Again Thank You Robert for posting this...and to anybody who thinks this video is fake just listen to the commentary it proceeds as normal with the clip. Regards...Chris...East Sussex England..UK
Dam! I had no idea you could do that with a Chinook. I dont know why you would, but the skill of it is mighty impressive. Not that most armies around the world are slouches, I sleep a little better knowing this guy is under our flag. Lets hear it for the machine too. Fine lady she must be to take the hand of such a skilled pilot so well. Hats off to her crew, and a pat pat on her dashboard!
Now that takes guts!! I've seen a Chinook doing "flips" from front to end during a Thunder over Louisville event a few years back and that was the next coolest thing.
One of my instructor pilots in the USAF was a former Army Cobra pilot from Vietnam and he'd tease me about how hard it was to hover a Cobra verses land a jet. When I look at that video I have to admit that's one of the coolest things I've ever seen someone do with an airplane. Sure, the demo teams are all great but when someone surprises you, that's cool too.
Rod. Great to hear from you and I'm glad you have commented on my video. Great to hear from one who has crewed this remarkable aircraft. With your permission I shall amend my description with your statement. Thanks for viewing.
hey i am an air cadet and i have experianced this in the aircraft its self. being in the end seat right at the end of the aircraft. the pilots are very well trained and do there job so very well! well done guys. and oh must say! awesome video dude!
It's really cool watching the helicopter go in reverse while doing a pinnacle landing, but you should try being INSIDE the the helicopter when it's doing it. It's a weird sensation the first couple of times.
Hi Expat. My memories of choppers is over the Malaysian jungle. The Whirwinds of 110, Aussie Hueys and the infamous RAF Beverdere. That always got a cheer when it managed to get airbourne... Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Sure I can. It's just someone awhile ago suggested the same thing and was quite serious about it. I thank you for taking the time to comment and for viewing.
Amazing piece of Flying, it's great seeing these things in action its even better for me as i work on components for them, we do the rotor heads, transmissions, fwd and aft shafts, sync shafts and at my workplace we have the only test cells in europe the only other test cells for transmissions are at boeing, but in my opinion the chinook is an amazing piece of kit!!
Also come to think of it, they do similar for dust landings in the desert. So they're doing this not on a runway, but in the desert in the middle of a huge cloud of sand that the rotors kick up. It's not usually pushed this aggressively as in the video and there's some showing off there, sure, but the maneuver is theoretically practical.
that was superb i was waiting for arnold swarzennegger to jump out with rambo and start knocking the snot outta everyone really skilled pilots though well done
Zgadzam się. Ale z wykwalifikowanych rąk podczas kontroli musi być bezpieczny dla publicznej prezentacji. Wielkie dzięki za podjęte czas wypowiedzenia.
Retired crew member. This isn't a tactical landing. This type of landing would be used if one engine failed or if the helicopter was really heavy. A tactical landing would be getting the thing on the ground as quick as you can. You might have a short roll if you are on grass or smooth ground but the trick is not ripping off the landing gear. The backing up part. That's just the crazy Britt's showing what this airframe can really do. Much respect.
It's just doing a normal landing if one of the engines has failed. It's called a roll on landing and it's a standard emergency procedure. I was a former Flight Engineer on these.
2010 demo shows some of the many differing roles that the aircraft is tasked to perform, both at home and on operations. The team will demonstrate the dropping of an external load from underneath the aircraft, and an internal vehicle carried inside. A large part of the job that Chinook crews undertake in Afghanistan is extracting casualties, and this also forms part of the 9 minute demo. Finally, a fast roping serial will be shown which involves troops abseiling whuile in the hover.
It's a military aircraft demonstrating a military maneuver that is actually used by pilots with effect. What do you think? And yes, it is faster because the lift vector is tilted backwards (the 'wheelie') which allows it to get to the ground rapidly at an angle and then quickly bleed off speed which would not be possible or safe with a more vertical hover landing. Just think of how a plane lands coming in at an angle to the ground, but give it rotors to act as giant air brakes also.
Wicker Jane wing walker.
Hi Ronald. Look again at the video and you may notice a crew member just inside the rear ramp door. He is the eyes for the pilot up front. looks like a frog or fish mouth when this happens. A pinnacle landing is when the aircraft is off loading or picking up on the side of a steep hill. The rear wheels will be on the hillside with the front of the aircraft facing away from the hill. The rear rotor may come very close to the hill and the ramp may be the only part of the aircraft touching ground.
@chinookdisplay This 2006 at the Yorkshire Air Show which was held at Elvington, Yorkshire. I appreciate your comment and can I please ask you to explain this part of the display to those here that still think this a fake video, but it forms part of your basic insertion pinnicle skills? And Also I have to say many thanks for the remarkable skills you and yours are showing during these displays.
Fastest helicopter in the US military. You wouldn't think so, but it is, just slightly.
Thanks for that update Harry. And also thanks for viewing and commenting. To me these comments makes youtubeing all worthwhile.

Damm that pilot is very skilled and a wonderful advert for the training given to allied helicopter pilots

Un-freaking-believable, that has to be the most amazing thing I have ever seen.
Never got tired of watching the Chooks.. and my time in UH-1H, just swung spanners but did get to cx cyclic for calibration for a few hours..
Thanks for your view and comment SD. I never got time on choppers but the chinook has got to be the best.
hey i am an air cadet and i have experianced this in the aircraft its self. being in the end seat right at the end of the aircraft. the pilots are very well trained and do there job so very well! well done guys. and oh must say! awesome video dude!
What a machine. What a pilot. I sleep better at night knowing that both are there for me.
this is the reason i scour youtube for great flying videos. made my week right here in 60 seconds! thanks!

Good grief!!! I thought this was going to be a crash! WOW! Am I impressed with that display of skill!
Oh yeah they do Sir! I was in the US Army 12 years and witnessed plenty of these tactical landings on tarmac AND in the field on firm level ground.
Damn, freaking good flying. That is one hell of a great pilot.
AWESOME PERFORMANCE!!!!! That's CH-47's got a lot more tricks that Eviel Kinevel couldn't perform!!!

Great job pilot.
Unbelieveble. I have watched this with great interest. Building a large RC heli myself, I can't resist searching RUclips for movies about Heli's...
Glad you limeys are on our side! Great vid!
Man reminds me of Kuwait seeing these dudes fast through the runway turning and all on two wheels just to park and takes us to the wonder land.
Beautiful move And awesome recorded from That position

Very nice demonstration of balance. Good video. ))
Such a maneuverable helicopter for its great size! :D Thanks for the video :)

HELICOPTER WHEELIES?! awesome!
not the first time he or she flew that monster. awesome.
that wasn't skill ....... IT WAS PURE AWESOMENESS
now THAT's some mad skill. Probably grew up playing video games. =)
Very impressive!
It reminds me of the Saab Viggen using it's reverse thrusters to stop, turn around, before blasting back off into the sky!
Is it me or Robert Gibson can speak many languages ? Awesome ;)
Now with views at over 5.2 million and it seems it is as popular as ever. It's time for me to say thanks again. 5,230,177 times.
Never saw that trick... Wowzerz! That was cool!!!
Now that's what i call a wheelie with a huge helo.

That is insane!!! Amazing video!

That pilot definitely knows what to do with that A/C. Spectacular work
+HvyMetal4Ever I reckon he has the skill to do just that HM. Thanks for viewing and commenting.
That dude hanging out the side door has a cool job.

I had never seen a helicopter that does a wheelie before, then takes off backwards, now that’s pretty sick.
That is very skillful, Top Pilots.
Tengo que estar de acuerdo, hay mucha habilidad en espectáculo. Gracias por tu comentario.

arrrr, the old fella showing off again!
Crew must be telepathic... that or they have known each other since birth. That takes some damn good communication!
Those choppers amaze me

most friggin awsome wheel-e ever
is a old great design .. it is a great pilot. very accurate the pilot ...
awesome! i'm assuming the jets can be switched from forward to reverse thrust? i see no other way that could be done ..
Parallel parking is much harder! :) And, that "wheelie to a reverse take off" is MUCH harder than it looks.
