    Such a clever idea and I really like the way this was filmed - shows very clearly what to do and is easy to understand!

    Thanks for the video. Do you have any video showing how squirrel tries to eat from this feeder?

    • @maryellenslifehacks3042
      @maryellenslifehacks3042  2 года назад +1

      No, I do not because it is impossible for the squirrel to reach the feeder from the ground, it is at second story, and impossible to grab onto slippery fishing line from the roof.

      When I first installed it, my 10 year old son held my legs while I hung out the window. Now he is 23 and he has an extension ladder for his gutter cleaning business. He just hung another one for me at the same spot on the gutter that extends down to the bottom picture window. This one is “squirrel proof” because they can reach it by jumping but cannot get the seeds out because their weight causes it to clamp shut.

    • @maryellenslifehacks3042
      @maryellenslifehacks3042  Год назад

      I suppose that is true. The squirrel could reach it from the ground if it was hung too low and if it was too high it could reach it from the roof. I didn’t think to mention that.

      @@maryellenslifehacks3042: Haha, you must have some pretty slow squirrels in your neighborhood. Most squirrels would unhook that picture hanger in less than a minute. I’ve watched squirrels open the latches on ‘squirrel proof’ galvanized garbage cans, unhook bungee cords, tear any plastic parts on feeders to shreds, eat through plastic garbage cans, cut nylon and rope hanging cords, knock feeders to the ground to break them, you name it. I’ve even watched them tear away aluminum soffit and 1/4” steel flat bar to get into an attic space. They’re probably the cleverest and most resourceful animal I’ve ever had the pleasure to observe…but they do cost me a lot of money in birdseed, lol.

    What stops squirrels from jumping down from the roof?

    • @maryellenslifehacks3042
      @maryellenslifehacks3042  3 года назад +2

      You should keep your trees trimmed so they don’t hang over roof. That way you won’t have squirrels on your roof. If a squirrel did get to my roof, I doubt it could grab onto fishing line. It hasn’t happened yet.

    • @mary-ruthflores4107

      I have tried something similar but the squirrel just pull it up hand over hand. The key is securing the roof which is not possible at my house

      visit a local body of water and cut some fishing line off of a tree or bush on the banks. there'll inevitably be some from fishing people getting their lines tangled and not taking the time to remove it themselves, and you'll be removing a hazard from the environment 👏

      Hello Mark, I keep my 50 lb bag of birdseed in my garage and refill a pourable plastic container which I keep in a closet. The bird feeders need to be soaked in a diluted bleach & water mixture and scrubbed every few months especially if you live in a humid climate. It definitely is a commitment but the reward is a closeup of beautiful birds.

    So the squirrel is supposed have too little to grip onto with the fishing line? I dunno about this project. I'd like to see any failed squirrel attempts to convince me.
    I couldn't see the item called an eye hook. I've worked in hardware stores and been visiting them for decades and I've never seen anything called an eye hook. It's either a closed full circle eye, or an open shape called a hook which allows items to enter one side. It's impossible to be both.

    • @maryellenslifehacks3042
      @maryellenslifehacks3042  3 года назад +1

      Great point! I think I was using a sewing term. It is a closed full circle. I use fishing line because it is durable, aesthetically pleasing and fits into the picture hook nicely. The trick to outwitting the squirrels is where you hang your feeder. If you have no gutters but have a garrison style house, you could actually hang it from the second story window. Mount nail (or magnetic hook attached to storm window frame )between window sill and window. Feeder would dangle above your first story window.
