Fantastic video Alyn! Yeah... we'll create something cool (surprise surprise). And again, it was a blast to have you in the PhotoPills Camp this year. Keep pushing my friend Loviuuuu!!
I switched several years from PhotoPills to Planitpro And I love the possibility to plan so many different ideas. The possibility to add and see his one POI, bldg’s… on the map is so useful. The 3D viewfinder is the game changer!!! I started to interact with the Planitpro creator and made plenty of 3Ds for the community. I love to see how the app changed over the years 🙏🏻
A very helpful section is Tides! It shows both the high and low tide times vs getting tide charts. So if doing astro Milky Way on a beach looking into the dark sky over the ocean/sea you can start at high tide and then as you go through the night and the tide goes lower you have a clean beach. The bad thing is starting mid high and you get over run by the tide. Or for sunrise at low tide, you can plan your day from a far.
Interesting cool clever app worth looking into. I'm a British Turk was born in Istanbul nice going there on hols but I don't know about living there seems too busy for me mum loves it she moved back in the 80's. As you say too much light pollution but there are some amazing dark skies all over Turkiye. My family originate from a village in Trakya there's some good dark skies there. I quite like the nature photography around İğneada in Trakya seeing as though you got a decent enough wildlife cam. I haven't been for a couple of years was thinking of moving to Canada when I retire for the wildlife there.
I Hear Ya,NWPA Here And The Last Year Has Been Horrible..Cut A Break Last 2 Night,But Hit A Scope Moonrise A Little Bit Ago,I Need To Pull Off The Card
Great video! These apps are absolutely incredible and have totally democratised this kind of photography. I took a photo of the waning gibbous moon rising over the skyline of Oxford in the UK back in 2011 (it was meant to be the rising eclipsed moon but I was clouded out and had to go back the next day!)…and I planned that with some ephemeris tables on a website, and a combination of Google Earth and an OS map! The kids these days don’t know how good they have it… :)
Got my manfrotto tripod from MPB!! £500 new, £90 with delivery! Also went back and brought a camera body, so I can use two "rigs" at once (wide angle and zoom). Camera body was perfect!
I only have photo Pills, I think you actually got me to looking at it. It actually helped me get a moon capture over a Mission in Mescalero, NM. great vid my man!
SWEET! // Possibly to give other 'astrography' enthusiasts another opt is to use 'Stellarium'... I use it kind of next level (and it does have limited location flexibility) - I visit my target location before and do a 360° pano of that exact tripod position - then in post I down-size the equirectangular result and make the sky transparent into a PNG - all in order to create a custom landscape of my location in Stellarium. Of course this makes only sense for often frequented locations, but it provides a plethora of options in any direction and for any time for exactly that location ;-) //
Great video. I usually use both. I prefer the AR mode in Photopills, while I use the VR mode in Planit. In general, Planit gives me more options to "plan" when not on location, while Photopills is better on location in my opinion.
I own Planit pro since years. In between I switched to PhotoPills, because it was hyped everywhere. Both apps are great but I think I give Planit a new go now...! 😉
The best feature not covered in the video is the ability to search for future moon sun alignments! Place your camera, place your target, go to VR mode, draw a box and search for full moon rise/set and get a list of possible alignments.
Awesome,Thank You Alyn,Literally Was Planning A Telescope Moonrise This Morning,lol..I Just Dont Have Anything For A Forground But An Angus Farm,And The Moon Is Never Anywhere Around The Barn.$10 Isnt Bad,Thank You,For Another Great Video,God Bless and Clear Skies🙏🏻❤️🔭✨🌏
I've been a PlanIt evangelist for years. Glad to see you give PlanIt some exposure, Alyn! PhotoPiulls is an excellent app - for what it does. But the 3D virtual reality feature in PlanIt is indispensable for my photography. It's great for MW photographs like when you're in the mountains as well.
One thing for Planit would be very useful to me would be that the plans are on the cloud and whether I use the app on my phone, tablet or Chromebook I have access to those same plans that I created on any other device
Thank you! I thought we might have seen you at the 2023 Sandras Sky Observation Event week before last. Organised by Ethem Hoca ile Gökyüzü Gözlem Etkinlikleri it was 3 nights at Topuklu Plateau south of Denizli. Beautiful dark sky!
I just started using Planit Pro APK running on Windows 11, and it is so much nicer to use during the planning stages. I contacted Photopill and was told the PC version would come sometime in 2024. So unless Photopills can release an APK, I might change to Planit Pro entirely.
Tried it out..finally. Was taking dust in my Phone hihi. Easy indeed is the VR. Thanks to this video picked it up…finally If the building is not present it’s rather easy to create a virtual sort of silhouette. But looking out for the PhotoPils update…very curious Maybe you’re even a Beta tester ? Nice, very nice is that you can see from the VR point if mountains after a building is blocking the sun or moon
This was a great review of the apps. I used Planit Pro for years before getting Photopills. I use them both but like Photopills better since they have better videos on RUclips; Planit Pro is lagging a bit with the videos and I have a hard time reading the help files on the app. Both are useful tools for planning though.
Hi Alyn, awesome video and photos! I am curious about something else though - are you thinking of getting the Sigma 14mm f1.4 beast? I love your work so much that I'm in the process of watching your entire channel chronologically from oldest to newest video, including all WITNS! I am excited about this lens but can't afford it at the moment (in terms of time and budget for this hobby), but I hope this will change in the next couple of years. I would be super interested to see you using it! So I'm hoping that you will buy it! :)
I have both. Since I use Samsung Galaxy series both tablet and phone, I can utilize Dex. Last time, I tried to plan with Photopills, and it failed, possibly that wasn't exactly accurate the DEM model. For next, will use both, or just pay that cup of coffee price for the extended features in PlanitPro. Wow, That premium Photopills demo looked really interesting.
Thanks for this walkthru! Is this moon/sun tracking only available on the Pro version? And a 300mm on MFT is pretty much equivalent to your 600mm Sigma, right?
I use PlanIt Pro on a tablet for the very reason you mentioned - too much going on in the view when using it on my phone. I do find it a fantastic tool to use when planning Milky Way outings. I switch to PhotoPills on my phone when I am in the field, doing final scouting to perfect my composition. Looking forward to the new Premium version when it becomes available. Clear skies!
The one problem I have always had is when shooting say a target on top of a hill. You have the path of the moon and when it rises but no idea when it will rise over a hill etc...does the 'VR' mode cover this, as in it knows where a large hill is?
Alyn, I have a Moon Bazooka question - have you gotten any dust inside the lens barrel? I'm worried about the push-pull zoom design, and that the Contemporary version isn't sealed as well as the Sport version. The closest dark skies to me are in the desert, so dust is a concern. Any thoughts you have would be appreciated, thanks!
stopped watching at 2:19. your book came last week so I may as well read the relevant section. Plus, just spent 15 minutes watching the photopils august supermoon vid. I don't think my brain can master both photopills and this other app
Can it be used to see where the Moon was historically? There's a theory that the helmet of the Solway Firth spaceman from the '60s' was actually the Moon, this app ought to be able to test that.
I'm all for editing to improve highlights and vibrance, but people changing entire photos with over-editing always bums me out. Nature is beautiful enough and sometimes I see some of these places in these unreal photos and the real life expectation can never match that. I get it, photography is art and people want to put their own spin on the photos they capture.
@@AlynWallace I'm referencing the thumbnail you used where the moon went from being white to red and there's lights on in the buildings. People do that kind of stuff all the time with their photos and I get why, it looks amazing. Please don't be offended as I'm not attacking you, just the whole trend of over-editing in general. Cheers dude.
@@frankiehands I agree I prefer a more realistic view that is closer to what a person might see with his own eyes..Too much modification makes it more artistic which is great but it also takes away the realism and makes it harder for me to imagine myself experiencing what's presented in the photo. My favorite photos are the ones that make feel as if im standing right where the camera is, enjoying the view.
Fantastic video Alyn! Yeah... we'll create something cool (surprise surprise). And again, it was a blast to have you in the PhotoPills Camp this year. Keep pushing my friend Loviuuuu!!
Hi, yes we are waiting and very, very curious what will come. Any idea when we will have the surprise😊
Any more updates on the premium app?

I've beeing using Planit Pro for years. Not only game changer for moon but for any landscape photography.

Impressive outcome Alyn. Excited to hear about the Photopills update and really enjoyed finding out about Planit as I've never heard of it until today
Amazing Alyn! I have been using Planit for 5 years now and have been convincing to try it out switch. Beyond powerful.
Been using Planit for years. So happy that Alyn is finally making a video on it. The app will now get the recognition it deserves!

Great video Alyn planit pro is great app and also I love photopills very simple but yet usefull 🙂
Great positioning for the moon photo. Well done. Great video with cursory intro on some of what is possible. Enjoy your location.

Interesting. Can’t wait to see what PhotoPills comes up with.
Thank you Alyn, very informative. I’ve not used PhotoPills much but you’ve opened my eyes to its uses, and now, this Planit app👍😄

Too bad its not available for google play or App Store for IPhone 😢
Another is doing panos you put in lens and it shows the number of shots and degree settings and even for the aspect ratio.
Imma Take A Look At That,Thank You

Rest in peace Alyn..
Alyn do you have a video showing how you photograph these buildings and get the moon exposed together so well? My moon is always blown out. Thanks
If your subject isn't illuminated you need to shoot during twilight
Cannot wait to try it.
Merci beaucoup pour cette vidéo, ses informations d'astronomie, et la découverte de 2 titres de musique très cools.
Glad you love it.

No I'm happy with the Sony 14mm. My bag is heavy enough as it is.
Mighty impressive. How do you support yourself in Turkey? And will this app actually work in remote rural areas where there is no cell reception?
Trebizond might make for some interesting shots, while in the neighborhood..
Trabzon is a 2-hour flight away, not quite in the nieghbourhood. It's also one of my least favourite places in Turkey
Photo pills premium is going to be sickkk
8:14 WOW, you've waited for a plane and got ncc-1701 enterprise instead, nice one :D

Nice video, Alyn. May I ask, why did you make the switch from Canon to Sony?
Great stuff, Alyn. Want to create a moon planning workshop in Istanbul with me?
Great video!

Hi Alan, Great video! Question: how do I see which landmarks are in the PlanIt 3D database?
I Have used the app for 5 years! A chinese engeener.
Clear skies!
dark sky data def. would be useful.
The one problem I have always had is when shooting say a target on top of a hill. You have the path of the moon and when it rises but no idea when it will rise over a hill etc...does the 'VR' mode cover this, as in it knows where a large hill is?
PlanIt downloads a 3d map of where you want to make a plan. It can then render the hill from wherever you tell it you want to stand at.

yes definitely. the author of planit pro has recaptured the Moon and Half Dome. it's so damm accurate!
I just need an app that lists the nights that no moon is in sky at a location.
