I don't like the film. 8 1/2 is about the struggles and complexities of the creative process, and the search for meaning in life. The film explores themes such as:The creative process Me: I understand but don't remember any creativity, but it was a Struggle to watch this movie. The technical and personal challenges artists face when expected to deliver something profound while also dealing with their personal relationships and public scrutiny . Me: I see that in the film. Personal confusion The search for meaning, purpose, and understanding, intertwined with memories of the past I guess I see but the film was boring. Modernization The alienating effects of modernization Me: Sure that is so obvious! Actually I have no idea how any scenes would portray that. But was bored and didn't pay as much attention as I could have. Guilt A life marked by untruths, such as when Guido Anselmi (Marcello Mastroianni), a successful Italian filmmaker, compromises his deal with his producers and has an affair with his mistress, Carla (Sandra Milo), while his wife, Luisa (Anouk Aimee), is also present Me: If i don't see guilt through remorse or crying or facial expression .. I have no idea of guilt and remorse, again due to my boredom of all Fellini and this is his best film. But sure when i read it I can figure that was a theme Self-reflexivity ( no idea what this pretentious term means and who cares?). The film deals with its own creation, as Guido conducts screen tests for roles in the film he's a part of, similar to Fellini's own camera placement. Me: In a lesser director's hands, this would be called narcissistic but only the great Fellini can do it well?
@@DanRustle It's a film by Quentin Tarantino from 1994. In the film, Uma Therman's character and John Travolta's character dance almost exactly like the clip at 1:22.
haven't seen it in a long time. i remember it as a beautiful film about all the hub-bub around film making, and a director who is paralyzed by his own freedom.
i used to b a deeper person, seeking those greener pastures far out there, still yet to find, but back then, I used to love film like no other. I was a different person back then, and I can feel what I have lost. Nowadays, there is this underlying sentiment that I was a sold a dream, which turned out to be a lie, a farce, something so highly unforgivable that it has weighed me down. It has been like this for years... I used to watch avant-garde and sentimental movies like 'Wings of Desire' or '8 1/2' with other deep people like myself but now I expect they are just as worn or dead as I am here, today.
'' I wanted to make an honest film, with no lies of any kind.A film that could be useful to every one...That could help us to bury all that's dead inside us , What did i go wrong ?''-Guido Anselmi . In 8 & 1/2 it's as if Federico Fellini (not just the artist in the film) has painted a world of pain. Guido Anselmi (Marcello Mastroianni) after a strange apparition in the opening sequence of this art narrative, he (Guido Anselmi) is at one point seen floating in the sky, and at one point he is brought down to earth by a rope tied to his feet, returning to reality... The fact is the following '8 & 1 /2'' his RUclips link of the film has some voice over stuff (after 5 seconds the voice over in Italian language and as well as English subtitled ) which goes something like "I wanted to make an honest film, with no lies of any kind.A film that could be useful to every one...That could help us to bury all that's dead inside us, What did i go wrong?'' Thanx any ways . Chao .
Italian cinema one of the finest sensibilities in all of early cinema content creations, abstract , absurd with so much conviction that audience attention gets absorbed even in suspension of disbelief, so was french cinema these two Nations dominated in Europeon cinema

As someone who only speaks and understands English fluently, I am appalled how the English dubbed version is not made available. I first came across "8 1/2" at my local video shop around 1996. It was a well worn VHS copy from the 1970's that I managed to rent some 20 times before it was taken off the shelf and shipped to some storage facility on the east coast around 1998. Before that, I was excited to purchase a new Critereon copy fully expecting it to be in English. It was in Italian with English subtitles, I took it back for a refund. Now usually I don't mind films with subtitles but the English dubbed version (supervised by Fellini himself) is vastly superior to the subtitled version. I say this because there are scenes with background conversations that are totally lost and some of the translations are different and not in a good way. I even went to see it on the big screen at a local repetory theater around the same time but no, it was the subtitled version. When Critereon came out with the DVD I immediately bought it, hoping the English dub would be available, but again no. I have done my homework; the film was shot without sound (as was the practice in postwar Italy) and subsequently dubbed in Italian, English, French, and German. I have seen the English version posted on RUclips before only to see it taken down, citing copyright infringement. Is there a conspiricy to keep the English version unavailable? I would fully expect a company like Critereon to at least make it an option for DVD. The funny thing is, if you look for it, there is nobody even talking about the English version. The reason I'm making a big deal about this is because it's my all time favorite movie, but if I had seen the Italian/English subtitled version first, I don't know if that would be the case because there is so much subtlety lost watching it in another language. Thoughts... ?
I see your point of view, but though here in Italy they usually make a good job dubbing foreign films, now that in cinemas we can often see both versions I can tell you that I prefer watching a beautiful film in its original language with subtitles. Many things simply can’t be translated and I’d miss them, such as the actors’ real voices.
Fellini made a movie about a man who is making a movie about a man who is making a movie about a man who is making a movie about a man who is making a movie about a man who is making a movie about a man who is making a movie about a man who is making a movie about a man who is making a movie about a man who is making a movie about a man who is making a movie about a man who is making a movie about a man who is making a movie about a man who is making a movie about a man who is making a movie about a man who is making a movie about a man who is making a movie about a man who is making a movie about a man who is making a movie about a man who is making a movie about a man who is making a movie about a man who is making a movie about a man who is making a movie about a man.
This film redefined self-indulgence and for that reason has proved influential in an era were the promotion of self has become a social norm. It was curious to note the number of "pop" videos influenced by the movie. Other than that the movie contained little value.Europe needs a cinema to investigate its own cultural, moral and demographic disintegration but is unwilling to address those themes. To quote the Scottish philosopher Alisdair MacIntyre: "Europe needs another Benedict". One will emerge but I suspect not in my lifetime.
