We used an air duct pipe (cheaper, wider & doesn't rust) and placed a large silver platter from the dollar tree turned upside down over the top. The platter extends past the cylinder, this is for the super energetic jumpers when they pull down or happen to land it gives way and they fall. In the 5 years since my husband MacGyver'd this not one squirrel or raccoon has succeeded. We affectionately call it the Tesla Coil. A real conversation piece as everyone asks us about it. 😂

Thanks for the great project. Do you have any ideas to protect the top of the feeder? The squirrels jump from the roof of the house to the bird feeder.

The best and easiest solution I've found is to hang bird feeder from a common shepherd's hook, coat the pole with Vaseline. Squirrels just slide down. For a few weeks you have to re-coat after a hard rain, but soon squirrels are so discouraged they quit trying, for a while anyway!

No because girls never get into my bird feeders because I keep them on 10-foot Shepherd hooks.
