Spears are great, but I think Sergeant and Werefoxes are only fine because the spears have good skills, their own kit is kinda lackluster. I ask myself "why am I using a Sergeant when I can use a Great Knight/Wyvern instead".
TZ is just too easy of a "hardest" difficulty. The game gives you so many tools to break it into pieces. And spears are the strongest and are available to the strongest classes. I feel like you need to do challenge runs to make the game difficult and thus more interesting. Like maybe a spearless run? I personally would love to see a "no uniques" run where you rely ONLY on mercenaries after unlocking the first fort. That would at least lock away the best 5 or so characters and remove many of the best board nukes. And it would force you to rely classes that you otherwise wouldn't use.
Just means Hoplites are going to be your best bet till you hit high enough level for promotes like Breaker, Gryphon Master and Gladiator to get their row smash and almost board nuke (misses flyers) for Gladiator. The game just isn't going to get any harder when every enemy team has no tactics or team comp, even if they get bonus stats. If you want to solve puzzles, do PVP, otherwise no challenge run is really going to be all that challenging once you hit a certain threshold.
@NEKOEVE What? Hoplite is pretty far from being the "next best" class in the early game. Even for tanking alone, you have Fighters and Thieves and Gadiators you can enlist almost from the start.

Lol Another nail in the spear coffin for you, Legionaries of all things are PVP meta now, cause Row cover saves basically 4 people from a screen clear attack. Even with Alicia's wall that's even more attacks that aren't going to touch your squishy back line. I think PVP might be fun to talk about but there's only like 10 viable units at high tier PVP.

Just an fyi, lightning shaker on wyvern rider classes gains a hidden range trait that allows it to hit back line. Really cool huh?
I think most if not all aerial units can target back row with the front still defending, at least Fran and Ochlys can when conditioned to.
