ball of trees dirt rocks minerals- we didn't get here as humans and have buildings and roads and cars and schools, And we certainly didn't have theme parks with roller coasters and waterslides… We even created things like birthdays and such for kids to enjoy. We domesticated animals so we could have a friend when we can't find another human being to partner with. We've invented and develop things like the camera and the motion picture camera & the digital camera in your phone ..I didn't grow up with that. Everything we think about all day brings us what that is. You may as well think about everything you crave, desire, need! You came here because you have desires… And it certainly wasn't to be miserable. OK done have a great day thanks for reading… Just before I go, my dad used to tell me I was gonna wish my life away… So I stopped wishing and now I wish I hadn't. Don't stop dreaming don't stop wishing wanting and imagining! Love to all peace to all happiness to all

it was a pink lady apple with a stem with no leaves. It was room temperature, sitting on a blue plate on a purple table with the the light of a cloudy day shining through the window onto it. Thanks for walking us through this. I don't so much see nothing.. I just can't usually make up my mind which image to commit to. I tend to often feel bombarded with possibilities and start feeling anxious.

I have no voluntary sensory recall, the new term for it is Aphantasia. It was affirming that I was able to create an apple in my mind and answer these questions. I do still wish I could experience visualization, but being able to recognize that my imagination is still real is very helpful.

i have aphantasia so, no visual apple for me, but anyway:
the invisible apple is blue. it is shaped like a red delicious apple. it has a stem, and one leaf like the apple logo. it is ice cold to the touch (i mean duh, it's blue) and has a mealy texture (it's a red delicious, after all) I can even taste it. bland. it is floating in space. well, it could be on a table, but alas it is not; it's just floating in an infinite field of black.

He's using conceptual ideas to build on a simple concept. Anything you can describe verbally can be substituted for visualization. He keeps adding more concepts verbally. I have aphantasia so I rely on conceptual and aural thought processes for my imagination. Look up Temple Grandin, an author who has Aspergers, who categorizes thought processes into visual, conceptual, and aural.

  • @doggies400
    @doggies400 5 лет назад +1

It worked for me. I saw an apple floating in space dark red with a stem, no leaves crisp and tart and room temperature, I could smell it too. I think people get confused because they think visualization uses the eyes. It doesn’t. It uses the vision center in the back of the head. If they close their eyes it is dark and they are seeing the back of their eye lids. When we see, the light that enters our eyes and turns into electrical signals that travel down our optic nerve to the vision center of our brain, which is in total darkness, and yet we see. So if people try to visualize using the back of their head it’s sometimes easier and you can learn to do it with your eyes closed or open. It just takes practice

My apple was yellow/green with a red blush to the bottom left hand side, no stem, no leaf, no temperature. When asked to reach out and touch it I just prodded it with my index finger and it was solid. This is where the 'imagining' ran out, it had no temperature, I couldn't take a bite because it wasn't real, I knew it wasn't real, so I assigned the quality of crisp and juicy. It wasn't floating in space, it was front and center at eye level of what would have been my visual field were my eyes open, but it was on a black background.
    As an aside:
I recently paid a lot of money to take a course on hypnotherapy. During that course we did an exercise on the 'Watkins Bridge'. I volunteered to be the subject, despite having made the tutor aware I could not visualise they went ahead and tried to induce hypnosis using visualisation. It didn't work and I didn't enter a hypnotic state. Later on the tutor gave us a technique for pain control that involved visualisation. I had lower back pain at the time so despite my disappointment at not being hypnotized I resolved to just randomly assign the 'answers' to questions that required visualisation. It involved shape, colour, movement and altering the size, shape and colour of this imagined object. I didn't expect this exercise to work, after all I was cheating by just making up my answers on the spur of the moment, almost like a word association response. To my absolute surprise my pain lessons dramatically. (I haven't actually experienced that pain again since).
Sadly I ran out of money half way through the course and could not complete my study. Following my failure in the 'bridge' exercise though I had already more or less decided to end my pursuit of the dream of becoming a hypnotherapist due to the fact I felt like a con asking people to believe I could hypnotize when I had not been hypnotized myself.
One of the most frustrating things for me is this; I believe wholeheartedly in the benefits of hypnotism, yet despite the now common knowledge of the existance of this condition, I cannot find guided hypnotism audio that does not ask the subject, at some point, to visualise.
The only one I have found so far is a clip from Sam Harris on a mindfulness exercise. I've stolen his audio and laid it over an instrumental track. Its not perfect but it kind of works for help getting me to sleep at least.
If anyone out there knows of any guided meditations that don't use visualisation I would be grateful if you could point me in that direction.
Also I'd be interested to know how many people with this condition struggle with mental arithmetic. I have always consoled myself with the thought that I can't do maths in my head because I can't 'see' the numbers. Although I have to say I find it difficult with a pen and paper too :)

I can't visualize but I can imagine. I do believe it depends on how eyes located and on what part of the brain u concentrate. People who can't visually see something do still have dreams and can comprehend world around. Some just stare at the closed eye lids or forehead and concentrate on eyes instead of the empty space in the mind that's why they can't actually see the image. And when we get older it's harder to teach urself or believe urself. I didn't know people can actually see when they say I imagine and thought it's a figure of speech. Now I'm learning. It's not easy.

So I just found out today that I may have aphantasia. When I did this exercise I could not see anything and could only think about these attributes. The question I have is when non-aphantasia people see the apple, are they learning information from the image? Do they determine whether the apple has a stem from the image and not from deciding it has one? I honestly didn't know if the apple had a stem or not and felt like I was just assigning attributes randomly to create the profile of this apple, but I never saw a manifestation of the apple.

    I hear . . .Baby you can drive my car . . . Beatles!
Then I imagined a real green apple, it had no stem, but there were little white spots leading down the little funnel where the stem used to be, and some brown too. I reach out my hand and feel the hardness, I take a bite and my salivary glands start working. It snaps, it is crisp and a little cold :) It's delicious!
    Thanks, that was great.

I imagined baked apple slices with sugar and cinnamon, with taste and smell. I could sense the slices and imagine the cinnamon-sprinkled thick liquid sauce they were in, without “seeing” them clearly. I could NOT imagine an actual apple.
What many of us experience is due to aphantasia, the inability of the brain to create “sighted images” or pictures.
Interesting. Although I am unable to “visualize”, I dream in technicolor. I don’t remember specific “images”, but everything is bright and clear and in color. I believe that my emotions are what are being “dreamed”.
If I need to “visualize”, I can imagine being in a safe place, by a flowing stream in a forested area - and it presents as if I’m actually IN a place of safety, with green grass and trees and bushes. It’s more like a photograph, with me in it, experiencing peace/calm/safety. Still not an actual “picture” - more like feelings that happen to have those colors.
Once I discovered a name for this inability to “visualize”, it made my process clearer to me. My brain works DIFFERENTLY. It isn’t inadequate or lacking. Such a RELIEF!!! I would go away from personal development classes feeling “less than” and unable to “SEE” my future. And yet my life has been interesting and fulfilling.
Thank you for reassuring us about visualizing and for encouraging us to use whatever senses come up for us during the process.
    Blessings!

I first saw 3 apples, green yellow and red. Then I chose to focus my attention on the red apple, with a stem and one green leaf. It was on a white porcelain saucer. My apple had a hard texture. It was room temperature winter cold. It tasted sweet and juicy. Its smell was subtly sweet. I enjoyed your guidance. Thanks.

i think using too much electronic devices might be the reason for this. at least it probably is, in my case. since i was a child i was always on the internet i didnt really go outside didnt really hangout with my friends and ever since i dont really have a life outside of the internet. im starting to realize how my memory loss problems, lack of visualization and depression was/is probably because of this too. i actually had a great imagination when i was a child but looking at the computer screen almost every day for hours probably affected my brain or something like that. how i wanna change this is by not thinking that i have aphantasia or lack of visualization. im simply gonna believe that what i have in my mind when i think of an apple, is normal and enough for me. well ive been also cutting down on my internet usage and trying to focus more on "real life" and realizing my situation as a whole. as we cant really compare how we see things in our minds eye, i think its fair. im also thinking that the way internet works is too fast and overstimulating that it changes brain in a way that the eyes sense an image in a different maybe much faster, so, short memory type of way, which we might think as not being able to visualize but its just a different way of seeing it. maybe a lacking but i dont think i have a mental or neurological whatever problem right now. im trying to learn more about myself and relearn some other things. i think im also gonna sit down and try to imagine some things?? with my eyes open and eyes closed for some time, before bed or i dont know, when im bored. i dont know if anyones gonna see or read this comment but ill leave it here as a report of what i think so far. i might come back idk.

are there even people who can actually see whole colorful lively images in their head?? i mean great for them amazing but i think its a bit of a placebo effect here. if you start thinking that everybody else can visualize almost alive colorful images in their head and that you cant even see anything other than black.....i think thats wrong.. well i wouldnt say imagining my head is just as if i was seeing it in fron of my eyes, but doesnt our brain work based off our memory? i mean like how you cant just visualize a new colour or a new word, if you havent seen it or its not described by things you already know. since birth, brain collects information from the world around and somehow learns some words to make things make sense to other people, its an amazing communication way, absolutely brilliant. but maybe its a bit limiting? not seeing and describing but seeing and feeling things. or the other way around. not describing and seeing in mind but feeling and seeing in mind. isnt that what this video's about too? this man describes the apple, well, makes YOU describe the apple and thats how you can visualize, actually feel the apple right? i keep doubting if im clear and rereading what i wrote but this makes sense in my head. not trying to say "aphantasia is fake" though. it might be real, it might not be. science changes after all. but it might all be "in our head" too. i also just found out that i have a verbal cue. makes sense, when somebody asked me what do you think of when you hear the word "pencil", i would get so confused because the only thing that appears in my mind is the word itself. with the white letters on a black space and all. its not something i would see as a "lack" or "absence". i appreciate that i can do it differently from other people. probably, i mean actually, everybody sees it different too. think about it, everybody has their own reality in their own head. they sense things in a different way than all the other people. but yeah, i dont think its something to be worried or cry over but ill try to change it/shape it into a way i want it to be now that im aware of it. its past 5am already and with thinking about all this stuff that feels unreal, i think i should go to sleep before my body starts changing shapes. i already feel like im floating in the air. i appreciate my life a lot. i love being alive. i might return here with some more information because so far it was only 2 videos about aphantasia i watched and my assumptions and views. and since i do plan on learning more about brain and psychology, i will definitely study and find out more about this. thats it, i really need sleep. have a great day.

My apple was green and sitting in space. I imagined it would taste crisp and had no leaves...room temp and actually had a little bruise on it. It was sitting in space...just darkness surrounding it. Thank you for the exercise. Growing up in Detroit makes it difficult for me to imagine a forest or even a river bank. I joined the Marines at 18 years old and traveled the world but I still can't imagine the outdoors well because I'm not an outdoor person. Wishing I could imagine a better place while my ex husband continues to stalk me, breaking into my home, stealing and destroying my property including security cameras. He's even purchased a WIFI jammer so that I haven't been able to catch him on camera and take it to court in order to prove he's violated the terms of the protection order. I really need to feel better and I awaken each day positive and listening to law of attraction videos but he has something else that he's stolen or destroyed to distract me from the good feeling I work to achieve. If you have any ideas please share them. Thank you in advance for any and all suggestions that may help me to visualize a better place while I'm being stalked and made to feel unsafe.

🎉Thank's. A good exercise to attemp and in my case memory of an Apple tree having just a few leftover apples on some branches is reviving when touring a place. What kind of taste will be of that maroon color type of apple was a curiosity and attempted plucking one and was a wild taste experience quite interesting in comparison to usual apples we having. Thanks. It was off season in winter quite cold as apple's have already been harvested and packaged for dispach in nearby big shedd godown. Thanks again.

The trouble is that he's using the term "imagine", when speaking to people who may well have aphantasia (as I do). The very word "imagine" refers to a visual process (that of producing an image), when people with aphantasia lack the ability to form images in their minds. A better term would be "conceptualize". I can't *imagine* an apple, but I can certainly *conceptualize* it. That may sound like a semantic distinction, but it's also a useful one. I suspect that there are ways for aphants to develop their abilities to conceptualize (distinct from producing images) that might result in better results for some mental processes.

If you can’t visualize via imagination you might be a person who can’t think in pictures. If that’s so you might wanna find another way of visualizing, like by sound, touch, smell or taste
