An era-defining fresco of life among the glitterati in early 1960s Rome.
Casting a typically critical eye over the world of celebrity, Fellini’s epic La Dolce Vita stands as a towering achievement of 1960s cinema. The episodic narrative follows jaded journalist Marcello Rubini (Mastroianni) as he moves across the Eternal City uncovering gossip on movie stars and other VIPs. The film famously spawned the term ‘paparazzo’ which came to describe a certain type of relentless celebrity photographer.

This is the movie that once you saw it, part of your life stuck in it forever
Fellini's sense of cinematic composition is so amazing, you forget this masterpiece is black and white and it would detract from everything if it was in color.
Absolutely the most impressive and gorgeous trailer I've ever seen...and I've seen a lot of trailers. Exquisite. It feels like its almost inside the film bringing out new moments and continuing fellini's work on it 60 years on. My favorite moment in the film has always been inside that supposedly haunted mansion when marcello is led ever so deliberately and without his full understanding into that gorgeous room where he sits alone, almost like a child being punished and the hairs stand up on this arm as anouk begins whispering phantom phrases and spooky sounds in speakers no one was aware was there. Its so seductive, scary, poetic, full of life but the only correct way to categorize it would be as an example of pure cinema. I always wanted to like 8 1/2 more , and I thoroughly cherish his seldom discussed il bidone, not to mention his horrifying segment Toby Dammit from that late 60s omnibus, but la dolce vita towers over it all. It also gets better every time I watch it, becoming a work of effortless grace and exciting discovery.
I love Felllini films and LA DOLCE VITA is my favorite. It covers so much and never wavers a moment in its scope.
This trailer slaps
hahaha it really does.

The sad thing is I am just like Marcello. I know that an ordinary life will probably make me happier but I've convinced myself that the life of debauchery and spontaneity is more fun and meaningful.
I know what you mean. I felt that way for a long time. It was only later in life (mid-50s) that I finally "settled down " and married, living the "ordinary life". I've been blessed, but to be honest, I must admit that there are days when I miss aspects of my old life, the "good times" with "party girls", forgetting those long lonely nights in between.
Honestly this is my favorite film of the 1960's

My Italian language Prof. at College, lived and grew-up in Pre-/Post War Italy...'Was, an extra--'just a face in the Crowd' in the Via Veneto street scene'..and stated with firm conviction...that the Film was an 'un-intended', critique-mirror of how all that is shown--Was. And in a 'Heartbeat, when his life is over' would go-back, to live that Great Grandfather of an Andy Warhol Purple Underground World. It was THAT vibrant and Living-on-the-Edge. Bravo Fellini, Bravo!! And Thank the Gods for this 4k Restoration!
One of the most tragic films ever made with Fellini using his lavish sets and cinematography along with the raw acting, I've heard people say they've wanted to live in this film and then I feel sorry for them.
If I had to convince someone that film is art, I would show him this film.
i have watched this so many times
One of the greatest movies of all time 💃🕺
Really enjoyed the movie, especially the last hour. Kudos to fellini
I'ma bit of a trailer addict and they don't do it better than these sort of restoration trailers to scratcg the itch. BFI are truly a goldmine for these ! Epic trailer, though I like the 8 1/2 one even better ; anyway I should get around to watching this one as soo as I can, looks terrific of course.

"Song towards the end" is pretty vague. Use the counter on the video or something to denote when the song you're talking about starts. Here's a link of songs in film. www.allmusic.com/album/la-dolce-vita-original-soundtrack-mw0000762501

Completely ruined the trailer with changing the music imo. Nino Rota should be respected more.
Not really, the Rota music is endemic to the film. The song works perfectly for this trailer imo
A trailer for La Dolce Vita that includes none of Nino Rota's music. Sorry but, umm... no.
Who is the smoking woman at 1:08?
The Greatest film ever is Ben Hue but i love this!

That was Marcelo's "guide to life": serious, stern, responsible, family man. He was about to quit partying. But if even Steiner cant be happy, he just gives up.

Takeaway… FIN
Can someone tell me what the fuck is La Dolc Vita about? I sat through the whole three hours! 😔 I found nothing but some random women and random party scenes! What the heck is the director trying to communicate here? Though not as torturous as Godard's films, the film is insanely torturous because of its almost 3hr length! some random people catch a sea monster and the film fucking ends! I didn't find any emotional arc or story arc or character arc or any sort of direction towards which the film progresses! Can someone please help me understand what all this is about? I could not relate with this film at all..
It is about the rich people, the aristrocracy and the stars. However it looks like they have a perfect, sweet life (La dolce vita), in reality they are boring, trying to enjoy their life with parties and orgies, which don't help. Marcello is not rich, but tries to live a life like that with some famous people, like the Swedish star, Sylvia, and his lover, Maddalena, while he has a girlfriend.
This isn't Rocky. It's a different kind of character, which requires a different type of movie. Marcello's character, along with his paparazzi, are story makers who KNOW about story arcs (embodied by imperious, dead Rome itself) but are horrified at the perdition they'll discover if they really apply themselves to that discipline. As does the demanding, childish public who funds and consumes their newspapers, they want to avoid facing Character, self-analysis like death itself, moving instead toward dissolution, interchangeability, oblivion. You can get drunk and revel with gorgeous people all night long, but, sure as dawn, the sea monster (or something else) will be there like a bad hangover to remind you of what you've become, as will that angelic girl across the waves remind you of the call of your long-lost promise you can no longer understand. Those arcs you mentioned aren't just for telling stories, they're for living your life. This picture is directly about people who live in the big, weighty shadow of moral arcs while trying to be free of them.
How could somebody like that non-sense movie ? More non-sense, more appreciations otherwise you get harsh critics.
Wo
I tried to watch this movie but too cringe
I have had such mixed feelings about this film for so long. I don't like the ending.
