      Manufacturer: And how many would you like, sir?

    It offers versatility. As well as Vertical take off and landing capabilities, the tiltrotor design allows for a reasonably fast cruising speed with the increased efficiency fo fixed wing aircraft. I think one of the key mission objectives for the Osprey is covert infiltration, exfiltration and night ops work.

      Blade tip speed is 560 mph. For comparison the Chinook's blade tip speed is 490 mph. Smaller blades require higher operating RPM to compensate. The Marines wanted the craft compact enough to fit on the deck of their assault vessel. They thought about adding more blades but cost and complexity was becoming overwhelming.
      After transitioning to forward flight, rotor RPM is automatically reduced from 412 to 333 for cruise efficiency.

    For the uninformed, the osprey will fly with one engine as essentially a helocopter.

    • @Kneedragon1962

      D. Paul League That is partly correct, it will fly with one engine, and maybe it will land that way. Depending a little on the load and the conditions, (alt, temp, wind etc.) it may be able to get down in one piece. That's assuming the 'engine problem' you have is with one of the turbines, and those are almost supernaturally reliable. But these are connected by a pair of drive shafts and a gearbox. Those are not quite so reliable. And I wouldn't like to try and auto-rotate one. In principle, it can be done, but in practice, there's not enough momentum in those blades to get down safely. And even if you could glide it down like a fixed wing, I wouldn't like to try and land it that way. You could probably get it down in a sort of controlled crash, but that'd be about the best you could do. And, you could build about 5 big helicopters, think Chinooks, or about 10 medium transport fixed wings, think turboprop Caribou's or C130s, for the same money. There is a reason to have these things, and they have a unique skill set, but they're ridiculously expensive. At least their safety record has improved, it wasn't all that good to start with...

    • @TD402dd
      @TD402dd 8 лет назад

      The statement originally was it would drop like a rock without both engines. The military standard is it will fly with one. There are always circumstances, but the design is fly.

    • @Kneedragon1962
      @Kneedragon1962 8 лет назад

      D. Paul Riderman Yes, it does fly. But the basic concept seems to hold some risk. Augusta Westland took this idea and made a 3/4 scale model to use as an executive transport / general purpose faster helicopter. They had a crash of a test prototype recently, killed a couple of staff. Augusta are a whole different company from Europe, and they have some expertise in helicopters, they've made a few, but the concept bit them too, just like Boeing.
